Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic Gram negative facultative anaerobe. It is found primarily in the soil, but is ubiquitous in nature. The clinical significance of the organism is attributed to its innate resistance to antibiotics and its ability to survive in the presence of compounds that would be lethal to other organisms. Hospitals constitute one such environment where Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been found to exist in weak antiseptic solutions. hand creams. and hydrotherapy tanks. The hospital is also a place where patients who are severely burned. have cystic fibrosis. or whose resistance is otherwise compromised are at an increased risk …

A Profile Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Keith Allen Boisvert

Spatial and temporal variability in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial assemblages in the lower portion of the James River was examined. The antibiotic resistance of culturable coliforms was compared to the resistance in the microbial community. Antibiotic resistance was determined via colony formation on media containing antibiotics. The antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline were used at concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ug/ml. Statistically significant differences in the mean number of antibiotic resistant isolates were observed among both sample sites and dates. From a military and strategic standpoint, the First World War was, for the British and most other belligerents, a disaster: economies were pressured to their limits and few events exemplified tactical, operational, and ·strategic futility more than the Western Front. Since 1918, politicians, journalists, and historians alike have endeavored to assess the reasons for the catastrophe that was the Great War and to place blame on anyone's shoulders but their own. The sexual victimization of children in an increasing crime problem in this country and is now also recognized as a serious mental health issue. It has been estimated that the risk of victimization could be as high as one in ten for boys (Finkelhor, 1979) and one in three for girls (Anderson, Martin, Mullen, Romans, & Herbison, 1993). Girls are eight times as likely as boys to suffer rape (Finkelhor & Dziuba-Leatherman, 1994). Prevalence rates estimate between 15% and 38% of women (Finkelhor, 1984; Herman, 1981) and 6% of men (Finkelhor, 1984) have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA).

This study examined the effectiveness of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) as surrogates for fish in concentrating polychlorinated biphenyls. Golden shiners (Notemigonus crysolucas) and SPMDs were exposed to three different concentrations (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0ppm) of Aroclor 1254 for 1, 3, and 5 days under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of Aroclor 1254 were measured in the SPMDs and fish tissue using extraction techniques and gas chromatography. The concentrations of PCB in SPMDs and N. crysolucas were positively correlated. This relationship compared favorably with data from other studies. This examination of Chaucer's Merchant's Tale was undertaken as a response to existing scholarship. While criticism in the past tended toward a literal reading of the text, viewing it as a misogynist Merchant's story attesting to the innate depravity of women, more recent feminist criticism has leaned toward a reading which endeavors to defend the actions of May, claiming an evolvement on her part towards autonomy and self-knowledge. This thesis, taking its cue from French feminist theoretical assertions concerning self, refutes both of these readings. While it acknowledges the subversive nature of May's actions, it is unable to recognize any …
