It may be somewhat difficult at first glance to understand the essential character of the relationship of art to science, and especially to the natural sciences. Without illustration it would be impossible either to learn or to teach these sciences . Drawings are needed in the classroom and in the laboratory to aid the teacher, and they are perhaps even more important in individual research where there is no teacher present to guide and to instruct the student .

The purpose of this study is to present a clear and accurate history of education in Middlesex County from 1669 to 1891. The account is complete in so far as available material has made it possible.
The material presented in this thesis is an original investigation in that the information was secured, largely, from primary sources. This represents the first earnest effort to write a complete and detailed account of the development of education in Middlesex County. The history of the town as such is short--scarcely seventy years--but there was of course a long interval of sketchily recorded events prior to its foundation, in the area which immediately surrounds the site. In all, the period covered by this paper is about a century and three quarters; in that time the frontier post came and went, was succeeded by the tobacco town, and that too faded, leaving only shards and foundations to mark its place.

First we must admit representative ugliness tor purposes of realism, truth, and in connection with the significant the characteristic and such types. Also, we must admit distortion tor purposes of power, emotional strength, logical and organic consistency, and so forth. Possibly the ugly may be admitted to heighten beauty; and certain other forms of the ugly will be admitted artistically so long as comedy and tragedy are called art-forms.
