A Talk With Time, Samanatha Kuban
A Talk With Time, Samanatha Kuban
Master's Theses
I chose to write a collection of genre-mixing short stories to depict the vastness and complexity of time as my English Master’s thesis project. Thinking about the constructs of time and how they function or do not function within our society sparked my interest in this field of knowledge and discussion. I am a person that tends to feel a large amount of anxiety surrounding the passage of time or time limits so reading deeper into studies of time and how we think about it in various ways proved to be an outlet for a better understanding. I chose to …
Discourse Analysis In Engineering: Investigating Patterns In Brainstorming Conversations, Aimee Chiem
Discourse Analysis In Engineering: Investigating Patterns In Brainstorming Conversations, Aimee Chiem
Master's Theses
Brainstorming is a critical part of the engineering design process and can have a significant impact on the outcomes of the overall project. While research has studied the outcomes of brainstorming and the ideas that teams generate, the role that language and conversation play in these activities is still relatively underexplored. Observing the different ways people use specific types of discourse can reveal how conversations can affect brainstorming itself. To that end, this research aims to answer the following questions:
1) What are the different kinds of discursive moves that students make during engineering brainstorming activities?
2) What patterns or …

Assessing Stereotype Content And Accuracy Of The Poor: Interpersonal Warmth And Social Competence Dimensions, Shiza Shahid
Master's Theses
The present study assessed (a) the stereotype content of poor people among the poor and the non-poor by using implicit and explicit measures and (b) how these stereotypes map onto actual traits of the poor (i.e., stereotype accuracy). Experiment 1a assessed the stereotype of interpersonal warmth associated with the poor in the non-poor individuals using the Single Category Implicit Association Task (SC-IAT) and stereotype rating questionnaire. Participants also completed the interpersonal warmth inventory. Poor participants completed the SC-IAT, stereotypes ratings, and interpersonal warmth inventory to assess the stereotypes and stereotype accuracy (Experiment 1b). In Experiment 2a, I recruited non-poor participants …

Pre and post questionnaires were given to students who were cast in the show. The data suggested that …
Making It Stick: Exploring Teaching Tools For Choreography Retention In High School Musicals, Katie Arjona
Making It Stick: Exploring Teaching Tools For Choreography Retention In High School Musicals, Katie Arjona
Master's Theses
Dancers often perform pieces that linger in their brains and bodies long after they are danced on stage. For some dancers, the use of unique pieces of music, unusual technical elements, or an emotional connection to the movement has imprinted choreography in the dancer’s body and mind. In preparation for musicals done at the high school level, dancers are often asked to learn choreography to multiple songs within a short span of time and often have little dance training. This creates a unique position for the high school choreographer who will not only have to teach the actors the steps …

Using Behavior Bingo To Increase Academically Engaged Behavior In A General Education Elementary School Population, Faith Elizabeth Hamilton
Master's Theses
Spending instructional and work time addressing disruptive behaviors in the classroom is a common complaint of many teachers. The literature suggests that group contingencies are beneficial for improving behavior on a classwide and individual level. The current study investigated Behavior BINGO, a group contingency intervention whose research is in its infancy, and its effectiveness on increasing academically engaged behaviors and decreasing disruptive behaviors on a classwide basis. This study utilized a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design in three 2nd grade, general education classrooms in a public school.

The Classroom Password Group Contingency With Randomized Reinforcers, Emily Maxime
Master's Theses
From the principles of reinforcement and punishment established by operant conditioning, there have been a variety of different behavior modification methods explored. Group contingencies are one of these behavior modification procedures that can be applied at a class-wide level by teachers who are seeking to improve student behavior as a group or individually. The three types of group contingencies are independent, interdependent, and dependent group contingency. Additional components, such as randomization within a group contingency, have been seen to further the effectiveness of behavioral strategies. A novel independent group contingency that has recently been investigated and demonstrated some promise as …

Guilty As Charged: The Role Of Judge Instructions On Metaphor Produced Biases In Jury Decision Making, Gina N. Rita
Guilty As Charged: The Role Of Judge Instructions On Metaphor Produced Biases In Jury Decision Making, Gina N. Rita
Master's Theses
In this study, we hope to determine if the placement of judge instructions mitigates our previous study’s effect of metaphors on memory and verdict decisions. Our previous study showed in the metaphor condition, participants were more likely to vote guilty and remember more metaphor-related evidence compared to those in the control group. In addition to replicating the previous study’s results, we hypothesize judge instructions stated at the beginning of the trial will have little influence on the metaphor effects, and judge instructions at the end of the trial will weaken these effects. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of …
Feigning Goodness: Considering The Presence And Absence Of Aristotelian Ideas In Character Education Through Thematic Analysis, Mylo Apollo Parker-Emerson
Feigning Goodness: Considering The Presence And Absence Of Aristotelian Ideas In Character Education Through Thematic Analysis, Mylo Apollo Parker-Emerson
Master's Theses
In the past 15+ years in the fields of psychology, philosophy, education, and at a federal level within the U.S. Department of Education, there has been a push to incorporate social emotional learning in schools, namely through character education (Berkowitz, 2021; Federal Commission on School Safety, 2018; Hatchimonji et al., 2020; Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, 2022). Character education as an educational reform works to accomplish the functions of education through a focus on building good character, sometimes categorized as soft skills. Many schools have incorporated curriculums of character education to provide a more holistic education. Through the many …
The Unhappy Specter: The Buried Remains Of Self And Other, Kirt Henry Broesche
The Unhappy Specter: The Buried Remains Of Self And Other, Kirt Henry Broesche
Master's Theses
In this paper, we argue that Derrida’s account of the uncanny experience of being haunted by a specter reveals consciousness to be constitutively haunted. From Derrida’s account in Specters of Marx, we locate the cause to the possibility of haunting from the inability to complete a so-called work of mourning. We note primarily the development of Derrida’s account of specters with respect to the psychoanalytic distinction between mourning and melancholia. We go on to compare Derrida’s characterization of a haunted subject to Hegel’s conception of Unhappy Consciousness to discuss the possibility for a haunted consciousness to be assimilated into a …
Cell Membrane Lipid Alterations In Blood Plasma At Pre-Conception And During Pregnancy Are Associated With Gestational Diabetes Development, Jennifer J. Luevano
Cell Membrane Lipid Alterations In Blood Plasma At Pre-Conception And During Pregnancy Are Associated With Gestational Diabetes Development, Jennifer J. Luevano
Master's Theses
Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a metabolic disorder that has been defined as glucose intolerance that is first identified during pregnancy. The etiology of GDM is not yet fully understood, but there are several risk factors that appear to contribute to its development such as advanced age at pregnancy, family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and a previous history of GDM. The discovery of predictive GDM biomarkers has the potential to enable early GDM detection and lead to earlier diagnosis and preventative interventions.
Objective: Perform metabolomics analysis on plasma samples collected at pre-conception and at 26-weeks gestation to …
An Examination Of School Resource Officers' Self-Perception Of Role, Student Encounters And Duties, Alexandra Swanty
An Examination Of School Resource Officers' Self-Perception Of Role, Student Encounters And Duties, Alexandra Swanty
Master's Theses
As the rates of school shootings and school violence rise, the effectiveness of school resource officers (SROs) has come into question. As of now, there is no nationwide standard for the role and duties of school resource officers. Therefore, these differ from state to state and even school district to school district. One variable that had yet to be examined was the impact that location has on the roles of school resource officers. From this, three different school resource officer roles were identified: teaching-based role, community-based role, and law enforcement-based role. To determine the relationship between these variables, an online …
Comparing Effects Of Praise Rates On Classroom Behavior, Brittany Pigg
Comparing Effects Of Praise Rates On Classroom Behavior, Brittany Pigg
Master's Theses
High-quality academic instruction, and, in turn, student success, are correlated with effective classroom management (Gage, Scott, Hirn, & MacSuga-Gage, 2018; Johnson, 1997; Stronge, Ward, & Grant, 2011; Wang, Haertel, & Walberg, 1993). Students are spending up to 50% of their instructional time engaged in non-instructional activities such as classroom procedures, transitions, and discipline (Codding & Smyth, 2008). However, academic activities should account for at least 70% of classroom time (Little & Akin-Little, 2008). Praise, a simple classroom behavior management procedure, includes statements commending behavior and is intended to increase the future probability of the behavior that warranted praise. Behavior-specific praise …
Restrictions And Criteria For Obtaining Funds After A Victimization: A Content Analysis Of Victim Compensation Statutes In The United States, Taylor Brake
Master's Theses
Of the lasting effects after a victimization, a common denominator is the cost of services needed to heal from the harm caused. Since 2002, all states and territories in the United States have fully developed victim compensation programs to provide aid to victims in combating the financial impacts after a crime. The Victims of Crime Act and the Office for Victims of Crime have created requirements and suggestions for states to follow within their compensation programs. Unfortunately, there is no federal authority enforcing these requirements or ensuring consistency in state statutes surrounding victim compensation. Although there are multiple rationales as …
Animal Abuse And Psychopathy: Examining Psychopathic Personality Traits In Both Animal Abusers And Non-Abusers, Allison Renegar
Animal Abuse And Psychopathy: Examining Psychopathic Personality Traits In Both Animal Abusers And Non-Abusers, Allison Renegar
Master's Theses
Despite the soaring popularity of household pets in America, very little thought is given about the rights of our domesticated animals to exist free from harm and abuse. Little research has been done concerning animal abuse as most studies measured animal abuse dichotomously, providing essentially no contextual information. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychopathy and animal abuse using the Psychopathic Personality Traits Scale (PPTS; Boduszek et al., 2016) and the Boat Inventory on Animal-Related Experiences (Boat Inventory; Boat, 1994) while accounting for other factors including what types of animals are abused and the methods …
The Mental Health Of Lgbtq+ Graduate Students: Examining The Role Of Lifestyle Factors, Lindsey Ostermiller
The Mental Health Of Lgbtq+ Graduate Students: Examining The Role Of Lifestyle Factors, Lindsey Ostermiller
Master's Theses
The are many well-documented disparities among LGBTQ+ individuals and a rising concern about mental health in higher education, as LGBTQ+ graduate students may face unique and specific vulnerabilities in relation to their overall health compared to their peers. Part of what might be driving the mental health crisis among LGBTQ+ graduate students are poorer lifestyle factors. There is limited research that examines the impact of health-related lifestyle factors on mental health among LGBTQ+ graduate students, exacerbating our lack of insight into specific problems that may affect LGBTQ+ individuals’ mental health. As such, the present study examined mental health in LGBTQ+ …
Characterization And Estimation Of Musculoskeletal Pain Using Machine Learning, Boluwatife Faremi
Characterization And Estimation Of Musculoskeletal Pain Using Machine Learning, Boluwatife Faremi
Master's Theses
Traditional scales utilized for recording pain are known to be highly subjective and biased due to inaccuracies in recollecting actual pain intensities. As a result, machine learning (ML) models that are trained using these scores as ground truth are reported to have low performance for objective pain classification because of the huge disparity between what was felt in moments of pain and the scores recorded afterward.
In the present study, two devices were designed for gathering real-time, continuous in-session subjective pain scores and the recording of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) altered endodermal (EDA) activity. 24 participants were recruited to …

Social Anxiety And Relational Aggression In The Peer Relationships Of College Women, Summer Boggs
Social Anxiety And Relational Aggression In The Peer Relationships Of College Women, Summer Boggs
Master's Theses
Relational aggression (i.e., a type of aggression in which the aggressor harms others by damaging their relationships, reputation, and/or feelings of social acceptance) is common among emerging adults and has been linked to several adverse correlates. Research on relational aggression among college students has found some evidence that it is positively associated with social anxiety; however, the specific components of social anxiety and the possible mechanisms through which this relationship may operate are unclear. The current study examined the relationship between social anxiety and relational aggression among college women (N = 292), focusing on fear of negative evaluation (FNE) …
A Minor Place: A Short Story Collection, Nathaniel Pyle
A Minor Place: A Short Story Collection, Nathaniel Pyle
Master's Theses
In this collection, characters often face interior struggles such as past lives, abusive upbringings, dead partners, and relationship struggles. A Minor Place concerns loneliness and existentialism set with a melancholy, southern gothic setting. Characters toil with their psychological state within a shared and collective universe of the unknown. The characters found within A Minor Place deal with sensitive issues such as loss, isolation, and overcoming their difficulties. A Minor Place implements narratives to showcase a "minor” tonality and coloration and style to accompany this titular minor place.
Suppression Of National Identities: Ukrainian And Baltic Cultures In The Soviet Union, Jonathan H. Mastman
Suppression Of National Identities: Ukrainian And Baltic Cultures In The Soviet Union, Jonathan H. Mastman
Master's Theses
This thesis defines the formation and consummation of Soviet Bolshevism as another imperialist force rather than its stated objective of freeing the people of the United Soviet Socialist Republics from the clutches of an inequitable elite. Through the policies and objectives of the Soviet government the workers and citizens of Ukraine and the Baltic republics were not liberated or given autonomy over their lives and labor, as Marxist-Leninism would have them believe. I review the Russification efforts found first in the Tsarist Russian Empire and then continued by Soviets in the nature of pursuing or denying cultural, political, and economic …
Reconstructing Identity: Carlton Burgan, Patient Zero In The Development Of Plastic Surgery, Civil War Through World War I, Teresa M. George
Reconstructing Identity: Carlton Burgan, Patient Zero In The Development Of Plastic Surgery, Civil War Through World War I, Teresa M. George
Master's Theses
Plastic surgery has played an integral role in helping people achieve societal expectations of appropriate physical appearance since its inception. Through the story of Carlton Burgan, a Union soldier during the American Civil War, who suffered severe facial trauma by mercury poisoning, this thesis hopes to reconstruct the conversation around plastic surgery’s origins as it is influenced by societal standards of the day. Specifically, this thesis argues that the seminal moments leading to plastic surgery being seen as a worthwhile medical specialty was during the Civil War, not World War I as so many scholars have put forth. Violent acts …
Impact Of Long-Term Trauma Exposure On Competitiveness And Generosity, Anchal Khandelwal
Impact Of Long-Term Trauma Exposure On Competitiveness And Generosity, Anchal Khandelwal
Master's Theses
: Although half of all nations in the world have experienced armed conflict in the last 50 years, there is still a glaring lack of evidence on the persistent human costs of these conflicts. We exploit the quasi-random variation in abduction (Blattman and Annan 2009) and establish a control (neighboring) sub-county based on the intensity of exposure by the Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda to investigate the long-term impact of trauma exposure on competitiveness and generosity. We do this by conducting lab-in-field experiments on a sample of adult North Ugandan women and find that trauma exposure reduces competitiveness in …
