Understanding Academic Achievement Among Low-Income, Urban, Black Adolescents: The Role Of Father Involvement, Patrick Henry
Master's Theses
Although the Black-White test score gap has improved over time, it still persists. Furthermore, this academic risk for Black youth is compounded by the disproportionate representation of Blacks among low-income families in the U.S. Thus, the present study aims to shed light on factors related to greater academic success among adolescents in low-income, urban, Black families. Overall, this study addresses the following question. How does the presence of a biological father and positive father involvement impact the academic achievement of their adolescent children? Data from the Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study (TCS) were analyzed in order to address …
Waiting On You: A Study Of Tipped Minimum Wages' Effects On Job Tenure Among White Restaurant Servers, John Henry Sienkiewicz
Waiting On You: A Study Of Tipped Minimum Wages' Effects On Job Tenure Among White Restaurant Servers, John Henry Sienkiewicz
Master's Theses
Many restaurant servers do not make adequate earnings under the current tipped wage system in America. On top of this, restaurant servers largely lack benefits such as paid sick days and health insurance. Unsurprisingly, those in the food and accommodation industry exhibit among the highest rates of voluntary turnover. As research has shown that raising the non-tipped, standard minimum wage decreases employee turnover and increases overall job tenure, it follows that increases in the tipped minimum wage may increase job tenure for restaurant servers. Using survey data from nearly 1700 white restaurant servers from 2006, this multiple regression analysis shows …
Land-Use And Algal Species Influence Bacterial Community Composition And Activity In Streams, Miguel Rojas
Land-Use And Algal Species Influence Bacterial Community Composition And Activity In Streams, Miguel Rojas
Master's Theses
Microbial biofilms can be found on virtually all submerged surfaces in aquatic habitats, including rivers and streams. Biofilms are complex, taxonomically diverse communities of microorganisms (including algae and bacteria) that colonize solid surfaces and support a wide range of metabolic activities. Biofilms are critical components of river and stream ecosystems because they are key drivers of nutrient cycling processes (including nitrogen cycling) and because they serve as an important food source for higher trophic levels. Biofilms in urban streams are subject to a number of anthropogenic stressors, but research on the ecology of urban biofilms and their response to stressors …

Adams As Potential Regulators Of Stem Cell Quiescence In The Olfactory Epithelium, Elaine Elizabeth Orendorff
Master's Theses
I demonstrate that a member of the protein family A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease (ADAM), ADAM23, is expressed in the olfactory epithelium (OE) and may inhibit neural progenitor cell (NPC) proliferation. I generated a list of ten gene candidates and selected ADAM23 for further study, based on its conserved protein structure and accumulating evidence for its role in cell cycle progression of proliferative cells. I next determined ADAM23 protein localization using immunohistochemistry and measured both mRNA and protein expression post-lesion with RT-qPCR and Western blot. ADAM23 is expressed in multiple cell types of the OE, including glial Sustentacular (Sus) cells and …

Predicting Suitable Habitat Decline Of Midwestern United States Amphibians And Quantifying The Consequence Of Declines Using Pond-Breeding Salamanders, Brock Struecker
Master's Theses
With current declines of vertebrate taxa meeting or exceeding those of historic mass extinction events, there is a growing need to investigate the main drivers of declines. Amphibians are perhaps at greatest risk of global climate change and land-use changes than most other vertebrate classes and also have significant roles in ecosystem processes – combined, this creates a cause for concern. I designed a study that would investigate the effects of current and predicted climate change and land-use changes on amphibians using species distribution models and a field study to identify the potential consequences of amphibian species declines by investigating …

Global Human Trafficking: New Insights On An Old Crime, Joanna Surma
Master's Theses
Thousands of men, women, and children become victims to human trafficking each year. Almost every country in the world is affected by this heinous crime. Human trafficking exists in many different forms including sexual exploitation, slavery, forced labor or servitude, the removal of organs, child soldiers, etc. Despite the age-old practice being traced back to the 13th century, it continues to exist and even grow today. Unfortunately, not much research is available on the topic. Combating human trafficking is a growing priority for many governments; however, certain obstacles to data collection and analysis continue to exist. Recently, a new study …
Role Of Pkc Delta In Uv Radiation Dna Damage Repair, Gargi Patil
Role Of Pkc Delta In Uv Radiation Dna Damage Repair, Gargi Patil
Master's Theses
DNA damage caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV), such as cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD), is repaired by the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. When NER is defective, DNA damage is not repaired, leading to mutations and skin cancer. After DNA damage, the cell cycle is halted at various checkpoints to allow time for repair of the damage and maintain genomic integrity, however little is known about the coordination between NER DNA damage repair and cell cycle halting at checkpoints after DNA damage. Protein kinase C δ (PKCδ) plays major role in apoptosis and maintains the G2/M checkpoint in response to UV …

Prevalence And Diversity Of The Haemosporidian Blood Parasite Leucocytozoon In Sub-Saharan African Birds, Heather Skeen
Master's Theses
Our knowledge of avian Haemosporidian parasites has increased dramatically with the advent and increased used of molecular technologies. Yet Leucocytozoon, a common avian parasite, remains relatively understudied. Haemosporidian parasite diversity and prevalence has been shown to be dependent on several factors, including host family and habitat, on a microecological scale. In this study I screened 3,375 birds from sub-Saharan Africa for the presence of Leucocytozoon and demonstrate that the patterns of prevalence and diversity continue at a macroecological scale. Using molecular data, I found that the prevalence of Leucocytozoon varied between sampling areas from 3.9% to 62.64% and the diversity …
Lactobacillus Crispatus Produces A Bacteridical Molecule That Kills Uropathogenic E. Coli, Katherine Diebel
Lactobacillus Crispatus Produces A Bacteridical Molecule That Kills Uropathogenic E. Coli, Katherine Diebel
Master's Theses
As many as 1 in 2 women will have at least one urinary tract infection (UTI) in their lifetime. UTIs can cause complications in pregnancy and decrease quality of life, and their treatment and prevention are expensive. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is the primary cause of UTI. The probiotic and bactericidal capacities of gut and vaginal Lactobacillus isolates have been studied, but the same attention has not been paid to urinary strains. These urinary isolates of L. crispatus appear to have a greater killing capacity against UPEC and this bactericidal activity does not depend on the cells themselves, consistent with …

The purpose of the current study was to cross-sectionally and longitudinally examine the relationship between adolescent perceptions of their neighborhood and time spent in “risky contexts.” Specifically, the relationship between adolescent perceptions of neighborhood danger and the percent of time spent with older peers or outside was examined. In addition, this study analyzed the relationship between youth perceptions of neighborhood support and the percent time they spent with older peers or outside. All these relationships were also explored in regard to the moderating impact of gender and parental monitoring. An Experience Time Sampling technique (ESM) was utilized to determine how …
A Study Of Immune-Regulation Of Microbiota Supernatant On Macrophage Function, An N. Nguyen
A Study Of Immune-Regulation Of Microbiota Supernatant On Macrophage Function, An N. Nguyen
Master's Theses
The diverse human microbial ecosystem colonizes many different body sites. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract, especially, is a major region that that harbors a complex microbial community composed of trillions of commensal bacteria. Interactions between the commensal bacteria and the host immune system begin at birth and continue through the human lifespan. In the gut, commensal bacteria help the host to ensure the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis as well as the mucosal barrier structure through host stimulation of mucus and antimicrobial molecules. The secretion of these host factors functions to inhibit pathogenic invasion and maintain the population of commensal bacteria. The …
Characterization Of Il-22-Producing Cells In The Human Thymus And The Mechanism By Which Il-22 Expression Is Modulated By Thymic Epithelial Cells., Nadine N. Morgan
Characterization Of Il-22-Producing Cells In The Human Thymus And The Mechanism By Which Il-22 Expression Is Modulated By Thymic Epithelial Cells., Nadine N. Morgan
Master's Theses
Thymic epithelial cells (TECs) are indispensable for T cell development and maturation. Therefore, damages to the thymic epithelial cells are detrimental to thymic function and immune response. In young healthy individuals, TECs have a high regenerative potential and are capable of renewal from serious damage; however, the molecular mechanism of this recovery is unclear. A recent study has shown that IL-22-producing ILCs are present in the mouse thymus and can regenerate thymic epithelial cells following radiation induced injuries. However, it is unknown whether IL-22-producing cells are also found in the human thymus. Thus, the goal of this study is to …

Through a qualitative case study this study focuses on 11 Southside College Prep High School …
Defining The Role Of A Putative Peptidase In Staphylococcus Aureus Quorum Sensing And Pathogenesis, Chelsea Rose White
Defining The Role Of A Putative Peptidase In Staphylococcus Aureus Quorum Sensing And Pathogenesis, Chelsea Rose White
Master's Theses
The pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus encounters a variety of immune cells that restrict bacterial growth and dissemination during infection. However, S. aureus counters these immune cell functions by producing myriad virulence factors that facilitate evasion of host defenses. Therefore, it is important to understand S. aureus-immune cell interactions and the virulence factors that perturb normal immune function to promote pathogenesis. In a genetic screen designed to identify S. aureus secreted factors that modulate macrophage activity our lab identified a transposon insertion mutant in the gene SAUSA300_1984, encoding a putative membrane spanning peptidase. To investigate the role of 1984 in pathogenesis, …
Assessing The Success Of Outreach At Preventing The Movement Of Aquatic Invasive Species In Illinois, Ellen Anne Cole
Assessing The Success Of Outreach At Preventing The Movement Of Aquatic Invasive Species In Illinois, Ellen Anne Cole
Master's Theses
Overland transport of recreational boats is the major vector of dispersal for aquatic invasive species among North American waterbodies. These species have large economic and ecosystem impacts, and understanding their movement is essential to understanding the biodiversity and functioning of aquatic ecosystems across the continent. I surveyed Illinois boaters to determine patterns of recreational boat movement and the consistency with which boaters perform actions to prevent the spread of invasive species. Although most boaters perform these actions, a large minority do not and the network for invasive species spread on recreational boats still connects most waterbodies. Next, I interviewed managers …

The Role Of C-Abl Kinase In Hcc Development, Lennox Chitsike
Master's Theses
Hepatocellular Carcinoma is the second most lethal cancer after pancreatic cancer. Unresectable HCC tumors carry a poor prognosis and few treatment options are available. The dismal prognosis is mainly due to limited therapy options and molecularly targeted therapy is deemed as solution. Here, we report a novel role of c-Abl in HCC development. We provide evidence of c-Abl activation in human HCC samples compared to normal liver. Using genetic and pharmacological tools, we show that c-Abl plays a vital role in HCC progression in vitro and in vivo. We have identified Axl as an effector in processes mediated by c-Abl. …

Master's Theses
Cellular Consequences Of Lysosomal Rupture Induced By Alpha Synuclein, Zachary Carpenter Green
Cellular Consequences Of Lysosomal Rupture Induced By Alpha Synuclein, Zachary Carpenter Green
Master's Theses
Misfolded, toxic forms of amyloid alpha synuclein (α-syn) have been implicated in Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathology and have been shown to spread throughout the brain in a prion-like manner, explaining the progressive loss of neurons in PD. The mechanisms of spread and cell death are unknown, however, evidence from previous studies suggests that neurons may undergo apoptosis due to the uptake of exogenous α-syn aggregate through the endocytic pathway and subsequent lysosomal rupture.
This study aimed to corroborate previous evidence of α-syn induced lysosomal rupture and investigate the cellular repercussions of rupture with respect to cell death and α-syn transfer. …
Common Core For Social Justice?: Arendtian Critical Thinking And The Common Core State Standards, Chandler Bain Meyer
Common Core For Social Justice?: Arendtian Critical Thinking And The Common Core State Standards, Chandler Bain Meyer
Master's Theses
Through Hannah Arendt’s inspection of Adolf Eichmann, her studies of Kant’s political philosophy, and Life of the Mind she examines what it means to think critically and deconstructs the taken-for-granted action of thought. This paper is premised by the same guiding question as Arendt asks herself: Could thinking be a condition that makes people abstain from committing injustice or be conditioned against it? Arendt, clearly building on Kant, certainly thought it is probable; suggesting that Eichmann was not purely wicked or laced with stupidity, but the “macabre comedy” he landed a starring role in was a result of simple thoughtlessness. …
Use Of Youth Program Quality Assessment (Ypqa) As A Method Of Process Evaluation: Maximizing Limited Resources Of Nonprofit Organizations, Young Im
Master's Theses
Past literature shows the progression of different phases of evaluation practice in nonprofit organizations. Pressure of outcome or impact evaluation started the beginning of the 21st century. The attempt to manage the weight of conducting outcome evaluation has raised many complications, inhibiting the nonprofit organization’s ability to learn and understand the proper role of evaluation and what it can provide to assist in improving programs. It, therefore, has led to a gap in which nonprofits miss what happens during implementation, a crucial part of process evaluation. Among nonprofit organizations in the areas of youth development and after-school programs, various types …
Estrogen Regulation Of Mir-181a Stability In Neurons, Chun Kim
Estrogen Regulation Of Mir-181a Stability In Neurons, Chun Kim
Master's Theses
Estrogens are an important class of steroid hormones involved in many cellular signaling processes. Levels of estrogens fluctuate across the lifespan suggesting that they target intracellular mediators, such as microRNAs, to fine-tune homeostatic cellular processes. Previous work in our lab demonstrated that 17β-estradiol (E2), the predominant circulating estrogen, stabilized miR-181a in a neuronal cell line derived from rat hypothalamus. These results lead to the hypothesis that E2 regulated miR-181a stability by altering the pool of endogenous RNA and by recruiting PNRC2 away from the miRNA degradation machinery. By utilizing miRNA degradation assays and immunostaining techniques, it was determined that the …

Chronic Toxicity Of Binary Metal Mixtures Of Cadmium-Zinc And Cadmium-Nickelon Daphnia Magna, Edgar Ramiro Perez
Chronic Toxicity Of Binary Metal Mixtures Of Cadmium-Zinc And Cadmium-Nickelon Daphnia Magna, Edgar Ramiro Perez
Master's Theses
This study characterizes binary-metal mixture effects of cadmium (Cd2+) + zinc (Zn2+) and Cd2+ + nickel (Ni2+) on Daphnia magna. Although acute studies have shown protective Ni2+ (Traudt et al. 2016) and Zn2+ effects (Meyer et al. 2015) against Cd2+ toxicity, no study has fully characterized a protective effect on D. magna at several endpoints (survival, reproduction, growth, and accumulation) on a chronic study. In this study, the titration design was selected to characterize the 21 day (21-d) chronic effects of the binary-metal mixtures on survival, growth, reproduction, and metal accumulation in D. magna. Using this design, increasing concentrations of …
