Landbird Response To Fine-Scale Habitat Characteristics Within Riparian Forests Of The Central California Coast, Ronald E. Melcer Jr. Mar 2012

Landbird Response To Fine-Scale Habitat Characteristics Within Riparian Forests Of The Central California Coast, Ronald E. Melcer Jr.

Master's Theses

Riparian corridors in California are known to be an important but reduced and degraded resource for landbirds. In spite of previous research, the habitat characteristics that correlate with high landbird abundance remain poorly understood. In particular, the scale at which predictive models are useful (fine scale, watershed, sub-region or region) is ill defined. Herein, point count-based abundance indices for 8 riparian associated/obligate species with uniform and high detection probabilities are correlated with biotic and abiotic habitat variables: a sums of squares procedure is used to select the top 5 predictive variables for each species, best fit linear models are selected …

Responsive Materials Via Diels-Alder Chemistry, Gregory Alan Strange Mar 2012

Responsive Materials Via Diels-Alder Chemistry, Gregory Alan Strange

Master's Theses

The corrosion of infrastructure imposes a significant monetary cost, and at times human cost, upon society. Methods to improve corrosion resistance of materials are described herein which utilize the reversibility of the Diels-Alder reaction to impart thermal responsiveness upon materials. Such stimuli responsiveness can potentially play a role in self healing properties which lead to reduced cracking and thus increased corrosion protection.

Reversible Diels-Alder chemistry was utilized to manipulate the surface energy of glass substrates. Hydrophobic dieneophiles were prepared and attached to glass slides and capillaries to yield a nonwetting surface. Thermal treatment of the surfaces cleaved the Diels-Alder linkage, …

Evaluating Geomorphic Change In Little Creek Using Repeated Cross-Sectional And Longitudinal Profile Surveys, Drew Allen Perkins

Master's Theses

Six geomorphic study reaches were established in 2002 along a forested mountain stream (gradients range from 0.02 to 0.05) on Cal Poly's Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz County, California. These study reaches are a component of paired and nested watershed studies in the approximately 500 hectare Little Creek watershed. The overall goal of this study was to monitor water quality and channel conditions before, during, and after a selective harvest of redwood. A selective harvest occurred in the North Fork of Little Creek in Summer 2008. In August 2009, approximately 90% of the Little Creek Watershed was burned in …

Comparing The Demographics Of Two Steelhead Populations And Their Habitat Characteristics, Eileen Ann Baglivio Mar 2012

Comparing The Demographics Of Two Steelhead Populations And Their Habitat Characteristics, Eileen Ann Baglivio

Master's Theses

Currently, little is known about the demographics of the Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus, or steelhead trout, populations in San Luis Obispo County. Specifically, demographic information including length, age, and condition when first leaving a watershed for the open ocean is lacking. This thesis takes a closer look at a biological and environmental data collected by the California Department of Fish and Game Central Coast Steelhead and Coho Salmon project under the direction of Associate Biologist Jennifer Nelson. The main goal of this thesis is to analyze demographic and habitat data from the steelhead populations of two northern San Luis Obispo …

Development Of A Standardized Method For Comparing Biomechanical Properties Of Various Sternal Closure Techniques, Ramzi P. Hawit

Master's Theses

Background:

33.6% of all deaths in America are caused by cardiovascular disease. An estimated 82.6 million adults (>1 in 3) in America have some form of cardiovascular disease. There were over 400,000 bypass surgeries requiring open-heart surgery. Sternal dehiscence is associated with a morbidity rate of over 47% if mediastinitis supervenes. A rigid closure is required to avoid healing complications, and wire, plates, and bands are all used in an attempt to make a better closure. The purpose of this study it to compare multiple closures and validate a new testing method.

Methods:

Polyurethane foam blocks will be used, …

Bacterial Source Tracking Of E. Coli In A Constructed Wetland, Rose M. Martin Feb 2012

Bacterial Source Tracking Of E. Coli In A Constructed Wetland, Rose M. Martin

Master's Theses

Bacterial source tracking was used to identify sources of fecal contamination in a constructed wetland. Nucleotide sequence differences in the Escherichia coli malate dehydrogenase (mdh) gene were used to distinguish between strains isolated from pigeon and cattle feces. Fourteen E. coli isolates were taken from cattle and pigeon fecal samples and sixteen E. coli isolates were taken from wetland water samples. A region of the E. coli mdh gene was amplified via PCR and sequenced. Twelve distinct sequences were obtained. Water samples indicated the presence of both pigeon and cattle fecal contamination in the wetland. Six sequences distinct …

Agency Through Ambiguity: Women Ngo Workers In Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda Feb 2012

Agency Through Ambiguity: Women Ngo Workers In Jalalabad, Afghanistan, Melissa S. Kerr Chiovenda

Master's Theses

Pashtun women working for international NGOs and development organizations in Jalalabad Afghanistan balance the requirements of their employment with a set values, known as doing pashto, that guide their behavior as Pashtuns. These two influences on their lives are often contradictory. Based on fieldwork in Jalalabad, this study suggests that Pashtun women working for such organizations do not overtly resist Pashtun norms that often enforce a strict segregation of women. Rather, they use strategic ambiguity, maintaining that they are performing pashto well while at the same time taking part in some work activities that on the surface appear contrary to …

Agency, Structures And Peru: Action And In-Action During 1980-2000, Kimberly A. Protzel Feb 2012

Agency, Structures And Peru: Action And In-Action During 1980-2000, Kimberly A. Protzel

Master's Theses

The Shining Path along with Alberto Fujimori's presidency in Peru (encompassing the years 1980-2000) created a terrifying chaos that was wound up in both state and insurgent terrorism, corruption, and massacres. While this chaos is inextricably linked to Peru's history, I fear is being all too quickly forgotten. My main motivation behind this research has been to take a step towards increasing awareness of these events and the many reasons behind them: the agenic nature of some versus the lack of it in others, structures developed by colonialism, and most terrifyingly of all - willful ignorance. By understanding these reasons, …

The Design And Fabrication Of A Microfluidic Reactor For Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Using Silicon And Glass Substrates, Peter Robert Gonsalves Feb 2012

The Design And Fabrication Of A Microfluidic Reactor For Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Using Silicon And Glass Substrates, Peter Robert Gonsalves

Master's Theses

A microfluidic reactor for synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) was synthesized out of a silicon wafer and Pyrex glass. Microfabrication techniques were used to etch channels into the silicon wafer. Holes were wet-drilled into the Pyrex glass using a diamond-tip drill bit. The Pyrex wafer was anodically bonded to the etched silicon wafer to enclose the microfluidic reactor. Conditions for anodic bonding were created by exposing the stacked substrates to 300V at ~350oC under 5.46N of force. A syringe containing a room temperature CdSe solution was interfaced to the microfluidic reactor by using Poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as an …

Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess Feb 2012

Polar Field Oriented Control With 3rd Harmonic Injection, Martin Todd Hess

Master's Theses

Abstract

POLAR FIELD-ORIENTED CONTROL

with

3RD HARMONIC INJECTION

Martin Todd Hess

Field Oriented Control (FOC), also known as vector control, is a widely used and well documented method for controlling Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and induction motors. Almost invariably the orientation of the stator and rotor (field) fluxes are described in rectangular coordinates. In this thesis we explore the practicality of using polar coordinates.

Third harmonic injection is also a well-known technique that allows full utilization of the bus (DC-link), thus allowing the motor to run to full base speed without the use of field weakening. This technique potentially …

Determination Of The Modal Parameters Of A Five Story Reinforced Concrete Structure Using Ultra-Low Level Excitation And Computational Analysis, Adam Russell Rendon Feb 2012

Determination Of The Modal Parameters Of A Five Story Reinforced Concrete Structure Using Ultra-Low Level Excitation And Computational Analysis, Adam Russell Rendon

Master's Theses

The determination of a building’s modal parameters (natural periods and mode shapes) using ultra-low level forced vibration testing and analytical modeling were critically compared. The structure utilized for this experiment is the Robert E. Kennedy Library on the campus of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, a five-story reinforced concrete shear wall structure. The specific testing procedure used has been verified to produce accurate results in smaller buildings, but the Kennedy Library represents the most massive subject structure. Other characteristics of this structure that make it unique include a large atrium at the center of the building and modes …

Pico-Satellite Integrated System Level Test Program, Marcus A. Ruddy Feb 2012

Pico-Satellite Integrated System Level Test Program, Marcus A. Ruddy

Master's Theses

Testing is an integral part of a satellite’s development, requirements verification and risk mitigation efforts. A robust test program serves to verify construction, integration and assembly workmanship, ensures component, subsystem and system level functionality and reduces risk of mission or capability loss on orbit.

The objective of this thesis was to develop a detailed test program for pico-satellites with a focus on the Cal Poly CubeSat architecture. The test program established a testing baseline from which other programs or users could tailor to meet their needs. Inclusive of the test program was a detailed decomposition of discrete and derived test …

Experimental Investigation Of Suction Slot Geometry On A Goldschmied Propulsor, Nicole M. Thomason Feb 2012

Experimental Investigation Of Suction Slot Geometry On A Goldschmied Propulsor, Nicole M. Thomason

Master's Theses

The Goldschmied Propulsor concept combines boundary layer suction and boundary layer ingestion to improve propulsive efficiency and reduce drag on an axisymmetric body. This investigation of a Goldschmied Propulsor aimed to determine influential characteristics of the suction slot geometry to aid in better slot geometry design and to decrease the suction flow requirements for maintaining attached flow over the entire model surface. The Propulsor model was 38.5 inches in length with a max diameter of 13.5 inches. Three suction slot geometries were investigated with the addition of aluminum cusps to the slot entrance. The cusps varied in the distance they …

Design And Analysis Of A Reusable N2o-Cooled Aerospike Nozzle For Labscale Hybrid Rocket Motor Testing, Daniel Joseph Grieb Feb 2012

Design And Analysis Of A Reusable N2o-Cooled Aerospike Nozzle For Labscale Hybrid Rocket Motor Testing, Daniel Joseph Grieb

Master's Theses

A reusable oxidizer-cooled annular aerospike nozzle was designed for testing on a labscale PMMA-N20[1] hybrid rocket motor at Cal Poly-SLO.[2] The detailed design was based on the results of previous research involving cold-flow testing of annular aerospike nozzles and hot-flow testing of oxidizer-cooled converging-diverging nozzles. In the design, nitrous oxide is routed to the aerospike through a tube that runs up the middle of the combustion chamber. The solid fuel is arranged in an annular configuration, with a solid cylinder of fuel in the center of the combustion chamber and a hollow cylinder of fuel lining …

Dynamic Model Creation And Scripting Support In The Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian Jeffrey Butler Feb 2012

Dynamic Model Creation And Scripting Support In The Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian Jeffrey Butler

Master's Theses

Dynamic model creation and support for the Lua scripting language was added to the Horizon Simulation Framework used for the verification and validation of system-level requirements. The addition of scripting support allows for subsystem models and their algorithms to be defined using a simpler scripting language, rather than C++. The Luabind library by Rasterbind software is used to expose the C++ algorithms and classes to Lua that are already defined in the framework. Interoperability between Lua and C++ code allows for the ease of use of a scripting language while utilizing the utility classes and functions already created. The dynamic …

The Multi-Scale Dynamics Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas Jan 2012

The Multi-Scale Dynamics Of Executive Function, Jason Anastas

Master's Theses

Cognitive control is a central issue in developmental psychology. Traditional theories of psychology solve this problem by positing a top-down central executive, which coordinates cognitive resources in pursuit of goals. We propose an alternative explanation: cognitive control arises from physical interactions across many different timescales within the system. College and preschool aged participants were asked to complete a simple executive function task, card sorting. We found that multi-scale physical interactions differed depending on experimental constraints, and that executive function in these cases was driven primarily by flexibility in multi-scale interactions, rather than the dominance of one scale. This suggests that, …

Second Generation Data-Logging System For Long-Duration Field Measurement Of Vibration Exposure And Grip Force, Robert H. Knapp Iii Jan 2012

Second Generation Data-Logging System For Long-Duration Field Measurement Of Vibration Exposure And Grip Force, Robert H. Knapp Iii

Master's Theses

Millions of United States workers are exposed to vibration at their job, whether it is from a power tool that causes hand and arm vibration or from heavy machinery. These vibrations are known to result in physical disorders such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome, which can be debilitating to the point where workers can no longer do their job effectively. Research groups have taken an interest in finding what vibration characteristics are most harmful and choose to record vibration information using data-logging devices. Often, many devices, whether they are commercial or custom-built devices, use frequency weightings and full day estimations to …

Desert Hedgehog Is A Mammal-Specific Gene Expressed During Testicular And Ovarian Development In A Marsupial, William A. O'Hara Jan 2012

Desert Hedgehog Is A Mammal-Specific Gene Expressed During Testicular And Ovarian Development In A Marsupial, William A. O'Hara

Master's Theses

Desert hedgehog (DHH) belongs to the hedgehog gene family that act as secreted intercellular signal transducers. DHH is an essential morphogen for normal testicular development and function in both mice and humans but is not present in the avian lineage. Like other hedgehog proteins, DHH signals through the patched (PTCH) receptors 1 and 2. Here we examine the expression and protein distribution of DHH, PTCH1 and PTCH2 in the developing testes of a marsupial mammal (the tammar wallaby) to determine whether DHH signalling is a conserved factor in gonadal development in all therian mammals.

Challenges And Livelihood Strategies Of Darfurian Refugees Living In Kampala, Uganda, Angela F. Lucia Jan 2012

Challenges And Livelihood Strategies Of Darfurian Refugees Living In Kampala, Uganda, Angela F. Lucia

Master's Theses

The phenomenon of urban refugees poses many challenges to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), host governments, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are providing services to them, thereby posing many challenges to the refugees themselves in having their needs addressed. My research with the Darfurian refugee population in Kampala, Uganda provides evidence on this relatively new Diaspora. Data was collected from June 2011 to August 2011, with the assistance of members of the Darfurian Refugee Association in Uganda (DRAU). Sixty-six respondents participated in the research, through methods including a questionnaire with open-ended questions to fifty-two refugees, fourteen semi-structured …

South Sudan & The “Global Land Grab”: Implications For The Future Of Food Security, Sarah Falltrick Jan 2012

South Sudan & The “Global Land Grab”: Implications For The Future Of Food Security, Sarah Falltrick

Master's Theses

Abstract

More than 870 million people across the world do not have enough to eat, 98 percent of them live in developing countries. While researchers disagree on the causes of hunger, they all agree that it is a pressing concern. South Sudan occupies some of the most fertile land with access to several major water sources -- all the ingredients for a thriving agriculture sector -- and yet, it is a net food importer. Worse, 60 percent of the population does not consume enough food to provide a nutritious diet. Why does a country with all the best natural endowments …

Characterization Of Mixing In A T-Style Microfluidic Chip, Brian Eric Harley Jan 2012

Characterization Of Mixing In A T-Style Microfluidic Chip, Brian Eric Harley

Master's Theses

The goal of this study is to characterize the mixing that occurs in a microfluidic chip. To characterize the mixing, the minimum length to complete mixing and evolution of mixing will be investigated. There are two types of mixing that occur within a microfluidic channel, diffusion and advection. In the beginning of the microfluidic chip, diffusion is the dominant form of mixing, and in the later portion of the microfluidic chip advection is the dominant form of mixing. The type of design used for this experiment was a zig zag geometry microfluidic chip with channel dimensions of 60 µm X …

An Exploratory Investigation Into The Use Of Eaup As An Alternative To Text-Based Passwords, Joseph Ahor Abandoh-Sam Jan 2012

An Exploratory Investigation Into The Use Of Eaup As An Alternative To Text-Based Passwords, Joseph Ahor Abandoh-Sam

Master's Theses

Security is one of the major concerns of every industry in the world today. One of the best ways of hacking into a computer system is brute forcing. And with the increase in computing, brute forcing has become faster and easy to do. Text-based passwords are still the most popular and most commonly used form of authentication even though the requirements for a good password are still increasing. Research has shown that the best text-based passwords are the random ones that have no sequence or pattern to them. But this also makes it difficult to remember. Well- documented research has …

An Introduction To A Meta-Meta-Search Engine, Martin Lalnunsanga Jan 2012

An Introduction To A Meta-Meta-Search Engine, Martin Lalnunsanga

Master's Theses

Imagine that all the information in the entire world written in every known language, and every graphic image, video clip, or photograph copied digitally was available at your fingertips. This vast amount of data could then be reduced to digital data packets and stored in miniscule form on computer hard drives that are all connected by several other centrally located larger machines, called servers. However, searching for data in a vast system of inter-connected computers is virtually impossible using human faculties and is a far more intricate process than perusing book titles using the library's Dewey Decimal System. In order …

Nonnatives' Perceptions Of Group Work: A Study Of Their Attitudes And Experiences In The Group Work Setting, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues Jan 2012

Nonnatives' Perceptions Of Group Work: A Study Of Their Attitudes And Experiences In The Group Work Setting, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues

Master's Theses

Problem. Studies on group work in the field of second language learning have pointed out positive outcomes of this classroom instruction for providing output and input opportunities for language production, for negotiations of meaning, and for academic language. Furthermore, social-psychological factors that hinder language development are asserted to be prevented by the use of group work. Even though group work may create an excellent environment for second language acquisition, research has indicated that few opportunities seem to be conceded for second language speakers to take active participation in discussions. In short, it seems that nonnatives’ interactions are hindered due to …

Socially Including A 'Resistant People': Intercultural Education And The Roma In Italy, Mary Cristine Mcsweeney Jan 2012

Socially Including A 'Resistant People': Intercultural Education And The Roma In Italy, Mary Cristine Mcsweeney

Master's Theses

As "the situation of the Roma" in Europe has grown increasingly concerning, the European Union (EU) has urged Member States to promote the social inclusion of this diverse population. While the EU has challenged Member States to implement intercultural education, Italy has claimed its own "via Italiana" (or "Italian way") as to how it is going about this process. In an attempt to better understand intercultural education and the role of education in social inclusion projects, this paper aims to address the following questions: What are some of the implications of the intercultural educational initiative currently underway in Italy with …

The Hybrid Laboratory: Informal Spaces For Public-Science Interaction, Whitney Ann Ferrin-Rodriguez Jan 2012

The Hybrid Laboratory: Informal Spaces For Public-Science Interaction, Whitney Ann Ferrin-Rodriguez

Master's Theses

While growing trends in participatory science and public outreach have made science more accessible to publics, science communities and publics have long interpreted science and laboratories as private domains, perpetuating the idea that science is reserved for "experts" and locations for science are deemed "private." Many studies that examine public-science interaction, however, seldom consider the role of space and place. I argue that material spaces shape public-science interactions. My analysis takes place at an institutionalized informal education platform: a hybrid laboratory: a space used by "expert" astronomers to create new visual knowledge and "lay" publics to actively participate in astronomy. …

From Individual Conscience To Parish Culture: A Study Of Two Catholic Parishes In The Archdiocese Of Chicago, Lucas S. Sharma Jan 2012

From Individual Conscience To Parish Culture: A Study Of Two Catholic Parishes In The Archdiocese Of Chicago, Lucas S. Sharma

Master's Theses

The Roman Catholic Church is unique in having a unified set of institutional teachings across one billion people in the world including sixty million American Catholics. However, previous quantitative and qualitative studies in sociology suggest that Catholics are not unified in their beliefs but are actually quite diverse. Additionally, Baggett (2009) suggests that Catholics form distinct parish cultures on the local level, and that these parishes are the location that a majority of Catholics experience their faith. What is not know, however, is how Catholic parishes form cultures, especially around political issues. This study aims to understand exactly this by …

One Sex, One School, Who Wins: How Single-Sex Learning Environments Impact Educational Attainment, Socio-Emotional Health, And Ambitions, Bradley Kirshenbaum Jan 2012

One Sex, One School, Who Wins: How Single-Sex Learning Environments Impact Educational Attainment, Socio-Emotional Health, And Ambitions, Bradley Kirshenbaum

Master's Theses

Research on single-sex schools has covered a variety of matters regarding the effectiveness of their programs. This paper examines research on single-sex schools over the past 30 years in an effort to harmonize the past discourse with present trends. Journal articles and government research were used to synthesize the variety of methods used to ascertain whether single-sex schools have a positive influence on boys, girls, or both parties. Research trends have overwhelmingly supported all-girls schools, while remaining skeptical of any positive influence on boys. Much of the research supporting all-girls schools also suggests that single-sex schools' benefits are applicable to …

Determination Of The Molecular Mechanisms Of Hyperglycemia-Induced Changes In Cav3.2 Calcium Channel Properties, Ginny Marie Keeling Jan 2012

Determination Of The Molecular Mechanisms Of Hyperglycemia-Induced Changes In Cav3.2 Calcium Channel Properties, Ginny Marie Keeling

Master's Theses

Hyperglycemia can cause altered excitability due to increased CaV3.2 T-type calcium channel function, bestowing diabetics an increased neuropathy risk. The objective of this study was to understand the molecular mechanisms of increased CaV3.2 function during hyperglycemia in vitro, which leads to a 58% increase in current density and increased channel open probability (PO), among other changes. Two major findings are reported in this study:

1) The enzymatic elimination of extracellular N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) moieties reversed the increase in current density and the shift in PO, showing that hyper-glycosylation alters channel function in disease.

2) Treatment with GM1 (a ganglioside highly …
