Mllt3 Regulates Expression Of Genes Critical To Liver Metabolic Homeostasis, Jonathan Richard Dixit Jan 2019

Mllt3 Regulates Expression Of Genes Critical To Liver Metabolic Homeostasis, Jonathan Richard Dixit

Master's Theses

Hepatic steatosis (fatty liver) is increasingly prevalent in the US, and is characterized by triglyceride accumulation within hepatocytes. This is a direct result of an imbalance between lipid import, export, de novo lipogenesis, and beta oxidation. Hepatic steatosis can also progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which is characterized by increased hepatocyte damage, inflammation, and fibrosis. Further progression can lead to liver failure or hepatocellular carcinoma, requiring liver transplant or causing death. Our lab recently created Mllt3 conditional whole body knockout mice. These mice developed hepatic steatosis and NASH following Mllt3 deletion. MLLT3 is a master gene regulator that is part …

El Cine De Honduras: El Neorrealismo, El Expresionismo Y La Transformacion Social En Los Filmes De Sami Kafati E Hispano Duron, David Joseph Inczauskis

Master's Theses

Seasonal Diet Variation In Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys Tridecemlineatus) In Southernwestern Michigan, Austin Menzmer

Master's Theses

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) are omnivorous ground squirrels that range from Texas to Alberta and from Michigan to Utah. The amount and type of both animal and plant matter in their diet may vary both geographically and seasonally. The present study was motivated by prior work, based on δ13C analysis of incisor enamel of thirteen-lined ground squirrels from a colony in southwestern Michigan, suggesting that these animals underwent a pronounced, late-season shift in diet from predominantly C3 to C4 plants. However, this inferred dietary shift was not directly demonstrated. Here, I tracked diet of thirteen-lined ground squirrels in southwestern …

That They May All Be One: Historical And Contemporary Ideologies Of Regional Conferences In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Debbie-Ann Francis Jan 2019

That They May All Be One: Historical And Contemporary Ideologies Of Regional Conferences In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Debbie-Ann Francis

Master's Theses

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has been known for its wide diversity along with its struggles in racial relations within the Black SDA community in the United States. The SDA Church established regional conferences for Black SDA leaders as an alternative to full integration within the denomination. For this analysis, an ideological criticism was performed on two videos that focused on the topic of regional conferences. The hegemonic ideology that surfaced was that separation within the church organization based on race is necessary in order to fulfill the mission of the SDA Church and that issues such as racism will …

Assessing Endothelial Dysfunction Estimating The Differences Between 3 Minute And 5 Minute Reactive Hyperemia, Tamiko K. Saldin Jan 2019

Assessing Endothelial Dysfunction Estimating The Differences Between 3 Minute And 5 Minute Reactive Hyperemia, Tamiko K. Saldin

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to define a lower standard cuff occlusion time to induce reactive hyperemia in assessing endothelial dysfunction. In this study, strong evidence was found by a novel technique that used oscillometric methods, which supported that 3 minute reactive hyperemia was sufficient to elicit a significant difference in arterial compliance from baseline. Twenty healthy Cal Poly students were assessed, (n=12 female, n=8 male) aged 22 years old with a standard deviation of 2.04 years. Arterial compliance was estimated by measuring the peak-to-peak oscillations for baseline, 3 minute reactive hyperemia, and 5 minute reactive hyperemia tests, with …

Testosterone Replacement Therapy For The Recovery From Chronic Vestibular Dysfunction Following Repeat Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Male Long-Evans Hooded Rats, Arthur Segismundo Jan 2019

Testosterone Replacement Therapy For The Recovery From Chronic Vestibular Dysfunction Following Repeat Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Male Long-Evans Hooded Rats, Arthur Segismundo

Master's Theses

Repeat mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) is a major public health concern leading to both chronic hypogonadism and vestibular impairment. Following rmTBI, vestibular symptoms are one of the most common complaints and hypogonadism occurs in a majority of patients. Gonadal hormones have a well-established role in neuroplasticity and axonal regeneration. The loss of gonadal hormones due to rmTBI may delay recovery. A clinically relevant closed-headed rmTBI male rodent model was utilized to examine the role of testosterone replacement therapy on chronic vestibular dysfunction. This is the first study to demonstrate both hypogonadism and vestibular dysfunction in the acute and chronic …

Microplastic In Aquatic Food Webs: Museum Specimens And Ingestion Experiments Reveal Controls On Microplastic Ingestion By Freshwater Fish, Loren Hou Jan 2019

Microplastic In Aquatic Food Webs: Museum Specimens And Ingestion Experiments Reveal Controls On Microplastic Ingestion By Freshwater Fish, Loren Hou

Master's Theses

Plastic is pervasive in modern economies and ecosystems. Early research suggests freshwater fish commonly ingest microplastic (particles < 5 mm), which may influence fish digestive tissues, but no studies have examined historical patterns in microplastic consumption or rates of microplastic retention in fish. We measured microplastic in digestive tissue of specimens collected and preserved over the last century (Field Museum, Chicago). We selected Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass), Notropis stramineus (sand shiner), Ictalurus punctatus (channel catfish), and Neogobius melanostomus (round goby) because each was well represented in the museum collection, with specimens from urban rivers. Specimens from 1900-2018 showed increases in microplastic concentration from the 1950's to present. in a second project, we collected round gobies from Lake Michigan in Chicago to conduct feeding experiments to measure microplastic ingestion and retention rates. the majority of microplastic was excreted within 72 hours of ingestion. Results will aid in understanding ecological interactions of microplastic and freshwater fish, informing further work on the movement of microplastic in aquatic food webs.

This included research on technology use patterns among numerous demographic groups, information of the social behaviors …

Using Software-Defined Networking And Openflow Switching To Reroute Network Traffic Dynamically Based On Traffic Volume Measurements, Ihab Al Shaikhli Jan 2019

Using Software-Defined Networking And Openflow Switching To Reroute Network Traffic Dynamically Based On Traffic Volume Measurements, Ihab Al Shaikhli

Master's Theses

Traditional switching and routing have been very effective for network packet delivery but does create some constraints. for example, all packets from a given source to a given destination must always take the same path. Within a traditional Ethernet network, a tree topology must be used. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has the potential to bypass this tree-topology limitation by placing the control of the switches and their forwarding tables under a central device called a controller. SDN also allows for sets of controllers. the controller can identify individual network flows and issue commands to the switches to, in effect, assign individual …

The Mere Presence Effect: Attentional Bias Promoted By Smartphone Presence, Maria Del Pilar Bianchi Bosch Dec 2018

The Mere Presence Effect: Attentional Bias Promoted By Smartphone Presence, Maria Del Pilar Bianchi Bosch

Master's Theses

Smartphones have become an essential part of modern life, offering access to entertainment, information, and social connections from anywhere, at any time. However, research has associated interactions with these devices with maladaptive behaviors and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, recent research has suggested that the mere presence of a smartphone can deplete cognitive resources. We sought to test the hypothesis that the perceptual salience of smartphones would negatively impact perceptual processes. Using a sample of college-aged students (N = 71), we tested whether the mere presence of a smartphone might affect reaction time and accuracy in a lateralized spatial configuration visual search …

Different Methods Of Embodied Cognition In Pedagogy And Its Effectiveness In Student Learning, Cassandra Durkee Dec 2018

Different Methods Of Embodied Cognition In Pedagogy And Its Effectiveness In Student Learning, Cassandra Durkee

Master's Theses

The Mathematical Ideas Analysis hypothesizes that abstract mathematical reasoning is unconsciously organized and integrated with sensory-motor experience. Basic research testing movement, language, and perception during math problem solving supports this hypothesis. Applied research primarily measures students’ performance on math tests after they engage in analogous sensory-motor tasks, but findings show mixed results. Sensory-motor tasks are dependent on several moderators (e.g., instructional guidance, developmental stage) known to help students learn, and studies vary in how each moderator is implemented. There is little research on the effectiveness of sensory-motor tasks without these moderators. This study compares different approaches to working with an …

Master's Theses

Using frameworks from critical race theory, social movement theory, and community-based activism, this thesis explores the phenomena of white fragility, white guilt, and colorblind racial ideology and how they impact the ways predominantly white-identified social and environmental justice organizations approach, build, and maintain solidarity with communities of color in Santa Cruz County, California. A qualitative approach was employed to investigate the experiences of white-identified activists and how they attempt to engage in this constantly challenging process. Using twenty-two semi-structured interviews and eight group observations, I explored how white-identified individuals negotiate the transformation from ‘moral passivity’ to meaningful, personal relationships with …

Social Recommendation Systems, Avni Gulati Dec 2018

Social Recommendation Systems, Avni Gulati

Master's Theses

In recent years, with the rise of online social networks, personalized recommendations that leverage the aspect of social connections have become a very intriguing domain for researchers. In this work, we explore how influence propagation and the decay in the cascading effect of influence from influential users can be leveraged to generate social graph-based recommendations. Understanding how influence propagates within a social network is itself a challenging problem. In this research, we model the decay in influence propagation in directed graphs, utilizing the structural properties of the social graph to measure the propagated influence beyond one-hop. This social network information …

Rock Strength: A Main Control Of Yosemite's Topography?, Alex Jon Hutcherson Dec 2018

Rock Strength: A Main Control Of Yosemite's Topography?, Alex Jon Hutcherson

Master's Theses

Although contrasts in rock strength correlate to variations in topography, the role of rock strength in shaping the landscape of Yosemite National Park is uncertain. Magmatic processes may create variations in mineralogy within a single plutonic unit, while tectonic processes may result in contrasts in joint density and foliation, all of which may lead to variations in rock strength. For this study, the relationship between differences in mineralogy, joint density, and foliation in Yosemite National Park is analyzed to determine the role of rock strength in shaping Yosemite’s topography. Modal mineral abundance and grain size are determined by analyzing cut …

Hes1 Notch Response Elements And Their Roles In Rbpj-K Binding, Michael Majid Khayat Dec 2018

Hes1 Notch Response Elements And Their Roles In Rbpj-K Binding, Michael Majid Khayat

Master's Theses

The Notch signaling pathway is a one of few fundamentally conserved signal transduction pathways critical for metazoan cellular development. Upon ligand activation, the Notch intracellular domain (NICD) translocates to the nucleus and forms a transcription complex with C-binding promoter factor-1 (RBPJ-k/CBF-1/Suppressor of Hairless) and Mastermind-like protein (MAM). The DNA-binding factor, RBPJ-k, binds to a response element containing a consensus sequence of RTGRGAR (where R is G or A). When RBPJ-k interacts with the NICD and MAM, Notch target genes are activated. The most well-characterized gene for Notch is Hes1. Hes1 contains four Notch response elements (NREs), labeled NRE 1-4. Of …

Reproductive Performance, Foraging Effort, And Diet Of An Apex Predator, The Common Murre, At One Of The Largest Nesting Colonies In The California Current System, Stephanie Rianne Schneider Dec 2018

Reproductive Performance, Foraging Effort, And Diet Of An Apex Predator, The Common Murre, At One Of The Largest Nesting Colonies In The California Current System, Stephanie Rianne Schneider

Master's Theses

Common Murre (Uria aalge) are the most abundant avian apex predator nesting in the California Current System (CCS) and nesting is the most energetically demanding phase of their lifecycle. The preyscape within flight distance of their nesting colony determines whether murres produce young, how hard they must work to do so, and what prey types are available to them. This study characterized the reproductive performance, foraging effort, and prey composition of murres nesting at a previously unstudied and large nesting colony in the CCS, Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge, over an 11-year period (2007 - 2017) intended to capture a …

Master's Theses

Understanding the perspectives of others and appreciating their differences are important due to diversity increasing in society. However, research on diversity has seldom examined the ineffectiveness of diversity training on attitudes towards societal diversity and cognitive empathy. The present study was conducted to examine how diversity training affects one’s attitudes toward societal diversity and cognitive empathy. It was hypothesized that attitudes towards societal diversity and cognitive empathy would improve as a result of diversity training. Gender and ethnicity were also hypothesized to interact with diversity training such that women and ethnic minorities would show more positive attitudes towards societal diversity …

Predicting Spatial Distributions Of Demersal Fishes Off Central California, Anne Catherine Tagini Dec 2018

Predicting Spatial Distributions Of Demersal Fishes Off Central California, Anne Catherine Tagini

Master's Theses

Seafloor maps are often used in species distribution modeling (SDM), where maps are paired with fish observations to create models predicting habitat suitability, species density, or species biomass. Problems with the current use of SDM include limited understanding of species relationships with benthic morphology, lack of practical model testing, and deficiency of information on the effects of map resolution on population estimates. A drop camera was used to gather observations of fishes along Central California and paired with remotely sensed bathymetry to create predictive models and maps of species density and biomass. I found that relationships with remotely sensed habitat …

Psychological Presence In Immersive Virtual Environments, Steven L. Wu Dec 2018

Psychological Presence In Immersive Virtual Environments, Steven L. Wu

Master's Theses

Immersive virtual environments are simulated locations that attempt to create a sense of presence, or the psychological feeling that an individual is acting within the simulated environment rather than their physical one. When interfacing with an interactive virtual environment, evidence suggests that aspects of psychological presence are affected, such as time perception and situation awareness. As such, this study hypothesized presence as the construct by which immersive virtual environment usage influences time perception and situation awareness. Two levels of presence were manipulated using a monitor and Oculus Rift. Forty-one participants were tasked with a scavenger hunt in both monitor and …

Associations Between Cortical Structure And Reading Skills In Beginning Readers, Meaghan Perdue Dec 2018

Associations Between Cortical Structure And Reading Skills In Beginning Readers, Meaghan Perdue

Master's Theses

The acquisition of literacy is a challenging task that engages multiple processing systems to integrate multimodal information. As a result, children exhibit wide variability in reading ability, with the lowest performers classified as having Specific Reading Disability (SRD). Functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research has identified a reading network in the brain consisting primarily of left hemisphere temporo-parietal, occipito-temporal, and inferior frontal regions, but the structural neural substrates that support skilled reading during the formative years of reading acquisition remain underspecified. The present study applied a continuous analytic approach to investigate distinct surface-based properties of cortical structure (cortical …
