The term,"truancy", is interpreted in various ways. Julia Richman, District Superintendent of the Public Schools of New York in 1909, said, "The law in some states defines "truancy" as a failure to attend school, making no difference between the parents offense in keeping the child at home and the child's offense in remaining away from school without the parent's knowledge. In the English language, a word denoting time calls for the assistance of other words in order to describe the particular aspect of the time to which reference is made. For instance, the word "night" by itself describes little, but "by night" or "night-time" suggests the specific kind of time in contrast to "day time". The purpose or this monograph is to survey and evaluate the relationship between religious education and the public schools from the early colonial times to the present. Special attention rill be paid to the widespread agitation that formal religious courses be introduced into the public school curriculum. It is to ascertain and set forth Kant's idea of the origin of evil, and then to trace its influence upon recent theology. The problem is complicated by the act that there are contradictory positions set forth by Kant in different ones of his works.
