A Survey Of Selected Aspects Of The Practice Of Ecclesiastical Appointment In The New Testament, Early Christian, And Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Gerald T. Du Preez Jan 1994

A Survey Of Selected Aspects Of The Practice Of Ecclesiastical Appointment In The New Testament, Early Christian, And Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Gerald T. Du Preez

Master's Theses

Problem Seventh-day Adventists claim that their doctrines are Bible-based. The question is asked whether the same holds true for their practice of appointing ministers. This study exéunines and compares aspects of ecclesiastical appointment in the New Testament, Early Christian, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Method The New Testament passages pertaining to ecclesiastical appointment were surveyed, incorporating brief exegeses and word studies. Selected writings of the Early Church and the early history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, were also examined. Conclusions The Bible does not appear to present a definitive pattern on the practice of ecclesiastical appointment. The concept of "ordination" …

A Study Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Resettled And Refugee Cambodians, Jolene Malinee Aitken

Master's Theses

Problem

With the onset of the Cambodian holocaust, as well as over 40 years of continual war in Cambodia, the Khmer people have been subjected to an existence of prolonged exposure to disaster, contributing to the alarming prevalence of the mental health disorder of post-traumatic stress among Cambodians today. Post-traumatic stress disorder is the debilitating syndrome described as the development of characteristic symptoms following a psychologically traumatic event that is generally outside the range of usual human experience (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd edition revised, [DSM-III-R], 1987). The purpose of this study was to examine the existence …

Factors In The Selection Of Board Members To 501(C)(3) Human Service Organizations, Robert G. Campbell Jan 1994

Factors In The Selection Of Board Members To 501(C)(3) Human Service Organizations, Robert G. Campbell

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to identify the processes actually used by nonprofit organizations in the selection of board members. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 subjects representing 10 human service nonprofit organizations. The data were analyzed in relation to various research questions. Case studies were written which describe the process of board member selection used by each of the organizations. Elements of these selection processes were formulated into a model of the actual processes applied in board member selection. The actual model was then compared to the prescribed model of selection formulated as a result of information encountered …

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl Aug 1993

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl

Master's Theses

When the Supreme Court ordered integration of public schools in 1954 following Brown vs. Board of Education, Virginia responded with a policy of "massive resistance." Public schools were closed in Prince Edward County between 1959 and 1964. This thesis examines the school closings themselves, but concentrates primarily on the creation, implementation, and effect of the Prince Edward County Free School Association, a privately funded school system that operated during the 1963-1964 school year. Initiated by the Kennedy Administration as a one-year, emergency program, the Free Schools were designed to reestablish formal education for the county's black children. This thesis relied …

F. A. Hayek On The Role Of Reason In Human Affairs, Linda Catherine Raeder Aug 1993

F. A. Hayek On The Role Of Reason In Human Affairs, Linda Catherine Raeder

Master's Theses

This-study examines the views of F. A. Hayek on the role of reason in human affairs. The author explicates certain elements of Hayekian theory that bear on this issue-his views on the nature of mind, rules, law, and cultural evolution-and discusses the characteristics of both the constructivist and critical "kinds of rationalism" Hayek identifies. She then examines the views of various critics who have challenged Hayek's argument. She concludes that, contrary to certain critics, 1) the distinction he draws between constructivist and critical rationalism is meaningful and that the two kinds of rationalism appear to be related to certain political …

Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams May 1993

Reagan And Cutting The Federal Budget : How Consistent Was The Pursuit?, E David Adams

Master's Theses

President Reagan assumed office advocating an economic program based on tax and spending reductions. Achievement of these objectives, Reagan argued, would improve the American economy and result in balanced federal budgets. This thesis examines Reagan's commitment to the spending restraint element of his program. I will analyze all of Reagan's budgets and State of the Union addresses to determine how consistently he sought reductions in federal spending.

Though Reagan's commitment to budget reduction was evident, his selection of means to achieve the cuts was inconsistent. His proposed budget cuts varied in intensity, and Reagan failed to propose consistent reductions in …

An Evaluation Of Hands-On Instruction As A Method To Improve Observation Skills In Second Grade Students, Lydia Rogers May 1993

An Evaluation Of Hands-On Instruction As A Method To Improve Observation Skills In Second Grade Students, Lydia Rogers

Master's Theses

A hands-on assessment tool for testing second-grade students' ability to discriminate physical attributes (size, shape, color, texture, pattern, edge, part-to-whole, and type) of mollusk shells was developed, pretested, and administered to 48 second-grade students at Maybeury Elementary School, Henrico County, Virginia. Treatment group students (n = 24) attended five afterschool, activitybased classes in which close observation of object a~tributes was taught. The classes included the same discriminations as did the assessment test but used different materials. Control and test group students were retested. Neither paired t test nor question-by-question analysis showed a significant improvement in the test group's score. Presence …

Whither Went The Upstairs Gentry? : The Colonial Council Of Virginia From 1763 To 1776, Charles Stephen Weidman Jan 1993

Whither Went The Upstairs Gentry? : The Colonial Council Of Virginia From 1763 To 1776, Charles Stephen Weidman

Master's Theses

Of the three branches of Colonial Virginia government, only two, the House of Burgesses and the Royal Governor, have been well chronicled during the period immediately preceding the American Revolution. The ignored third branch, the Colonial Council, has been largely dismissed by the few historians treating the subject as inconsequential-both as a political institution, and in the influence of its individual members. Witness both the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography and the William and Mary Quarterly, each with over a century dedicated to the nooks and crannies of all history Virginian, have collectively produced but a single article …
