The Bacterial Flora Of The Alimentary Canal Of Passalus Cornutus Fabricius, George Taylor Tunstall

The author has carried out an investigation of the bacterial flora of the alimentary canal of twenty-five specimens of Passalus Cornutus Fabricius between February and August and has described the species of organisms encountered. One hundred and eighty-two organisms were identified. Five families, six genera, and sixteen species were represented. Family Enterobacteriaceae is represented by: Escherichia freundii (Braak), Escherichia intermedium (Werkman and Gillen), Erwinia nimipressularis (Carter), Erwinia passali (sp. nov.), Erwinia intests (sp. nov.), and Erwinia virginia (sp. nov.). Only Bacterium passali (sp. nov.) is found in Family Bacteriaceae. Family Achromobacteriaceae is represented by Achromobacter passali (sp. nov.). Family Bacillaceae …

Most natural bodies of water which have been investigated have been shown to contain bacteria. Exceptions apparently occur where we find those waters which, due to their chemical constitution and physical makeup, are inimical even to the growth of bacteria .
Since bacteria are virtually ubiquitous in waters, it would necessarily follow that biologists interested in this aspect of biology would have intensively studied bacteria and the part they play in the biology of water. It was the purpose ot this study to determine, by means of two different objective personality inventories, what significant differences, it any, exist in certain specific areas of personality adjustment between an experimental group of twenty-tour crippled children and an equated, non-crippled control group. The areas of personality integration studied were social maladjustment, personal inferiority, family maladjustment, insecurity, irritability, and daydreaming.

The Myxomycetes, because of their naked, mobile mass of protoplasm have served biologists and chemists as material for the study of the characteristics of protoplasm. The typical life his tory of such an organism may be summarized as follows: The vegetative phase in the life history consists of a naked mass of protoplasm, to which Oienkowski (9) applied the name "plasmodium". The author's interest in this problem grew out of the results obtained with freshmen in the Westhampton College orientation program in September 1948. It has been well established that chemical and physical factors exert a marked effect upon the plankton population in bodies of water. However, the literature reveals the fact that the same chemical and physical factors not only produce a different effect upon plankton in different bodies of water, but are not consistent in their effects upon plankton in like bodies of water. For example, Birge and Juday (1911) made a study of 150 lakes, not widely separated in distance or varying in topographic conditions.
