The purpose of studying the Victorian women in poetry has been to find some relation between the historical woman and the literary woman. Louise E. Rorabacher in a similar thesis considered only the novels of the day (Victorian Women in Life and Fiction, University of Illinois, 1942). Her purpose was to determine the validity of the concept of the woman in the novel in terms of historical fact. She concluded that the fictional woman was real, in a narrow, myopic sense, but that she did not reflect the social change. The picture of her social and conservative home life was …

A Study Of The Curcumin Method For Boron Determination, James Edward Hardcastle

The purpose of the research project, of which this thesis is a partial report, was two fold: first, to develop a method for determining small quantities of boron, and second, to develop a rapid field test for the determination of atmospheric boron. A literature survey revealed that the curcumin method is the most sensitive colorimetric method presently available for boron determination. Also, the curcumin paper test should be readily adapted to the determination of atmospheric boron.

A survey of the literature reveals a substantial body of research concerned with the effects of food and/or water deprivation on body weight, food and water intake, and activity of the albino rat. This research is important because many psychological experiments, particularly those studies in the field of animal learning in which motivation is induced by the use of a nutritional maintenance schedule, require some measurement of performance on consecutive days during which the rats are in a motivational state.

The first school in Danville was established by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Mr. J. Matthews, in the year 1802. This school lasted only twelve months and was followed by a procession of others which soon perished for one reason or another. In 1823 the Danville Male Academy was organized and became the forerunner of the modern public education system of Danville. Soon after, a number or schools were established for "females." This study is concerned with only one, the school that is now Averett College.

The geographical distribution of Pedilanthus tithymaloides is variously listed as Tropical America (Engler, 1919); from Florida to Venezuela (Taylor, 1936); and Caribbean America (Dressler, 1957). Because of its use as an ornamental, the plant is also found in Mexico, China and Java (Dressler, 1957); Hawaii (Degener. 1940); and Bermuda (Britton, 1918). Banerji (1951) and Rao (1956) have worked with fresh hedge material from India. White et al (1941) report that the species is found growing on the graves of natives in Zululand and Rhodesis, and acknowledge that the introduction "from American into the native kraals is a mystery."

More exactly, I shall compare the poetry of Crabbe with the historical records of his era and measure how closely Crabbe came to reproducing, realistically, his own times. I propose in this study to examine the uses of hypnotism in two of Hawthorne 's tales: "Ethan Brand" and "The Prophetic Pictures"; and three of Hawthorne's romances: Fanshawe, The House of the Seven Gables, and The Blithedale Romance. My aims are generally these: to investigate Hawthorne's interest in hypnotism with reference to the manifested popularity of hypnotism in his time; to identify Hawthorne's implication of hypnotism in the above tales and romances; and to analyze Hawthorne 's art of interweaving his themes with the practice of hypnosis.
