Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl
Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this research was to prepare the bisarylsulfonic acid esters of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol.
This series of compounds is of interest because of the antitumor activity exhibited by the bismethanesulfonates of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol. The compounds which were prepared were submitted to Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center for evaluation in their anticancer program.
It was hoped that the compounds synthesized would be of pharmacological value. It was further hoped that the biological test data of these compounds would demonstrate a correlation between types of substituents on the aromatic nucleus and the degree of activity of the compounds. …
Transformations Of Tryptamine And Tryptophan By Basidiomycetes, Hsaio-Lung Cheng
Transformations Of Tryptamine And Tryptophan By Basidiomycetes, Hsaio-Lung Cheng
Masters Theses
"The product formed from tryptamine by Trichloloma nudum was identified as indoleacetic acid (IAA) and from tryptophan by Cantharellus cibrarius as indolelactic acid (ILA). The products were extracted from the spent media with organic solvents. Purification and identification of the crystalline transformation products were accomplished by means of paper chromatography, spectrophotometry and thin layer chromatography.
The conversion of tryptamine and tryptophan was also studied in cultures of Lencopaxillus paradoxus, Pluteus granularis and Pleuatus ostreatus. Only Pluteus granularis was found to transform tryptamine into IAA. Lencopaxillus paradoxus transformed tryptamine into oxindoleacetic acid (OIAA).
Paper chromatography proved to be useful …
The Effect Of Carbonate Karst Terrain On Water Quality, Robert Russell Kilgo
The Effect Of Carbonate Karst Terrain On Water Quality, Robert Russell Kilgo
Masters Theses
"The ever increasing use of water and unabated pollution of streams have made necessary increased research efforts into the quality and quantity of the available national water resources. Karst terrain is prevalent in several sections of the United States, however, little work has been done on the effect of this topography on water quality.
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of carbonate karst terrain on the quality of water. The Meramec spring area, east of Rolla, Missouri, was selected for study. This area was underlain with dolomite formations and contains both karst and non-karst drainage basins …
Taxonomic Study Of Fossil And Recent Otoliths Of Certain Cuskeels, Gary Neal Pointer
Taxonomic Study Of Fossil And Recent Otoliths Of Certain Cuskeels, Gary Neal Pointer
Masters Theses
"Otoliths are calcareous structures occurring in the auditory labyrinths of teleost (bony) fishes. Three pairs of these earstones normally are found: the sagitta, in the sacculus; the asteriscus, in the lagena; and the lapillus in the utriculus. In fishes other than the Order cypriniformes (carp, catfishes, and related forms), the sagitta is the largest otolith, and it may be used in taxonomic and other studies. Fossil earstones of cuskeels (Family Ophidiiae-Brotulidae), constituting the Preophidion complex, occur in relative abundance at various levels in the Claiborne, Jackson, and Vicksburg groups of the Lower Tertiary on the Gulf Coast. The present study …

An Analysis Of The Rapacki Plan To Denuclearize Central Europe, James R. Ozinga
Masters Theses
Introduction
In 1957, Adam Rapacki, Foreign Minister of Poland, proposed that a zone be created in Central Europe in which nuclear weapons of all kinds would be prohibited. The zone was to include the countries of West Germany, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. This paper seeks to study that proposal in the light of its background and consequences. The purpose of such a study, beyond the hopeful accretion of knowledge, is to form conclusions based on the analysis of the proposal as the beginning of a solution to the political and military impasse in Central Europe.
The proposal will be …
Some Effects Of Photoperiodicity On The Temperatures And Weights Of Bobwhites, Bernard J. Cripps
Some Effects Of Photoperiodicity On The Temperatures And Weights Of Bobwhites, Bernard J. Cripps
Masters Theses
Introduction
In recent years there have been a number of studies that have dealt with body temperature and body weight variations in gallinaceous birds under various field or controlled conditions. Wilson (1948) studied the reactions of pullets to different environmental temperatures. In a laboratory experiment Bajpai (1962) observed that a change in the cloacal temperature of adult Rhode Island Red males was effected by manipulating the photo-period. In a report on the sexual maturation of Coturnix quail Wilson et al. (1962) discussed several aspects of variation in body weight, which resulted from changes in photo-period. Hamilton (1957) studied the weights …

Chapter I
Introduction
In the central nervous system of most animals which have been examined some neurons show cytological characteristics of gland cells. These cells are now recognized as a specialized cell type and designated neurosecretory cells.
These neurosecretory cells are capable of elaborating secretory material which is accumulated as granules in the body of the nerve cell and in the axon-endings. They release complex organic substances, neurohormones, which act as hormones and are often liberated into the blood stream (Welsh, 1958). These specialized neurons are capable of receiving impulses from other neurons although their axons do not end in …

Masters Theses
Introduction
The meadow vole Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord) and the prairie vole, Pedomys ochrogaster (Wagner) are two species of grassland-dwelling, slightly fossorial rodents which are very similar in appearance and general body size and proportions. The objective of this study was to prepare a detailed description of the muscles of the pectoral girdle of M. pennsylvanicus and to compare them to P. ochrogaster. It was hoped that the study might indicate similarities and dissimilarities in the ways in which the two species have adapted to their mode of life and show whether or not they share common adaptations of the pectoral …
Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp
Relation Between Use Of Lincomycin And Outgrowth Of Yeast, Howard W. Clapp
Masters Theses
Introduction
The use of antibiotics has increased the average life expectancy of mankind. They have prevented and cured infectious diseases that previously terminated in death. Consequently, recovery is often prompt and complete.
Though a benefit to mankind, the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious disease has also been accompanied by new problems. For example, treatment of a primary infection such as a bacterial pneumonitis with a broad spectrum antibiotic, may result in the death of some of the bacteria. More than one species of bacteria, however, are often found in the infected area. If such be the situation, …
An Investigation Of Employee Attitudes And Employee Performance, Richard V. Washburn
An Investigation Of Employee Attitudes And Employee Performance, Richard V. Washburn
Masters Theses
Industrial managers are showing an increasing interest in employee attitudes, opinions and morale. This conclusion is reflected in the fact that many companies conduct attitude and opinion surveys, train their supervisors in human relations and provide other functions designed to create favorable attitudes.
Management concern for the promotion of favorable employee attitudes may be attributed to two main factors. Part of the concern may be attributed to a general trend toward greater social responsibilities of industry. The other, and perhaps greater part can be attributed to an assumption that employees with favorable attitudes are more productive than those with generally …
And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder
And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder
Masters Theses
First paragraph:
On the second of June in the year 1140, a Council of the Church in Sens formally condemned as heretical nineteen propositions from the works of Peter Abelard, philosopher, theologian, and teacher of unparalleled popularity. Denying emphatically that his teaching varied in any way from that of the Church, Abelard appealed to Rome, only to have Innocent II uphold the decision of the Council. He upheld the condemnation of Abelard’s works, ordered his writings to be burned, forbade him ever again to teach, and, finally, ordered him to perpetual penance. The condemnation of Abelard can be laid to …

The Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase Of Hygrophorus Conicus., Dilip N. Patel
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to determine an assay method for measuring the activity of the indole acetic acid oxidase present in Hygrophorus conicus. This enzyme converts tryptamine or indole acetic acid (IAA) into oxindole acetic acid (OIAA).
An assay method for measuring the activity of the enzyme was developed based on the spectrophotometric measurement of tryptamine, IAA, and OIAA. Several other assay methods were tried. The colorimetric method of Gordon and Weber (l4) was found to be useful for a quantitative determination of IAA and was insensitive to OIAA. Paper chromatography proved to be useful as a qualitative …
