A Histomorphological Comparison Of The Urinary Systems In The Serranid Fishes, Roccus Sexatilis (Walbaum) And Roccus Americanus (Gmelin), Irwin Beitch

Master's Theses

The urinary systems of Roccus saxatilis (Walbaum) and Roccus Americanus (Gmelin) were studied to check the validity of the monogeneric classification and to examine the osmoregulatory mechanism that allows the species to survive in environments of various salinities. The gross anatomy of the urinary systems of 13 R saxatilis and 12 R. americanus showed a number of similarities to exist, e.g. the general mesonephric form and size, uretal position and length, and the renal venous system. The head kidney, a hemopoietic organ, was larger in R. saxatilis than in R. americanus. Histological comparisons were made of H and E serial …

Developments In The Financing Of Residential Real Estate, James Thomas Mills Jul 1962

Developments In The Financing Of Residential Real Estate, James Thomas Mills

Master's Theses

Real estate, in the early twentieth century, was known to be one of the most stable and dependable revenue producing assets in the portfolios of investing institutions. However, in 1925, there began a slow rise in the rate of foreclosures of mortgage loans. The stock market collapse cam in 1929 and then the Depression. The causes of foreclosure and financial collapse can be linked to the real estate practices that were used during this period of time. This paper looks to examine those practices and how they affected the economy.

Integrated Versus Departmentalized Teaching Of Eighth Grade Science At William Cullen Bryant Intermediate School, Wilson Lee Faris

Master's Theses

Scientific achievements in the past few decades have stimulated educators to investigate current content and practices in teaching science at the 8th grade level. Man at the threshold of space has become a reality as a result of achievements in science during the past decade. The most notable achievements have been the orbital space flights. Control of atomic energy, the development of powerful rockets, advancement in radar detection and communication, along with discoveries in space medicine have made it necessary to improve and strengthen the eighth grade science program in order to produce the science personnel needed for continued progress. …

Characterization And Determination Of Aldehydes By The Ultraviolet Spectral Changes Resulting From Acetal Formation, Edwin Patrick Crowell

Master's Theses

Aldehydes are a very important group of organic compounds because they have been round to contribute t the flavor and odor of many foods and plants . To the organic chemist, aldehydes are important because of their reactivity and interesting chemistry.

Because aldehydes are so prevalent in natural products and because they have . wide use in industrial and synthetic chemistry, their analytical chemistry is extensive . Despite this, there is still a need for rapid, simple, and general procedure for characterization or aldehydes that is not subject to extensive interferences.

The primary purpose of this study was to develop …

An Exploratory Study Of Employee Attitudes Toward And Knowledge Of Non-Wage Benefits And Services, Grayson Eugene Dodson

Master's Theses

Current importance is placed on benefits received by employees other than their paycheck. The attitudes ot the interested parties seem to be indicated in current literature as follows: management, cautious and defensive; labor unions, aggressive and demanding; government, compromising; and employees, unconcerned.

This study has a three fold purpose: first, to review the various primary non-wage benefits and services from written and published literature; second, to determine employee attitudes toward and knowledge of benefits through personal interviews; and third, to render observations that may be helpful in the future for interested parties in making decisions relative to employes benefits and …

A Survey Of Parasitism In A Population Of Pigeons, Robert Flynn Jochen Apr 1962

A Survey Of Parasitism In A Population Of Pigeons, Robert Flynn Jochen

Master's Theses

Numerous papers relative to parasites in pigeons can be found in the literature, but information concerning parasitic infections in pigeons of Virginia is scant, and no survey of parasitism has been made. Furthermore, no one survey or parasitism in pigeons of North America has included the incidence of both ectoparasites and endoparasites. Information relative to the incidence of individual parasites or groups of parasites, however, is available in recent literature, as well as information concerning isolated cases of parasitism

The present study was undertaken to (1) determine the nature and extent of parasitism in a population of pigeons in Henrico …

Growth Stocks-Fact Or Fancy, Arthur Grey Staples Jr. Jan 1962

Growth Stocks-Fact Or Fancy, Arthur Grey Staples Jr.

Master's Theses

Often in business articles the following remark may be seen: "If a company is to growing, it is retrogressing; for no business may stand still!" The sagacity of this observation with regard to individual enterprises cannot be stressed too frequently nor too strongly. Yet this truism becomes even more appropriate and apparent when applied to a nation's economy. Although this paper deals primarily with common stocks, seldom can any part of a nation;s economy move independently of the total trend. Therefore, a few explanatory remarks regarding the United States economy are in order.

Important Developments In The Grand Jury System In Virginia During The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Melvin Dean Snead Jan 1962

Important Developments In The Grand Jury System In Virginia During The Seventeenth And Eighteenth Centuries, Melvin Dean Snead

Master's Theses

By March of 1658 tho grand jury system in Virginia was found to be sadly lacking. It had scarcely lasted ten years. Probably the reason for this failure was that the county justices failed to carry out the details of establishing grand juries. Because or Virginia's rural setting, this system would surely have been a worthwhile one. It seems to be quite evident that here we had a powerful instrument for aiding in criminal detection, and at the same time an instrument for protecting the innocent. However, it was not used to its best advantage and as a result it …

Through A Glass Darkly : The Literary Reputation Of Henry James, Linda Goodman Lewis Jan 1962

Through A Glass Darkly : The Literary Reputation Of Henry James, Linda Goodman Lewis

Master's Theses

In the course of any artist's career there usually are changes in the attitudes towards him. If he is developing, the changes should be a fact, especially if the times are changing also. If the artist does not show any differences during his career, there is little point in his creating the first product.

William Butler Yeats' Contribution To The Celtic Renaissance In Ireland, Marian Marsh Sale Jan 1962

William Butler Yeats' Contribution To The Celtic Renaissance In Ireland, Marian Marsh Sale

Master's Theses

The story of Ireland's Literary Revival is the story not only of the life and death of the Gaelic language in Ireland and the attempt to revive it as the national medium of speech, but also of the rise, during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of modern Anglo-Irish literature, which gave to Irish letters the right to be judged independently of English literature. The formation of this new medium of national literary expression was the result of the interaction of the work of certain translators and folklorists with that of those writers who sought to restore the Gaelic …

Clerical Portraits In The Nineteenth Century British Novel, Doralee Forsythe Richardson Jan 1962

Clerical Portraits In The Nineteenth Century British Novel, Doralee Forsythe Richardson

Master's Theses

Because there were only four recognized professions which a nineteenth century respectable English gentleman could enter and still maintain his family reputation--the army, the navy, and church, and the bar-- it is natural that clergymen should appear frequently in the novels of the period. Through the eyes of numerous novelists one can come to understand better the roles and the personalities of the men of cloth during the 1800's.

By way of limiting myself to a reasonable amount of material, I have chosen to concentrate on those novels in which a clerical scene provides the major characters and action. In …

The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders Jan 1962

The Public Career Of Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Miller Saunders

Master's Theses

Although time has obscured his reputation, Robert carter Nicholas exercised considerable influence in pre-Revolutionary Virginia. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington and other familiar revolutionary figures knew him well and respected both his ability and integrity. In fact, Nicholas had already established himself as a power in Virginia politics when the men mentioned above were just stepping onto the stage of Virginia history.

The Role Of The Virginia Slave In Iron And Tobacco Manufacturing, Richard Demone Pulley Jan 1962

The Role Of The Virginia Slave In Iron And Tobacco Manufacturing, Richard Demone Pulley

Master's Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to explore to what extent the Negro slave was used in the iron and tobacco industries in Virginia. These two particular industries were chosen because they were by far the leaders in the employment of slave labor in Virginia. The slave was used in mining but since this is not specifically manufacturing this aspect of slave labor will only be mentioned briefly. Other capacities for slave labor such as blacksmithing and railroad maintenance are also relatively unimportant when compared to the iron and tobacco industries.

The date, 1830. was selected for a starting …

Cabell's Rational Morality As Expressed Through The Dream-Vision Technique In Jurgen, Ruth Macdonald Stevenson Jan 1962

Cabell's Rational Morality As Expressed Through The Dream-Vision Technique In Jurgen, Ruth Macdonald Stevenson

Master's Theses

The various parts of this study deal with various episodes in Jurgen, episodes in which Jurgen progresses from one region to another and from one set of circumstances to another with no very immediately apparent relationship between any two of his adventures. This apparent lack of unity is deceiving. What witness, if we are perceptive, is not an aimless progression to region after region but a series of related allegories, each of which concerns itself with some aspect of reality, the moral values involved therein, and man's "reasonable" adjustment to these realities. The unity of this thesis rests upon the …
