Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz
Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz
Master's Theses
The objective of this thesis is to develop a biological wastewater treatment system that utilizes algal growth to simultaneously create renewable energy in the form of biodiesel and digester biogas, remove polluting nutrients, and abate greenhouse gases. Research under the Department of Energy Aquatic Species Program during 1978-1996 concluded that cultivating algae for biofuels was cost prohibitive at that time and that an integrated approach should be studied that combined wastewater treatment with algal biofuel production. Nutrient removal, in particular nitrogen and phosphorus, from wastewater is a growing regulatory need and the use of algae cultivation could create a unique …

Quality Of Life For Patients And Caregivers: Palliative Care Funding Opportunities, Edward Joseph Schaub
Quality Of Life For Patients And Caregivers: Palliative Care Funding Opportunities, Edward Joseph Schaub
Master's Theses
Development of the field of palliative care, which was nourished through extensive private foundation funding over more than a decade, has to some extent been stalled because of sharply reduced private funding, a lack of understanding by the general population, and the inaction of major institutions.
This study investigated the current state of palliative care funding efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area (the "Bay Area") and across the U.S. The individuals that participated in the research component of this study included palliative care experts and palliative care funders. Through two separate surveys and two interview groups their perceptions and …
A Study Of On-Site Employee Health Care Clinics And Their Possible Return On Investment, Dale William Carter Jr.
A Study Of On-Site Employee Health Care Clinics And Their Possible Return On Investment, Dale William Carter Jr.
Master's Theses
Health care costs have accelerated at alarming rates for the last decade, outpacing wage growth and inflation according to The Kaiser Family Foundation... These costs have an impact on everyone. Since 2000, premiums have grown by 73 percent, yet wages have only grown by 15 percent (The Kaiser Family Foundation, 2005)... One alternative being evaluated by organizations is the on-site employee health clinic or OSHEC. The in-house doctor is not a new concept; however, the new approach is more comprehensive, delivering a myriad of services to employees beyond treatment of workplace injuries. The OSHEC has emerged as a more holistic …

An Anecdotal Examination Of Wellness Programs, Sean M. Greenway
Master's Theses
This research investigates the question whether or not Wellness Programs are available to police officers throughout Virginia. Research has shown these programs to be beneficial in reducing the health risks associated with police work. Police departments may also see a decrease in sick leave and work related injuries. In order to address the research question, a questionnaire was distributed to 150 police departments throughout Virginia. A total of 57.7 percent of the departments reported the availability of a voluntary Wellness Program. Based on a lack of data, the findings suggest that the departments are not evaluating the effectiveness of their …

Recruitment And Retention Challenges For Law Enforcement Agencies : Identifying The Reasons For High Turnover Rates Of New Recruits, Scott A. Kearns
Recruitment And Retention Challenges For Law Enforcement Agencies : Identifying The Reasons For High Turnover Rates Of New Recruits, Scott A. Kearns
Master's Theses
The problem addressed in this study is the challenge to police agencies to
recruit and retain police officers. The Prince William County Police Department
(PWCPD) has experienced the challenges of filling sworn positions as we
continue to sustain our fully authorized staffing levels. This is a phenomenon
many agencies across the nation are experiencing. A survey was used to identify
the reasons for selecting the PWCPD for employment and what can be done to
retain employees to ensure a positive return-on-investment. A multi-step process
was followed in creating, distributing and analyzing the survey. Results lead to
the following conclusions: knowing …
Stressors On The Detectives Of The Prince William County Police Department, William P. Mackay
Stressors On The Detectives Of The Prince William County Police Department, William P. Mackay
Master's Theses
Law enforcement is a highly stressful occupation, with law enforcement officials facing critical incidents such as violent crime scenes and potential loss of life. These incidents, however, are not a daily occurrence. The most common daily stressors associated with law enforcement originate from the law enforcement organization itself, the daily interactions with coworkers, the usage or misusage of the assigned equipment, and the individual's perception of the work environment. This study collected survey data to analyze the prevalence and effects of the daily stressors perceived by the detectives of the Prince William County Police Department. This study identified three areas …
Generational Competence And Retention : A Study Of Different Generations In Law Enforcement And How These Differences Impact Retention In The Chesterfield County Police Department, Gary Scott Edwards
Generational Competence And Retention : A Study Of Different Generations In Law Enforcement And How These Differences Impact Retention In The Chesterfield County Police Department, Gary Scott Edwards
Master's Theses
There are currently four distinct generations in today's workforce (Veterans, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials). This presents unique challenges for employers since each of these generations is affected and shaped by different events in their lives, which define the values they bring to work. These differences can be increasingly difficult to manage and may lead to conflicts. Significant research has been conducted in this area, but little has focused on public sector employees, specifically sworn law enforcement officers. This research examines whether generational differences observed in society as a whole are the same as those differences found in law …
Shrines And Prayers: Two Missing Elements Of Comprehensive Mass Fatality, Rhonda Keyes Pleasants
Shrines And Prayers: Two Missing Elements Of Comprehensive Mass Fatality, Rhonda Keyes Pleasants
Master's Theses
As a Licensed Funeral Service Provider, I am aware of the special issues which surround mass fatalities. A study of numerous mass fatality plans yielded identification of two missing elements from most plans which are critical to mass fatality management. The first missing element is ritual used in the respectful treatment of the dead. The second missing element is religious precepts regarding caring for and final disposition of the dead based upon the particular belief system of the deceased, their family, surrounding community, and culture. Specific qualitative methods of research used were a review of the professional literature, identification of …

Predictors Of Breast And Cervical Cancer Screening Among Vietnamese Immigrant Women, Anh B. Nguyen
Master's Theses
Predictors of breast and cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese immigrant women. Anh B. Nguyen, Master of Arts in Psychology, University of Richmond, 2006. Thesis director: Barbara K. Sholley, Ph.D Although practicing preventative healthcare is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, some high-risk populations do not engage in preventative screenings for cancer. Vietnamese American women constitute a high-risk group in gynecological cancers, and it was hypothesized that tenure, acculturation, health insurance, a regular source of care, education, employment status, and marital status would affect rates of cancer screening. It was also hypothesized that the Vietnamese population would have different trends …
Ipcc Model Simulations Of Future Climate Change In Southeast Asia, Chakkrit Reamruk
Ipcc Model Simulations Of Future Climate Change In Southeast Asia, Chakkrit Reamruk
Master's Theses
The coupled atmosphere-ocean model simulations from the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (2007) are used to investigate climate change over Southeast Asia (SEA) in the 2U‘ century. Simulations of the 20th century temperature and precipitation are compared to observations and guide the selection of the most appropriate models for the study of fiiture climate change in SEA. These models are run for both low (Bl), and high (A2) emission scenarios. By 2100, model projections show SEA temperature rising by 1.0-2.1°C for the Bl scenario and 2.1-3.8°C for the A2 scenario. Under A2 and Bl scenarios, the average annual precipitation increases by …
Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz
Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz
Master's Theses
This study investigated facial expressions of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years with Down Syndrome (experimental group) and compared them to typically developing children (control group). Elicitation of facial expressions was carried out through showings of video clips. Trained observers were used to code expressions of happiness, anger, and disgust from video recordings that were made of the children’s reactions while they watched the video clips.
I hypothesized that Down Syndrome children will not differ from typically developing children in the frequency of elicited happy expressions. However, I expected them to differ in the frequency of elicited …
