Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) received infective inocula of 5, 10, 20, and 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The effects of varying doses of larvae on prepatent period larval production, worm establishment, worm size, and fertility were studied. The aquatic gastropod Biomphalaria glabratta was the experimental intermediate host.

The duration of the prepatent period varied from 37 to 45 days. The shortest prepatent period was observed in animals that received the highest infective inoculum. strong evidence suggests that the serum ferroxidases (ceruloplasmin andferroxidase II) promote the formation of Fe-III transferrin and thereby stimulate the turnover of iron from tissue stores. Ceruloplasmin is the major ferroxidase in human serum; whereas, ferroxidase II accotmts for an increased proportion of the activity in less highly developed animals. A large fold increase in total ferroxidase II activity was observed when both human and rabbit sera were subjected to gel-filtration on sephadex G-200. This indicated that whole serum might contain a potent inhibitor of ferroxidase II. Such an inhibitor has been isolated and purified to homogeneity by a combination …

An Electrophoretic Comparison Of Gene Loci In Etheostoma Nigrum And Etheostoma Olmstedi From The James River Drainage, Virginia, Randall Keith Falls

As many as five different populations of Etheostoma nigrum and Etheostoma olmstedi have been identified in the James River drainage, Virginia. Genetic variation of these populations was analyzed with starch gel electrophoresis and revealed only three distinct populations. Nine loci encoding five enzyme systems and two loci encoding muscle proteins were examined in tissue homogenates. All populations were monomorphic with the exception of the esterase-3 (Est-3), phosphoglucomutase (Pgm-1) and phosphoglucose isomerase (Pgi) loci. Two alleles of Est-3 exhibited activity in the homozygous and heterozygous conditions. Pgm-1 occurred as two alleles with a high degree of heterozygosity (46% for E. nigrum …

The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between field dependency and performance on an eyewitness task. Sixty four college students participated in the experiment. Subjects were divided into two groups, field dependent and field independent, based on their scores on the Group Embedded Figures Test (Witkin et al. , 1971). All the subjects viewed a series of slides depicting a wallet snatching incident and, after completing a short, filler activity, filled out a thirty item questionnaire on the slides. The Spatial Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James William Newlin

The hypothesis is that spatial distributions of phytoplankton standing crop and photosynthetic capacity in Westhampton Lake are homogeneous was tested. Distributions were analyzed with respect to horizontal and vertical planes separately and combined. The study was divided into three time period: 1) late summer stratification, 2) early fall mixing, and 3) fall turnover, based on isothermal lines of the lake at the deepest station. Phytoplankton standing crop was measured by spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods. The photosynthetic capacity was measured flurometrically. Combined horizontal and vertical spatial distribution of standing crop was clumped for the entire lake and during each time period. …

One hundred two male mice , Mus musculus, ICR strain, age four weeks, were obtained. Fifty-one mice were pinealectomized and 51 were sham operated. The animals were divided into three photoperiod groups: 1.5L:22.5D, 14L:10D, 24L; 0D. The mice were subcutaneously injected daily with 10 ug melatonin or control solution from post-operative day J to post-operative day 60, On post-operative day 60 representatives of each photo­ period-surgery-injection regimen were paired with females. Populations of zooplankton, Keratella cochlea's (Rotifera) Bosmina longirostris (Cladocera), and Mesocyclopsedax (Copepoda) were sampled in Westhampton Lake from June 30 to December 22, 1978. Population densities were estimated over time and analyzed for stability relative to the occurrence of rainfall. Two aspects of stability were used for analysis and given operational definitions as follows: Resistance - a population was resistant if its density was not more variable during periods of rain compared with periods of little or no rain; Persistence - a population was persistent if its density during periods of rain was not different from its density in periods …

The Vascular Flora Of The Kersey-Crump Creek Watershed, Hanover County, Virginia, Eddie Reeves Smith

A floristic survey was conducted in the Kersey-Crump Creek watershed, Hanover County, Virginia from spring 1978 through summer 1980. This upper Coastal Plain area (42 km2) near the fall line yielded 514 species of vascular plants, representing 334 genera and 113 families. Four hundred and seventy-nine county records were established. Panax trifolium, colonizing a rich wooded creek bottom, was the only plant rare to Virginia. Voucher specimens are deposited in the herbaria of the University of Richmond, Virginia, and the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia.
