Compressibility Effects On Transient Gas Pipe Flow, Gerald Francis Mouser Jan 1971

Compressibility Effects On Transient Gas Pipe Flow, Gerald Francis Mouser

Masters Theses

"Abstract (1) Methods of iterative solution for the partial-differential equations that govern the transient flow of gases in pipelines are obtained by using the method of characteristics and linear finite-difference techniques. Solutions are developed for 1) a constant gas compressibility factor throughout transient conditions, and 2) a variable gas compressibility factor at constant temperature dependent upon pressures encountered during transient flow. Theoretical studies are made to compare results using both approaches for pipelines operating at various constant flowing temperatures. Results show greater differences between the two methods at lower values of flowing temperature due to the more rapidly changing compressibility …

Fossil Otoliths Of Some Lower Cenozoic Perciform Fishes Of The Gulf Coast, Mostafa Juma Salem

Masters Theses

"Nineteen perciform species from the lower Cenozoic and one Recent species are described, and included under eight genera. The main characters that were considered as generic are the outline of the sagitta and the structure of the sulcus. The other features of the otolith were regarded as secondary in importance. The characters that were believed to be valuable at specific level are almost the same as those for the genus but in more detail. These species are considered to be within the Suborder Percoidei. The fossil species of "Nemipterus" were put in the Family Nemipteridae as they resembled the Recent …

The second group was made up of 7 different mullite compositions spanning the alumina-silica solid solution range from 3Al₂O₃ • 2SiO₂ to 2Al₂O₃ • SiO₂ . Thermal activation energies and stress exponents were calculated for the mullites in the second group. Steady state strain rates taken at 1460ºC under loads of 100 and 110 psi varied between 1.3x10⁻⁴ in/in/hr and 15.4x10⁻⁴ in/in/hr. Activation energies were between 109 Kcal/mole and 204 Kcal/mole. Stress exponents calculated from data …

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja Jan 1971

A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja

Masters Theses

"The volumetric data for methane, nitrogen, and helium mixtures have been determined experimentally at low temperatures (60ºF to -30ºF) over a pressure range of 1000 to 5000 psig. An attempt has been made to show that the extension of standard techniques viz, "The Law of Corresponding States" for predicting the compressibility factors of pure hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures is not adequate for mixtures containing even very small amounts of helium. The deviation from the computed compressibility factors is found to be maximum at low temperatures and high pressures (up to 22%) for the mixtures studied"--Abstract, page ii.

Inclusion Theorems For Boundary Value Problems For Delay Differential Equations, Leon M. Hall Jan 1971

Inclusion Theorems For Boundary Value Problems For Delay Differential Equations, Leon M. Hall

Masters Theses

"In this thesis existence and uniqueness of solutions to certain second and third order boundary value problems for delay differential equations is established. Sequences of upper and lower solutions similar to those used by Kovač and Savčenko are defined by means of an integral operator, and conditions are given under which these sequences converge monotonically from above and below to the unique solution of the problem. Some numerical examples for the second order case are presented. Existence and uniqueness is also proved for the case where the delay is a function of the solution as well as the independent variable"--Abstract, …

The Effect Of Diameter On The Film Boiling Behavior Of Liquid Nitrogen, William Joseph Wafer Jan 1971

The Effect Of Diameter On The Film Boiling Behavior Of Liquid Nitrogen, William Joseph Wafer

Masters Theses

"A film boiling heat transfer study was conducted for liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. The heat transfer surfaces used were cylinders with outside diameters of 0.450, 0.650, 0.850, and 1.000 inches. The temperature differences covered were from approximately 150ºF to approximately 600ºF. The data indicate that the heat flux will decrease to a minimum then increase slightly as the diameter of the heat transfer element is increased at constant temperature difference. The heat transfer coefficient is expected to approach a flat plate correlation as the diameter approaches infinity"--Abstract, page ii.

Development Of A Set Of Optimum Synchronization Codes For A Unique Decoder Mechanization, Irv D. Siegel Jan 1971

Development Of A Set Of Optimum Synchronization Codes For A Unique Decoder Mechanization, Irv D. Siegel

Masters Theses

"Synchronization requirements are specified for and a unique decoder mechanization is associated with a particular communication system. Optimum synchronization codes, defined as codes which are the least susceptible to false synchronization indications, are sought. Existing sets of optimum codes are investigated for applicability. This Thesis shows how these sets were developed from selected criteria and demonstrates why their theoretical nature produces unsatisfactory results in the present application wherein all parameters are known. A computer program was written to examine code pattern performance in the specified decoder under actual operating conditions. From an analysis of the results, a recommended set of …

Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma Jan 1971

Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma

Masters Theses

"In this report bending theory of shells is used to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of circular cylindrical shells. The governing eighth-order system of differential equations has been put in a form which is especially suitable for numerical integration and application of different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. The Holzer method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem. During numerical integration of the differential equations, the exponentially growing solutions are suppressed whenever they become larger than previously selected values. Numerical results are obtained for various shell geometry parameters and for three different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. These …

Thickening And Dewatering Characteristics Of Activated Sludge Containing Metal-Precipitated Phosphorus, Lyle Wayne Merritt Jan 1971

Thickening And Dewatering Characteristics Of Activated Sludge Containing Metal-Precipitated Phosphorus, Lyle Wayne Merritt

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research study was to investigate methods for the disposal of activated sludge containing metal-precipitated phosphorus. To accomplish this objective, chemically-treated activated sludge or a mixture of the secondary sludge with primary sludge were thickened and dewatered by vacuum filtration and centrifugation. The putrescibility of the dewatered secondary sludge was also evaluated, and since anaerobic digestion is the usual method of sludge treatment, a digestion study was conducted. Secondary sludge for these studies was produced in five 38-gpd (144-1/day) activated sludge pilot plants operated at the Rolla Southeast Treatment Plant. Ferric chloride and alum were added directly …

A Triangular Element For Numerical Solutions Of Axisymmetric Conduction Problems In Cylindrical Coordinates, Prafulla Chandra Mahata

Masters Theses

"The triangular element is one of the many suitable elements which are used in finite difference methods as applied to conduction heat transfer. Such elements find many applications in conduction problems in Cartesian coordinates. This work proposes a new triangular element for axisymmetric conduction problems in cylindrical coordinates. The validity and workability of the networks formed by the proposed triangular elements are strengthened by selected examples. The work is completed by the application of the triangular element to an industrial problem having irregular boundaries. The results are compared with the solution obtained by the finite element method"--Abstract, page ii.

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch Jan 1971

The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch

Masters Theses

"Present comprehensive planning endeavors lack a consistent methodology which will produce realistic, useable results. The validity of this statement should be obvious after one has read Miller's "Evaluation of City and Region Planning Techniques." This paper contains a methodology, "The Integrated Planning Method," which will go a long way toward correcting this gross inadequacy that planners presently encounter in directing planning efforts. Two government developed planning and analysis procedures that, up until this time have been applied almost exclusively to hardware systems, have been combined into one integrated planning methodology that will provide not only meaningful and rigorous definition and …

Some Factors Affecting The Results In Cyclic Triaxial Tests, Suresh Kumar Chaudhary Jan 1971

Some Factors Affecting The Results In Cyclic Triaxial Tests, Suresh Kumar Chaudhary

Masters Theses

"A major cause of damage to structures and earth embankments during earthquakes or any other such dynamic vibrating loading conditions has been the liquefaction of saturated sands. There have been several investigations to establish a convenient and relatively simple laboratory test procedure and to study the nature of field conditions leading to sand liquefaction. This investigation evaluates the effects of sample size, testing frequency, and the method of sample preparation on the number of cycles to cause initial liquefaction in pulsating triaxial tests using standardized equipment and test procedures. It has been found that sample size does affect test results …

Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue

Masters Theses

"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. The similarity between the properties and behavior of various hydrosol systems and those ascribed to anomalous water is cited as a serious challenge to the hypothesized existence of an allotropic modification of water"--Abstract, page ii.

Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell Jan 1971

Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell

Masters Theses

"It has become apparent in recent years that the United States Government's construction contract supervision and administration procedures are causing an increase in contractor claims and disputes and that the system itself is becoming prohibitively expensive. To deal with some of these problems, the Department of Defense is attempting to implement a new approach to construction inspection--Contractor Quality control. Under the Contractor Quality Control System the majority of the standard contract inspection and testing responsibilities are placed on the contractor, and the Government relinquishes its traditional step-by-step inspection and testing procedures and withdraws to a position of contract surveillance. The …

Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, Bryce Linn Shriver Jan 1971

Irradiation Enhanced Decomposition Of A Nickel-Carbon Solid Solution, Bryce Linn Shriver

Masters Theses

"This investigation was performed to determine the effects of room temperature neutron irradiation on the distribution of carbon in a nickel--0.3 wt. % carbon alloy. The experiment consisted of comparing the amount of carbon in solid solution and the internal stresses of both unirradiated and irradiated (10¹³ fn-cm⁻² < ΦF < 10¹⁸ fn-cm⁻²) samples following isochronal anneals between 100ºC and 1200ºC by using the magnetic disaccommodation technique. The results indicate that the amount of carbon remaining in solid solution decreases with increasing neutron dose. At temperatures below 200ºC this is due to the trapping of carbon by mobile irradiation-produced defects. Between 200ºC and 600ºC the formation of metastable carbides is enhanced by the presence of irradiation-produced defects. No differences are observed in irradiated and unirradiated samples above 600ºC"--Abstract, page iii.

Normal Mode Method Applied To The Transient Longitudinal Vibrations Of A Finite Rod With Material Damping And Viscoelastic Dispersion, David Arthur Levene Jan 1971

Normal Mode Method Applied To The Transient Longitudinal Vibrations Of A Finite Rod With Material Damping And Viscoelastic Dispersion, David Arthur Levene

Masters Theses

"Longitudinal vibrations of a finite rod with material damping and frequency dependent material properties are examined. The normal mode method is used to investigate the transient response of a rod which is free to move in the longitudinal direction and is subjected to a transient longitudinal loading condition at one end. The equations of motion are derived and solved using both the differential equations approach and the energy methods approach of the normal mode method. The effects of material damping and frequency dependent material properties are considered by formulating the stress-strain relation for the material such that the modulus of …

Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh Jan 1971

Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh

Masters Theses

"Many nonlinear systems display self-sustained oscillations which are often undesirable. The stabilizing effect of a high frequency input signal on an oscillating system with one nonlinearity is determined by the characteristics of the nonlinear element in the system, the linear portion of the system and the amplitude of the signal. This investigation has been concerned with the effect of a triangular wave stabilizing signal on these self oscillations. The equivalent gains for several common nonlinearities are derived. The pseudo describing function introduced by Oldenburger and Boyer for sinusoidal stabilization has been extended to the triangular wave case, and it is …
