A Study Of Processing-Structure-Property Correlations In Novel Inorganic Phosphate Glass/Polyamide 66 Hybrid Materials With Enhanced Benefits, Jin Katena
Master's Theses
A new class of inorganic glass/organic polymer hybrid materials has been developed recently by using ultra low Tg tin fluorophosphate glass (Pglass) to combine the advantages of classical polymer blends and composite materials without their disadvantages. One of the important advantages using Pglass is that desirable morphology and properties can be tailored because Pglass becomes liquid under processing conditions of the most plastic materials. Recent study found that polar thermoplastic polymers seem to have a good interaction with the Pglass. In this study, the Pglass was introduced into a commodity thermoplastic polymer matrix, polyamide 66 (PA66), using a conventional …
The Role Of Hardiness In Moderating Parenting Stress In Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans, Victoria Jane Tomassetti-Long
The Role Of Hardiness In Moderating Parenting Stress In Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans, Victoria Jane Tomassetti-Long
Master's Theses
There is a link between parenting stress and negative child outcomes. Research has focused on a number of risk and protective factors that may influence parental practices and child behavior. Parental trauma has been identified as a risk factor for increased parental stress. Previous research has demonstrated a link between combat exposure and parenting stress in veterans of war. Hardiness, a personality variable that describes an individual's sense of commitment, control, and challenge in light of life stress, has been identified as a protective factor that buffers against the development of psychological symptoms in combat veterans. The current study assessed …
Mechanisms Of Non-Enzymatic Peptide Bond Formation: Thioester And Transamidation Routes, Danielle Amie Landry
Mechanisms Of Non-Enzymatic Peptide Bond Formation: Thioester And Transamidation Routes, Danielle Amie Landry
Master's Theses
The reaction mechanisms employed during non-ribosomal peptide (amide) synthesis in the non-ribosomal modular enzyme complex and in the enzyme glutaminyl cyclase were also used for spontaneous peptide (amide) synthesis in a buffered, abiotic solution. Analytical analyses revealed that spontaneous peptide (amide) bond formation occurred under mild prebiotic conditions during both the thioester-based production of phenylalanine peptides and peptidyl thioesters, and the spontaneous cyclization of glutamine t-butyl ester (Gln-tbe) into pyroglutamic acid t-butyl ester. Internal standard-based quantitative MS determined that 4.9 x 10-5 sec-1 was the rate constant for spontaneous Gln-tbe cyclization in imidazole buffer, pH 7, at 50°C, and that …
Stationary Density Computation Of The Frobenius-Perron Operators Based On The Dirac Delta Function, Suanrong Chen
Stationary Density Computation Of The Frobenius-Perron Operators Based On The Dirac Delta Function, Suanrong Chen
Master's Theses
The statistical study of chaotic dynamical systems has received a great deal of attention in the past several decades. As a branch of applied mathematics, its application has been found in various fields in science and engineering, while the theory and methods for the existence and computation of absolutely invariant measures have played an important role in this field. In this study, we focus on the computation of a nontrivial fixed point of Frobenius-Perron operators (F-P operators).
Let S: [0,1] → [0,1] be a piecewise monotonic mapping, and let PS : [0,1] → [0,1] be the Frobenius-Perron operators …
The New Frontier: An Analysis Of Effective New Media Political Communications And Campaigning, Kaitlin Ann Mueller
The New Frontier: An Analysis Of Effective New Media Political Communications And Campaigning, Kaitlin Ann Mueller
Master's Theses
Objectives: In the age of new media communication, politics has taken a swift turn as the Internet lends itself to quicker and less expensive contact. Politicians in all realms have adopted its communicative aspects in many forms as a means of promoting themselves and staying in contact with their constituents. What causes politicians to be more "connected" than others? And secondly, does that "connectivity" lead to successful elections? In this analysis, we will discuss what contributes to a United States Senator's connectivity, and if his or her heightened connectivity led to a higher probability of winning elections. Units of analysis: …
Investigating Mechanisms Of Co-Occurrence Between Two Similar Specis Of Predaceous Diving Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) In Temporary Aquatic Habitats, Kristopher Alexander Pitcher
Investigating Mechanisms Of Co-Occurrence Between Two Similar Specis Of Predaceous Diving Beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) In Temporary Aquatic Habitats, Kristopher Alexander Pitcher
Master's Theses
Predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) are a model group of organisms for testing coexistence and exclusion mechanisms because numerous species of the family interact in isolated, aquatic habitats, and are ubiquitous throughout landscapes. Two morphologically similar species, laccophilus fasciatus rufus and Laccophilus proximus, co-occur in numerous habitats in South Mississippi, but are hypothesized to have strong interspecific interactions. I investigated several possible mechanisms that may promote such coexistence, including segregation in habitat domain, differences in behavior, and differences in dispersal that may allow co-occurrence between these two species of beetle. Habitat domain and behaviors such as activity and prey consumption …
Sex Role Egalitarianism And Relational Aggression In Intimate Partnerships, Emily Elizabeth Prather
Sex Role Egalitarianism And Relational Aggression In Intimate Partnerships, Emily Elizabeth Prather
Master's Theses
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem with vast medical, psychological, financial, and social costs. Research indicates that IPV is particularly common among college students, however, little is known about relational aggression in this population. This study aimed to improve our understanding of relational aggression in the context of romantic relationships in a college sample by focusing on the potential roles of gender, sex role egalitarianism, acceptance of couple violence, and trait anger. As expected, trait anger was positively correlated with relational aggression. Acceptance of couple violence predicted the perpetration of relational aggression above and beyond the effects of …
Applied Bayesian Networks, Steven David Spansel
Applied Bayesian Networks, Steven David Spansel
Master's Theses
A Bayesian Network is a stochastic graphical model that can be used to maintain and propagate conditional probability tables among its nodes. Here, we use a Bayesian Network to model results from a numerical riverine model. We develop an discretization optimization algorithm that improves efficiency and concurrently increases the overall accuracy of the resulting network. We measure accuracy using a new prediction accuracy criteria that includes an a posteriori soft correction. Furthermore, we show that this accuracy quickly asymptotes and begins to show diminishing returns on large data sets.
Discovery And Molecular Characterization Of Selenoprotein M In The Salivary Glands Of Amblyomma Maculatum, The Gulf Coast Tick, Parul Singh
Master's Theses
The Gulfcoast ticks transmit disease-causing pathogens to humans and animals. Rickettsia parkeri is notable among the pathogens transmitted by A. maculatum to humans. Heavy infestations of A. maculatum on animal ears cause them to become thickened and curled, a condition commonly called "gotch ear." The tick's multifunctional salivary glands are vital to their biological success and likely also play a critical role in transmission of disease; tick saliva contains a broad array of secretory products that facilitate prolonged tick attachment and feeding; disrupting tick blood feeding or inactivating key tick salivary proteins presents a novel strategy for tick-borne disease prevention. …
Evaluating Parenting Practices As A Mediating Factor Between Marital Conflict And Children's Adjustment, Kristin Lee Tyson
Evaluating Parenting Practices As A Mediating Factor Between Marital Conflict And Children's Adjustment, Kristin Lee Tyson
Master's Theses
A wealth of research has illustrated that negative parenting practices mediate the relation between destructive marital conflict and externalizing problems in children; however, the study of constructive marital conflict and adjustment problems in children is less developed. Research has also suggested that psychological control is related to children's behavior; however, previous research is unclear as to the specific relationship between marital conflict and children's internalizing and externalizing behavior. To address this gap, the present study examined positive and negative parenting practices and psychological control as mediators of constructive and destructive marital conflict and children's internalizing and externalizing problems. Married mothers …
Metaphasia: Shelley And The Language Of Remoter Worlds, Michael Andrew Howell
Metaphasia: Shelley And The Language Of Remoter Worlds, Michael Andrew Howell
Master's Theses
The aim of this project was to trace the evolution of Percy Shelley's metaphasic narrative, or language of the dead, chronologically through the Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, Mont Blanc, and Prometheus Unbound. Proceeding from Earl Wasserman's detailed map of Shelley's mythopoeic structure, I charted this evolution while identifying a fifth discrete entity within the mythological hierarchy of what Harold Bloom has characterized as a "mythopoeic trilogy" (36). Concurrently, I examined the ongoing debate concerning Shelley's influences, as well as the early formation of his personality, as it pertains to the poems in question, and his fascination with worlds beyond the …
I Don't Know Why You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello: Concepts Of Place In Eudora Welty's The Optimist's Daughter And Elizabeth Bowen's The Death Of The Heart, Emily Frances Cooley
I Don't Know Why You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello: Concepts Of Place In Eudora Welty's The Optimist's Daughter And Elizabeth Bowen's The Death Of The Heart, Emily Frances Cooley
Master's Theses
The Optimist's Daughter and The Death of the Heart reveal that, for Eudora Welty and Elizabeth Bowen, place is· more than mere landscape. Place is both the scene upon which their novels unfold and the means by which they convey their abstract understandings of the world. Place provides the physical settings of their stories, but it also reveals something about their psyche or symbolic language. The settings used by Welty in The Optimist's Daughter reinforce traditional notions of place in Southern life and society whereas the settings employed by Bowen in The Death of the Heart exhibit a partiality for …
Investigation Of A Simulated Annealing Cooling Schedule Used To Optimize The Estimation Of The Fiber Diameter Distribution In A Peripheral Nerve Trunk, Arya Vigeh
Master's Theses
In previous studies it was determined that the fiber diameter distribution in a peripheral nerve could be estimated by a simulation technique known as group delay. These results could be further improved using a combinatorial optimization algorithm called simulated annealing. This paper explores the structure and behavior of simulated annealing for the application of optimizing the group delay estimated fiber diameter distribution. Specifically, a set of parameters known as the cooling schedule is investigated to determine its effectiveness in the optimization process.
Simulated annealing is a technique for finding the global minimum (or maximum) of a cost function which may …

Semiconductor Laser Device-Level Characteristics, Clement K. Law
Master's Theses
High-speed modulations of the semiconductor lasers are highly desirable in cost-effective optical communication systems. Developing the experimental setups to extract the characteristics of the semiconductor lasers is vital to the future of the optical research projects. In this thesis, integrated experimental setup designs have been developed to measure the characteristics of the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), Distributed Feedback (DFB), and Fabry-Pérot (FP) lasers. The measurements of the DC characteristics are optical power versus drive current (L-I) curves (DFB, VCSEL) and optical spectra (FP, DFB, VCSEL). In addition, the high-speed optical detection measurement of the optoelectronic frequency responses for …
A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing
A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing
Master's Theses
In the past, research into Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft has led to the investigation of the coupling of a Circulation Control Wing and Upper Surface Blowing engine. The Circulation Control Wing entrains the flow of the engine to be deflected downward such that a component of the thrust is now in the vertical direction. The unfortunate consequence of the Upper Surface Blowing engine is the poor cruise performance due to scrub drag. Cal Poly's research into a Cruise Efficient Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft offers a solution by pylon mounting over the wing engines. Analysis shows that the engine …

High-Frame-Rate Oil Film Interferometry
Jonathan Charles White
This thesis presents the design and implementation of a high-frame-rate oil film interferometry technique (HOFI) used to directly measure skin friction in time dependent flows. Experiments were performed to determine the ability of a high-speed camera to capture oil film interferometry images. HOFI was found to be able to capture these interferometry images at frequencies up to 105 Hz. Steady laminar and turbulent flows were tested. Transient flows tested consisted of a wind tunnel ramping up in velocity and a laminar boundary layer which was intermittently tripped to turbulence by puffing air …

Blueberry Fruit Development And Splitting, Carrie Lee Witcher
Blueberry Fruit Development And Splitting, Carrie Lee Witcher
Master's Theses
Rain-related splitting of blueberry fruit is a problem facing growers in the southeastern United States and causes an estimated profit loss of up to 20% ($300- $500 per acre). Studies of this phenomenon in other thin-skinned, soft, fleshy fruit showed that no single or set of related physiological or anatomical property explained splitting. Similar research on blueberry fruit was inconclusive, thus a different approach was suggested. l sampled five cultivars at various stages of development distributed across acknowledged split-resistant (SR) and split-susceptible (SS) categories including both rabbiteye and southern highbush types. Several developmental studies were completed at the light microscope …
Effect Of Distress, Referral Source, And Pressure To Attend Therapy On Motivation To Change, Lyn E. Moore
Effect Of Distress, Referral Source, And Pressure To Attend Therapy On Motivation To Change, Lyn E. Moore
Master's Theses
Psychotherapy is an effective form of treatment, yet difficulties with engagement and dropout continue to plague the field. Poor outcomes are more likely to be achieved by poorly motivated clients and those who are mandated to attend therapy (Prochaska, DiClemente, & Norcross, 1992). This study examined links between motivation to change, initial levels of distress, referral source, and pressure to attend therapy in a sample of 587 individuals who attended therapy at a university-based counseling center in the Northeast. Results indicated a relationship between distress and motivation to change as well as a link between the perceived pressure felt by …
Modeling Saltmarsh Sparrow Distribution In Connecticut, Susan T. Meiman
Modeling Saltmarsh Sparrow Distribution In Connecticut, Susan T. Meiman
Master's Theses
To develop a map that would predict where saltmarsh sparrows live and reproduce in Connecticut, I compared models to test a) whether field data or remote-sensing data most effectively characterized within-marsh conditions that relate to sparrow occurrence, and b) whether including landscape-level variables improved model fit. The best sparrow presence model used a variable derived from raw spectral reflectance values associated with plots where sparrows did not occur, while the best nest presence model used a combination of vegetation structure descriptions. A second nest model, built using high resolution remote sensing data that organized marsh characteristics into high and low …

Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Master's Theses
Arginine transport is primarily mediated by the cationic amino acid transporters (CATs) in mammalian cells, but in aves the y+, b0,+ and B0,+ transport systems have also been observed. Arginine is the limiting catabolic substrate required for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a highly reactive compound that acts as a signaling molecule or killing compound. NO is synthesized by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) by macrophages for pathogen clearance. In mammals, CAT-2B is responsible for ARG import in the macrophage for NO synthesis, but the chicken CAT-2B isoform does not transport ARG. Therefore the objective …
Design And Development Of Two Test Fixtures To Test The Longitudinal And Transverse Tensile Properties Of Small Diameter Tubular Polymers, Carolyn Berry
Master's Theses
Hundreds of thousands of vascular bypass grafts are implanted in the United States every year, but there has yet to be an ideal graft material to substitute for one’s own autologous vessel. Many synthetic materials have been shown to be successful vessel replacements; however, none have been proven to exhibit the same mechanical properties as native vessels, one of the most important criteria in selecting a vascular graft material. Part of this issue is due to the fact that, currently, there is no “gold standard” for testing the longitudinal and transverse tensile properties of small diameter tubular materials. While there …
Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres
Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres
Master's Theses
The goal of this work was to compensate for the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field in a vector field magnetic sensor. The magnetic sensor is a part of a low-cost crash avoidance system by Stephane Roussel where the magnetic sensor was used to detect cars passing when it was mounted to a test vehicle. However, the magnetic sensor’s output voltage varied when it changed orientation with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field. This limited the previous work to only analyze detection rates when the test vehicle travelled a single heading. Since one of the goals of this system is …

Design And Analysis Of A Wind Energy Harvesting Circuit Using Piezoelectric Polymers, Jameson J. Thornton
Master's Theses
This thesis investigates a relatively new method for harvesting wind energy by using flexible piezoelectric polymers with additional sails to increase their ability to harvest wind energy. This paper also introduces a new topology deemed the “stacked buck” that allows for multiple inputs to a system with a single output. Derivations and analysis detail the workings of the “stacked buck” with a laboratory test to show a working model. This paper also reports another experiment done in a wind tunnel to analyze the capability of the piezoelectric polymers as sources to the “stacked buck” topology with measurements of the power …
Investigation Of The Behavior Of Free-Standing Gabions In Seismic Regions, Amy Ransom
Investigation Of The Behavior Of Free-Standing Gabions In Seismic Regions, Amy Ransom
Master's Theses
This thesis investigates the behavior of free-standing gabion walls in areas of mild seismicity. To investigate this behavior, three walls of varying internal cable patterns were constructed at a quarter-scale. These walls were tested with a mass shaker, and mode shapes, tone extractions, and damping ratios were calculated. A modal analysis was conducted using design spectra created from a suite of seven earthquakes from countries bordering Kenya. The corresponding lateral forces to these spectral displacements were found, and the restoring eccentricities from the soil restoring force were backed out through a summation of moments. All analysis was experimentally done due …
Angiostatin Like Peptides In Milk: Potential Development For Dairy Products Capable Of Cancer Prevention, Erin Stefanutti
Angiostatin Like Peptides In Milk: Potential Development For Dairy Products Capable Of Cancer Prevention, Erin Stefanutti
Master's Theses
For the past 40 years, antiangiogenic approaches have been of major interest in the development of methods to cure and prevent cancer. Angiogenesis, the development of blood vessels from pre-existing vascularization, is essential for cancer growth and spread of metastasis through the delivery of nutrients and oxygen essential to sustain the metabolic activity of these malignant cells. Blocking access to blood will cause cancerous cells to assume a dormant state creating inactive micro-tumors innocuous to the host. Angiostatin, the internal fragment of the fibrinolytic zymogen plasminogen, has shown great potential in reducing cancer size and number of metastatic colonies in …
