Loose Coupling Within Special Education, Christina Sedrel
Loose Coupling Within Special Education, Christina Sedrel
Master's Theses
Since the Salamanca Framework was established in 1994, countries have made a concerted effort to work to promote special education, namely inclusive education or inclusion. The recognition of students with special educational needs (SEN) has lead to national policies in which students with SEN are brought into the classroom along side their peers. Despite these efforts, there is an interruption between policy and practice which ultimately prevent students with SEN to enter the classroom or to receive an education. This thesis looks at the loose coupling of policy and practice with in special education by analyzing the practices of nine …
Culture Wars: A Quest For Justice In Arizona, Crystal Lynne Pfeiffer
Culture Wars: A Quest For Justice In Arizona, Crystal Lynne Pfeiffer
Master's Theses
The Southwest is the location of an ongoing culture clash between proponents of a unified "American" culture and Mexican-American culture. The significance of the debate is not just about Mexican-American studies; it reflects a broader debate about individual and collective identity in the United States. The two cultures have historically had a contentious relationship that is further intensified by their geographical proximity to one another. Some of the tensions have culminated in a conflict within the school system between supporters and opponents of Mexican-American studies. One side of the debate sees the program as a means to help students succeed …
Constructive Feedback In L2 Writing With Chinese High School Students In Taiwan, Chiawei Diane Yang
Constructive Feedback In L2 Writing With Chinese High School Students In Taiwan, Chiawei Diane Yang
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the lack of motivation in L2 writing of Chinese high school students in Taiwan. The subject of this study was to examine how age, culture, and the education system in Taiwan influenced students’ motivation in learning English writing. It provided insight about how academic environments influence students’ motivation in learning English, how teachers’ feedback shapes students’ learning attitudes, and effective ways to increase students’ motivation and self-esteem. The study utilized Krashen’s (1981) affective filter hypothesis and Dornyei’s (1994) three levels of motivation theory. Ten Taiwanese students participated in this study. All of …
Inside Jokes: English Language Humor From The Outside, Mieka D. Strawhorn
Inside Jokes: English Language Humor From The Outside, Mieka D. Strawhorn
Master's Theses
Humor is a complex and dynamic mode of communication that serves a number of important social functions. While humor is found in all cultures, English language learners (ELLs) in the United States must learn to navigate American humor with all of its inherent cultural, social and linguistic particularities. The ability to appreciate, comprehend and produce humor is a critical and necessary skillset for full fluency in English. Research has been done on the subject of incorporating humor into the language classroom and the benefits of doing so are myriad (Bell, 2005; 2009). However, very little research has been done on …
Teaching English As A Second Language Through Rap Music: A Curriculum For Secondary School Students, Beth Segal
Teaching English As A Second Language Through Rap Music: A Curriculum For Secondary School Students, Beth Segal
Master's Theses
This project provides a sample of the curriculum, Rapping English, which uses rap/hip-hop style music to teach ELLs vocabulary, grammar, discourse and prosody. The rationale for using musical instruction is based on Gardner’s (2006) multiple intelligence theory and Bloom’s (1978) learning domains. This curriculum instructs students through musical intelligence and the affective domain which are often neglected in traditional instruction. Furthermore, this project explores how musical curriculum can be used to lower the affective filter (Krashen, 1981) and provide emotionally appealing and memory stimulating instruction in line with the findings of current neuropsychology, specifically the work of R. Caine and …
Teaching Reading As An Integrated Skill: An Evaluation Of Two Popular Esl Textbooks, Ingrid Mcvanner
Teaching Reading As An Integrated Skill: An Evaluation Of Two Popular Esl Textbooks, Ingrid Mcvanner
Master's Theses
As the population of non-native English speakers rises in the United States, so too does the need for effective English language instruction, and with that, effective instructional materials. With a growing population of adult English language learners with below basic prose literacy, the need for effective adult English language literacy instruction is also evident. Because people do not use one skill at a time, this project evaluates the reading materials in two adult English language integrated skills textbooks from major publishers of ESL materials in order to provide insight into the preparation of effective integrated skills textbooks designed for adult …

On The Job Teacher Training For Native English-Speaking Teachers In South Korean Intensive English Kindergartens, Elizabeth Christensen
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine how native English-speaking teachers from Western countries adapt to teaching Korean kindergarten students within South Korea while adapting to both teaching and working within South Korea. To collect data for the study, eight native English-speaking teachers were interviewed about their training and teaching experiences in South Korea. Results show that many native English-speaking teachers desire better communication from their supervisors during new teacher training programs. The participants especially wanted to have a clearer understanding of their supervisor’s expectations for them. In the interviews, many of the native English-speaking teachers expressed a wish …
Countering The Dreamer Narrative: Storytelling, Immigration Reform, And The Work Of 67 Sueños, Drew Schmenner
Countering The Dreamer Narrative: Storytelling, Immigration Reform, And The Work Of 67 Sueños, Drew Schmenner
Master's Theses
Research question: How has the practice of storytelling been used in the current U.S. conflicts over immigration?
Telling an effective story is an essential part of a complex strategy to bring about social change, but storytelling as a part of collective action has not been extensively studied. For activists in the United States fighting for immigrant rights, especially the passage of the DREAM Act, storytelling has been an important tactic, but the nature of the narrative that was constructed has its drawbacks because it excluded some members of the immigrant community. In 2010, the Bay Area-based group 67 Sueños (“67 …
Proteomic Analysis Of Mammary Epithelial Cell Development, Alyssa Kay Conly
Proteomic Analysis Of Mammary Epithelial Cell Development, Alyssa Kay Conly
Master's Theses
In this set of studies, a proteomic approach was used to investigate the protein profile of the mammary epithelial cell (MEC) through different stages of mammary development. The HC11 cell line was used to investigate protein changes between undifferentiated and differentiated MEC, which represent the pregnant and lactating states of the cells. This comparison revealed an interesting differential expression profile underscoring many recognized processes that occur in differentiated MECs, while others unveiled differences between MEC differentiation in vitro and in vivo. Primary MEC were also isolated from virgin, pregnant, and primiparous quiescent mice to compare the virgin state of the …

The Legacy Of Antonio Sant'elia: An Analysis Of Sant'elia's Posthumous Role In The Development Of Italian Futurism During The Fascist Era, Ashley Gardini
Master's Theses
This thesis is an examination of the posthumous legacy of Antonio Sant'Elia propagated by F.T. Marinetti during the 1920s and `30s in Fascist Italy. It is during the period of Second Futurism that the Manifesto of Futurist Architecture and the images from the La Città Nuova series came to define Sant'Elia's identity as the figurehead of Futurist architecture. This research contributes to the scholarly discussion of Second Futurism by giving context to specific actions taken by Marinetti during the Fascist era to control how Sant'Elia would be remembered.
This thesis analyzes the Fascist government's control over Italian society, religion, and …
Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Segmented Flow In Microfluidic Chips, Katrina Jolene Donovan
Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Segmented Flow In Microfluidic Chips, Katrina Jolene Donovan
Master's Theses
Microfluidics is a rapidly growing topic of interest for scientists, engineers, and medical researchers. The micrometer length scale constrains flow to a laminar behavior, allowing for a more predictable system. High-throughput experimentation is possible with laminar multiphase flow, specifically microdroplets. Manipulating microdroplets by generating, splitting, separating, and fusing provides a versatile environment for analysis in a variety of biological and chemical systems.
The process of design, fabrication, and testing of microfluidic systems is an iterative and tedious procedure. The purpose of this research was to utilize computational fluid dynamics software to expedite the fabrication and design process by simulating time-dependent …
Utilization Of Crowdsourced Maps In Catastrophic Disasters, Makiko Hong
Utilization Of Crowdsourced Maps In Catastrophic Disasters, Makiko Hong
Master's Theses
Crowdsourced data, the collective messages from citizens through social media like Twitter® or Facebook®, have been increasingly recognized as a vital information source in a catastrophic disaster. Because there is often insufficient emergency personnel to gather situational information during a big disaster, the crowdsourced data can offer a supplemental means for data collection or dissemination immediately after the disaster. In addition, crowdsourced maps can empower citizens with their involvement.
In the Haiti earthquake of 2010, crowdsourced data was first used to create a web map application to aid the humanitarian effort. With some success in Haiti, these crowdsourced maps have …
Effects Of Temperature On Sexual Competition In Kelps: Implications For Range Shifts In Foundation Species, Alexis Cynthia Howard
Effects Of Temperature On Sexual Competition In Kelps: Implications For Range Shifts In Foundation Species, Alexis Cynthia Howard
Master's Theses
Kelp populations inhabit some of the most dynamic environments on the planet and often exist close to the limits of their temperature tolerances. Temperature cues reproductive processes in many kelps and fluctuating temperatures can affect kelp recruitment and population persistence. Some kelps compete sexually through their microscopic life history stages by releasing a pheromone that triggers the premature release of spermatozoids of neighboring species, leading to recruitment failure. It is unknown, however, whether changing temperature modifies competitive hierarchies among kelp species. To address this issue, I investigated how temperature affects sexual competition between microscopic stages of three co-existing and possibly …

This thesis explores the transformative effects of immigration from the 1960s through the 2010s among women from Taiwan living in the County of Santa Clara. The study focused on three substantive areas: (1) early life experiences and factors leading to immigration; (2) shifts in social identities after leaving Taiwan (e.g., political, national, and ethnic self-concepts in various contexts); and (3) practices of child-rearing. Several methodological tools were employed during the data collection phase of the research process, including interviews, surveys, and participant observations. The findings of this study suggested a dynamic process of change in which informants adapted to, were …
Adaptive Filtering For Heart Rate Signals, Samira Jaafari
Adaptive Filtering For Heart Rate Signals, Samira Jaafari
Master's Theses
This work focused on the effects of suppressing the motion artifact of wrist photoplethysmographic heart rate signals. Monitoring of the heart can offer important insight with regard to health and wellness. The objective of the experiment conducted here was to recover the distorted signal resulting from body movement while measuring the heart rate signal non-invasively from the wrist.
The class of filters, known as adaptive filters, that can extract meaningful information from the distorted signal, used predetermined initial conditions to equalize the signal distortion due to motion. These filters do not require prior knowledge about the system.
Adaptive filters of …
Prediction Of Residual Stress And Distortion From Residual Stress In Heat Treated And Machined Aluminum Parts, Robert Michael Jones
Prediction Of Residual Stress And Distortion From Residual Stress In Heat Treated And Machined Aluminum Parts, Robert Michael Jones
Master's Theses
Parts machined from relatively large thickness cross sections can experience significant deformations from high residual stresses that develop in the part during the heat treatment used to form the aluminum alloy. Uphill quenching is a process that can create a part with low residual stress and stable dimensions when the process is controlled properly. The uphill quenching process involves a solution heat treat, quench, cool to liquid nitrogen, steam blast, and then age to final temper.
In this thesis two parts were modeled using ANSYS. The first part underwent the uphill quench process in the rough machined state. The second …
Hittingtime And Pagerank, Shanthi Kannan
Hittingtime And Pagerank, Shanthi Kannan
Master's Theses
In this thesis, we study convergence of finite state, discrete, and time homogeneous Markov chains to a stationary distribution. Expressing the probability of transitioning between states as a matrix allows us to look at the conditions that make the matrix primitive. Using the Perron-Frobenius theorem we find the stationary distribution of a Markov chain to be the left Perron vector of the probability transition matrix.
We study a special type of Markov chain &mdash random walks on connected graphs. Using the concept of fundamental matrix and the method of spectral decomposition, we derive a formula
that calculates expected hitting times …

Delay Flip-Flop (Dff) Metastability Impact On Clock And Data Recovery (Cdr) And Phase-Locked Loop (Pll) Circuits, Alfred Sargezisardrud
Delay Flip-Flop (Dff) Metastability Impact On Clock And Data Recovery (Cdr) And Phase-Locked Loop (Pll) Circuits, Alfred Sargezisardrud
Master's Theses
Modeling delay flip-flops for binary (e.g., Alexander) phase detectors requires paying close attention to three important timing parameters: setup time, hold time, and clock edge-to-output (or briefly C2Q time). These parameters have a critical role in determining the status of the system on the circuit level. This study provided a guideline for designing an optimum DFF for an Alexander phase detector in a clock and data recovery circuit. Furthermore, it indicated DFF timing requirements for a high-speed phase detector in a clock and data recovery circuit. The CDR was also modeled by Verilog-A, and the results were compared with Simulink …
Testing The Unfolding Theory Of Turnover: Development Of An Exit Survey, Rachael Tellez
Testing The Unfolding Theory Of Turnover: Development Of An Exit Survey, Rachael Tellez
Master's Theses
Understanding turnover has always been a concern for organizations. The costs of turnover to an organization are both direct and indirect, through financial and personnel consequences. By understanding why employees leave, organizations can create more effective retention strategies in hopes of keeping top talent. One theory of turnover, The Unfolding Theory, proposes that employees follow one of five cognitive pathways when deciding to leave an organization. Previous studies evaluating this theory have both methodological and administrative flaws, such as conducting interviews after employees leave the organization. The present study examined the Unfolding Theory by creating an exit survey based on …

The effects of selective-harvest on forest composition and structure in the southern range of the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forest have not been well documented. This case study was focused on the Byrne-Milliron Forest located in Santa Cruz County, where selective-harvest is currently the primary method of timber extraction. The purpose of this research was to determine how forest structure and composition changed in relation to time since the last harvest re-entry, the percentage cut per hectare and number of harvest re-entries. The study design consisted of 100 plots located within the Byrne-Milliron Forest, spanning over five harvest …
Using Vegetation To Reduce Nitrogen Runoff In California Caneberries, Rebecca Riesenfeld
Using Vegetation To Reduce Nitrogen Runoff In California Caneberries, Rebecca Riesenfeld
Master's Theses
With a 700% rise in global fertilizer use in the last 50 years, agricultural lands are a significant source of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Record high levels of nitrate-contaminated runoff from agricultural sources in California's Central Coast are affecting drinking water supplies in the Pajaro Valley and increasingly threatening the ecological health of the Monterey Bay. Bands of vegetation strategically planted to control runoff and soil erosion, or vegetative filter strips (VFS), are used in urban landscapes and at some farm peripheries. On-farm vegetative diversity has been promoted for its contribution to biodiversity and pest control. …
Covert Visual Spatial Attention: Effects Of Voluntary And Involuntary Attention On Channel Enhancement And Channel Selection, Rocio Luna
Master's Theses
The ability to fixate ones eyes on one object while attending to another object is known as covert visual attention. The present study investigated the effects of covert visual attention on reaction time (RT) and accuracy while manipulating cue types (i.e., informative and non-informative) and validity (i.e., valid and invalid) in two experiments. The results of the RT experiment revealed a main effect of validity and an interaction between cue types and cue validity. However, there was no main effect of attention type. The results of the Accuracy experiment were very similar; there was a main effect of validity but …
A Promiscuous Wallflower: The Rare Zayante Sandhills Endemic Erysimum Teretifolium (Brassicaceae) Benefits From Outcrossing, Miranda Kathleen Melen
A Promiscuous Wallflower: The Rare Zayante Sandhills Endemic Erysimum Teretifolium (Brassicaceae) Benefits From Outcrossing, Miranda Kathleen Melen
Master's Theses
The Zayante sandhills ecosystem of Santa Cruz County, California, contains a rich mosaic of plants and animals adapted to unusual soils and microclimates. In this environment, local adaptation of populations is expected to lead to greater endemism and outbreeding depression. Anthropogenic fragmentation has further isolated populations, however, which paradoxically could result in inbreeding depression. One of these plants, Erysimum teretifolium (Ben Lomond wallflower) is an endangered endemic herb in the Brassicaceae family. This study assessed genetic mixing across remnant patches of E. teretifolium in order to estimate the effects of fragmentation and the reliance on pollinators. A captive breeding colony …

Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller
Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller
Master's Theses
Smartphones now account for the majority of all cell phones in use today [23]. Ubiquitous Internet access is a valuable feature offered by these devices and the vast majority of smartphone applications make use of the Internet in one way or another. However, the bandwidth offered by these cellular networks is often much lower than we typically experience on our standard home networks, leading to a less-than-optimal user experience. This makes it very challenging and frustrating to access certain types of web content such as video streaming, large file downloads, loading large webpages, etc.
Given that most modern smartphones are …
