A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta Jul 1966

A History Of The Department Of Legal Medicine At Medical College Of Virginia, Mary A. Giunta

Master's Theses

Legal medicine can be defined as "the aoience of the application of medical knowledge to the purposes of the law." Therefore, its limits are on the one hand the requirements of the laws and on the other the whole range of medicine, that is to say, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and all the sciences auxiliary thereto, that is, chemistry, physics, botany, et cetera; all lend their aid when necessity arises and in the same case to enable a court of law to arrive at a proper conclusion on a contested question affecting life or property."

A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy Jun 1966

A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy

Master's Theses

Do we learn to reason logically just as we learn grammar or estimating distances? Philosophers usually say we do and have taught logic as a discipline for thousands of years. They are generally not content to teach "about" logic, or in the history of it; they generally state their intent is to teach "logic for everyday thinking". Appendix VI is a personal communication to the author from a philosopher stating this clearly and comparing the skill of logical reasoning with the skill of using grammar.

Or is logical reasoning a relatively inherent trait, as intelligence is generally assumed to be? …

Dyadic Communication As A Function Of Communicative Method And Interpersonal Mutuality, Harry Wallace Craver Jr. Apr 1966

Dyadic Communication As A Function Of Communicative Method And Interpersonal Mutuality, Harry Wallace Craver Jr.

Master's Theses

A large proportion of research in social psychology has been concerned with interpersonal Communication. More often than not, when different investigators got interested in an area of experimentation that is fairly broad and influenced by many variables, an evolvement of several different categories of or approaches to the research area occurs. The area of interpersonal communication is no exception.

The Theatre Of The Absurd, Edith Beirne Brooks Apr 1966

The Theatre Of The Absurd, Edith Beirne Brooks

Master's Theses

An introduction to the Theatre of the Absurd confronts the viewer with a meaningless, chaotic situation. Ludicrous people mouth meaningless dialogue, and the "plot" seems to move in ever diminishing concentric circles. One is stunned by the nothingness and the void which accompanies the termination of stage action. Why was it written? What was the author trying to convey? These are questions which fill the minds of the audience. The purpose was not monetary, nor was it sensationalism, because both of these could be achieved in a more expedient manner. Thoughtful study and exploration are demanded to answer one's questions …

An Investigation Of The Status, Functions, And Practices Of High School Homerooms In Virginia, Anne Hill Hayes Apr 1966

An Investigation Of The Status, Functions, And Practices Of High School Homerooms In Virginia, Anne Hill Hayes

Master's Theses

No data have been discovered determining exactly why or when the first homeroom originated. In a study by Galen Jones published in 1935, it was reported that there were two homerooms introduced between 1875-1879; two in the period 1900-1904; three, in 1905-1909; and nine in the period from 1910-1914. From then on the growth was rapid.

The homeroom appeared and developed with amazing rapidity because it seemed to offer a solution to the strong demand for a type of education which would include proper emphasis upon important physical, social, emotional, and spiritual factors largely ignored in traditional instruction.

Since its …

An Analysis Of The Public Intermediate School, Richard Thomas Talbert

In this study the author baa presented not only opinions of educators throughout the country, but also results of research data compiled by those public school divisions in the State of Virginia that have experimented with this intermediate school theory and have reached validated conclusions . Rhetorical Patterns In The Poetry Of Andrew Marvell, Elizabeth Hughes Pole Jan 1966

Rhetorical Patterns In The Poetry Of Andrew Marvell, Elizabeth Hughes Pole

Master's Theses

The two-fold insight that derives from this study is, on the one hand, the increased understanding of Marvell's use of language in both early and late poems and, on the other, the increased understanding of the rhetorical movements. The reader of Marvell's poems is possessed of a sensitivity to his poetry that is based on an awareness of his rhetoric as idiosyncratic and as reflective of the habits of the age.

A History Of The First Unitarian Church Of San Jose, California, Debra N. Dietiker

Master's Theses

The history of the First Unitarian Church of San Jose reveals the church as a microcosm in the macrocosm of Unitarianism and Protestantism in the United States during the last century. Certain themes and tensions have established themselves as they have arisen and been repeated in the history of the San Jose church against the background of Unitarianism and Protestantism in San Jose, in California and in the United States.
