A History Of Virginia In The Spanish-American War, Virginia Rowe Christian Jul 1954

A History Of Virginia In The Spanish-American War, Virginia Rowe Christian

Master's Theses

Half a century ago, on February 15,1898, the United States Battleship Maine was destroyed by a mysterious explosion as she lay peacefully at moorings in Havana Harbor. At the time, the sympathy of the United States citizens lay strongly with revolutionists in Cuba who were then attempting to secure their freedom from the galling yoke of Spanish rule. The episode of the Maine gave added impetus to the trend which was inevitably drawing the United States and Spain into a state of war and the final breach occurred on April 19,1898, when the United States government recognized the independence of …

A Study Of The Mysticism Of Plotinus And Augustine, R. Baine Harris Jul 1954

A Study Of The Mysticism Of Plotinus And Augustine, R. Baine Harris

Master's Theses

Three major subjects are the concern of this study: Mysticism, Plotinus, and St. Augustine, any one of which would allow elaborate investigation. Here, we have made no attempt to deal with any one of these comprehensively, but have been concerned only to make a comparative analysis of the mysticisms of Plotinus and Augustine.

The writer's interest in Plotinus stems from the fact that Plotinus is both a first-rate philosopher and a mystic, being generally regarded as "the father of Western mysticism." The significance of Augustine in the history of Western Civilization and the fact that he is both a convert …

Moses Myers Of Norfolk, Moses Jacob Burak Jul 1954

Moses Myers Of Norfolk, Moses Jacob Burak

Master's Theses

Moses Myers was a child or the revolutionary era. He lived in an age of world chaos. His eyes saw the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Panic or 1819. During those upheavals be both made and lost fortunes. He raised a large family and lived through the sorrow or seeing them die, one after another. In the last years of his life he was penniless, but he remained indomitable to the end . That is why his life is worth studying; it is a story or courage and faith.

A Study Of Chaucer's Influence On English Literature Through Dryden, Elder Blair Apperson Jul 1954

A Study Of Chaucer's Influence On English Literature Through Dryden, Elder Blair Apperson

Master's Theses

Geoffrey Chaucer is one of the greatest poets of our English literature. If Shakespeare stands apart as our greatest, then it is John Milton who must dispute with Chaucer the honor of second place. Milton undoubtedly surpasses Chaucer in the grandeur of his imagination and the sublimity or his poetic style; but "he cannot equal him in the range and variety of his art." On one hand we have Chaucer, the grave and serious poet.always keenly conscious that "our human life is a shifting quicksand of mutability, that lasting happiness can never be our earthly portion;" whereas we have but …

The decision of the Pennsylvania Railroad Authorities to abandon the ferry service of the Elisha Lee, prior to the boats annual inspection by the United States Coast Guard in March, 1953, created a bit of excitement on the part of the Eastern Shore Inhabitants. Case Study Of The Financing Of The Operations Of A Government Agency Under The Industrial Fund, Cecil Franklin Jones

Master's Theses

Savings aggregating millions of dollars annually have been made possible.by fundamental improvements of a Government-wide nature and the modernization and streamlining of accounting methods and systems of individual departments and agencies. The impetus for instituting these changes in fiscal procedures was provided in the recommendations of the Hoover Commission as submitted to Congress February 15, 1949.

The pilot installation, or "guinea. pig", was the Military Sea Transportation Service, a military agency within the Navy Department to which the author had been assigned as Assistant to the Comptroller after recall to active duty in November 1950. This material is presented in …

A Study Of Leadership As A Function Of The Situation, Kathryne Creighton Bentley Apr 1954

A Study Of Leadership As A Function Of The Situation, Kathryne Creighton Bentley

Master's Theses

Frequently, someone has remarked of another, "He is a born leader." Such a statement has been a prevailing sentiment or many past generations rather than a fact supported by established proof. Scientists have long recognized the importance of environment as well as heredity in shaping the individual personality. However, environment has more frequently than not been considered to consist of the influence of personalities on an individual to the exclusion of other important factors which, until very recently were given little consideration.

Earlier studies of leadership have been concerned with qualities inherent in certain individuals. Scientists have been able, by …
