Naturalism, Murder, And Identity In Three Short Stories Of Ramon Ferreira, Haley Lee Osborn
Naturalism, Murder, And Identity In Three Short Stories Of Ramon Ferreira, Haley Lee Osborn
Master's Theses

Determining factors that encourage thinking and attending to information is an important aspect of working to help people learn more effectively. Characteristics of presenters have been found to be cues for information processing, related to the results of those being presented to. It was found that both client's liking and perceived expertise of the presenter were related to both program satisfaction and learning of educational materials. Determining factors that encourage thinking and attending to information is an important aspect of working to help people learn more effectively. Characteristics of presenters have been found to be cues for information processing, related …
The Comparative Morphology Of The Pectoral Free Rays In Scorpaenoid Fishes (Perciformes: Scorpaenoidea)), Jeremy Peter Harris
The Comparative Morphology Of The Pectoral Free Rays In Scorpaenoid Fishes (Perciformes: Scorpaenoidea)), Jeremy Peter Harris
Master's Theses
The pectoral fins of many benthic taxa have evolved many unique features used to interact with the substrate. In one such group, the searobins (Triglidae: Scorpaenoidea), three of the pectoral fin rays have become separated from the fin as a whole, allowing them to operate as a separate appendage from the fin as a whole. The anatomical structure of these "free rays" was investigated and several previously unreported muscle and bone variations were found. This method was extended to include members of four other scorpaenoid families which possess free rays, which revealed important differences in the muscle, bone, and nervous …
Analysis Of The Minimal Promoter From The Hatching Enzyme A Gene, Anna Matejczyk
Analysis Of The Minimal Promoter From The Hatching Enzyme A Gene, Anna Matejczyk
Master's Theses
Hatching, defined as a biochemical or biophysical mechanism that allows the embryo to leave its protective envelope, is found in most animals. In fish, reptiles and amphibians, mostly oviparous animals, this means the emergence of the embryo from an egg. In mammals, viviparous animals, hatching is performed by the blastocyst in order to shed the zona pellucida.
Fish, an oviparous animal, takes advantage of a biochemical mechanism in order to hatch and emerge from their chorion, or egg envelope. The mechanism includes the use of hatching enzymes that are secreted in order to digest the envelope membrane. The genes controlling …
The Hook Up Hangover: The Decline In Traditional Dating Beyond The College Campus - Before Formal Commitment, Reginald Nievera
The Hook Up Hangover: The Decline In Traditional Dating Beyond The College Campus - Before Formal Commitment, Reginald Nievera
Master's Theses
The early 21st century is seeing unprecedented changes to the dating lives of American adults. Fewer than ever before are getting married and those that do want to marry, are waiting longer than ever before. This is breeding a new stage of development in our personal lives. It is a stage characterized by a prolonged gap between finishing school, becoming an "adult" and getting married or starting a family. It may be distinguished by years of being single and independent; simultaneously coming to terms with the responsibilities of adulthood, meeting romantic partners, casual dating, or courting potential lifelong companions. This …
The Influences Of Parental Expectations On Children's Academic Achievements: A Comparative Analysis Of The United States And China, Xiaoyu Wang
Master's Theses
Parenting is very important to children, and it directly or indirectly influences children's outcomes in schools. Parents express passions and strong desires to help their children to succeed regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, and they are highly interested in their children's education in school.
This paper is concerned with parental expectations for school-aged children in the United States and China under the influences of historical, cultural and social context. I will comprehensively compare relevant literature parts in both America and China, determining the distinctions in terms of various parenting patterns. Research about parental expectations in the two countries …
The Effect Of Vitamin D On Human T Regulatory Cell Differentiation, Stephanie Anne Chapman
The Effect Of Vitamin D On Human T Regulatory Cell Differentiation, Stephanie Anne Chapman
Master's Theses
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are required for the induction and maintenance of immune homeostasis. Singh et al. demonstrated that depletion of Tregs in mice results in a loss of self-tolerance that manifests in the development of autoimmune diseases such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In humans, autoimmune diseases such as IBD, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Type 1 Diabetes are thought to occur due to a deficiency in the number or function of Tregs. The importance of Tregs in modulating the human immune system is perhaps best exemplified by IPEX (immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, x-linked syndrome), a severe autoimmune disease characterized …
Women's Access To Secondary Education In Colonial And Postcolonial Tanzania And Rwanda, Emlyn Ashley Ricketts
Women's Access To Secondary Education In Colonial And Postcolonial Tanzania And Rwanda, Emlyn Ashley Ricketts
Master's Theses
This paper will examine how the politics of colonialism and independence during the twentieth century, as well as the culture of each country, have created and limited secondary educational opportunities for women in Tanzania and in Rwanda. I will argue that the English and Belgian colonizers' goals of the education systems in colonial Tanganyika and Ruanda-Urundi-how much education they thought was appropriate for women to have and their overarching goals in creating the education systems in the colonies-shaped the place of women within Tanzania and Rwanda today. I will argue that English and Belgian colonizers imposed a western, Christian, patriarchal …
Characterization Of Hydride-Based Silica And Diamond Hydride Stationary Phases, Nima C. Parmar
Characterization Of Hydride-Based Silica And Diamond Hydride Stationary Phases, Nima C. Parmar
Master's Theses
Aqueous normal phase chromatography possesses characteristics of both normal phase (NP) and also reverse phase (RP) chromatography. It can retain polar as well as non-polar compounds by carefully selecting the concentration ratio of organic solvent to water in the mobile phase. Silica hydride columns contain only a small percentage of silanol groups which are polar in nature and have an effect on the separation process. Diamond hydride columns consist of a small amount (~2%) of carbon chemically bonded to a silica hydride surface.
This research work characterized both hydride-based silica and diamond hydride stationary phases under isocratic and gradient conditions. …

Master's Theses
The purpose of this research was to analyze a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention, the Sanatana Yoga Prison Project (SYPP), at a California state prison. The SYPP had three interventions: pranayama (breathing techniques), asana (physical postures), and dhyana (meditation). The research question was, "What are the outcomes of a recreation therapy yoga meditation intervention on prison inmates' spiritual well-being?" This study used a mixed-method approach that included a modified Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), demographic data sheet, and semi-structured interviews that were face-to-face and audio-recorded. There were 31 participants in the control group and 31 participants in the experimental group. Spiritual …
Nowhere: Blank Verse Concerning Small-Town Life In California, Daniel Scarpa
Nowhere: Blank Verse Concerning Small-Town Life In California, Daniel Scarpa
Master's Theses
I wanted to explore the process of using place - specifically, small towns in California that I visited - as inspiration for the writing of a book of poetry. This has been done in the past, most notably by poets such as Kenneth Rexroth and Gary Snyder. I was inspired by these poets and several others and my own experience in these often overlooked small towns to create a collection of syllabic blank verse poems that touch on their economies, practical reasons for isolation, and unique micro-cultures. While on the whole, I am pleased with the way the collection turned …
Ecotourism As A Tool For Conservation Of Coast Redwoods In Santa Cruz County, California, Chandana Rao
Ecotourism As A Tool For Conservation Of Coast Redwoods In Santa Cruz County, California, Chandana Rao
Master's Theses
According to the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry, generating $300 billion in annual revenue. Ecotourism aims to control the damaging effects of conventional mass tourism and tries to overcome tourism's environmental and socio-cultural challenges. In an ideal situation, ecotourism can help conserve fragile biodiversity, build ties between parks and communities, and increase awareness of environmental issues; it also includes a profit impetus for businesses.
This research was conducted to evaluate the potential for developing ecotourism as a conservation tool in the four redwoods state parks of Santa Cruz County. The study assessed …

Accent-Based Implicit Prejudice: A Novel Application Of The Implicit Association Test, Carolyn Chu
Accent-Based Implicit Prejudice: A Novel Application Of The Implicit Association Test, Carolyn Chu
Master's Theses
In the present study, implicit attitudes toward accents were examined. The most common method used to study accent-based perceptions is by self-report questionnaires, which measure explicit attitudes. To my knowledge, no previous study has examined implicit accent-based attitudes. In the present investigation, auditory stimuli were used in a novel application of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to measure implicit accent attitudes. Participants were randomly assigned to listen to a passage read in one of three foreign accents (Mexican, Chinese, or British) and the same passage in a Standard American accent. Participants also completed the Speech Dialect Attitudinal Scale, which measured …
Natural Recovery Of Second-Growth Coast Redwood Stands In The Santa Cruz Mountains, Jeffrey M. Sinclair
Natural Recovery Of Second-Growth Coast Redwood Stands In The Santa Cruz Mountains, Jeffrey M. Sinclair
Master's Theses
The natural recovery of coast redwood forests following a logging event is not fully understood. Recent studies, in the redwood central range, have found that un-restored and unmanaged second-growth forest stands can begin to recover and exhibit characteristics of old-growth stands within 100 years or less. The goal of this study was to determine if redwood stands in their southern range are recovering naturally. A total of 160 sample plots were selected randomly within old-growth and second-growth study sites. The data collected included stand density, tree size structure, canopy cover, species diversity, and species composition. Special habitat features were analyzed …
Les Sociétés Secrètes Dans Les Romans De Balzac, Maria Jose Moore
Les Sociétés Secrètes Dans Les Romans De Balzac, Maria Jose Moore
Master's Theses
Balzac employs a kaleidoscopic form of novel writing by introducing his characters in a mosaic fashion, allowing the reader to come to know them as in real life through various encounters. This provides numerous glimpses into the development of secret societies, an important theme in Romanticism. This thesis showed that the novel as a genre is itself a secret society, in which Balzac uses the secrets in the novel not only to drive the plot, but also to express himself in a veiled fashion to the reader who looks for a more intimate connection with the Balzacian text.
This thesis …
A Girlhood Of Myth, Dreams, And Trauma: Redefining The Asian North American Female Bildungsroman, Danielle Brianna Crawford
A Girlhood Of Myth, Dreams, And Trauma: Redefining The Asian North American Female Bildungsroman, Danielle Brianna Crawford
Master's Theses
This thesis examines the use of myth, dreams, and historical trauma within the genre of the Asian North American female bildungsroman. In an attempt to redefine the contested genre of the ethnic bildungsroman, this study analyzes three novels by Asian American and Asian Canadian female authors: Cecilia Manguerra Brainard's When the Rainbow Goddess Wept (1991), Joy Kogawa's Obasan (1981), and Lan Cao's Monkey Bridge (1997). Each of these novels is an ethnic bildungsroman that highlights the identity formation of a female protagonist in the midst of historical trauma. This study focuses on the ways in which these texts resist the …
Immobilization Of Rhodococcus Erythropolis As A Potential Treatment For Atherosclerosis, Srikanth Darbha
Immobilization Of Rhodococcus Erythropolis As A Potential Treatment For Atherosclerosis, Srikanth Darbha
Master's Theses
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and isprimarily due to hypercholesterolemia. The novel approach of combatting atherosclerosis presented in this research entails delivery of microencapsulated Rhodococcus erythropolis immobilized in biodegradable alginate-based microcapsules and utilizing the bacterium's cholesterol oxidase enzyme pathway to degrade cholesterol from intermediate-stage arterial plaque. The bacterial growth medium was optimized using Taguchi design methods to enable growth characterizations hindered by biosurfactant by-product. Methodologies for extraction and quantification of biosurfactant and cholesterol were developed and conducted simultaneous to bacterial growth assessment. Bacteria were encapsulated using atomization (850±50 μm) and inkjet bioprinting (32±5 …
An Ecological Assessment Of Insect Diversity At Organic Central Coast Vegetable Farms On Two Spatial Scales, Emily Musgrave
An Ecological Assessment Of Insect Diversity At Organic Central Coast Vegetable Farms On Two Spatial Scales, Emily Musgrave
Master's Theses
Modern industrial agriculture is the principal cause of anthropogenic land use changes for terrestrial ecosystems. Approximately 40% of the planet's land surface, or half of the habitable area, is now composed of agricultural landscapes. The simplification and industrialization of agriculture are the biggest drivers of global biodiversity loss, especially on Californian's Central Coast. Diversified organic agriculture, however, may offer some refuge for non-crop species. In this study we analyzed insect and plant biodiversity on and adjacent to organic vegetable farms on the Central Coast of California at two spatial scales, the landscape-scale and a smaller within-farm scale. At the landscape-scale, …
Galois Theory And The Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem, Damien Adams
Galois Theory And The Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem, Damien Adams
Master's Theses
We study abstract algebra and Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem. We give an exposition of Galois theory and Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem: given any irreducible polynomial f(t1, t2, …, tn, x) over the rational numbers, there are an infinite number of rational n-tuples (a1, a2, …, an) such that f(a1, a2, …, an, x) is irreducible over the rational numbers.
We take a preliminary look at linear algebra, symmetric groups, extension fields, splitting fields, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem. We follow this by studying …
A Dancing Paradox: Oral Histories Of Dance Pedagogy, Stephanie Marie Anderson
A Dancing Paradox: Oral Histories Of Dance Pedagogy, Stephanie Marie Anderson
Master's Theses
This research investigates how dancers constitute and make sense of themselves and the worlds they live in through the interstitial, and intersectional processes of remembering. I investigate the following two research questions within this thesis: 1) How do dancers remember their pedagogical experiences in dance studios? 2) What happens to oral histories when they are approached as dances, and when they are literally danced? I frame the first research question within my literature review and I investigate what I call Traditional Western Dance Pedagogy. While the characteristics of Traditional Western Dance Pedagogy are not universal, unchanging, and absolute, they are …
Funding Sources Of Impactful And Transformative Research, Barrett Anderson
Funding Sources Of Impactful And Transformative Research, Barrett Anderson
Master's Theses
Understanding how the most important scientific articles have been funded can help inform and improve future funding decisions. Importance is here defined as science that, in the metaphor of the tree of knowledge, plays a structurally significant role (e.g., creates new branches of knowledge or transforms existing ones). The structural significance of articles is broken down into two submeasures: citation count and "generativity" (a novel measure defined as being highly cited and also leading to a comparatively large number of other highly cited articles). Generativity is an attempt to provide a quantitative operationalization that should correlate with transformativeness, a concept …
Farms On Campus: Strong Stakeholder Support For An Educational Garden At A Non-Land-Grant University, Gina M. Bacigalupi
Farms On Campus: Strong Stakeholder Support For An Educational Garden At A Non-Land-Grant University, Gina M. Bacigalupi
Master's Theses
University farms and gardens are increasingly seen as effective tools for learning a variety of academic subjects and as resources that allow users to connect experientially to nature. Most existing university farms, however, are found at resource-rich land-grant universities. This research evaluated stakeholder interest and willingness-to-pay in money, time, and labor for a proposed educational farm at a public, urban, non-land-grant university through an online survey of over 400 members of the California State University East Bay, Concord Campus community. Overall, support for an educational farm at this site was high amongst all stakeholder groups. Students and stakeholders who hold …
Internalized Oppression: Latino Narratives On Educational Experience, Carolina Avalos
Internalized Oppression: Latino Narratives On Educational Experience, Carolina Avalos
Master's Theses
A qualitative study investigated the lived experiences and impact of internalized oppression within educational contexts. Six Latino-identified people--ages 22-38--who are current or former college students were interviewed about their early and adult educational experiences. A constant comparative methodology was used to identify commonalities found in participant narratives. Interview transcripts and field notes were analyzed to organize data into themes. Emergent themes included: (a) identity formation, (b) experience of racial micro-aggression in school, and (c) the value of acquiring an occupation being valued higher, in the household, than educational attainment. Findings provided insight into participant experiences with internalized oppression and educational …
Intra-Annual Changes In Population Parameters As Indicators Of Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae) Migratory Behavior, Casey Clark
Master's Theses
Many techniques used to study animal migrations rely on observations of specific animals, which provide valuable information about individuals studied but do not capture population variability. By examining changes in population parameters, researchers may gain a better understanding of migratory behaviors. In this study, intra-annual changes in population parameters were used to study migratory behaviors of humpback whales off central California in 2011/2012. Data were compared with a historic dataset from 2004/2005. Parameters measured included sex ratio, pregnancy rate, mitochondrial DNA haplotype frequencies and mean δ13C and δ15N values. Weighted moving averages of the sex ratio were moderately effective at …
Theoretical And Experimental Exploration Of Gill Remodeling In Gambusia Affinis, Barbara Tess Douglas
Theoretical And Experimental Exploration Of Gill Remodeling In Gambusia Affinis, Barbara Tess Douglas
Master's Theses
In this thesis, the phenomenon of gill remodeling discovered in several species of fish is explored. Gill remodeling is achieved through an increase or decrease in cells within the interlamellar space, termed the interlamellar cell mass (ILCM). The effect of the ILCM on flow is explored using a theoretical model gill section. The model gill section was compared in three states: full ILCM, half ILCM, and clear (no ILCM). Differences in surface area, total flow, flow velocities, oxygen uptake, and available oxygen were compared between the three conditions. All parameters were distinctly larger for the model without the ILCM indicating …
Evaluation Of The Cmip5 Decadal Hindcasts In The State Of California, Colin Mckellar
Evaluation Of The Cmip5 Decadal Hindcasts In The State Of California, Colin Mckellar
Master's Theses
This study investigated the ability of the new Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) decadal hindcasts to predict the observed decadal variability for maximum temperature (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin) in California over two historical periods in the 20th century and one future period in the 21st century. Annual and seasonal California temperature trends were computed by averaging 54 United States Historical Climate Network version 2 temperature observations from 1960-1990 and 1980-2010. Modeled California temperatures were reconstructed with bi-linear interpolation from the CMIP5 decadal hindcasts and 20th century experiments. The individual model ensemble averages (MEA) and mean model ensemble …
