The History Of The Adventist Interpretation Of The "Daily" In The Book Of Daniel From 1831 To 2008, Denis Kaiser Jan 2009

The History Of The Adventist Interpretation Of The "Daily" In The Book Of Daniel From 1831 To 2008, Denis Kaiser

Master's Theses

During the more than 160 years since Adventism's inception, the interpretation of the tamid or "daily" in the book of Daniel underwent several changes with respect to the argumentation, as well as the way differing views are handled. This study analyzes various Millerite and Adventist interpretations of the tamid in Dan 8 between 1831 and 2008 focusing especially on the approach to the biblical text, the argumentation, and the atmosphere during the time of conflict (1900 - 1930), as well as on Ellen White's counsels during the period, puzzling statement, and possible explanations. This documentary study was based primarily on …

The Troubled Intersection Of The Interests Of Christ And Commerce : Appellate-Court Review Of Virginia Sunday Closing Laws In Historical Overview Through 1942, William Robert Vanderkloot Jan 2005

The Troubled Intersection Of The Interests Of Christ And Commerce : Appellate-Court Review Of Virginia Sunday Closing Laws In Historical Overview Through 1942, William Robert Vanderkloot

Master's Theses

Virginia's Supreme Court of Appeals, between 1900 and the conclusion of this thesis in 1942, consistently narrowed Virginia's Sunday closing law, enacted in 1786 to prevent Sunday labor. While paying lip service to the statute's purpose, the court almost unhesitatingly chose statutory interpretations encouraging more Sunday labor, particularly by expanding its ''necessity" and "charity" exceptions. The legislature also granted additional statutory closing law exceptions. This reflected the preferences of the public as well, which increasingly depended on the services of others laboring on Sunday. These results were also due, in part, to inherent confusions and contradictions in the law itself, …

United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson Aug 1998

United States - Indonesian Relations, 1945-1949: Negative Consequences Of Early American Cold War Policy, Robert Earl Patterson

Master's Theses

From 1945 to 1949, Indonesian nationalists struggled for independence against their Dutch colonial rulers. For most of the period, American foreign policy favored the Netherlands in its desire to reign once again over the archipelago. American foreign policy strategy advocated a "Europe first" position, and possessed finite resources to contain Soviet expansion in the developing cold war. State Department policy planners sided with European powers as they attempted to resume the status quo ante in Southeast Asia following World War II. Colonies were considered essential to the recoveries of Western European powers economically, politically, and psychologically.

Britain And The French Resistance 1940-1942 : A False Start, Laurie West Van Hook Jan 1997

Britain And The French Resistance 1940-1942 : A False Start, Laurie West Van Hook

Master's Theses

During the Second World War, the French Resistance failed to unify or work effectively with Charles de Gaulle, the movement's symbolic leader. The Resistance maintained a troublesome relations with Great Britain. Neither side overcame a series of conflicts, battling egos, and internal confusion. As a result, Britain and the Resistance never developed a mature relationship that could aid the Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942 (Torch) and Normandy in June 1955 (Overlord). The British lacked a unified policy toward the French Resistance. Acting out a sense of desperation and isolation, the British clung …

Congressional Battles With Franklin D. Roosevelt Over Vetoes Of Veterans' Compensation, 1933-36, Valiant J. Heyer

Master's Theses

This thesis offers the first historical study specifically focusing on Franklin Roosevelt's battles with Congress over veterans' care and compensation from 1933 to 1936. The historical problem addressed in this thesis is, why did the New Deal congresses, with overwhelming Democratic majorities, rise in opposition to Roosevelt's policies and push for passage of veteran benefit programs that were known to be unacceptable to their President? Although most historians explain away the veterans' issue by attributing congressional efforts to pay the "bonus" to simple election-year pressure, this thesis provides a markedly different conclusion. Based on the Congressional Record, manuscript collections …

An Investigation To Determine Ellen White's Concepts Of Revelation, Inspiration, "The Spirit Of Prophecy," And Her Claims About The Origin, Production And Authority Of Her Writings, James H. Burry Jan 1991

An Investigation To Determine Ellen White's Concepts Of Revelation, Inspiration, "The Spirit Of Prophecy," And Her Claims About The Origin, Production And Authority Of Her Writings, James H. Burry

Master's Theses

Problem Questions persist about the authority and role of the writings of Ellen White in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Since the church accepts her as a prophet, this study seeks to determine Ellen White's concepts involving the processes of revelation, inspiration and the usage of the phrase "spirit of prophecy." Her claims about the origin and authority of her writings then help to determine a more consistent usage for the spirit of prophecy. Method A descriptive systematic approach begins with computer CD-ROM word studies on Ellen White's concepts of revelation, inspiration and the phrase "spirit of prophecy." After determining these …

Inerrancy And Sovereignty: A Case Study On Carl F. H. Henry, Joseph Karanja Jan 1990

Inerrancy And Sovereignty: A Case Study On Carl F. H. Henry, Joseph Karanja

Master's Theses

Problem This study examines how the concept of inerrancy of Scripture presupposes a particular understanding of divine sovereignty. Investigation is based on the writings of Carl F. H. Henry, a contemporary American evangelical theologian. Method This investigation uses case—study approach. It consists of a descriptive analysis of Carl Henry's concepts of inerrancy and sovereignty as individual concepts and the sense in which the former presupposes the latter. General inferences are based on that analysis. Results This study shows that Henry's concept of sovereignty is an indispensable presupposition in his concept of inerrancy. Among other things, sovereignty denotes Gad's absolute causality, …

Milton's Eve : A Comparison With Eve In The Major Analogues Preceding Paradise Lost, Charlene Dellinger Wheeler Jan 1974

Milton's Eve : A Comparison With Eve In The Major Analogues Preceding Paradise Lost, Charlene Dellinger Wheeler

Master's Theses

Milton's character of Eve in Paradise Lost has been interpreted by critics as both the vehicle for Milton's abuse of women, and the example of Milton's favoritism towards them. The great variety of interpretations of the same character seems to be the result of not considering Milton's Eve as a combination of qualities gathered from both the Biblical and literary traditions and influenced by Milton's theological beliefs and his intentions for Paradise Lost. By comparing Milton's Eve with her major predecessors, this thesis will interpret Milton's characterization according to the literary history of the character, and show how Milton's particular …

A Historical Study Of The Role Of The Industrialist In The Tobacco, Flour And Textile Industries Of Virginia 1860-1890, Leslie Winston Smith

Master's Theses

The primary objective of this study is to ascertain what part, if any, the prominent industrialists of Virginia, in the postwar-pretwentieth century period, played in the economic rejuvenation of a state that was ravaged for four years by invaders and defenders alike. Cognizant of the fact that Virginia industry after 1865 was attending a degree of diversification, nonetheless, this study will be limited to three primary industries, namely tobacco, flour and textiles. Even though these three industries, with the possible exception of textiles, were found in most towns and cities throughout the state, only four cities have been selected for …

A Historical Study Of The Missionary Work Of Dr. George W. Butler And An Analysis Of His Influence On Brazil, David Gueiros Vieira

Master's Theses

In August of 1954,many people were astonished to read that the new president of Brazil, Cafe Filho, was a Protestant. When this occurred, it was scarcely known outside of Brazil that the influence o.f the Protestants there is greatly out of proportion to their numbers.

It would be an almost impossible task to try to trace from the United States, the development of the whole Protestant movement in Brazil. Therefore, this writer has limited the scope or this paper to a scant survey of the beginning of the Protestant missionary work in Brazil, and more particularly to a thorough study …
