Robotic Odor Source Localization Using Vision And Olfaction Sensing, Sunzid Hassan
Robotic Odor Source Localization Using Vision And Olfaction Sensing, Sunzid Hassan
Master's Theses
Robotic Odor Source Localization (ROSL) technology allows autonomous agents like robots to find an odor source in unknown environments. A successful odor source location depends crucially on an effective navigation algorithm that directs the robot towards the odor source. This thesis is a combination of three projects. First, we detail development of a versatile multi-modal robotic platform for ROSL real-world ROSL experimentation and discussed real-world validation of a traditional olfactionbased ROSL algorithm. Secondly, we introduced vision in ROSL by proposing a fusion navigation algorithm that integrates deep-learning enabled vision and olfaction-based navigation. This hybrid approach tackles challenges such as turbulent …
Identifying The Interactors Of Otud6b-2 That Are Important For Its Function On C-Myc, Farah Albatsh
Identifying The Interactors Of Otud6b-2 That Are Important For Its Function On C-Myc, Farah Albatsh
Master's Theses
The complexity of molecular signaling pathways, particularly in cancer research, has made the proto-oncogene c-Myc a key focus due to its role as a master regulator of cellular processes such as growth, division, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of c-Myc is linked to various cancers, making it a highly sought therapeutic target despite challenges in directly inhibiting its function. Recent efforts have shifted towards indirect targeting methods, including BET inhibitors, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, and siRNA formulations. A novel approach using PROTACs and the investigation of c-Myc-specific deubiquitinases (DUBs) has shown potential, particularly the emerging player OTUD6B-2. This study aims to identify and …

Development Of A Urothelial Cell Line Expressing A Caspase-1 Biosensor To Measure Cellular Inflammatory Responses To Potential Uropathogens, Nikita Riya Kesav
Master's Theses
Urinary tract infections are one of the most common bacterial infections, historically implicating Escherichia coli as the causative pathogen. However, it is now known that there are a variety of bacteria that exist within the urinary tract, acting as either beneficial uroprotectives or opportunistic uropathogens. Furthermore, there are significant gaps in our understanding as to how these bacteria interact with the urothelium and what role each plays in maintaining or disrupting homeostasis. Research has shown that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling and Nod-like Receptor Protein 3 play a role in inflammasome activation during infection, triggering caspase-1 activation and inducing release …
Evolutionary Patterns Of Anolis Lizard Skulls: An Investigation In Geometric Morphometrics And An Educational Exploration Of Structure And Function, Katherine Beyer Starr
Evolutionary Patterns Of Anolis Lizard Skulls: An Investigation In Geometric Morphometrics And An Educational Exploration Of Structure And Function, Katherine Beyer Starr
Master's Theses
This study explores the evolutionary patterns of Anolis lizard skulls and integrates findings into a curriculum focused on elucidating the structure and function of a lizard's head. The first objective was to develop an understanding of how the evolutionary patterns, of an extraordinary group of lizards (Anolis) compares to their relatives. Most of the prior research on Anolis morphology has focused on the post-cranium because of its significance towards subdivision of the arboreal habitat. But the group’s remarkable diversity in head shape has been seriously under-investigated. By performing geometric morphometric analysis of skull shape across a large sample of anoles …
Regulation Of Sterile Inflammatory Responses By Mitochondria-Associated Proteins, Meghana Venkatesan
Regulation Of Sterile Inflammatory Responses By Mitochondria-Associated Proteins, Meghana Venkatesan
Master's Theses
Inflammation is an important defense mechanism through which cells respond to pathogenic insults and damage/stress signals. Immune cells mediate extracellular inflammatory responses by synthesizing and releasing small proteins called cytokines, which play critical roles in modulating these responses. Specifically, key pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1beta are released upon the assembly and activation of a multi-protein intracellular complex called the inflammasome, the most well-studied of which is the NLRP3 inflammasome. Several proteins have been identified as important regulators of cellular stress responses, including vacuole membrane protein 1 (VMP1). The present research shows that VMP1-depleted cells exhibit exacerbated cellular inflammation and are …
A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
A Matter Of Life And Death: The Conceptualization And Theological Significance Of Blood In The Pentateuch, Jared Greer
Master's Theses
This 2024 Master of Theological Studies thesis at Lipscomb University analyzes the conceptualization and theological significance of blood within the Pentateuch. While the thesis does attend to various anthropological concerns (i.e., the sociocultural understandings of blood that inform the text), it is more chiefly concerned with how such understandings of blood contribute to the broader theology of the Pentateuch. Using a canonical interpretive approach that respects both the diachronic nature of the text and the theological unity intended by its final redactors, the thesis primarily explores the two principal contexts in which blood appears in the Pentateuch: Israel’s cultus and …
Testing Strategies To Develop A Mucosal T Cell Inducing Vaccine For Hiv-1, Reynolds Boone
Testing Strategies To Develop A Mucosal T Cell Inducing Vaccine For Hiv-1, Reynolds Boone
Master's Theses
Despite numerous efforts, HIV vaccine is still not available. Because HIV Envelop protein varies among subtypes and isolates, it is impossible for one vaccine against HIV Env to induce neutralizing antibodies against all subtypes and isolates. Previous vaccine attempts inducing HIV-specific CD4+ T cells have even been shown to enhance the HIV infection because HIV preferentially infects activated CD4+ T cells. It is known that CD8+ cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) play an important role in controlling HIV infections. We hypothesize that a vaccine inducing only CD8+ CTLs but not CD4+ T cells will be effective in preventing HIV infections. Thus, …
The Effects Of Conditional Loss Of Myosin Binding Protein H-Like On Cardiac Function, Hope Victoria Burnham
The Effects Of Conditional Loss Of Myosin Binding Protein H-Like On Cardiac Function, Hope Victoria Burnham
Master's Theses
Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a common cause of heart failure with a strong hereditary component. Mutations in the myosin-binding protein H-like (MYBPHL) gene are linked to hereditary DCM, atrial fibrillation, and atrioventricular arrhythmias. MyBP-HL is a sarcomeric protein that is highly expressed in the atria with only scarce, distinct clusters of MyBP-HL positive cells in the ventricles, mostly in or surrounding the ventricular conduction system (VCS). Constitutive knock-out of MyBP-HL in mice causes atrial dilation, ventricular dysfunction, arrhythmia, and DCM. Whether MyBP-HL plays a developmental role, or if knock-down in adulthood will recapitulate a similar phenotype has yet to be …

The Anti-Inflammatory Properties Of Exopolysaccharide From Bacillus Subtilis, Nikolay Todorov
Master's Theses
Commensal microorganisms can be used therapeutically to ameliorate a variety of diseases. The laboratory of Dr. Katherine L. Knight studies these therapeutic properties in the commensal microorganism known as Bacillus subtilis. Previously, the Knight lab has demonstrated that B. subtilis can protect against colitis caused by Citrobacter rodentium suggesting that B. subtilis possesses anti-inflammatory properties. These properties are specific to the polysaccharide capsule of the microorganism known as exopolysaccharide or EPS. EPS can be produced and purified for study. EPS has been demonstrated to be protective in a variety of diseases such as allergic eosinophilia, sepsis, Graft versus Host disease, …
Absolute Quantification Of Human Myosin And Titin Isoforms In Disease By A Mass Spectrometry Approach, Nitha Aima Muntu
Absolute Quantification Of Human Myosin And Titin Isoforms In Disease By A Mass Spectrometry Approach, Nitha Aima Muntu
Master's Theses
Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of death worldwide and produces an immense economic burden. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), characterized by contractile weakness and chamber dilation, is a significant cause of HF. The sarcomeric proteins play a crucial role in regulating the contractile properties of the heart. As the primary motor protein, the expression of cardiac myosin isoforms (α-MHC and β-MHC) dictates the performance and cardiac energy utilization of the sarcomere. Titin is the giant spring protein in the sarcomere, and titin isoform expression impacts the passive stiffness of the myocardium. Small changes in the α-MHC/β-MHC and titin isoform ratios …
Characterization Of Cd11c-Expressing Gut-Associated T Cells, Ana Cvetkovic
Characterization Of Cd11c-Expressing Gut-Associated T Cells, Ana Cvetkovic
Master's Theses
Our immune system is a remarkable defense network that protects our bodies from a range of threats. Its’ intricate machinery comprises of messenger and effector cells that work together to coordinate an effective immune response. Traditionally, T lymphocytes have been considered effectors: they receive instructions from messengers, known as Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs), that alter T-cell activation state and behavior. In the gut, Dendritic Cells (DCs) are the APCs that most often instruct T cells. To accomplish their messenger role, DCs express CD11c at high levels, a surface marker involved in cell-to-cell signaling and phagocytosis. As such, CD11c expression has …
Development Of Targeted, Statin Loaded Nanoparticle Delivery Systems, Stephanie Judkins
Development Of Targeted, Statin Loaded Nanoparticle Delivery Systems, Stephanie Judkins
Master's Theses
Statins lower endogenous production of cholesterol through their inhibition of the mevalonate pathway. Lipophilic statins in particular exhibit anti-inflammatory effects at supraphysiological doses by preventing downstream signaling through small molecule GTPases. Interest lies in development of statins as anti-inflammatory therapeutics, however, achieving effective doses locally incurs serious off-target effects. Our goal was to develop and optimize a targeted delivery system to traffic these drugs to inflamed sites and unload the drug at effective concentrations while avoiding systemic exposure. Lipophilic statins (lovastatin, simvastatin, and atorvastatin) were incorporated into polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) due to their hydrophobicity. We have shown that statins released …
Investigating The Oncogenic Role Of Nkx3.1 In Prostate Cancer, Audris Budreika
Investigating The Oncogenic Role Of Nkx3.1 In Prostate Cancer, Audris Budreika
Master's Theses
Prostate cancer is a unique disease in that it is fueled by androgen receptor (AR) signaling. In the clinic, AR signaling is disrupted by removing androgens via chemical castration and employing AR-antagonists such as enzalutamide. Unfortunately, these therapies are short-lived, resistance sets in, and tumors evolve to a form of the disease called castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). At this stage, therapeutic options are virtually exhausted and palliative care is pursued. There is a growing need to characterize other molecular players that cooperate with AR or play a unique role in CRPC on their own. One such potential candidate is the …
Investigating The Roles Of Sirtuins During Cvb3 Infection And Innate Immunity, Bridget M. Hulsebosch
Investigating The Roles Of Sirtuins During Cvb3 Infection And Innate Immunity, Bridget M. Hulsebosch
Master's Theses
Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is an enterovirus that chronically infects heart tissue, leading to dilated cardiomyopathy. However, no vaccines or antivirals exist for CVB3 infection or to treat CVB3-induced dilated cardiomyopathy, except for a heart transplant. Sirtuins (SIRTs), class III lysine deacetylases, have diverse and complex roles in cellular functions, contributing to energy production, NF-κB signaling, cell cycle regulation, and inflammation. Previous studies showed that SIRTs are essential for hepatitis B and A viral replication and regulate the IFN response during viral infection. However, the role of SIRT1 and 2 during CVB3 infection is entirely unknown. CVB3-infected SIRT1 and SIRT2 knockout …
Online Trolling, Harassment, Misinformation: The Psychological Predictors Of Dark Participation, Randy Kim
Online Trolling, Harassment, Misinformation: The Psychological Predictors Of Dark Participation, Randy Kim
Master's Theses
This study aims to examine the reasons why certain individuals engage in “dark participation”, antisocial social participation online involving behavior such as trolling, hate speech, harassment, and spreading disinformation. Online toxicity has increasingly destabilized our ability to engage in socially important discourse online, and trolling has such a strong effect on our environment to the point where the 2016 presidential election was, in part, influenced by online trolls. We theorize that dark participation (DP) will be predicted by high levels of moral disengagement (MD), need for chaos (NFC), and meaninglessness in life (MLN) and self concept clarity (SCC). A series …
Analyzing Live And Dead Fuel Moisture In California: Insights For Wildfire Management Decisions, Jack R. Drucker
Analyzing Live And Dead Fuel Moisture In California: Insights For Wildfire Management Decisions, Jack R. Drucker
Master's Theses
This study investigates trends in fuel moisture content (FMC) across California from 2000 to 2021. It utilizes two distinct sources of FMC data: the Fuel Moisture Repository, which integrates live fuel moisture content (LFMC) observations, and a novel dead fuel moisture content (DFMC) reanalysis product which provides spatial fuel moisture maps by integrating dead fuel moisture observations and a fuel moisture model driven by gridded weather data. The analysis uncovered a general downtrend in FMC across California, with the exception of LFMC in the Northernmost regions and coarse DFMC. Despite the differing long-term FMC trends, all the regions experienced a …

Extraction, Preparation, And Characterization Of Alginate Biopolymer Films From Natural Seaweed, David Ly
Master's Theses
This study evaluates the use of naturally harvested seaweed from the Monterey Bay to produce a biodegradable film for food packaging applications. Two different film-forming methods were evaluated: solution casting and compression molding. The solution casting method using an alginate biopolymer produced the most consistent results. The seaweed biopolymer was extracted from the seaweed biomass using a modified method, resulting in a yield of 11-25 %. The highest yield was observed when using the lowest biomass concentration of 10 wt. %. The extracted alginate was then cast into films at different levels of glycerol plasticization (15-35 wt.%). The addition of …
Synthetic Data Generation For Accurate, Fair, And Private Recommender Systems, Derek B. Lilienthal
Synthetic Data Generation For Accurate, Fair, And Private Recommender Systems, Derek B. Lilienthal
Master's Theses
A notorious challenge for recommender systems on online platforms is to accurately and fairly recommend items that align with users’ preferences while retaining user privacy. These systems often rely on historical data that is partially labeled and includes incomplete user information, leading to the over-representation of majority groups and disproportionately favoring popular items. Substituting user data with synthetic data can address these concerns, but accurately replicating real-world datasets has been a challenging problem. Recent advancements in generative AI have demonstrated the impressive capabilities of diffusion models in generating realistic data across several domains. In this work, we introduce two variations …
Structure Of The South-Central Skagit Gneiss Complex: Implications For Rheological Response To Magmatic Flare-Ups, Jeffery Wegener
Structure Of The South-Central Skagit Gneiss Complex: Implications For Rheological Response To Magmatic Flare-Ups, Jeffery Wegener
Master's Theses
The Skagit Gneiss Complex in the North Cascades magmatic arc consists of Late Cretaceous to Eocene orthogneiss and partially migmatitic paragneiss. Orthogneiss protoliths intruded during two magmatic flare-ups, making the Skagit Gneiss an ideal location to study the relationship between flare-ups and deformation. Geologic mapping, microstructural analysis, and U-Pb dating of zircon were used to construct a timeline of magmatism, metamorphism and deformation in a portion of the Skagit Gneiss. A tonalitic gneiss intruded between ~79-73 at the beginning of the older flare-up and an ~60 Ma, tonalitic to granodioritic, leucocratic orthogneiss intruded at the end of this flare-up. NW-SE …

Single-Caregiver Families: Using Lived Experiences To Build Effective Resilience And Protect Future Children Against Negative Outcomes, Andrew Chakalian
Single-Caregiver Families: Using Lived Experiences To Build Effective Resilience And Protect Future Children Against Negative Outcomes, Andrew Chakalian
Master's Theses
Among many cited risk factors that disproportionately affect children who grow up in a single-caregiver family, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and related behavioral and health outcomes are some of the most significant. Comparatively, there has been a substantial gap in the research exploring protective factors that support healthy development for children with this family composition. The present study used a phenomenological methodology to explore how nine participants aged 18-25 viewed their childhood in a single-caregiver family. Through the use of semi-structured interviews, participants shared their experiences; analysis yielded four themes: (1) further dysfunction in the social system exacerbating the effects …

Observations Of Currents, Waves, And Turbulence Within A Giant Kelp Forest In Stillwater Cove, Carmel, California, Logan A. Grady
Master's Theses
Nutrient distribution and propagule dispersal within Giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests are significantly influenced by turbulence. In-situ measurements of turbulence within giant kelp forests are limited and driving mechanisms are primarily informed by controlled-flume experiments. This study investigates relationships between currents, surface gravity waves, and turbulence within a kelp forest through deployment of moored instrumentation and kelp surveys in Stillwater Cove, California during summer of 2022. Oceanographic conditions were primarily driven by coastal upwelling and a semi-diurnal internal tide, which was associated with cooling events and enhanced onshore velocity within the kelp forest during rising tides. Estimates of gradient Richardson …
Controllable Physics-Informed Latent Space For Acoustic Wave Manipulation, Tristan Shah
Controllable Physics-Informed Latent Space For Acoustic Wave Manipulation, Tristan Shah
Master's Theses
Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) are foundational descriptive tools in scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the exploration of phenomena from material design to climate dynamics and the propagation of pandemics and wildfires. Establishing control of PDEs, especially when the underlying phenomena are only partially observable, holds great potential for fostering technological innovations. This ambition faces considerable obstacles, as a robust sample-based solution remains elusive. Addressing this challenge, this thesis introduces a framework leveraging physics-informed machine learning (ML) to enable control of PDEs. Central to this framework is an agent, equipped with sensors to perceive its environment, that generates a low-dimensional physics-informed …
An Exploration Of Dimensionality Reduction Of Dynamics On Lie Groups Via Structure-Aware Canonical Correlation Analysis, Wooyoung Chung
An Exploration Of Dimensionality Reduction Of Dynamics On Lie Groups Via Structure-Aware Canonical Correlation Analysis, Wooyoung Chung
Master's Theses
Incorporating prior knowledge into a data-driven modeling problem can drastically improve performance, reliability, and generalization outside of the training sample. The stronger the structural properties, the more effective these improvements become. Manifolds are a powerful nonlinear generalization of Euclidean space for modeling finite dimensions. When additionally assuming that the manifold carries (Lie) group structure, this imposes a drastically stricter global constraint. The range of their applications is very wide and includes the important case of robotic tasks. We apply this idea to Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). In traditional CCA one constructs a hierarchical sequence of maximal correlations of up to …
