Dreams Sin Fronteras: Exploring The Lives And Experiences Of Five Returned Migrants In Mexico, Andrea Portillo
Dreams Sin Fronteras: Exploring The Lives And Experiences Of Five Returned Migrants In Mexico, Andrea Portillo
Master's Theses
Due to an unprecedented number of deportations in the last decade, coupled with a recent fall in net migration from Mexico, return migration from the United States to Mexico has made its way to the forefront of the immigration discourse. This article uses the experiences of five Mexican migrants who have returned to Mexico, “voluntarily” or through deportation proceedings, to argue that the stories and experiences of returned migrants can provide insight into the challenges/successes of life post-return. In doing so, this article draws parallels between the personal experiences of these five returnees and the broader discourse on return migration, …
An Economic Valuation Of Biodiversity: Measuring Willingness-To-Pay For Quinoa Conservation In Peru, Craig Scott
An Economic Valuation Of Biodiversity: Measuring Willingness-To-Pay For Quinoa Conservation In Peru, Craig Scott
Master's Theses
Peru is facing increasing homogenization of traditional crops as a result of international market pressures. Destruction of the genetic resource base creates vulnerability to disease, climate, and pest shocks which threaten food security and the economic future of Peru’s agricultural sector. This paper aims to determine whether informational priming on the non-market value of national identity is sufficient to change the willingness to pay for agro biodiversity programs among the Peruvian general population in both urban and rural areas. A choice set willingness to pay experiment combined with choice rankings and randomized priming measures how much individuals are willing to …

Master's Theses
Abstract:
Based on a panel of 50 African countries from 1970 to 2015, this study analyzes the impact of public investments and spending in education and health sectors on GDP per capita growth. I separately modeled for education and health capital, while controlling for governance and demonstrated the importance of investments and expenditures on human capital in countries production capacity accumulation, which in the long run leads sustainable economic growth. Results show a positive relationship between spending in those sectors and the per capita income growth and proves their importance on the continents’ combat against poverty.
Incentives And Teacher Effort: Evidence From Lagos, Nigeria, Simileoluwa Adebajo
Incentives And Teacher Effort: Evidence From Lagos, Nigeria, Simileoluwa Adebajo
Master's Theses
According to recent research (Hattie, 2003), teachers contribute to around 30% of the overall variation in student achievement and success – more than any other influencing factor. This study seeks to understand how different types of incentives (monetary, near monetary and non-monetary incentives) influence the “effort” of public school teachers as perceived by the students in Lagos, Nigeria using a novel measurement tool – the teaching effectiveness survey – to measure the teachers’ outcomes. Using a randomized field experiment where students evaluate the changes in their teachers’ effort with a standard teaching effectiveness survey and differences in differences estimation, we …

The Impact Of Goal Settings And Self-Help Groups To Support Small Businesses: Experimental Evidence Using Female Entrepreneurs In Abuja Nigeria., Nneoma Nwobilor
Master's Theses
Approximately 57% of women in Nigeria from age 15-64 are involved in some form of employment, but there are still 17 million unemployed women (World Bank, 2016). Most of these women are involved in informal entrepreneurship due to external constraints. According to the World Bank, women who have no access to schooling are forced to find informal work to provide for themselves and their families. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of goal settings and support groups on small businesses among female small-scale business owners in Abuja Nigeria. The research conducted uses the experimental design created by the Family …
The Causal Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Surgery On Psychological Wellbeing, Sam Manning
The Causal Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Surgery On Psychological Wellbeing, Sam Manning
Master's Theses
Cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) are birth conditions in which a newborn has an opening in the roof of their mouth or a slit in their upper lip. Left untreated, CL/P can lead to speech impediments and an unsightly orofacial deformity. However, a sequence of simple, common surgical procedures can restore function with minimal scarring. To date, the psychological effects of being born with CL/P have been investigated in the literature, but the restorative impact of CL/P surgery on psychological wellbeing has not been rigorously evaluated. This study uses a quasi-experimental approach to estimate the impact of being born …
Patriarchal Norms, Bargaining, And Gendered Attitudes On Intimate Partner Violence, Anna Eckenrode
Patriarchal Norms, Bargaining, And Gendered Attitudes On Intimate Partner Violence, Anna Eckenrode
Master's Theses
How do the underlying mechanisms of social norms and bargaining power relate to the acceptance of intimate partner violence within households? How do short run and long run determinants of gender norms affect attitudes toward IPV? This study begins to decompose the dynamics of the acceptance of IPV within couples using data from the Demographic Health Survey, as well as examine the relationship in the context of patriarchal societies using data from the Ethnographic Atlas. I find that females are more accepting than males of intimate partner violence, and females becoming more educated is associated with her being less accepting …
The Composition Of Public Expenditure: Does It Matter For Economic Growth?, Valery Awuh
The Composition Of Public Expenditure: Does It Matter For Economic Growth?, Valery Awuh
Master's Theses
Abstract: In the past, a lot of studies put more emphasis on the aggregate government expenditure as the primary driver of social and economic growth which is in the short term. The studies did not capture expenditures on infrastructure, education, and defense which are the disaggregate government expenditure that sustains both social and economic growth in the long term.
The objective of this study is to determine how the demand and supply side of government expenditure can impact on social and economic growth using 45 both advanced and emerging countries. It also wants to establish the expenses that have a …

Political Revolutions And Women's Progress: Why The Egyptian Arab Spring Failed To Deliver On The Promises Of Women's Rights, Anne Song
Master's Theses
The mass participation of women in the 2011 Egyptian Arab Spring began what many thought would be a new feminist movement. As news cycles started showing the central role of women in the Arab Spring, many people including the women who demonstrated believed women’s rights were on the horizon. This study shows why the 2011 Arab Spring did not deliver on the promises of women’s rights in Egypt. Explaining the historical, religious, and societal influences on women’s rights in Egypt, and using data from the Arab Barometer and reports from the World Bank and UN, this study shows that the …

“Se Van A Trabajar, Pero Se Quedan A Vivir”: A Qualitative Exploration Into The Subjective Well-Being Of Mexican Women In A Migrant-Sending Community, Vanessa Saldivar
Master's Theses
The study of subjective well-being and migration are two fields that have increased in prominence in recent decades. However, in the area where the two fields intersect, significant gaps exist. Meanwhile, the majority of research on migration ignores those who stay, resulting in an unbalanced and incomplete understanding of the phenomenon of migration. Using an ethnographic and life history approach, this study explores the subjective well-being of women residing in the migrant-sending community of Tlachichila. Narratives from semi-structured interviews and participant observation field notes were analyzed thematically and emergent themes were identified. Findings suggest that despite the hardship that underscores …

Seeing Red: Analyzing Iucn Red List Data Of South And Southeast Asian Amphibians, Alexandra Gonzalez
Master's Theses
In the midst of the sixth mass extinction event which is currently underway, it appears that amphibians are one of the most impacted vertebrates. Over 6,500 amphibian species are listed on the IUCN Red List (an assessment tool which provides species’ conservation status, perceived threats, and distribution range). While it is well-known that populations under multiple stressors are more likely to undergo significant declines, there are little to no resources available for visualizing how these threats may work synergistically and interact within a species’ range. This is especially the case for Southeast Asian amphibians, which much less attention has been …
Part 1: Synthesis Of 3,7 Dimethyl-7-Methoxyoctane-2-Ol (Osyrol) From Citronellol Utilizing The Wacker Process Part 2: Developing A Methodology For C(Sp3)-H Arylation On The Β Position Of A Carboxylic Acid Using A Removable Directing Group, Stephen Lo
Master's Theses
The synthesis of 3,7-dimethyl-7-methoxyoctane-2-ol (Osyrol), an important sandalwood odorant, from 3,7-dimethylocta-1,6-diene (dihydromyrcene) was recently accomplished by two groups, both utilizing a two-step epoxide formation and ring opening approach. Here, the synthesis of Osyrol from 3,7-Dimethyloct-6-en-1-ol (citronellol) is accomplished in a novel six-step approach. The key steps in this synthesis is the Wacker Oxidation of a terminal double bond followed by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction. Though most of the steps in this reaction scheme resulted in limited success, the key steps occurred with high yields.
In the second chapter, the effects of 2-aminophenyl-1H-pyrazole (2-APP) as a removable directing group …

Don’T Worry Be Happy: Analysis Of Happiness As An Economic Measurement, Kofi Boadu
Don’T Worry Be Happy: Analysis Of Happiness As An Economic Measurement, Kofi Boadu
Master's Theses
Everyone wants to be happy. Happiness however never seems to be a national goal. A possible answer is that happiness is subjective and on its own may not be reflective of the economic status of a country. Therefore, should people’s happiness should be treated equally with other traditional economic measurements? This cross-country level study looks at the relationship between happiness and traditional economic measurements; mainly GDP per capita. Questions concerning whether GDP per capita indeed captures the overall well-being of a citizen and happiness’ eligibility as an economic measurement are addressed. Findings confirm that happiness and GDP per capita are …
Female Risk Aversion: Experimental Evidence From Myanmar, O Mandalay
Female Risk Aversion: Experimental Evidence From Myanmar, O Mandalay
Master's Theses
Present literature shows that the risk tolerance of females is generally lower than that of males, but in some circumstances, it can exceed – when concerning the welfare of the offspring, for example. Many experiments and data suggest that the dynamics of female risk tolerance depend on context and type of rewards involved as well as cultural norms. In our experiment, holding the culture and the context fixed, we found that females took less risk than males. Our experiment was conducted in Myanmar using a lottery selection method to measure risk over five consecutive rounds. We found 1) female risk …
Impact Of Innovative Menstrual Technology And Awareness On Female Empowerment Outcomes In Rural Nepal, Anjali Limbu
Impact Of Innovative Menstrual Technology And Awareness On Female Empowerment Outcomes In Rural Nepal, Anjali Limbu
Master's Theses
In developing countries, menstruation poses two significant challenges for females. First, the resources required for periods are expensive for those in low-income communities. Hence, the absence of such menstrual products lowers females’ access to schooling and employment. Next, periods are also heavily stigmatized – especially in poorer or rural areas. Such taboos surrounding menstruation negatively impacts females’ psychological development and hamper their prospects of socialization. Thus, to analyze this issue, we ran a randomized control trial in Nepal, where we provided reusable menstrual pads and / or health seminar to 312 schoolgirls and 100 of their mothers. Our outcomes demonstrate …
What’S At Steak? The Political Discourse Of Emissions Intensity And Implications Of Animal Agriculture, Kalyn Simon
What’S At Steak? The Political Discourse Of Emissions Intensity And Implications Of Animal Agriculture, Kalyn Simon
Master's Theses
This thesis analyzes the international discourse of greenhouse gas emissions in relation to livestock production. Specific government ministries, research institutes, and multilateral organizations are framing a new strategy to mitigate emissions by using emissions intensity metrics. Emissions intensity is a ratio comparing emissions produced per unit of animal product as oppose to measuring absolute emissions. This research is acknowledged as a win-win scenario which allows for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions while continuing production more efficiently. This thesis outlines the emergence of this metric in international discourse and the implications this shift has on the livestock sector globally. Ultimately, …

Comparison Of Otus And Asvs In 73 Bird Species From Equatorial Guinea, Darien Capunitan
Comparison Of Otus And Asvs In 73 Bird Species From Equatorial Guinea, Darien Capunitan
Master's Theses
As scientists discover more information about the communities of bacteria that live on and inside hosts, "the microbiome", a new avenue for understanding the health of humans and animals has opened. There are many analysis pipelines for microbiome data processing, and choice of analytical tools can affect the biological results of the analysis. The current analysis climate does not point toward a single most effective protocol, which hinders comparisons across studies. An important step in microbiome data processing is the assignment of reads into groups of similar organisms. The traditional unit for grouping organisms is the species; however resolving sequences …
