A History Of The Review And Herald Publishing Association., Carl Bruce Mosher Aug 1948

A History Of The Review And Herald Publishing Association., Carl Bruce Mosher

Master's Theses

In he first half of the nineteenth century, a great revival in the study of the Scripture took place, wherein many minds were drawn to the study of prophecies and the second coming of Christ. In America, William Miller and his associates became the prominent exponents of Christ's eminent return. This paper looks to study the history of the Review and Herald Publishing Association in order to see its implications and manifestations.

A Survey Of Labor Legislation, Melvin Walde Burnett Jul 1948

A Survey Of Labor Legislation, Melvin Walde Burnett

Master's Theses

During the last fifty years, labor legislation and public opinion have fluctuated widely. People showed little interest in the unions and their fight for free collective bargaining, until the thirties when the New Deal ushered in a new era. President Roosevelt and the federal government, supported by public opinion, undortook to aid substantially the unions in their organizational and collective bargaining activities. By this time the people believed that one way to help recovery was to give every aid to unions, who in turn would fight for higher wages.

Modern Fire Insurance, Charles Allen Levey Apr 1948

Modern Fire Insurance, Charles Allen Levey

Master's Theses

It is not the purpose of this thesis to provide a dissertation on the inner workings of a fire insurance policy. That has been done many times in the past by persons far more capable. In fact, that has been almost the sole approach uaed in writing in the fire insurance field

The attempt is rather to provide a different approach to te business . . . that of the agent, the fieldman, and the production staff.

It has been necessary to define the terms to be used just as in any other project. However, the space and effort given …

The History Of The Slate Industry In Buckingham County, Virginia, Laurie Pitts Jones Apr 1948

The History Of The Slate Industry In Buckingham County, Virginia, Laurie Pitts Jones

Master's Theses

No one has ever published a history of the Slate industry in Buckingham County, Virginia. Many geologists and newspaper correspondents have written from time to time, short articles and technical descriptions of various phases of the Buckingham slate industry, but all of the related published material that I have had access to has been somewhat sketchy and inaccurate. Consequently, this essay is an attempt to fill, in a comprehensive manner, another of the numerous gaps in the economic and industrial history of Virginia.

David Vincent Dickenson, A Soldier Of The Confederacy., Stuart Sydnor Walden Jan 1948

David Vincent Dickenson, A Soldier Of The Confederacy., Stuart Sydnor Walden

Master's Theses

In March 1778, there enlisted in the Continental Army a young man, Griffith Dickenson, who was later the grandfather of David Vincent Dickenson.

This young man had been born in Hanover County, Virginia, on August 8, 1757. However, only a comparatively few years of his life were spent at the place of his birth. There was an unfortunate second marriage of Griffith's father which led to his departure, at the age of twelve, from the paternal home. Refuge was found in the home of a kind-hearted mechanic where Griffith worked as a helper, or assistant, until he was eighteen years …

Youth Work In A Rural Church, Verna Gertrude Palmer Jan 1948

Youth Work In A Rural Church, Verna Gertrude Palmer

Master's Theses

Youth work has been an important part of the activity of churches. Most of the studies about it and most of the programs for young people, however, seem to concern town and city churches more than rural churches.

It is my purpose in this paper to present a study of the work that is being done with and for young people in rural churches in Virginia. First a survey will be made of conditions which contribute to the problems of youth work in rural churches in general. Then the youth activities and problems of churches in Virginia will be considered. …

The Need For Clergy In Seventeenth Century Virginia And The Methods Adopted To Supply This Need, Wayland Horace Jones Jan 1948

The Need For Clergy In Seventeenth Century Virginia And The Methods Adopted To Supply This Need, Wayland Horace Jones

Master's Theses

The Church had been cleansed of the Roman element, the Puritans were working within the Church, the civil government protected the Church and the people respected her. This religious motivation coupled with the new political end material well being in England were responsible for the efforts which resulted in Jamestown.
