Arteriogenic Revascularization Does Not Induce Vascular Function Impairment, Matthew David Yocum
Arteriogenic Revascularization Does Not Induce Vascular Function Impairment, Matthew David Yocum
Master's Theses
Functional hyperemia and arteriolar vasodilation are impaired with chronic ischemia. We sought to examine the impact of chronic ischemia on collateral artery function. For this we used two hindlimb ischemia models to dissect the impact of different repair processes on collateral function. Ligation of the femoral artery increases shear stress in the muscular branch and results in outward remodeling and arteriogenesis. In contrast, resection of the femoral artery proximal to the muscular branch induces blood flow divergence and neutral remodeling along with expectedly greater hypoxia and inflammation. On day 14 after each surgery the diameter of the muscular branch was …

A Multi-Model Assessment Of Stereotype Content Of Three Latino Groups, Sandra Villalpando
A Multi-Model Assessment Of Stereotype Content Of Three Latino Groups, Sandra Villalpando
Master's Theses
The proposed research study deals with Latino groups' stereotypes, the content that makes up those stereotypes, and the effects the stereotypes have on Latinos' general well-being. This project investigates the origins of stereotype content using a general theory of stereotype content that is composed of two theories: social role theory (Eagly et al., 2000) and the stereotype content model (Fiske et al., 2003; Fiske et al., 1999). Short questionnaires on three different Latino groups in American society were completed by non-Latino respondents in the Chicago area, and an extended questionnaire on Latino groups was completed by Latino respondents in the …

Are We All Together? : A Study Of Evacuation And Sheltering Of Public Safety Special Needs Populations In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Anna M. Mcray
Master's Theses
Events thousands of miles away from Virginia have led to enhancements of the existing evacuation and emergency sheltering planning, highlighting the need to consider more than traditional special needs populations. Updated state-level plans specifically address the medical needs of evacuation populations. Pets were taken into consideration and inclusion of dogs, cats, and birds in traditional sheltering planning has begun. Planning began to address those with social needs such as low-income families who may not be able to evacuate until the final hours of an active evacuation. It became clear that there were specific populations that had not been included in …
A Suggested Model For Emergency Medical System Response During An Outbreak Of Human Pandemic Influenza, Ellen A. Black
A Suggested Model For Emergency Medical System Response During An Outbreak Of Human Pandemic Influenza, Ellen A. Black
Master's Theses
Predictions on infection rates for a possible outbreak of human pandemic influenza have officials in Public Health, Epidemiology, Public Safety, and other organizations developing plans on the federal, state, and local levels. These plans are outlining prevention, preparedness, and response during an outbreak, stressing interagency collaboration and contingencies for significant employee absenteeism rates for extended periods of time. However, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers will likely face a marked increase for calls for service to the community; and may be forced to provide service with a diminished workforce and additional duties not traditionally performed by their personnel. This Thesis examines …
Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl
Local Law Enforcement's Initial Role In Response To A Radiological Dispersion Device Attack, Andrew Robert Hoehl
Master's Theses
Today the potential exists for a terrorist organization to use a Radiological Dispersion Device or a dirty bomb within the United States. The results of such an attack could be catastrophic to the affected population. The response by law enforcement must be calculated and planned.
To properly analyze the law enforcement's role in a radioactive incident a qualitative approach was taken. A determination must be made prior to an attack to discern what kind of training will be necessary, what equipment will be required, and what response procedures need to be in place to ensure a safe and efficient response. …
Nano-Mechanics Of Cartilage Glycosaminoglycans Using Molecular Dynamics Methods, Kevin Neil Hendrickson
Nano-Mechanics Of Cartilage Glycosaminoglycans Using Molecular Dynamics Methods, Kevin Neil Hendrickson
Master's Theses
Articular Cartilage (AC) is the main load carrying material in synovial joints {Hamerman, 1962} and degeneration of AC can cause pain in the form of arthritis. Current work is centered on the method of replacing damaged cartilage inside the body (in vivo) with tissue engineered outside the body (ex vivo) {Temenoff, 2000}. In order to engineer tissue ex vivo similar to the native tissue in structure and function there must be a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties of AC. This work focuses on the study of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), a molecule known to be primarily responsible for the compressive stiffness …
Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Phytoplankton Viability In Elkhorn Slough, California., Sarah Rose Smith
Flow Cytometric Analysis Of Phytoplankton Viability In Elkhorn Slough, California., Sarah Rose Smith
Master's Theses
The phytoplankton community structure of Elkhorn Slough was characterized flow cytometrically and found to be dominated in the upper reaches by small cryptophytes (< 5 microm) and picoeukaryotic phytoplankton (< 3 microm). Cell-specific viability of the small cryptophyte population was quantified along a 5 km transect from the mouth to the shallow upper reaches of Elkhorn Slough using fluorescein diacetate (FDA). Corroborative viability techniques, including SYTOX Green stain and cell digestion assay, were determined to be inappropriate for use in Elkhorn Slough due to indiscriminate staining of suspended particulates and incompatibility with cell target material. Viability analysis with FDA revealed a higher fraction of active cryptophyte cells in the upper reaches, the area of their dominance, and a lower fraction of active cells in the lower slough. It was concluded that cell death (as defined by a lack of FDA-linked esterase enzyme activity) is an important force structuring the phytoplankton community of Elkhorn Slough.
Comparing Generation X To Generation Y On Work-Related Beliefs., Susana Fernandez
Comparing Generation X To Generation Y On Work-Related Beliefs., Susana Fernandez
Master's Theses
A new generation of employees with new expectations is entering the workplace. They are known by many names, but most will recognize them as the Millennials or Generation Y (Gen Y). With many Gen Y members already in the workforce, managers are likely to be required to deal with the generational differences that appear to exist among employees. Given that Gen Y members are likely to work closely with Gen X members, the present study explored possible differences between Gen X and Gen Y on their work-related beliefs.

Relations Between Language And Executive Function In Spanish-Speaking Children., Ana Luz Portillo
Master's Theses
The literature on the development of executive function (EF) has been largely limited to studies of middle-class English-speaking children. This study extended executive function research to a primarily low socioeconomic status (SES) sample of Spanish-speaking preschool children living in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine a variety of language measures (vocabulary, grammar, and comprehensive language) in relation to a variety of executive function measures (working memory, inhibitory control, and attention-shifting). Results revealed that Spanish speakers performed on some, but not all, EF measures comparably to higher SES English-speaking peers, in concurrence with previously reported findings. …
Determinants Of Job Satisfaction And Turnover Among Physicians., Dustin Kaplan
Determinants Of Job Satisfaction And Turnover Among Physicians., Dustin Kaplan
Master's Theses
This study examined the determinants of job satisfaction and turnover among physicians at the University of California, San Diego. The relationship between eight predictor variables (administrative requirements, autonomy, ability to provide quality patient care, workload, work/private life conflict, pay, satisfaction with community, locus of control) and two dependent variables (job satisfaction, turnover intentions) was studied. Results indicated physicians' satisfaction with their current position was related to their perceptions of their autonomy, workload, work/private life conflict, pay, and community satisfaction. In addition, all predictors except workload had an impact on physicians' satisfaction with the current career. The only predictor that influenced …

Seafood Labeling And Consumer Behavior: A Fishwise Case Study, Sonoma County, Ca., Alicia Ushijima Elsholz
Seafood Labeling And Consumer Behavior: A Fishwise Case Study, Sonoma County, Ca., Alicia Ushijima Elsholz
Master's Theses
Decades of unsustainable commercial fishing have resulted in depletion of fish stocks, destruction of ocean habitats, and unintended capture and death of fish and marine mammals. In addition, unsustainable aquaculture practices threaten wild species and pollute surrounding natural habitats. In an attempt to combat these adverse impacts, FishWise, a seafood labeling program, was created to encourage consumers at health food stores and gourmet markets in the US to purchase seafood caught or farm raised in a sustainable manner. This study evaluates FishWise to determine its effectiveness in educating consumers about sustainable fishery issues and in influencing purchases of sustainable seafood …
Alfred Of Wessex A Study In Accidental Greatness., Maureen Elizabeth Searing
Alfred Of Wessex A Study In Accidental Greatness., Maureen Elizabeth Searing
Master's Theses
This thesis examines the application of the epithet "great" to King Alfred of Wessex (r. 871--899). It sets a standard for greatness within the context of early medieval Christian kingship, applies it to Alfred, and then compares Alfred to Charlemagne and Charles the Bald. It traces the development of the cult of Alfred from his own lifetime to the early twentieth century. It examines the mythical achievements of Alfred and how they developed, then summarizes his actual accomplishments, and compares them to the standard for greatness developed in the thesis.
Effects Of Wall Compliance On Pulsatile Flow Attenuation In Microchannels., Jing-Keat Goh
Effects Of Wall Compliance On Pulsatile Flow Attenuation In Microchannels., Jing-Keat Goh
Master's Theses
The attenuation of pulsatile flow through highly compliant microchannels has been investigated. The expansion of a compliant microchannel subjected to pulsatile flow is able to store fluid temporarily and thereby reduce the peak-to-peak magnitude of flow fluctuation. In a highly compliant microchannel, the microchannel expansion reduces its hydraulic resistance and its associated pressure drop. For a similar inlet pressure condition, the pressure drop along the length of a more compliant microchannel is lower than a rigid microchannel. Therefore, greater net pressure is available to deform the microchannel wall. So the hypothesis of this study is the coupled relationship between higher …

The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of job satisfaction among three departments within an organization. The study used five predictors: leadership/top management communication with subordinates, feedback received from one's supervisor, training opportunities for employees, career opportunities within the company, and teamwork or cooperation among employees. Using data from 608 participants, the present study examined the relationships between each of these five predictors and job satisfaction. Consistent with hypotheses, each of these predictors was significantly related to job satisfaction. Moreover, leadership/top management communication with subordinates (except for one department surveyed), career opportunities within the company, and teamwork …
Efficacy Of High School Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation., Crystal Miles-Threatt
Efficacy Of High School Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation., Crystal Miles-Threatt
Master's Theses
The Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE) is an annual medical clearance required for athletic participation. Six medical organizations have endorsed the requirements for a PPE, and the California Interscholastic Federation offers a recommended form. However, because the use of this form is not mandatory, a lack of consistency occurs and some forms do not contain all the recommended requirements. This study analyzes the PPE process in California high schools to better understand whether the PPE process offers sufficient precautions to ensure athlete medical safety.
Factors In Bmi Increase Among Multicultural Freshmen., Leah Haritan
Factors In Bmi Increase Among Multicultural Freshmen., Leah Haritan
Master's Theses
This observational research examines body mass index (BMI) changes in multicultural freshmen attending a large public urban university. It explores factors associated with BMI increase and investigates behavior changes and perceptions related to diet and body weight. The study utilizes an online survey distributed in November 2007 and again in April 2008. All 3,260 freshmen were eligible to participate. Initial response rate was 23%; 44% of initial respondents completed both surveys (N = 337). Results revealed a significant increase in BMI for on-campus residents, Caucasians, and males (P < 0.05). Decreased vegetable intake was associated with a BMI increase of less than one (P < 0.05). Fruits and vegetables were perceived by most as healthful; their high cost, and limited variety and availability on campus were deemed potential barriers to intake. Freshman weight gain may be a function of gender, residence, and ethnicity, and deserves further examination.

Portrayals Of Motherhood In Four Women's Magazines: 1985 And 2009., Kristen A. Sato
Master's Theses
This thesis concerns representations of women as mothers in women's magazines during 1985 and 2009. It analyzes the images, symbols, and textual messages within the advertisements of these magazines. Gender roles and gender scripts for women during the respective years are then considered with the collected data, in order to contrast portrayals of mothers in the advertisements against aspects of actual motherhood.
Urban Creek Restoration, Adobe Creek, Santa Clara County, California., Chris D. Pilson
Urban Creek Restoration, Adobe Creek, Santa Clara County, California., Chris D. Pilson
Master's Theses
Increased urban development has encroached upon and impacted Adobe Creek by constricting the route and volume of flow to predetermined corridors, often irrespective of the original creek morphology. The headwaters geology and human influences have contributed to the creek's disequilibrium. Channelization and instream modifications have segmented the creek system limiting the transfer of changes through the system. Located east of the San Andreas fault (SAF) in the Franciscan Complex, Adobe Creek flows from the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and empties into the San Francisco Bay.
The Personality And Mental Health Of Physical And Social Scientists., Chad Richard Kempel
The Personality And Mental Health Of Physical And Social Scientists., Chad Richard Kempel
Master's Theses
The decision to pursue a career as a scientist and the likelihood of becoming successful is dependent upon a variety of factors, including a unique blend of personality characteristics and mental health. Being either thing- or people-oriented may also be related to whether or not an individual chooses to travel down either the Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) or Social Science path. In order to examine these relationships, 214 academic scientists throughout the United States were assessed on a battery of personality and mental health measures. As was expected, social scientists scored higher than STEM scientists in general on a measure of extraversion. …
Host Majority Group Members' Acculturation Attitudes Towards Immigrant Groups., Kanako Miwa
Host Majority Group Members' Acculturation Attitudes Towards Immigrant Groups., Kanako Miwa
Master's Theses
One out of every four individuals residing in the U.S. lived in another country before moving to the U.S. Such an individual has to face acculturation. Research has consistently shown that immigrants differ in how they go about their acculturation. However, little is known about what acculturation strategies the majority group members believe immigrants should adopt in the host country. Therefore, the present study examines the host majority group members' (Euro-Americans) acculturation orientations toward two immigrant groups (Mexican and Japanese) on different life domains and identifies individual difference factors (e.g., social dominance orientation, social distance, and self-efficacy) that are related …

Tall Fescue (Lolium Arundinaceum (Schreb.) S.J. Darbyshire) Cultivar Performance In The Central California Coastal Region, Seril Shimizu
Master's Theses
Tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) S.J. Darbyshire) has long been known as a turfgrass that utilizes lower levels of inputs than most other cool season turfgrasses (Turgeon, 2005). In recent years, turf breeders have been selecting for cultivars of tall fescue that have finer leaf textures. As the use of tall fescue expands, consumers want to now what cultivar to use and how to manage it. This study looked at 18 tall fescue cultivars grown at two mowing heights of five and 10 centimeters and evaluated plant quality based on stand density, leaf texture, and genetic plant color. In the …
The Effects Of Aging On Muscle Loss And Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Levels In Rats Fed A Diet Containing Suboptimal Leucine Levels, Corinne Rose Kohlen
The Effects Of Aging On Muscle Loss And Nuclear Factor Kappa-B Levels In Rats Fed A Diet Containing Suboptimal Leucine Levels, Corinne Rose Kohlen
Master's Theses
Loss of muscle due to aging is often associated with significant detrimental effects. Therefore, it is crucial to understand signaling molecules that may trigger the muscle loss or prevent the process. The transcription factor, Nuclear Factor Kappa-B (NF-κB), is associated with both catabolic and anabolic pathways of muscle metabolism and may be involved in age-related muscle loss. Leucine is an essential amino acid that is required for both protein synthesis and intracellular signaling pathways that regulate protein synthesis and degradation. The current study examined muscle NF-kB levels in male Sprague-Dawley rats, aged 6 (adult) and 21 months (old) fed a …

Depression: The Role Of Cultural Factors And Perception Of Treatment., Cynthia Chacon
Master's Theses
Depression is a prevalent mental disorder. Various factors influence people's attitudes toward help seeking, perceptions, and beliefs about psychotherapy, including ethnicity (language), distress level, social support, treatment modality, and subpopulation. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy (PT) have been used to treat depression. This study explored the relationship between the aforementioned variables. Participants (N = 264) were White and Mexican-American from a college and the community. Results indicated that ethnicity and subpopulation were not significantly related to seeking help; people who reported higher distress levels and higher social support expressed greater likelihood to seek help. All groups rated CBT …
The Redevelopment Of Place In The Urban Context: An Evaluation Of Non-Housing Economic Change In A Transforming Public Housing Neighborhood, Crystal Jackson
The Redevelopment Of Place In The Urban Context: An Evaluation Of Non-Housing Economic Change In A Transforming Public Housing Neighborhood, Crystal Jackson
Master's Theses
At the turn of the twenty-first century the pervasive unsuitability of living conditions within many public housing projects facilitated the enactment of the HOPE VI program, the most recent reform in public housing policy. While increasing the habitability of traditional public neighborhoods arguably has been an overarching goal of the HOPE VI intervention, research has not widely considered the extent to which the program may have facilitated the development of non-housing amenities in transforming neighborhoods. The goal of this study is to consider the extent to which non-housing economic amenities have been developed in a transforming Chicago neighborhood targeted for …
