A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds
A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds
Master's Theses
The object of this project was to isolate, separate, and identify the polyphenols in tobacco. Following this, the aim was to develop a method for the quantitative determination of the major polyphenols in tobacco.
Existing methods for the determination of polyphenols in tobacco involve lengthy procedures which are concerned with one or two of the polyphenols rather than the· complete class of compounds. The methods consist of exhaustive extraction procedures, lengthy chromatographic procedures and numerous methods of identification.
Extensive research on the determination of polyphenols by chromatography has been carried out in the field of tobacco and in other fields. …
The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon
The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon
Master's Theses
Important theoretical and experimental developments in the field of electrocrystallization on single crystals are briefly reviewed and new data presented. The deposition of nickel from a Watts-type bath onto electrolytically polished mono crystals of copper is the system chosen for study. Various aspects of the structural changes in the deposit with increasing thickness are considered. The electron microscope is the main tool employed and the deposit is studied by detaching it from the basis metal as well as by the use of surface replicas. Short backgrounds in crystallography and electron microscopy are included.
Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley
Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley
Master's Theses
The normal spectral emittance at 0. 65 microns of elemental boron specimens was measured at incandescent temperatures by the hollow-tube method, This was made possible by depositing boron onto thin-walled hollow tubes of graphite and molybdenum. An approximate value of the total hemispherical emittance for boron was also obtained. The deposition of boron was accomplished by chemical vapor plating with boron tribromide and hydrogen. The boron produced was characterized in several ways.

Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill
Four Dimensional Graphs Of Complex Functions, Malcom Lee Murrill
Master's Theses
Complex functions of a single complex variable involve four unknowns, two independent and two dependent variables, and thus cannot be adequately represented in two- or three- dimensional space. Various geometric constructions in both two and three dimensions have been devised in the past, however, in attempts to illuminate complex function theory. The standard and most useful, of these representations is that developed by Gauss and Riemann employing two complex planes simultanesously. These show the correspondence between a particular curve or region in the object plane and its image, as mapped by a given transformation, in the image plane.
A Survey Of The Graduating Classes Of Varina High School (1954-1958) To Determine Their Reactions To Certain Phases Of The School Program, Jerome Michael Adams
A Survey Of The Graduating Classes Of Varina High School (1954-1958) To Determine Their Reactions To Certain Phases Of The School Program, Jerome Michael Adams
Master's Theses
The problem of this thesis is to survey a cross section of Varina High School graduates of the past five years (1954-1958) for the purpose of determining the extent to which the school program has proven effective in preparing them for. their respective places in life.
The purpose of the study is (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of the total school program in preparing students to live worthwhile and success full lives after graduation; (2) to determine the extent to which these graduate students were aided by the guidance facilities of the school and, (3) to utilize this information in …
Substituted Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorides, Lawrence Donald Hanback
Substituted Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorides, Lawrence Donald Hanback
Master's Theses
The work in this thesis is a continuation of a project started at the University of Richmond in 1952 by A. G. Richardson under the directorship of Dr. J. S. Pierce and Dr. George z.Williams, Director of Clinical Pathology, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
The purpose of the research was to prepare triphenyl tetrazolium salts, substituted, particularly in the ortho and para positions, with various electron accepting and electron donating groups. It was hoped that these substitutions would impart enough differences in the properties of the compounds so as to allow d etection of certain biological reactions. The tetrazolium …
A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards
A History Of The Danville Military Institute, Robert Erle Edwards
Master's Theses
As the years roll by, primary sources of historical data are either lost or destroyed. This unfortunate fact has held true in the case of the Danville Military Institute. A number of good pieces of original data have disappeared since the school closed. In order to take advantage of available material before it is lost, this study of the Danville Military Institute was made. This is the first intensive study of the school, which was a credit to its city, its state, and its nation.

Spectrophotometric Study Of The Boron- Curcumin System, Frank Xavier Pollio
Master's Theses
In the present research project an attempt has been made to determine the mechanism of the reaction followed in the curcumin spectrophotometric method for boron determination using a modification of Naf'tel's method.
Spectrophotometric Study Of The Boron-Curcumin System, Frank Xavier Polio
Spectrophotometric Study Of The Boron-Curcumin System, Frank Xavier Polio
Master's Theses
With mechanism and structure in mind, the aim of this research project was to investigate the role played by the various reagents used in the curcumin spectrophotometric method. The reagents were used in varied concentrations and at times some eliminated entirely, in the hope that a greater understanding be gained in the overall mechanism followed by the reaction.
One of the major objectives was to try to determine the structure of the colored substance formed in the reaction. A step towards this goal was gained by obtaining molar ratios of the entities suspected to be an intricate part of the …

This study is composed from past events in the hopes of learning from previous experience in order to create further developments in high schools.
A Study Of The State Teachers' Scholarship Program In Virginia, Nora Jones Culpeper
A Study Of The State Teachers' Scholarship Program In Virginia, Nora Jones Culpeper
Master's Theses
A State Teachers Scholarship Program was inaugurated in Virginia in 1947. The program, based on appropriations made by the General Assembly of Virginia for each biennium, has been in continuous operation for eleven years. It provides financial assistance in the form of scholarship grants for in-service teachers and for individuals who are preparing to enter the teaching profession.
The State Teachers' Scholarship Program, designed to foster the cause of education in Virginia, should be appraised in terms or its effectiveness. It is a recognized fact that any service which has been in operation for a period of time should be evaluated …

A History Of The Richmond Public School System, 1869-1958, Rebekah Roberts Sharp
Master's Theses
Histories of Richmond and Virginia devote listed space to the Richmond Public Schools. Little additional information is given in the histories of education. From scattered sources the development of the Richmond Public School System has been traced from its inauguration in 1869 to the present (1958).
Automation In Accounting Through Electronic Data Processing, John Edward Traylor
Automation In Accounting Through Electronic Data Processing, John Edward Traylor
Master's Theses
Similar to the Industrial Revolution with its impact on factory management during the early nineteen hundreds is the electronical means of processing data to the office. This new era in office and accounting procedure has opened the door to many new systems in the processing of paper. For the first time in the history of man we are able to do these things:
1. Present timely reports to management of large-scale operations.
2. Eliminate present manual and machine methods with their undesirable elements of inaccuracy.
3. Eliminate the necessity of writing down an element of information more than once.
4. …
