The Effects Of Positive And Negative Retrieval Cues On Release From Retroactive Interference, Michael P. Etgen May 1994

The Effects Of Positive And Negative Retrieval Cues On Release From Retroactive Interference, Michael P. Etgen

Master's Theses

The following study examined the effects of positive and negative retrieval cues within a release from retroactive interference design. Predictions based upon a modification to the cue-overloading hypothesis were evaluated. Subjects were 79 Introductory Psychology students. They learned two lists, each composed of four-legged animals, and were tested for recall of the originally-learned list. Informed subjects were supplied with a retrieval cue for the interpolated list to provide a release from retroactive interference. All subjects were further divided into those who were released by becoming aware during original learning and those who were not. Comparisons revealed a reliable and comparable …

Henry Taylor Wickham And The Virginia Senate, 1888-1907, Steven A. Colvin May 1994

Henry Taylor Wickham And The Virginia Senate, 1888-1907, Steven A. Colvin

Master's Theses

The decade of the 1890s was a complex period in the political history of Virginia. Virginia had experienced prosperity because of the development of railroads after the Civil War. Because of this contribution to statewide growth, the railroads had developed monopolistic characteristics which prompted an ambivalent response from most Virginians. It was said that during the 1890s Virginia's railroads controlled the state legislature through the medium of the Democratic Party. During this period before the creation of laws dealing with political conflicts of interests, Henry Taylor Wickham represented the counties of Caroline and Hanover in the Virginia Senate. In 1937, …

The North American Free Trade Agreement And Its Potential Impact On The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Brian Charles Kroll May 1994

The North American Free Trade Agreement And Its Potential Impact On The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Brian Charles Kroll

Master's Theses

This thesis consists of two parts. First, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is described in terms of free trade theory, its precedents, and the text of the treaty. Second, the international aspects of Virginia's economy are examined with regard to NAFTA. This thesis asserts that if implemented, NAFTA will produce the following results for Virginia: merchandise exports to Canada and Mexico will continue to increase; employment supported by merchandise exports will continue to increase; factory relocations and related employment losses will continue to be outpaced by employment growth in other manufacturing areas; trade in services will undergo direct …

The History Of The South Side Railroad, 1846-1870, James M. Bisbee May 1994

The History Of The South Side Railroad, 1846-1870, James M. Bisbee

Master's Theses

The South Side Rail Road, chartered in 1846, was the fourth railroad to serve the city of Petersburg, Virginia, and, upon its completion in 1854, was the only direct rail link the city had through the Virginia Piedmont to Lynchburg and points west. The railroad was a major conveyor of trade through the Southside region of Virginia and served as an engine of economic development for the area. During the Civil War the road was a vital means of transportation of men and materiel for the Confederate government. After the war, General William Mahone, a railroad professional and war hero, …

The Question Of Free Will In James Joyce's Exiles And William Faulkner's Requiem For A Nun, Robin Hume Brownhill May 1994

The Question Of Free Will In James Joyce's Exiles And William Faulkner's Requiem For A Nun, Robin Hume Brownhill

Master's Theses

Joyce's Exiles and Faulkner's Requiem for a Nun are both unsuccessful naturalistic dramas written by novelists. This study compares the two texts, applying the question, "Is free will possible?" to four common themes within each work: the past, religion, marriage and politics. Within these four contexts, the two plays exhibit similarities of language and content; however, they consistently distinguish themselves on the question of free will. Joyce's work shows a protagonist who "frees" himself, through sacrifice, from the bonds of tradition. Faulkner's work shows a protagonist "doomed" and "damned" to suffer endlessly for her past. Despite their opposing presentations of …

The Representation Of Tabooed Love In Lillian Smith's Fiction, Jane Elizabeth Payne May 1994

The Representation Of Tabooed Love In Lillian Smith's Fiction, Jane Elizabeth Payne

Master's Theses

My study explores Lillian Smith's autobiographical relationship to her fiction, particularly two novels, Strange Fruit, and One Hour. The focus of this work is Smith's challenge to the category of sexual orientation and her related use of fiction as a source of social commentary and self-reflection. Smith's uses veiled and encoded language and other kinds of tabooed love to study her own lesbian love. She also assumes a male persona to understand and express her erotic attraction to women. I approach Smith's life and literature in chronological order with an emphasis upon characterization, symbolism, narrative technique, and metaphors of nature. …

The Anterior Commissure : The Effects Of Sex And Prenatal Stress, Hendree Evelyn Jones Apr 1994

The Anterior Commissure : The Effects Of Sex And Prenatal Stress, Hendree Evelyn Jones

Master's Theses

The effects of prenatal stress (light/restraint) on the development of the anterior commissure (AC) were investigated. The AC is known to be a sexually dimorphic structure of the brain not directly involved in reproductive behavior; unlike hypothalamic structures and nuclei, however, little is known about its development. The present work examines two factors, sex and stress, known to influence other brain areas. Pregnant rats were assigned to prenatal treatment and control groups. The treatment group was stressed thrice daily for thirty minutes using light/restraint during the third trimester (day 14-21). Control dams remained undisturbed. Male and female offspring were killed …

The Canton Commune, Royce Patrick Grubic Apr 1994

The Canton Commune, Royce Patrick Grubic

Master's Theses

The Canton Commune is a detailed study of the Communist-led insurrection that occurred in the city of Canton in southern China on December 11-13, 1927, and its fate as history. Attention is paid in the thesis to the Commune's significant presence in the discourse of the Stalin-Trotsky power struggle of the late 1920s. The primary emphasis, however, is on the Commune's inability to become part of the revolutionary mythology of the People's Republic of China or international communism. The author traces the evolution of Soviet and Chinese interpretations of the Canton Commune, using these as a means to explore the …

Lame Duck Theory Called Into Question, Lawrence Leonard Schack Apr 1994

Lame Duck Theory Called Into Question, Lawrence Leonard Schack

Master's Theses

The foundations of lame duck theory, the expression connoting the study of executive/legislative relations in association with tenure constraints, are composed of broad generalizations which are generally unchallenged by political scientists. Evidence in support of this assertion is scattered throughout relevant literature, most of which centers upon the national executive, the two-term limitation imposed by the Twenty Second Amendment, and the subsequent lack of influence our country's presidents wield as their "political capital dwindles" proportionate with the temporal progress of their second term. Interestingly, while a great deal of time and energy has been devoted to the discussion of the …

Demyansk 1941-1943 : A Microscopic View Of The German-Soviet Conflict, Andrew K. Koch

Master's Theses

Well over ten million men served in the Axis armies during the war, and over 70 percent of these troops fought on the Eastern Front. Each soldier has/had a personal story to tell - their fighting units are all worthy of mention and every battle they fought in should be appraised. It has been the habit of English-speaking historians studying the Second World War to concentrate almost exclusively on the European Theater of operations. The events on the Eastern Front, with the exception of the battles of Leningrad, Stalingrad, and perhaps Kursk, are practically ignored. This study, however, will analyze …

The Tidewater Confronts The Storm : Antisubmarine Warfare Off The Capes Of Virginia During The First Six Months Of 1942, Brett Leo Holland Jan 1994

The Tidewater Confronts The Storm : Antisubmarine Warfare Off The Capes Of Virginia During The First Six Months Of 1942, Brett Leo Holland

Master's Theses

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Germany launched a devastating submarine campaign against the merchant marine traffic along the eastern seaboard of America. The antisubmarine defenses mounted by the United States were insufficient in the first months of 1942. This thesis examines how the United States Navy, in cooperation with the Army and the Coast Guard, began antisubmarine operations to protect the Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding area from the menace of Germany's U-boats during the first year of America's participation in World War II.

This thesis complements the other histories of antisubmarine warfare during World War II, …

Investigation Of Different Patterns Of Induction Of Amylases In Different Cultivars Of Rice, Oryza Sativa L., Angela M. Mosley Jan 1994

Investigation Of Different Patterns Of Induction Of Amylases In Different Cultivars Of Rice, Oryza Sativa L., Angela M. Mosley

Master's Theses

This study investigated whether rice exhibits exceptions to the accepted model, in cereals, for the induction of a and P-amylase in the embryo and endosperm during germination. We also tried to establish whether different patterns of induction were cultivar specific, or due to the influence of ripening temperature, or a component of the incubation medium. An isoelectric focusing technique was used to monitor a- and P-amylase activities, a spectrophotometric assay was used to quantify the activity of a-amylase, and two cDNA clones, RAmy3D and RAmylA, were used to measure a-amylase RNA accumulation by Northern analysis. Distinct patterns of induction of …

Finding The Words : Negotiating Linguistic Communities In Sherley Anne Williams' Dessa Rose, Nanci M. Roberts Jan 1994

Finding The Words : Negotiating Linguistic Communities In Sherley Anne Williams' Dessa Rose, Nanci M. Roberts

Master's Theses

A study of linguistic communities in Sherley Anne Williams' Dessa Rose, this thesis focuses on the relationship between cultural behavior and the use of language. Using anthropological studies on the role of language in society, as well as major criticism of the novel, this paper seeks to prove that only through equalizing linguistic power can the characters achieve a language system which accurately reflects their experience. The paper focuses on four primary communities: the unequal interracial community of Southern slave society, the slave community, the white planter community, and finally the equal interracial community that results after slavery.
