Only over the past few years have investigations of the intensity distribution of the light reflected from materials been attempted. Most of these investigations have been done by personnel at the National Bureau of Standards on matt surfaces, and acid etched black glass. It should be noted that separate investigations in the two fields, the methods of analysis of a surface's topography and the intensity distribution of reflected light from different materials have been and still are being performed. Through the eyes of numerous novelists one can come to understand better the roles and the personalities of the men of cloth during the 1800's.

It is the purpose of this paper to explore to what extent the Negro slave was used in the iron and tobacco industries in Virginia. These two particular industries were chosen because they were by far the leaders in the employment of slave labor in Virginia. The slave was used in mining but since this is not specifically manufacturing this aspect of slave labor will only be mentioned briefly. Other capacities for slave labor such as blacksmithing and railroad maintenance are also relatively unimportant when compared to the iron and tobacco industries.

The purpose of this research was to explore the application of low temperature infrared spectroscopy to the study of several chemical problems. In particular the following items were investigated:

1. The design, manufacture, and operation of a low temperature optical cell suitable for infrared spectroscopic studies or gas-solid samples at liquid nitrogen temperature (-196°c) and above.

2. The recording and study of the infrared spectra or nitrogen dioxide and isoprene at 25°c and at lower temperatures.

3. A preliminary study of the reaction between nitrogen dioxide and isoprene at various temperatures using infrared techniques.

This thesis concerns the use of ethyl N-substituted oxamates and ethyl N, N-di-substituted oxamates as intermediates in the synthesis of large molecules.

Richardson et al. (1) showed that ethyl N-aryloxamates were effective in differentiating between primary and secondary alkyl amines.

This thesis makes use of such differentiating ability in order to obtain preferential reaction on series of compounds, each compound containing both primary and secondary amino groups.

Further, the oxamates have been modified in an attempt to find compounds with greater differentiating ability than those used by Richardson et al., (1).
