Comparing Taxi Clearance Input Layouts For Advancements In Flight Deck Automation For Surface Operations, Lara W.S. Cheng
Comparing Taxi Clearance Input Layouts For Advancements In Flight Deck Automation For Surface Operations, Lara W.S. Cheng
Master's Theses
Airport moving maps (AMMs) have been shown to decrease navigation errors, increase taxiing speed, and reduce workload when they depict airport layout, current aircraft position, and the cleared taxi route. However, current technologies are limited in their ability to depict the cleared taxi route due to the unavailability of datacomm or other means of electronically transmitting clearances from ATC to the flight deck. This study examined methods by which pilots can input ATC-issued taxi clearances to support taxi route depictions on the AMM. Sixteen general aviation (GA) pilots used a touchscreen monitor to input taxi clearances using two input layouts, …
Location Gathering: An Evaluation Of Smartphone-Based Geographic Mobile Field Data Collection Hardware And Applications, Joel Clark
Master's Theses
Mobile field spatial data collection is the act of gathering attribute data, including spatial position, about features in a study area. A common method of field data collection is to use a handheld computing device attached to a global navigation satellite system in which attribute data are directly inputted into a database table. The market for mobile data collection systems was formerly dominated by bulky positioning systems and highly specialized software. However, recent years have seen the emergence and widespread adoption of highly customizable and user-friendly mobile smartphones and tablets. In this research, smartphone devices and smartphone data collection applications …
Seeing Success: Biographies Of Low-Income Students, Julia M. Morrice
Seeing Success: Biographies Of Low-Income Students, Julia M. Morrice
Master's Theses
The purpose of this narrative ethnographic study was to explore the success stories and lived experiences of six low-income students, utilizing an asset-based approach and attention to cultural wealth. Low-income students are less likely to attend college, and those that do are less likely to complete a degree. There is presently a lack of asset-based research that explores the successes of low-income students. A semi-structured interview protocol yielded biographical narratives of low-income students, which included discussions about identity and provided insight into the cultural wealth possessed by low-income students. In an effort to better understand the use of visual methodologies …

Trajectories Of Air Parcel Motions In Mars' Atmosphere Computed Using Hysplit, David Bruggeman
Master's Theses
An analysis of the advection of air parcels in the Martian atmosphere during the 2001 global dust storm through the use of three-dimensional trajectories is presented. The Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, well-known for trajectory, dispersion, and deposition modeling, and originally developed for Earth was modified for Mars to provide forward and backward trajectories. The custom HYSPLIT for Mars uses meteorological input generated by the NASA Ames Mars General Circulation Model (MGCM). The 2001 global dust storm was the earliest on record (Ls ~ 180°) and originated from local dust storms around the Hellas basin as the …

Seasonal Road Layout Design In Mountainous Terrain Using Gis With The Side Hill And Least Cost Path Methods, Emil Harold Brundage
Seasonal Road Layout Design In Mountainous Terrain Using Gis With The Side Hill And Least Cost Path Methods, Emil Harold Brundage
Master's Theses
Seasonal road design in mountainous terrain consists of four main phases: route selection, field investigation, surveying, and analysis. The first phase, route selection, consists of two parts: selecting control points at strategic locations, and then determining potential routes between those points. Two geographic information system (GIS) geoprocessing automations were developed to aid a road planner in determining routes between control points. Both automations utilized Environmental Systems Research Institute’s (ESRI) ArcGIS software package. The first method developed was the least cost path method, which makes use of ArcGIS’s cost path tool to find a route between points following a gradual slope. …

Master's Theses
The highly elongate Seven-Fingered-Jack intrusive complex (SFJIC) of the North Cascades, Washington provides an excellent opportunity to study the construction, geochemistry, and structure of a well-exposed mid-crustal pluton. The interior ~92 Ma Main Body tonalite has markedly heterogeneous and mafic domains that may represent interactions between multiple batches of melt. The ~78 Ma marginal Kelly Mountain suite includes a mafic complex containing abundant hornblendite, diorites of variable heterogeneity, and tonalite. Field mapping and structural, petrographic, and geochemical analyses are interpreted to indicate that this intrusive complex was built incrementally by many batches of melt. The dominantly NW-striking and NE-dipping magmatic …
Utilization Of Differential Thrust For Lateral/Directional Stability Of A Commercial Aircraft With A Damaged Vertical Stabilizer, Long Lu
Master's Theses
This thesis investigates the utilization of differential thrust to help a
commercial aircraft with a damaged vertical stabilizer regain its lateral/directional
stability. In the event of an aircraft losing its vertical stabilizer, the consequential
loss of the lateral/directional stability is likely to cause a fatal crash. In this thesis,
the damaged aircraft model is constructed, and the lateral/directional dynamic
stability and frequency domain analyses are conducted. The propulsion dynamics of
the aircraft are modeled as a system of differential equations with engine time
constant and time delay terms to study the engine response time with respect to a
differential thrust …
Assessing Lesbian Gay Bisexual Resistance In Core Team Sports, Kevin Edward Lynch
Assessing Lesbian Gay Bisexual Resistance In Core Team Sports, Kevin Edward Lynch
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine how sport and lesbian-gay-bisexual resistance intersect with economy, media, religion, politics, education, and race and whether those institutions reinforce the hegemonic masculinity gender construction embedded in sport. Through a review of literature, I explore whether the aforementioned institutions are incorporating sociologist Eric Anderson’s inclusive masculinity or whether they are stuck in the hegemonic form mainly in the core team sport of basketball, baseball, football and hockey. Also, I investigate if Allport’s contact hypothesis has played any role in the movement from hegemonic masculinity to inclusive masculinity. Religion, education, and economy all seem …

Efficient Message Propagation In Dense Linear Ad-Hoc Networks, Shiva Moballegh
Master's Theses
In this thesis, the dynamics of the cooperative broadcast in high density 1-dimensional (1D) networks is studied using multiple levels of relays. The benefits of the cooperative broadcast in terms of transmission range and power efficiency are evaluated by approximating the network as a continuum of nodes. Two transmission protocols are studied, the single-shot transmission and the continuous source transmission. In the single-shot transmission, the source node transmits a single message, whereas in the continuous source transmission, it transmits independent messages periodically adding signal interference into the picture. For each case, the analytical expressions for successful broadcasting are presented as …

Walt Kuhn, an American artist born in New York, is often overlooked for his contribution to Modern American Art. Kuhn is typically recognized for his organizational and curatorial role in the 1913 Armory Show, but he was also internationally known in his time for his paintings of show people and as a creative director for several vaudeville and circus acts over his lifetime. During his career as a creative director, Kuhn’s artwork evolved from superficial renderings of theatre scenes to psychologically intense tronies of performers. Kuhn and other American artists, including the Ashcan group and Edward Hopper, examined the relationship …
"They Going To Throw You In Jackson Where You Belong": Depictions Of Mental Disability In The Works Of William Faulkner And Flannery O'Connor, Marie Elizabeth Lawson
"They Going To Throw You In Jackson Where You Belong": Depictions Of Mental Disability In The Works Of William Faulkner And Flannery O'Connor, Marie Elizabeth Lawson
Master's Theses
Mentally disabled characters in the works of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor are often subjected to mistreatment, neglect, and violence at the hands of their families and communities. In William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury (1929) and The Hamlet (1940) and Flannery O’Connor’s “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” (1955) and The Violent Bear it Away (1960), characters with mental disabilities are depicted in such a way as to evoke sympathy for the characters without the narratives overtly calling for sympathy. This is achieved through the juxtaposition of positive narrative portrayals with negative treatment by the characters’ …
Epigenetic Regulation Of Nuclear Hormone Receptor Dax-1, Michael B. Heskett
Epigenetic Regulation Of Nuclear Hormone Receptor Dax-1, Michael B. Heskett
Master's Theses
DAX-1 (NR0B1) is an orphan nuclear receptor that plays a key role in the development and maintenance of steroidogenic tissue in mammals. Dax-1 is also expressed in mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells and is required to maintain pluripotency. Duplication of the X-chromosome in the region containing the NR0B1 gene results in sex reversal, and mutations in NR0B1 cause adrenal hypoplasia congenita. DAX-1 has been observed to act as a corepressor of other nuclear receptors including androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor (ER), and steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1). In addition to pluripotent ES cells, DAX-1 is primarily expressed in select tissues of …

The Final Whistle: An In-Depth Analysis Of How Elite Transfer Student-Athletes Adapt To Life After Intercollegiate Sport, Julianne Hubbard
The Final Whistle: An In-Depth Analysis Of How Elite Transfer Student-Athletes Adapt To Life After Intercollegiate Sport, Julianne Hubbard
Master's Theses
Since elite intercollegiate student-athletes often elect to transfer institutions for reasons of athletic dissatisfaction, it was hypothesized that members of this population have strong, exclusive athletic identities, making the transition out of sport extremely troublesome. The following research study utilized a mixed-methods approach to examine the athletic retirement experiences of elite transfer intercollegiate student-athletes. Nine former NCAA Division I women’s soccer players provided quantitative and qualitative information regarding athletic identity, transferring, and retirement from elite sport. Using the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) developed by Brewer et al. (1993), ‘at-risk’ individuals likely to have experienced negative transitions from sport were …
Finite Element Formulation Of Phase Field Fracture, Alexandros N. Mathioudakis
Finite Element Formulation Of Phase Field Fracture, Alexandros N. Mathioudakis
Master's Theses
Numerically predicting crack growth is difficult due to the infinite stresses at the crack tip as well as the extreme change in material properties which will introduce numerical instabilities. This project encompasses the development of a Finite Element Code that implements the phase field physics theory developed in order to analyze crack propagation. Under this theory a new state variable is introduced which describes the phase as failed or virgin material. The phase is modeled as diffusion through the material and is driven by specified equations, and is especially useful in the prediction of high temperature creep rupture.

Use Of Thermally Grown Oxide Stress Measurements To Predict Remaining Life Of Thermal Barrier Coatings Under Realistic Turbine Engine Conditions, Nirav V. Patel
Master's Theses
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are important in increasing performance and extending the life of gas turbine engine hot parts. Over the course of thermal cycling and engine operation, the coatings eventually spall off exposing superalloys to extreme temperatures. In this thesis, two aspects involving thermal barrier coating life prediction were explored. The first was by making use of stress measurements in the thermally grown oxide (TGO) to predict lives of samples subjected to non-constant furnace testing. This work used data from an earlier thesis and for the first time developed specific strategies to predict remaining life in the face of …
Sequential Logic Circuits Using Spatial Wavefunction Switched (Sws) Fets, Neeraja Jagadeesan
Sequential Logic Circuits Using Spatial Wavefunction Switched (Sws) Fets, Neeraja Jagadeesan
Master's Theses
In this thesis, sequential logic circuits have been implemented using spatial wavefunction-switched field-effect transistor (SWSFET). The spatial wavefunction-switched field-effect transistor (SWSFET) is one of the promising quantum well devices that transfers electrons from one quantum well channel to the other channel based on the applied gate voltage. This eliminates the use of more transistors as we have coupled channels in the same device operating at different threshold voltages. This feature can be exploited in many digital integrated circuits thus reducing the count of transistors which translates to less die area. The simulations of basic sequential circuits like SR latch, D …
