Coarse Woody Debris: Growth & Decay, Cody W. Young
Coarse Woody Debris: Growth & Decay, Cody W. Young
Masters Theses
Coarse Woody Debris is the felled wood from trees. When branches break off and trunks fall down to the ground, the wood from the tree begins to decay. Humans need to acknowledge the importance of this regeneration and habitat building process to help protect it. The debris from coarse wood decay provides multiple benefits to the surrounding ecosystem. It is important to leave the woody debris in the context in which it fell so that the cycles of growth and decay can be preserved. My project is a public service announcement about the values of coarse woody debris. Instead of …
Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu
Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu
Masters Theses
With the rapid development of urbanization in China, people's connection with nature has weakened, leading to an increasingly common phenomenon of nature-deficit disorder. The high-paced, information-saturated lifestyle of cities has further reduced people’s sensitivity to natural rhythms. This is especially true for the younger generation, who are accustomed to fast, dense information flows and find it difficult to slow down and engage meaningfully with nature, even when visiting rural areas.
This study uses the ruins of Puji Temple, located about 50 miles from downtown Beijing, to explore how spatial design can offer urban youth opportunities to reconnect with nature while …
Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang
Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang
Masters Theses
With the rapid growth of the human population, we are encroaching further into wildlife habitats, particularly those surrounding urban environments. This accelerating urbanization leads to biodiversity loss, the degradation of ecological services essential to human health and well-being, and a diminishing connection between city dwellers and the natural world.
Today, urban planners, architects, economists, and other advocates for the future of humanity and the health of the planet are actively questioning how we might build greener, more resilient cities. While much of the focus has been on large-scale interventions — such as the use of sustainable materials, the creation of …

Buddha, Resituated, Min Sun
Masters Theses
The Asian Arts Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art presents significant cultural artifacts in a minimalist, neutral environment that disconnects them from their original historical and spatial contexts. By proposing display techniques that emphasize the origin and background of objects, it asks whether audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds can be enabled to connect empathetically with and learn from the heritage represented by these objects displayed out of context.
This thesis explores how exhibition design can reframe decontextualized artifacts to restore cultural meaning. By unpacking the room chronologically and geographically, and drawing from the spatial language of the Yungang Grottoes, …
Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang
Stranded In Time: Reawakening The Crook Point Bascule Bridge Through Temporality, Zhipeng Wang
Masters Theses
Many urban structures fall into a “stranded” state—physically present, yet socially invisible. The Crook Point Bridge in Providence is a prime example: a decommissioned piece of industrial infrastructure, too large and symbolically heavy to vanish entirely, yet gradually fading from public awareness. This thesis explores how temporary, experience-driven interventions can reawaken the social relevance of such neglected spaces. Rather than proposing a fixed future, the project seeks to prompt public reconsideration through fleeting spatial experiences that require no irreversible transformation. The first intervention utilizes balloons—fragile, inflated, and inevitably collapsing—to embody the theme of accelerated disappearance, echoing how memories fade faster …
Silent Witnesses: Reconnecting Landscape Through Lost Narratives, Abeer Aljohani
Silent Witnesses: Reconnecting Landscape Through Lost Narratives, Abeer Aljohani
Masters Theses
In the heart of the vast Arabian desert, a forgotten tale of tragic love unfolds. Aja and Salma, figures from two different tribes in pre-Islamic Arabia, embody a romance that has long faded into obscurity. The two mountain ranges in Hail, Saudi Arabia, bear their names, standing as silent witnesses to a love story that ends in tragedy—one in which each is killed on separate peaks. Over time, the story has faded, leaving a gap between the landscape and its cultural significance. Could a narrative-based tourism experience revive this link, blending the mountains’ natural beauty with their forgotten story?
This …
Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao
Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao
Masters Theses
What if an exhibition didn’t just present objects but actively pulled visitors into their world? This thesis explores that possibility by reimagining how furniture can be exhibited, using Misha Kahn’s All Tied Up Chair and Michael Thonet’s No. 14 Bentwood Chair as case studies. These two works sit at opposite ends of the design spectrum—Kahn’s chair is an explosion of color, texture, and playful chaos, while Thonet’s is an icon of industrial efficiency and graceful simplicity. Through spatial design, this exhibition translates their contrasting philosophies into immersive environments that extend beyond mere observation. The conventional use of neutral “White Cube” …
Soft Potential, Jennifer Choi
Soft Potential, Jennifer Choi
Masters Theses
“Soft Potential” highlights the potential of furniture and objects to encourage idiosyncratic and open usage through flexible, modular systems. I utilize modularity as a major tool in prompting interaction and transferring agency. Modular systems embody flexibility in form and function and enable people to tailor designs according to their own ideals. This reflects my aim of designing non-prescriptive work, exercising a soft approach to furniture design.
In this work, softness is a rejection of rigidity in support of human tenderness and agency. Softness in furniture can be both literal and metaphorical — embracing the contours of the human body while …
Lingering Loading, Chi Hao Chang
Lingering Loading, Chi Hao Chang
Masters Theses
In a culture that values speed, seamlessness, and instant clarity, Lingering Loading investigates how graphic design can slow down our ways of seeing and knowing. As technology, internet culture, and social media continue to condition us to expect immediate answers, we have become more passive in how we receive meaning. We scroll, absorb, and move on—often without time to ask what we truly think or feel. But in the increasingly rare moments of pause, something undefinable can happen.
To linger is not to delay progress, but to make space for participation—for meaning to emerge from within, not be delivered from …
Welcome To My Mind Palace: The Power Of Fantastical Thinking, Sadie Levine
Welcome To My Mind Palace: The Power Of Fantastical Thinking, Sadie Levine
Masters Theses
What follows is a record of my efforts to make the magic and horrors of my internal world tangible and shareable. The brain constructs hyper-specific fictional realities from childhood to adulthood, yet the scientific study of the mind often forgoes the subjective and the visual. I offer a complementary exploration of the mind - one that is highly visual and based on my own experiences, yet still contextualized in psychological research. Finding the magic in everyday life, and by extension, retreating into alternate realities, is a conscious choice I make, but I have not always had the option to choose. …
Scattering Garden - Designing For Cremated Ash Scattering In Cemetery Landscapes, Sathya G. Munagamage
Scattering Garden - Designing For Cremated Ash Scattering In Cemetery Landscapes, Sathya G. Munagamage
Masters Theses
Cremation is gaining popularity as a preferred after death care procedure. Therefore the need for spaces to bury or scatter cremated ashes is also rising. “Scattering Gardens”, as specific spaces allocated for cremated ash scattering in cemetery landscapes will play a significant role in responding to this shift. The effect of accumulation of these ashes on soil ecology is a rising concern. My thesis investigates the socio-cultural and environmental effects of cremated ashes in the landscapes in which they are placed. Using the North burial ground cemetery as a test site for my investigations, I explore the potential of design …
Material Values Black Locust Exploration, Benjamin N. Riley
Material Values Black Locust Exploration, Benjamin N. Riley
Masters Theses
As individuals many facets of our lives do not offer us significant control over our impact on the environment around us. We are limited by access, time, and information- funneled into making less than sustainable choices. To live sustainably we must have opportunities to strike a balance between what we extract and what we produce. Through our consumption of resources this balance is achieved when we take only what we need and can replace while fostering a cultural appreciation of the extracted materials that we utilize.
Material Values Investigates how we can approach utilizing materials in landscape construction that are …
Ecospiritual Entanglement, Ali Vedad Yüner
Ecospiritual Entanglement, Ali Vedad Yüner
Masters Theses
Land breeds culture. It gives us the resources to thrive, and in that process we establish a relationship with its constituents. With a multitude of beings inhabiting the land, a complex web of relationships develop. Biology describes these relationships as food webs; the mass entanglement of organisms in a manner that each organism nourishes the other. These webs are not just mere scientific structures but rather an interpretation of existential connections that every organism in the world, humans included, are indebted to. Food webs are the first stepping stone in the formation of culture, as they account for the engagement …
Of Dolls And Jewels : Keeping As A Strategy Of Care And Belonging, Yuqi Fan
Of Dolls And Jewels : Keeping As A Strategy Of Care And Belonging, Yuqi Fan
Masters Theses
In this thesis, I will discuss the psychology behind object attachment in the doll-keeping subculture by integrating doll language into contemporary jewelry. I researched the Chinese term “Pi” as an accurate way of explaining how doll-keepers are attached to their dolls. In this 21st century, the widespread use of social media and AI technologies have deepened people's reliance on virtual spaces, leading to emotional detachment in our society. Adopting the concept of “Pi” into contemporary jewelry, which encourages a shift in focus towards external objects, the practice of doll-keeping becomes a form of self-care that compensates for our current loneliness …
Comfort In Contradiction, Yanchen Zhao
Comfort In Contradiction, Yanchen Zhao
Masters Theses
This research explores why modern visual experiences often feel hollow—why suburban McMansions imitate classical architecture and why luxury spaces feel staged. Instead of simply criticizing these aesthetics, I want to understand them: Why do we embrace symbols disconnected from history? What makes them feel familiar and comforting?
Using Jean Baudrillard’s idea of hyperreality and Marshall Berman’s view on modernity, I examine how today’s aesthetics are simulations—designs that no longer refer to a real past but exist as self-repeating symbols. Everyday objects borrow classical decorations without structural purpose, offering a sense of tradition and familiarity without real historical connection. Modernity, while …
Objects Into Things: The Ordinary Into Extraordinary, Michael K. Yirenkyi
Objects Into Things: The Ordinary Into Extraordinary, Michael K. Yirenkyi
Masters Theses
The most intimate experience of architecture starts at the scale of the object, from the slight grazing past the sofa to the painful bump of the toe against the legs of the sharply angled table. These objects have become a huge part of our everyday life and how we navigate the world around us, especially in the home where we spend the most time with them. Yet how many of us are truly aware when we engage with these objects. In a methodology deeply rooted in the design of objects into things, ideas investigated through this process are situated in …
Wooorrmmhooolleess, Kimberly Duck
Wooorrmmhooolleess, Kimberly Duck
Masters Theses
By now we all know that the internet is an integral part of our existence. One could argue that this online existence holds equal importance to our physical one. While the lines blur even further and Mark Zuckerberg can’t wait to cosplay the rich computer guy from Ready Player One, I choose to refrain from the existential dread that seems to be inescapable when thinking of the future nowadays. While we often associate the internet with portals (after all, we once called websites “Internet Portals”—in German at least), Wormholes more accurately capture the experience. Portals promise instant connection. But what …
Instrument, Elliott M. Romano
Instrument, Elliott M. Romano
Masters Theses
I compose graphic design like I would a piece of music. Using input sources such as sound signals and noise algorithms, I create generative systems that alter or adapt typography and graphic form to output audio-textual compositions in real time. I call these systems graphic instruments.
In this book, I present a methodology for constructing and performing visual instruments as hybridized, real-time feedback systems, tracing a lineage of apparatuses as well as works of art and design that share a similar orientation. Through short-form essays and interviews with artists who operate between designer and performer, this thesis explores the …
Afrography: Scripting Futures Anchored In Culture & Community, Osmond Tshuma
Afrography: Scripting Futures Anchored In Culture & Community, Osmond Tshuma
Masters Theses
Latin and Arabic are the most used writing systems in Afrika, not only because of their functionality but because of colonial history. Colonialism established Eurocentrism as the standard, while Afrikan creations were marginalized and demonized. This thesis investigates various ways of reclaiming identity through typography using the concept of Sankofa, which emphasizes retrieving and learning from the past to build the future. By integrating cultural objects into designs and everyday visual language, we can challenge and reverse the demonization imposed on Afrikan symbols by colonial narratives.
The belief of Ubuntu, the philosophy that an individual’s well-being is intrinsically tied to …
Wetland Rehabilitation Through Interspecies Co-Design, Charanya Rajan Ms.
Wetland Rehabilitation Through Interspecies Co-Design, Charanya Rajan Ms.
Masters Theses
This thesis challenges the notion of Human Exceptionalism by examining the agency of the North American Beaver (Castor canadensis) in rehabilitating a 50 acre parcel of land on the Woonasquatucket River watershed, Rhode Island, USA. By reimagining the site without its current commercial and industrial land uses, the project aims to contribute to the nationwide effort of creating and restoring wetlands degraded and damaged over the centuries by human activity. Finally, a pathway running through the site along the river connects to the Woonasquatucket Greenway further down south, with strategically placed look-out points, allowing humans to witness and, therefore, acknowledge …
The House At The End Of Time, Gyles Jose Antonio Ferrao
The House At The End Of Time, Gyles Jose Antonio Ferrao
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates the architectural potential of thresholds as spaces of psychological and metaphysical transformation, positioning the edge not as a boundary but as a generative spatial condition. Drawing upon Carl Jung’s conception of dream architecture as a symbolic map of the self, the project proposes a nonlinear exploration of architecture through layered references that operate across metaphysical scales. The house becomes a medium through which the liminal is made tangible, a temporal and spatial construct that blurs the binary oppositions of life and death, memory and forgetting, reason and absurdity, consciousness and the unconscious.
The project conceptualizes architecture as …
Gradiance: A Mindfulness Intervention, Kip Geddes
Gradiance: A Mindfulness Intervention, Kip Geddes
Masters Theses
People in cities live life at a fast paced forward march that results in a mental state called ‘hurry sickness’. This prevents them from living in the moment, which often leads to a disconnection to those around them. Mindfulness techniques have been proven to increase people’s levels of happiness and openness to the people around them. However, many people are too busy to practice these methods. My thesis looks at ways for mindfulness to intervene into their established routines. Illumination has been shown to promote mental well-being, either in therapy lamps, or circadian rhythm based lighting; the liminal spaces that …
Folding Horizons: Knitted Textiles For A Mobile World, Yutong Li
Folding Horizons: Knitted Textiles For A Mobile World, Yutong Li
Masters Theses
We have grown accustomed to living in flux—moving between cities, countries, languages, and digital spaces. Life no longer unfolds in a straight line, but in fragments and transitions, never quite settling. In this restless rhythm—shaped by fast trains, shifting skies, and the invisible current of the internet—we find ourselves suspended in a vast, woven network. Connection is constant, yet motion is unrelenting.
This project begins with a question: how can textiles reflect this state of in-between? I imagine textiles not as fixed surfaces, but as responsive skins—adaptive, expressive, and attuned to change. Inspired by the tensions of contemporary life—surveillance, shrinking …
Tubo, Shaobo Liu
Tubo, Shaobo Liu
Masters Theses
In this light, while the pursuit of convenience has advanced human civilization in remarkable ways, it is essential to recognize that creativity depends on more than just abstract thought. It relies on the inevitable process of translating ideas into physical form, engaging both mind and body in a cycle of experimentation, failure, and discovery. Without opportunities to physically manipulate and construct, our creative faculties risk stagnation, underscoring the importance of preserving and reintroducing hands-on, experiential learning into modern life.
The modular system in my work prioritizes physical interaction and open-ended outcomes, which responds directly to the challenges posed by digital …

The Blue Below Still Breathes, Yiyi Wang
The Blue Below Still Breathes, Yiyi Wang
Masters Theses
The Blue Below Still Breathes explores disappearance transformation rather than loss—a shift in visibility that reveals the pressures, absences, and structures shaping perception. Across interactive installations and print works, I examine how power operates through omission, fragility, and formal control. At the heart of this practice is printmaking, reimagined as a responsive, impermanent medium that challenges its historical association with fixedness.
The thesis installation features a 5x5 grid of thermochromic screenprints of a concrete wall, where viewer proximity activates a randomized sequence of heating panels. As heat raises the temperature of the surface, a field of blue gradually emerges, breaking …
The Navel Of The Dream, Ella C. Baum
The Navel Of The Dream, Ella C. Baum
Masters Theses
The images in The Navel of the Dream evoke a state of groundlessness. In this body of work, photographs act as thresholds between what is seen and what is felt, between daydreams and nightmares, and memories and myths. The camera is used as a means to engage with feelings of loss, and reenact the mythos of childhood, as well as the deep waters of the subconscious.
Created in Southern Sweden between 2022 and 2025, these photographs investigate the fallow winter landscape, the liminal space of deep, dark Scandinavian nights and the transformative qualities of ice, snow and …
Silent Veins, Yinghan Zhang
Silent Veins, Yinghan Zhang
Masters Theses
My art is founded on the scholar stones in my home in China. These are rocks once collected by ancient scholars and poets, who admired their natural forms for their aesthetic beauty and philosophical qualities. These silent creations of nature are at the heart of my creative inspiration. They serve as spiritual vessels, connecting natural philosophy with personal memory. I listen to the whispers of time within the textures of stone and paper through the contemporary expression of traditional techniques such as rubbing and water-based woodcut, allowing otherwise silent materials to speak a language spanning centuries. In this thesis, Silent …
Field Journal: The Excluded Middle, Carrie E. Kouts
Field Journal: The Excluded Middle, Carrie E. Kouts
Masters Theses
What does it look like to engage with organisms and landscapes at the periphery of anthropocentric value structures? How does one break the internalized myth that the “built” environment is excluded from the natural world? When does a hyper-mobile and hyper-commodified society confront the exponential crisis of animal death? Within this series of journal entries, field notes, collection observations, weird prose, and sensory musings, one will find questions on the nature of being human and the complex narratives of care we encounter in a world shared with more-than-humans. Each handwritten vignette and photograph from daily life weaves a non-linear and …

Site-Specific Nurseries: Reconnecting Nurseries To Time And Place Through Ecotypic Bare-Root Production, Tryn Collins
Masters Theses
We surround ourselves with empty landscapes, landscapes that are stagnant and decorative. Lawns edged with cultivated non-native species are inert spaces, devoid of complexity and serve little function beyond their appearances. These spaces that symbolize wealth through controlling nature are in fact the end of nature. Most of us are completely unaware of the intricate webs of life, the ecologies, that are our real habitat, hidden under the concrete and turf, pushed to the edges of our developments. They are relationships established over thousands of years between plants, insects, animals, weather and soil. This kind of complexity scares us, it …
