An Ecological Study Of The Bacterial Flora Of Westhampton Lake, Thomas Constantine Mandes Jul 1952

An Ecological Study Of The Bacterial Flora Of Westhampton Lake, Thomas Constantine Mandes

Master's Theses

Most natural bodies of water which have been investigated have been shown to contain bacteria. Exceptions apparently occur where we find those waters which, due to their chemical constitution and physical makeup, are inimical even to the growth of bacteria .

Since bacteria are virtually ubiquitous in waters, it would necessarily follow that biologists interested in this aspect of biology would have intensively studied bacteria and the part they play in the biology of water. Quite the contrary; instead of the study continuing along lines laid down by early scholars it has shifted to a study of bacteria which were …

Student Mortality At Richmond College, 1946-1952, Thomas E. Coleman Jr.

Many problems face our colleges today, and certainly one of the most serious ot these is that of student withdrawals. This also has been a major concern of the officials of Richmond College, and as a result it was suggested that this particular study be undertaken. Therefore, a thorough analysis of this situation was begun, with the hope of arriving at some conclusions which will help to eliminate or reduce at J.east a part of the major causes of student mortality, at Richmond College.

In undertaking this study careful consider ation was given to the selection of a group which …

A Comparison Between The Use Of Projection Planes And The Non Use Of Projection Planes In The Teaching Of Mechanical Drawing In The High Schools, Arthur Wendell Allison

Master's Theses

For many years the planes of projection have been for gotten or ignored by many teachers in the teaching of mechan ical drawing in the high schools. The reasons suggested by those teachers who do not use the planes of projection in their teaching have been based upon their observations and conclusions, and in no instance which the writer has discover ed has experimental evidence been presented to support these contentions.

It is the purpose of this study to determine the value of the use of the projection planes in the teaching of high school mechanical drawing. A relative comparison …

A Survey Of Guidance Activities In Group Iii High Schools In Virginia, Edward Michael Branich Jul 1952

A Survey Of Guidance Activities In Group Iii High Schools In Virginia, Edward Michael Branich

Master's Theses

Recognition or a definite need for organized guidance services is so general that planned guidance programs need no defense. In the editor's introduction to a recent book on guidance practices, Franklin P. Zeran has this to say, "school administrators are becoming more and more interested in initiating and developing functional guidance programs within their schools." Numerous articles discussing guidance -- its principles, functions, techniques, and methods of evaluation -- have appeared in periodicals devoted to education. The State Board of Education of Virginia, in its newly adopted standards for the accrediting or Secondary Schools, states: "Guidance services shall be provided …

Virginia, The Pioneer In Historical Markers, Julian Murry Howell Apr 1952

Virginia, The Pioneer In Historical Markers, Julian Murry Howell

Master's Theses

In beginning a study of' Virginia's historical markers it is well to review the economic background which provided tho necessary impetus to initiate the program. The introduction of more labor saving devices, shorter hours of work, improved transportation facilities, and better tourist accommodations, had encouraged the spending of newly acquired leisure in travel. The economic advantages to be gained in having tourists spend more time in our State became increasingly evident as Chambers of Commerce and other public spirited organizations became aware of the need of improving and enlarging their own communities. This awakening to the advantages which were to …

Some Reductions Of Substituted Benzalacetophenones By Aluminum Isopropoxide And Lithium Aluminum Hydride, Calvin Lyndall Fisher

Master's Theses

A Study Of The Four Public Bridges Across The James River, Demitrios Basiliou Pantele

Master's Theses

As a result of its expansion to both the northern and southern banks of the James River, the city of Richmond, Virginia, has been obliged to construct a number of bridges in order to provide a link between the two parts of the city. There are now four such structures connecting north and south Richmond, the eldest dating back to the eighteenth century, with the most recent having been erected as recently as 1934. In the pages that follow it shall be our purpose to tell the story of these four spans not only from the point of view of …
