This study investigates the role of interpersonal communication in faculty and staff mentorship and its impact on undergraduate student retention, focusing on struggling students at Louisiana Tech University. With a national retention rate of 68.2% and persistent disparities among underrepresented groups, improving student retention remains a critical issue in higher education. The research addresses a gap in understanding how communication practices, such as active listening, empathy, and constructive feedback, influence mentorship effectiveness. Assessing Arterial Compliance: Utilizing A Surrogate Arm Bench Top Model For Oscillometric Blood Pressure Monitoring, Krystal Cardenas

A study was conducted to evaluate the compliance of artificial artery systems utilizing an adaptation of the Yong-Geddes Surrogate Arm model, composed of a blood pressure cuff, artificial artery, pressure transducers, and flow to replicate physiological conditions to validate oscillometric non-invasive blood pressure measurement methods. The experiment phases included tube, blood pressure cuff, and the surrogate arm compliance tests both in static and dynamic conditions. Tube compliance tests showed that larger diameters resulted in increased compliance, with Sample 1 (smaller inner diameter, ID) resulting in an average compliance of 0.0912 mL/mmHg, and Sample 2 (bigger ID) resulting in 0.1597 mL/mmHg. …

In eukaryotes, microtubules (MTs) are regulated by microtubule-associated proteins (MAP), only a few of which have been characterized in the malaria parasite to date. Here we present the functional characterization of STOP axonemal protein 1 (SAXO1) of the rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei. The protein exhibits high sequence and organizational conservation to the subpellicular microtubule protein 1 (SPM1) of the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii and SAXO1 of Trypanosoma brucei. SAXO1 proteins are conserved in most eukaryotes where they form a protein family. We refer to this protein as PbSPM1. It is a 38 kD protein that is organized into an N-terminal …

Racial and ethnic identity formation is associated with psychological well-being and this is especially true for youth of color, including Black adolescents. Currently, there is a dearth of literature examining influences on this facet of identity during adolescents, outside of parental socialization and school-related factors. Participation in organized out-of-school activities has been associated with positive outcomes, such as social and emotional well-being, which, in turn, is related to identity formation. Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy which results in blindness for many patients, even with treatment. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a vasoactive peptide known to be aberrantly upregulated in the eyes of individuals with glaucoma. Optic nerve head astrocytes (ONHA) are the resident glial cell of the optic nerve head and are among the first cell types to undergo changes to a reactive phenotype. While modern retinoblastoma treatments in developed countries have significantly reduced mortality rates, post-treatment consequences such as vision loss, off-site organ dysfunction, and secondary metastases remain unmet clinical needs. P38alpha is a member of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) family. This family is important for mediating signal transduction pathways through phosphorylation of downstream substrates. Previous work has described the ability of p38alpha to bind and phosphorylate nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) at two sites, the autoinhibitory loop (AI) at S600 and the N-terminal MAPK binding site (NtMAP) at S114. P38alpha has two substrate binding domains, the common docking groove (CD-groove) and a hydrophobic pocket (DEF) that are important in binding and phosphorylating various substrates specific to each pocket. Over the centuries, the Bible has been reproduced in various forms, from scrolls to codex, handwritten codex to printed books, and, more recently, the digital Bible. However, proprietary software tools lack in providing a more rigorous approach to advanced research in data-driven linguistic and exegetical studies.

I report the final implementation of a data conversion project to convert an existing open source Nestle 1904 Greek New Testament encoded in XML format through Text-Fabric software (N1904-TF). Cyberbullying poses a significant threat to online communities, with the LGBTQ+ community facing disproportionately higher rates of harassment. While existing cyberbullying detection systems have made progress in identifying general instances of online harassment, they often fail to capture the nuanced and context-dependent nature of LGBTQ+-targeted bullying. This thesis presents a novel approach to this challenge by developing SpectrumNet, an LGBTQ+-centric transformer-based model for cyberbullying detection. Our research was conducted in two phases. In Phase 1, we evaluated the effectiveness of pre-trained transformer models (RoBERTa, BERT, and GPT-2) in identifying LGBTQ+-related cyberbullying. Dams have many effects on stream morphology and ecology, including a loss of sediment supply downstream, reduced access to the entire stream for aquatic fauna, and a flooded area upstream of the dam. Dams are a hurdle for migrating organisms such as anadromous fish, which is a group of concern. An over 100-year-old dam on Mill Creek, a stream draining a coastal watershed in central California, was removed in the fall of 2021. There is a need to develop novel and effective therapies targeting end-stage peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Inducing collateral arteriogenesis is a possible novel treatment that produces a natural bypass for blood flow, a promising solution to the long-term issues seen with current treatments. Regenerative therapies, and progenitor cells specifically, have demonstrated great promise in repair after injury and disease. While most progenitor or stem cells have poor efficacy in this context, muscle progenitor cells, or myoblasts, have encouraging results.
