California Polytechnic State University Wind Resource Assessment, Jason Allan Smith Sep 2011

California Polytechnic State University Wind Resource Assessment, Jason Allan Smith

Master's Theses

Wind resource assessment at California Polytechnic State University shows there is potential for wind power generation on Cal Poly land. A computational fluid dynamics model based on wind data collected from a campus maintained meteorological tower on Escuela Ranch approximately 5 miles northwest of campus suggests there are areas of Cal Poly land with an IEC Class III wind resource at a height of 80 meters above ground. In addition during the daytime when the campus uses the most energy there are large portions of land with annual average daytime wind speeds above 6.9m/s. These areas have been identified by …

Small Wind Turbine Blade Sensor For Condition Based Maintenance, Chun Kau Cheung Sep 2011

Small Wind Turbine Blade Sensor For Condition Based Maintenance, Chun Kau Cheung

Master's Theses

Wind Energy is a fast growing industry. However, wind turbines are expensive to build, so they need proper maintenance to prolong service life. Since blades are the most important components in the wind turbine, this project prototyped a low cost sensing system to monitor blades' health. The sensor board uses Atmel microcontrollers to monitor the blade's vibration frequency by sampling a data set of 128 acceleration measurements. An integer version of Fast Fourier Transform is used to process those data. The result is then sent via radio wirelessly to a receiver for future processing. Through calculation with collected data, theoretically, …

Vibration-Based Health Monitoring Of Multiple-Stage Gear Train And Differential Planetary Transmission Involving Teeth Damage And Backlash Nonlinearity, Andrew Patrick Sommer

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to develop vibration-based fault detection strategies for on-line condition monitoring of gear transmission systems. The study divides the thesis into three sections. First of all, the local stresses created by a root fatigue crack on a pinion spur gear are analyzed using a quasi-static finite element model and non-linear contact mechanics simulation. Backlash between gear teeth which is essential to provide better lubrication on tooth surfaces and to eliminate interference is included as a defect and a necessary part of transmission design. The second section is dedicated to fixed axis power trains. Torsional vibration …

Conceptual Requirement Validation For Architecture Design Systems, Gregory M. Flanagan Sep 2011

Conceptual Requirement Validation For Architecture Design Systems, Gregory M. Flanagan

Master's Theses

Computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) programs represent architectural design at a low level of spatial abstraction. While this representation model allows CAAD programs to capture the precise spatial characteristics of a design, it means that CAAD programs lack the underlying computational apparatus necessary to reason about design at a conceptual level.

This thesis is a first step towards building a framework that bridges the gap between the conceptual aspects of a design and its low level CAAD-based spatial representation. Specifically, this thesis presents a new framework, referred to as the Conceptual Requirements Reasoner (CRR), which provides an architect with a framework …

Protective Effects Of Milk Phospholipids Against Uv Photodamage In Human Skin Equivalents, Zyra Achay Sep 2011

Protective Effects Of Milk Phospholipids Against Uv Photodamage In Human Skin Equivalents, Zyra Achay

Master's Theses

The ultraviolet (UV) spectrum has been known to cause damage to skin in varying degrees. UVB radiation (290-320 nm) in particular, has been proven to be highly mutagenic and carcinogenic in many animal experiments compared to either UVA or UVC. The alarming rate of increase in skin cancer incidence has prompted many investigators to pursue other alternatives to sunscreens including changes in lifestyle habits and dietary consumption in order to boost our efforts in tackling this widespread disease. Previous studies employing confocal reflectance, MTT assay and histology suggest that milk phospholipids may possess protective properties against UVB-mediated damage but the …

Gregory Michael Wrobel, M.S.

University of Connecticut, 2011

Modern development of field emitter arrays (FEA) has been made possible, partly thanks to the synthesis and development of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. High aspect ratio 1D nanostructures effectively amplify the electric field at the emitter tips, allowing electrons to be extracted at relatively low electric field. An inexpensive …

Stromatolitic Knobs In Storrs Lake, San Salvador, Bahamas: Insights Into Organomineralization, Alexandre J. Fowler Aug 2011

Stromatolitic Knobs In Storrs Lake, San Salvador, Bahamas: Insights Into Organomineralization, Alexandre J. Fowler

Master's Theses

Storrs Lake, a hypersaline lake on the east coast of San Salvador Island, Bahamas, contains well-developed microbial mats, some of which have developed calcified structures called microbialites. Many of these microbialites are laminated, and therefore classified as stromatolites. This study focuses on small stromatolitic knobs located in the southern portion of Storrs lake, which are still actively forming, to gain insights into the early stages of stromatolite formation. These knobs appear to be forming as the result of in situ micritic precipitation mediated by both photosynthetic and heterotrophic microbial metabolisms. By comparing these small stromatolitic knobs to larger stromatolitic heads …

Automation Of Orthodontic Wire Tester For Performing Three Point Bending Tests, Adithya Venkatesan Aug 2011

Automation Of Orthodontic Wire Tester For Performing Three Point Bending Tests, Adithya Venkatesan

Master's Theses

Abstract

Understanding the biomechanical factors in orthodontics is important in order to improve the overall effectiveness of actual clinical treatment. An accurate method to study the threedimensional (3D) force systems and the resulting movements of teeth during orthodontic treatment is needed along with the understanding of the material properties of any orthodontic wire. Until recently, most of the orthodontic biomechanics literature was limited to twodimensional experimental studies. Recent advances in threedimensional computer modeling have also been developed but have been limited to the manual control of tooth movement. Overall, there is very little published evidence in the literature on the …

Development Of A High Strain-Rate Constitutive Model For Sands And Its Application In Finite Element Analysis Of Tunnels Subjected To Blast, William T. Higgins Iv Aug 2011

Development Of A High Strain-Rate Constitutive Model For Sands And Its Application In Finite Element Analysis Of Tunnels Subjected To Blast, William T. Higgins Iv

Master's Theses

This thesis describes the development of a constitutive model for simulating the high strain-rate behavior of sands and demonstrates the use of the model by analyzing underground tunnels subjected to blast. The constitutive model is based on the concepts of the critical state soil mechanics and bounding surface plasticity theory. The model captures the behavior of sand under multi-axial loading conditions and predicts both drained and undrained behavior at small and large strains. Perzyna’s overstress theory is incorporated in the model to simulate the viscoplastic behavior of sand under high strain rate. The model follows a nonassociated flow rule.

The …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Zno/Cuo Core-Shell Nanowire Arrays, Kuo-Ting Liao Aug 2011

Fabrication And Characterization Of Zno/Cuo Core-Shell Nanowire Arrays, Kuo-Ting Liao

Master's Theses

Research into nanomaterials has become more and more popular because of their unique properties compared to bulk materials. Amongst various functional materials, zinc oxide (ZnO), with a direct electron energy band gap of 3.34 eV at room temperature, is an important optoelectronic material with an intrinsically n-type semiconducting property. However, to form a p-type ZnO semiconductor is still a challenge. Copper oxide (CuO), compared to ZnO, has a much smaller band gap, 1.2 eV, and shows an intrinsically p-type semiconducting property. It has been suggested that when CuO is alloyed with ZnO properly, a p-n semiconductor heterojunction can be formed …

Overweight And Obesity In Health Care Workers In Relation To Musculoskeletal Conditions And Weight Loss, Jessica Lynn Ehrentraut Aug 2011

Overweight And Obesity In Health Care Workers In Relation To Musculoskeletal Conditions And Weight Loss, Jessica Lynn Ehrentraut

Master's Theses

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are the most prevalent occupational injuries in nursing home employees. Most of the research and interventions in the past 30 years have focused on teaching and training nursing home staff proper lifting and body mechanics to reduce the risk of injury. The weight of the nursing home staff and patients have increased dramatically in recent years parallel to the significant growth of adiposity in the general population with two out of three adults overweight, and one of four obese (Body mass index (BMI) > 30). This puts the staff at even higher risk for MSD injuries due to …

Testing For A Descriptive And Injunctive Norm Interaction In Promoting Health Behavior, Robert E. Low Aug 2011

Testing For A Descriptive And Injunctive Norm Interaction In Promoting Health Behavior, Robert E. Low

Master's Theses

Social norms-based interventions have demonstrated efficacy as tools for behavior change interventions. Nonetheless, there is some theoretical and empirical evidence that the efficacy of injunctive norms-based appeals can be undermined by their tendency to 1) arouse psychological reactance among participants, and 2) inadvertently imply that few others are completing the target behavior. The author hypothesizes that supplementing an injunctive appeal with evidence of a supporting descriptive norm will counteract these problematic tendencies. The present research describes a test of of this hypothesis in the context of an intervention to fight H1N1 on campus. Boxes of sanitizing keyboard wipes were placed …

The Structural Response Of A Frame-Membrane Lunar Habitat Subjected To Impact And Thermal Loads, Thomas G. Gionet Aug 2011

The Structural Response Of A Frame-Membrane Lunar Habitat Subjected To Impact And Thermal Loads, Thomas G. Gionet

Master's Theses

Due to their lightweight, ease of construction, and sturdy design, three-dimensional frame-membrane structures have often been used as semi-permanent structures by the military and disaster relief agencies. The membrane provides a fully enclosed space for the people or equipment inhabiting the structure, while the frame adds extra structural support for any harsh loading such as impact, blast, or heavy wind loads. Because of their success on Earth, frame-membrane structures have also been proposed as possible lunar habitat. However, for any proposed lunar habitat, including frame-membrane structures, to be successful, it must be able to withstand the harsh lunar environment including, …

A Field And Modeling Assessment Of Methyl Mercury Accumulation In An Engineered Retention Pond, Lauren C. Blazeck Aug 2011

A Field And Modeling Assessment Of Methyl Mercury Accumulation In An Engineered Retention Pond, Lauren C. Blazeck

Master's Theses

The accumulation of methyl mercury (MeHg) in lakes during summer stratification has been demonstrated to affect biotic mercury (Hg) accumulation. However, small, shallow polymictic lakes can experience short-term stratification and mixing events that are largely unstudied in their abilities to affect Hg cycling and MeHg accumulation. Short-term stratification events and changing lake characteristics impact lake biogeochemical cycles, and therefore, MeHg production and transport. A field and modeling analysis was performed on a small suburban lake located on the University of Connecticut campus to determine the impact of lake characteristics on the potential for MeHg accumulation. MeHg concentrations ranged from non-detect …

L’Evolution De La Position Du Philosophe, Intellectuel Engagé A Travers Les Exemples De Voltaire Et Des Nouveaux Philosophes, Thomas Choukroun Aug 2011

L’Evolution De La Position Du Philosophe, Intellectuel Engagé A Travers Les Exemples De Voltaire Et Des Nouveaux Philosophes, Thomas Choukroun

Master's Theses

Effect Of Prostaglandin E2 On Mechanical Stresses Applied By Mc3t3-E1 Osteoblast-Like Cells On A Soft Hydrogel Substrate, Abhijit Deb Roy Aug 2011

Effect Of Prostaglandin E2 On Mechanical Stresses Applied By Mc3t3-E1 Osteoblast-Like Cells On A Soft Hydrogel Substrate, Abhijit Deb Roy

Master's Theses

Osteoblasts are sensitive to mechanical stimuli and release Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) when exposed to a fluid shear stress. The exact mechanism by which these cells sense mechanical stress is not well established. A study of the stresses applied by the osteoblasts, under the influence of PGE2, on a hydrogel provided information regarding intercellular-communication via changes in the substrate surface pattern.

A digital image correlation program was developed using the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm to analyze images and compare the deformations between pairs of images. Comparisons of images before and after the addition of PE2 to the media showed differences in the …

Dissolved Organic Matter Characterization And Impact On Mercury Binding In An Urbanizing Watershed, Mykel Mendes Aug 2011

Dissolved Organic Matter Characterization And Impact On Mercury Binding In An Urbanizing Watershed, Mykel Mendes

Master's Theses

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, interacting with and controlling the bioavailability and transport of mercury (Hg) and other trace metals through complexation. The complexation of ionic Hg (Hg2+) with DOM can either limit methyl mercury (MeHg) bioavailability or increase MeHg production by stimulating microbial growth. While substantial investigations have examined Hg-DOM interactions in forested ecosystems, little research has been conducted on the Hg-DOM relationship within an urbanized river setting subjected to various anthropogenic sources. The various runoff and pollutant sources vary in DOM quality and character. Three sources of organic matter from the North …

Intact Statistical Word Learning In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jessica Mayo Aug 2011

Intact Statistical Word Learning In Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jessica Mayo

Master's Theses

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have impairments in language acquisition, but the underlying mechanism of these deficits is poorly understood. Implicit learning appears potentially relevant to language development, particularly in speech segmentation, which relies on sensitivity to the transitional probabilities between speech sounds. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between implicit learning and current language abilities in school-aged children with autism (n = 17) and typical development (n = 24) using a well-studied artificial language learning task. Results suggest that the ASD and TD groups were equally able to implicitly learn transitional probabilities from a lengthy …

Aronia Mitschurinii: Solving A Horticultural Enigma, Peter J. Leonard Aug 2011

Aronia Mitschurinii: Solving A Horticultural Enigma, Peter J. Leonard

Master's Theses

Aronia (Medik.), commonly known as chokeberry, is a taxonomically misunderstood genus currently experiencing a renaissance in North America as both an ornamental and fruit crop. Three species of chokeberry are commonly accepted as native in North America: A. arbutifolia (L.) Pers. red chokeberry; A. melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot, black chokeberry; and A. prunifolia (Marshall) Rehder, or purple chokeberry. In Europe a fourth species of human origin is recognized as Aronia mitschurinii (A.K.Skvortsov & Maitul.), or cultivated, black-fruited Aronia. It is widely speculated that this genotype originated in the early 20th century with Russian pomologist Ivan Michurin, as the product …

Amibe: An Imperative Programming Language With First Class Continuations, Yuting Wang Aug 2011

Amibe: An Imperative Programming Language With First Class Continuations, Yuting Wang

Master's Theses

A continuation represents the future of an execution. It is often used as an intermediate representation(IR) to compile functional programming languages, make control flow explicit and full beta-reduction(function inlining) possible. Continuations are also a language feature that gives user the ability to completely control the execution control flow(first class continuation). Efficient implementation of first class continuation is important for languages that need non-determinism and backtracking(e.g., COMET). We present a prototype imperative programming language with first class continuation -- AMIBE. AMIBE uses the LLVM compiler infrastructure which is attractive for its optimizing tools and overall modern organization. However, LLVM does not …
