The Effects Of A Nerve Growth-Promoting Protein On The Integument Of Pet Mice, Craig Bauman Satterlee Jun 1967

The Effects Of A Nerve Growth-Promoting Protein On The Integument Of Pet Mice, Craig Bauman Satterlee

Master's Theses

A factor which specifically stimulates the growth of sensory and sympathetic nerve cells has been under investigation for a number of years. This factor, originally isolated in 1951, from mouse sarcomas 37 and 180, was named the "nerve growth factor". Its action was first shown in vivo by inoculating the sarcoma into chick embryos and subsequently in vitro by culturing chick ganglia and mouse sarcoma together. In the years immediately following the initial discovery, much more potent sources of NGF were found in the salivary glands and salivary secretions of a variety of species. These include rattle snake venom, and …

Interference Of Ultraviolet Inactivated Parainfluenza 3 And Echo 21 Viruses With The Active Viruses In Tissue Culture, William Ernest Steinmetz Jan 1967

Interference Of Ultraviolet Inactivated Parainfluenza 3 And Echo 21 Viruses With The Active Viruses In Tissue Culture, William Ernest Steinmetz

Master's Theses

Experiments were conducted to investigate the possibility of the production of interference by ultraviolet inactivated (UVI) Parainfluenza 3 (Para 3) and Echo 21 viruses with active Para 3 and Echo 21 viruses in tissue culture (TC).

Four major experiments were conducted: the effect of UVI Para ~ on active Para 3 in rhesus monkey kidney cell (MKC) tissue culture; the effect of UVI Para 3 on active Para 3 in HEp-2 TC; the effect of UVI Para 3 on Echo 21 in MKC TC; and the effect of UV! Echo 21 on Echo 21 in MKC TC. The rates of …

The Effect Of Aging On Ratings Of Self, Physical Self And Related Body Concepts As Measured By A Semantic Differential, Gary V. Whalen Jan 1966

The Effect Of Aging On Ratings Of Self, Physical Self And Related Body Concepts As Measured By A Semantic Differential, Gary V. Whalen

Master's Theses

Present Study. Although there is considerable overlap between the body image and the self concept, it would be premature to draw any conclusions regarding one based upon the other until the nature and extent of correlation is obtained. This study is an attempt to determine the extent and direction that an individual's body image may fluctuate as a function of growing old. It is concerned with how the human organism may change over time with respect to a single aspect of the constellations of factors that go into making up a person's self concept. More specifically, do body part ratings …

An Analysis Of The Activities Under Public Law 480 : The Food For Peace Program, Charles Frederick Bateman

Master's Theses

It has been my purpose in this research to unveil a clear picture of the historical activities of our Food For Peace Program, commonly know as Public Law 480, with the hope of' being able to establish a basis for .future understanding. I have examined certain problems arising in both normal and abnormal situations in the activities under Public Law 480, and have presented views as to how they might be corrected or avoided.

Some Factors Involved In Growth And Sporulation Of Pilobolus Crystallinus Tode And Pilobolus Umbonatus Buller, Kenneth L. Poff Jun 1964

Some Factors Involved In Growth And Sporulation Of Pilobolus Crystallinus Tode And Pilobolus Umbonatus Buller, Kenneth L. Poff

Master's Theses

Pilobolus umbonatus Buller and P. crystallinus Tode grew normally in a nitrogen atmosphere but their sporagnia were non-pigmented. When palced in anaerobic jars along with obligately anaerobic and obligately aerobic bacteria, the fungi grew in the range of oxygen concentrations too low for growth of the aerobic bacterium, but high enough to prevent growth of the anaerobe. The fungi did not grow when the oxygen was depleted to the point that allowed growth of the anaerobic bacterium. Catalase was not produced by the hyphae and trophocysts which normally grow beneath the surface of the medium, but was present in the …

A Study Of The Physical Fitness Program In The Albert H. Hill School, Thomas Costas Stavredes Jan 1963

A Study Of The Physical Fitness Program In The Albert H. Hill School, Thomas Costas Stavredes

Master's Theses

Throughout the years the story of man's development has been one of long continuous change. Thousands of years ago primitive man lived without the use of fire, tools or language. Gathering his food and other necessities, he was at the mercy of the cold, the wind, the rain and other dangers harmful to his existence. This individual came to realize that in order to survive he had to be fit--fit in the sense of meeting successfully any situation of hardship or danger as well as any other experience harmful to his existence. To him fitness was necessary for survival.

Some Effects Of Ph, Temperature And Light On The Production Of Zoosporagia In Saprolegnia Parasitica Coker, Philip C. Lee Jul 1962

Some Effects Of Ph, Temperature And Light On The Production Of Zoosporagia In Saprolegnia Parasitica Coker, Philip C. Lee

Master's Theses

Pure cultures of Saprolegnia parasitica Coker were grown under varied conditions of temperature, pH, and light conditions. In liquid medium colonies were spherical with a zonal effect in the distribution of zoosporangia.

Near the limiting extremes of pH and temperature, beaded hyphal tips were found in place of normal sporangia. Teorell Universal buffer in the sporulation water inhibited production of sporangia. The pH minimum was 4.0 - 4.1, optimum 6.3 - 7.4, and maximum 8.o - 8.3. The maximum number of sporangia was produced at 15 C. Between 3.4 and 5 C , a delay in sporulation was noted and …
