Jahoda (1958) has summarized the thinking, which has been done about a group of behaviors jointly labeled "positive mental health." After reviewing the conceptualizations of both phenomenologically and analytically oriented writers, Jahoda distilled six classes of responses, which have been listed as representative of mental health. These general classes of responses includes (1) positive self-attitudes, (2) self-actualizing behavior, (J) integrative behavior, (4) autonomous behavior, (5) accurate perceptual behavior, (6) behavior by which the subject obtains mastery over his environment. Photosynthetic rates were measured under constant conditions over a 24 hour period for cultures of Skeletonema costatum and Amphidinium carterae grown under various light - dark regimes. Photosynthetic rate fluctuated for both species under all photoperiods except for A. carterase under 8 hours light per day. Maximum photosynthetic rates occurred generally in the middle of the. light period and minimum rates.in the middle of the dark period. The ratio of maximum to minimum rates, or Pmax/min, differed significantly under the various photoperiods. Pmax/min values . for A. carterae were significantly greater than for s. costatum. During the secession movement of January- February 1861, which culminated in the Montgomery Constitutional Convention, the young Confederate government established well-defined policy objectives for the purpose of securing European allies and material assistance. Basically these aims were three-fold: to secure recognition of the sovereign status of the Confederate states; to induce intervention by the European powers on the side of the Confederacy; and, after April, 1861, to gain a repudiation of the Union blockade from these same powers. Indene oxide (indan, 1,2-epoxy; indene 2,3-oxid is first recorded in the literature in 1919. This compound was formed in practically quantitative yield by the treatment of indene bromo­ hydrin in ether with powdered potassium hydroxide. At this time Van Loon also reported the preparation of indene oxide by mechanical shaking of an anhydrous, ethere!al solution of the bromohydrin with finely powdered potassium hydroxide. The desired product was obtained in a 92-97% yield by this method. The rattlesnake can be distinguished from other types of snakes by its rattling apparatus. Klauber (1956) describes the rattle as an apparatus consisting of varying numbers of three lobed keratin segments. The segments arc arranged in a string by the loose interlocking of the segment lobes. The rattle is attached to tho. snake by the style, the modified terminal vertebra of the rattlesnake. The style is distally branched, forming a rigid core for the proximal rattle segments. The effects of estradiol on RNA, DNA, and protein concentrations in the liver of Natrix fasciata (southern banded water snake) were investigated. Nucleic acid and protein concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically and expressed as mg/gm wet weight tissue.

Significant increases in both RNA and protein occured 48 hours after a single injection of estradiol. After 72 hours the mean RNA level in estradiol treated snakes had decreased significantly from the 48 hour level. The mean protein level at 72 hours, although lower than the 48 hour level, did not decrease significantly.

The goal of this research was to investigate the diffusion of aluminum ions in natural aluminum oxide grown under atmospheric conditions. The basis for the approach employed here had been developed earlier by J. H. Christian and H. L.Taylor. However, these authors studied the diffusion of aluminum ions in an oxide grown in a pure oxy­gen atmosphere. They utilized a glass slide upon which aluminum metal was deposited in vacuo (10^-11 Torr). Oxide was then allowed to grow on this metal by back-filling the vacuum with pure oxygen to a pressure of 40 to 50 m Torr while infrared …

Much of the research was inspired by an interest developed in Alfred Adler's theory of birth order position.
