Impact Of Prolonged Sitting On Cognitive Function: Implications For Cardio-Metabolic Risk, Sabina Miller
Impact Of Prolonged Sitting On Cognitive Function: Implications For Cardio-Metabolic Risk, Sabina Miller
Master's Theses
Purpose: To determine if prolonged sitting negatively impacts cognitive function, cerebral perfusion, and central cardiovascular hemodynamics; and secondly, to test whether weight or physical activity status alters this response. Methods: Participants (N=20, age=26±7; BMI=30±7 kg/m2; 7 female) were taken through 3 hrs of sitting followed by a 10-min walk (treadmill). Cognitive function was assessed during sitting (10, 60, 120, and 180 mins) and following the walk using a color/word Stroop test. Cerebral perfusion was measured via near infrared spectroscopy (total hemoglobin—tHb). Central cardiovascular hemodynamics and aortic stiffness (pulse wave velocity—PWV) were measured using the SphygmoCor XCEL device before, …
Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Correct Heading Skills To Youth Soccer Players, Laura Quintero
Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Correct Heading Skills To Youth Soccer Players, Laura Quintero
Master's Theses
Recently, concerns regarding sport-related concussions have increased within the research literature, the media, and popular culture. It is unknown to what degree purposefully striking the ball with one’s head (i.e. heading) contributes to concussions within youth soccer. There is currently limited research on an effective teaching method to improve heading technique. Due to the numerous applications of Behavioral Skills Training (BST) to teach a wide variety of behaviors, the purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of BST to teach correct heading techniques to youth soccer players. A task analysis was produced to score each header. Results …
Growth And Reproduction Of Atlantic Chub Mackerel (Scomber Colias) In The Northwest Atlantic, Taylor T. Daley
Growth And Reproduction Of Atlantic Chub Mackerel (Scomber Colias) In The Northwest Atlantic, Taylor T. Daley
Master's Theses
Recent efforts to manage Atlantic Chub Mackerel (Scomber colias) in the northwest Atlantic have necessitated the description of the stocks life-history characteristics. The purpose of this study was to address the absence of regional information on growth and reproduction. Growth models were fit in a Bayesian framework. The length-at-age relationship was described using four non-linear candidate growth models, which were fit to total length (TL, cm) and age estimates (y). Age estimates were derived from whole otoliths for adults (n = 422) and ages of one month were assigned to larval fish (n = 60). The …

T.S. Eliot, "The Waste Land", And Yoga Philosophy, Jessica Cloud
T.S. Eliot, "The Waste Land", And Yoga Philosophy, Jessica Cloud
Master's Theses
While pursuing his graduate studies at Harvard, T.S. Eliot put a year into deep study of the Yoga Sutras with renowned scholar James Haughton Woods. Yoga, defined in the Sutras as the practice of stopping “the fluctuations of the mind-stuff” (Patañjali 8), provides the possibility of hope and equanimity in Eliot’s poem The Waste Land (1922), which depicts a world seemingly devoid of meaning. Not only can the influence of the Yoga Sutras be seen in the poetic form, style, and voice of The Waste Land and in the explanatory notes to the poem provided by Eliot, but classical yoga …
"There Was Something Grotesque": The Application And Limits Of Respectability In The Daughters Of Bilitis, Elizabeth Diane Greer
"There Was Something Grotesque": The Application And Limits Of Respectability In The Daughters Of Bilitis, Elizabeth Diane Greer
Master's Theses
Living in both the “deviant” and “normal” worlds, the leadership of The Daughters of Bilitis generally adhered to a respectable and assimilationist public persona as evidenced through political activities and the publication of their periodical The Ladder. Due to this juxtaposition, the largely middle-class, white membership exhibited socially conservative views in order to make long-term social change, leading to an inherent contradiction between maintaining their middle-class identity and public respectability. Seen from the organization’s founding in 1955 until its collapse in 1970, these contradictions and the focus on respectability politics adds to the existing scholarship on the DOB.

Vocalizations Of North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis) In Two Human Care Populations, Sarah Walkley
Vocalizations Of North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis) In Two Human Care Populations, Sarah Walkley
Master's Theses
There is a dearth of information regarding the vocal repertoire of North American river otters (Lontra canadensis). This indicator species is cosmopolitan yet elusive, making recordings methodologically difficult in the wild. Therefore, this exploratory study uses video and audio recordings of two populations of North American river otters in human care to broaden the known vocal repertoire of river otters in various social contexts. The populations consist of a male-female pair at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center and a male-male pair at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. This study is the first to examine the vocalizations produced …
Regional Variation In Migratory Behavior And Reproductive Output Of The Gulf Of Mexico Blue Crab Spawning Stock, Adam Kemberling
Regional Variation In Migratory Behavior And Reproductive Output Of The Gulf Of Mexico Blue Crab Spawning Stock, Adam Kemberling
Master's Theses
The overarching goal of this research was to better understand the structure and boundaries of the blue crab stock(s) in the Gulf of Mexico, focusing on large-scale movements of spawning female crabs. Because spawning location is a primary determinant of larval transport pathways, understanding spawning locations and offshore movements of female blue crabs can inform stock identification and potentially clarify the somewhat conflicting population genetic information available for blue crabs. A large-scale mark-recapture study was conducted through the partnership of state/federal management agencies, the commercial fishing industry, recreational fisherman, tourists, and numerous academic institutions to shed light on the timing …
Revisiting Magee: A Mississippian Mound Center Site, Nicholas Glass
Revisiting Magee: A Mississippian Mound Center Site, Nicholas Glass
Master's Theses
Magee is a multi-mound center located in the Southern Yazoo Basin of the Lower Mississippi River Valley (LMV). Originally recorded by Phillip Phillips, James A. Ford, and James B. Griffin in 1941, the site has not been professionally investigated since then (Phillips, Ford, and Griffin: 1951). Based on their surface collection and presence of one large mound surrounded by smaller mounds, their interpretation of the site was that it served as a large ceremonial center for a short period of time, and was utilized primarily for religious purposes (Phillips et al. 2003 [1951]:325-327). Phillip Phillips (1970) dates the site within …
The Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relationship Between Trait Anger And Relational Aggression, Skylar Hicks
The Role Of Emotion Regulation In The Relationship Between Trait Anger And Relational Aggression, Skylar Hicks
Master's Theses
Relational aggression (RA) has been linked to a number of serious problems for all age ranges, especially in young children, adolescents, and emerging adults. Elevated trait anger appears to be positively related to both peer and romantic RA, and there is some evidence that difficulties with emotion regulation are positively associated with RA as well. The present study investigated the role of emotion regulation as a potential moderator of the relationship between trait anger and RA in a college student sample (N = 307) while taking general negative affect into account. As expected, trait anger was a positive predictor …
1300 Years Of Snowpack Change For The Sangre De Cristo Mountian Range, Michael Thornton
1300 Years Of Snowpack Change For The Sangre De Cristo Mountian Range, Michael Thornton
Master's Theses
New Mexico is heavily dependent on hydrologic inputs along high elevation sites where much of the cool-season precipitation accumulates as snowpack in the lower Southern Rocky Mountains. Snowpack runoff from the Sangre de Cristo (SDC) range provides critical headwater resources for the two major rivers that run through New Mexico and by extension the greater population. Yet, over the past four decades snowpack data from high and mid-elevation sites exhibit a linear trend of declining snowpack in conjunction with earlier seasonal melting. Due to the importance of these cool-season inputs for the region, a decline in montane runoff availability is …
Computational Validation Of Aerodynamic Paramenters On A Multi-Sided Cylinder, Christopher Ong
Computational Validation Of Aerodynamic Paramenters On A Multi-Sided Cylinder, Christopher Ong
Master's Theses
There are fundamental problems in fluid dynamics. One common problem is fluid flow around cylinder-shaped bodies which range from circular to multi-sided polygons. These basic geometric shapes are found in various applications. With the increased availability of computational power, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes an avenue for studying fluid flow around theses shapes. The fluid flow over cylindrical bodies is a widely studied problem used to validate the accuracy and reliability of CFD codes before working on more complex engineering problems. This validation is done by comparing selected flow parameters to experimental results to determine the accuracy …

Finding a way to link these two tools could allow systems engineers to reap the benefits of both.
This thesis investigates the background and design process involved with developing the code that can convert an output file generated in SysML, into a format specifically made for the Horizon …
Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams
Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams
Master's Theses
Facial recognition is a powerful tool for identifying people visually. Yet, when the end goal is more specific than merely identifying the person in a picture problems can arise. Speaker identification is one such task which expects more predictive power out of a facial recognition system than can be provided on its own. Speaker identification is the task of identifying who is speaking in video not simply who is present in the video. This extra requirement introduces numerous false positives into the facial recognition system largely due to one main scenario. The person speaking is not on camera. This paper …
Modeling Adversarial Insider Vehicles In Mix Zones, Nicholas Plewtong
Modeling Adversarial Insider Vehicles In Mix Zones, Nicholas Plewtong
Master's Theses
Security is a necessity when dealing with new forms of technology that may not have been analyzed from a security perspective. One of the latest growing technological advances are Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs). VANETs allow vehicles to communicate information to each other wirelessly which allows for an increase in safety and efficiency for vehicles. However, with this new type of computerized system comes the need to maintain security on top of it.
In order to try to protect location privacy of the vehicles in the system, vehicles change pseudonyms or identifiers at areas known as mix zones. This thesis implements …
Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation For Verification Of Cubesat Attitude Determination And Control Subsystem, Andrew Richard Sorensen
Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation For Verification Of Cubesat Attitude Determination And Control Subsystem, Andrew Richard Sorensen
Master's Theses
Since their creation in 1999, CubeSats have quickly erupted into a worldwide phenomenon. With missions growing in complexity, it is often required to keep the satellite in a certain orientation appropriate to that mission. To achieve this desired orientation, CubeSats must use an attitude determination and control subsystem, commonly known as an ADCS. Tasked with creating and maintaining an appropriate orientation for the satellite, the ADCS is a complex system, and often there are difficulties verifying the functionality of such algorithms.
This thesis investigates a hardware-in-the-loop simulation based off of PolySat's software architecture that allows for a higher granularity of …
An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch
An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch
Master's Theses
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has become essential to front-end web development for the specification of style. But despite its simple syntax and the theoretical advantages attained through the separation of style from content and behavior, CSS authoring today is regarded as a complex task. As a result, developers are increasingly turning to CSS preprocessor languages and web frameworks to aid in development. However, previous studies show that even highly popular websites which are known to be developed with web frameworks contain CSS code smells such as duplicated rules and hard-coded values. Such code smells have the potential to cause adverse …
The Impacts Of Sex And Myogenic Cell Transplantation On Collateral Capillary Arteriogenesis, Padon Mary Sivesind
The Impacts Of Sex And Myogenic Cell Transplantation On Collateral Capillary Arteriogenesis, Padon Mary Sivesind
Master's Theses
Current treatments for peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) have limited success, so there is a need to develop more effective treatments. Because patients with native collaterals have a better prognosis, promoting collateral arteriogenesis is a potential PAOD treatment. Additionally, female PAOD patients have a worse response to treatment and a worse prognosis compared to males, which could be due to impaired collateralization. Cell transplantation is a potential treatment option to promote collateral arteriogenesis. Bone marrow derived stem cells are the main cell type that has been investigated, but they have had limited clinical success. Delivering a stem cell type native …

Powder Bed Surface Quality And Particle Size Distribution For Metal Additive Manufacturing And Comparison With Discrete Element Model, Irene Yee
Master's Theses
Metal additive manufacturing (AM) can produce complex parts that were once considered impossible or too costly to fabricate using conventional machining techniques, making AM machines an exceptional tool for rapid prototyping, one-off parts, and labor-intensive geometries. Due to the growing popularity of this technology, especially in the defense and medical industries, more researchers are looking into the physics and mechanics behind the AM process. Many factors and parameters contribute to the overall quality of a part, one of them being the powder bed itself. So far, little investigation has been dedicated to the behavior of the powder in the powder …

Characterization Of Botrytis Cinerea Resistance To Fungicides In California Strawberry Production, Scott D. Cosseboom
Master's Theses
Gray mold of strawberry, caused by Botrytis cinerea, is a very destructive pre- and post-harvest fruit rot. Outside of California, fungicide resistance in B. cinerea has been reported to every site-specific chemical class labeled for use against gray mold. One objective of this study was to characterize the resistance of 888 isolates of B. cinerea from California strawberry fields to ten active ingredients. Isolates were collected from the same planting block in 47 fields during the early-season (0 to 8 fungicide applications) and late-season (16 to 26 fungicide applications) of 2016. Sensitivity of each isolate was determined using the …
Predicting The Vote Using Legislative Speech, Aditya Budhwar
Predicting The Vote Using Legislative Speech, Aditya Budhwar
Master's Theses
As most dedicated observers of voting bodies like the U.S. Supreme Court can attest, it is possible to guess vote outcomes based on statements made during deliberations or questioning by the voting members. In most forms of representative democracy, citizens can actively petition or lobby their representatives, and that often means understanding their intentions to vote for or against an issue of interest. In some U.S. state legislators, professional lobby groups and dedicated press members are highly informed and engaged, but the process is basically closed to ordinary citizens because they do not have enough background and familiarity with the …
Applying Neural Networks For Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, Alex Kost
Applying Neural Networks For Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, Alex Kost
Master's Theses
A proof-of-concept indirect tire-pressure monitoring system is developed using neural net- works to identify the tire pressure of a vehicle tire. A quarter-car model was developed with Matlab and Simulink to generate simulated accelerometer output data. Simulation data are used to train and evaluate a recurrent neural network with long short-term memory blocks (RNN-LSTM) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) developed in Python with Tensorflow. Bayesian Optimization via SigOpt was used to optimize training and model parameters. The predictive accuracy and training speed of the two models with various parameters are compared. Finally, future work and improvements are discussed.
Evaluating Recruitment Seasonality Of Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens) To Inform Fisheries Management And Conservation Policy, Leslie Christine Hart
Evaluating Recruitment Seasonality Of Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens) To Inform Fisheries Management And Conservation Policy, Leslie Christine Hart
Master's Theses
Recruitment, the addition of new individuals to a population, must be understood to make predictions about population growth of marine invertebrates. Red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) represent a former important commercial fishery in California, and until recently, supported a major recreational fishery. However, there have been statewide declines since the 1960s due to overfishing, disease, and climatic factors. Thus, understanding population dynamics to inform management and population restoration is critical. Recruitment dynamics of red abalone are poorly understood, with no prior knowledge of seasonal trends. To address this knowledge gap, I assessed monthly (July 2016-June 2017) and annual (2012-2016) …

Showing Programmers That They Already Know How To Write Well, Alanna Buss
Master's Theses
Being able to communicate effectively through writing is an important skill for computer scientists and software engineers. In addition to being able to write code, programmers need to write clearly and concisely for everything from comments in their code to documentation. Despite writing being essential to their future careers, many programming students from Cal Poly find writing to be unimportant and many of them believe that they are not capable of writing good papers. How can Cal Poly help these students?
This paper describes a pedagogy to help students improve their writing skills. It is based heavily on the belief …
