A Reverse Genetics Approach For Studying Histone H4 Structure-Function Relationships In Yeast, Michael J. Bonaduce
A Reverse Genetics Approach For Studying Histone H4 Structure-Function Relationships In Yeast, Michael J. Bonaduce
Master's Theses
A previously constructed mutation of the histone H4 gene has been the subject of a detailed analysis. The mutation involves an H4 gene encoding two amino acid changes which substitute aspartic acid for glycine at positions 13 and 42 of the polypeptide. These substitutions result in a nonfunctional H4 protein when assayed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In contrast, an analysis of an amino terminal deletion of amino acids 3-26 results in a functional H4 protein. Physical biochemistry studies identify the sites of histone-histone interactions between residues 38-102 of histone H4, the same area in which position 42 resides. The question being …
Sodium/Proton Exchange In The Gills Of Three Species Of Crabs : Libinia Dubia, Callinectes Sapidus, And Menippe Mercenaria, Nicholas J. Maiolo
Sodium/Proton Exchange In The Gills Of Three Species Of Crabs : Libinia Dubia, Callinectes Sapidus, And Menippe Mercenaria, Nicholas J. Maiolo
Master's Theses
Na+/H+ exchange was studied in plasma membrane vesicles from gills of three species of crabs: Callinectes sapidus (blue crab), Libinia dubia (spider crab), and Menippe mercenaria (stone crab). Spider crabs and stone crabs were acclimated to full (35ppt) seawater, while blue crabs were acclimated to both dilute (5ppt) and full strength seawater. Membrane vesicles were prepared by sucrose density centrifugation. Na+/H+ exchange was analyzed using acridine orange fluorescence. Male C. sapidus showed the most exchange activity (per g gill tissue), followed by M. mercenaria, female C. sapidus and Libinia dubia. No difference in exchange activity was evident when blue crabs …

A Descriptive Study Of The Kinetic Family Drawings Of Children From Catholic, Lutheran, And Seventh-Day Adventist Religious Backgrounds, Anne-Maria J. Monttinen
Master's Theses
Problem. The purpose of this study was to describe the symbols and actions children from religious backgrounds include in their Kinetic Family Drawings. Method The sample consisted of 172 children 9 to 12 years of age from 9 randomly selected Catholic, Lutheran, and Seventh-day Adventist elementary schools in Berrien County, Michigan. Each child made a Kinetic Family Drawing and answered a brief questionnaire. Findings 1. Approximately 12% of children from religious backgrounds included religious symbols or actions in their KFDs. 2. Boys and girls from religious backgrounds drew the same kinds of symbols but different actions in their KFDs. 3. …
Sovran Financial Corporation Competitive Analysis, Don Kierson
Sovran Financial Corporation Competitive Analysis, Don Kierson
Master's Theses
Competitive theories attempt to describe, analyze, rationalize and predict behaviors when two or more people want the same thing. Competition appears to come naturally to humans. We have evolved over vast number of generations in response to changes in our environment. Our early struggle for existence led to a highly developed tendency toward aggressive behavior. The process of natural selection depended on this trait to ensure that the strongest members of our species flourished. If unchecked, however, aggression would have eventually destroyed mankind. V.C. Wynne-Edwards29 theorized that societies of higher animals have developed "conventional competitions" which encourage aggression while …

Sodium/Proton Exhange In Membrane Vesicles From Crab (Callinected Sapidus And Carcinus Maenas) Gill, Robert Eric Shetlar
Master's Theses
The existence of a sodium-ion-for-hydrogen-ion exchange mechanism in the membranes of certain epithelial cells has been demonstrated by many investigators (Murer et al., 1976; Tsai et al., 1984; Seiler et al., 1985 ) • This mechanism has been shown to exchange one Na+ for one H+ (Aronson & Igarashi, 1986) and is thought to be more prominent in the brush-border membranes (Murer et al., 197 6; Reenstra et al., 1981 ; Ives et al., 1983) of mammalian kidney tubules and intestinal tissues than in basolateral membranes of these tissues. The roles the exchanger plays in the cell may include intracellular …
Dietary Induced Weight Gain And Recovery Of Body Weight In Mongolian Gerbils, Maryann Mccarthy
Dietary Induced Weight Gain And Recovery Of Body Weight In Mongolian Gerbils, Maryann Mccarthy
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the capacities of male and female gerbils for recovery from increased weight gain produced by ingestion of high fat food. Thirty-six gerbils, assigned to either 20% or 40% groups with nine males and nine females in each percent weight gain group, were fed powdered chow under baseline conditions, then switched to a high fat diet until they reached target weight increase, and then returned to powdered chow. The 40% group was eliminated from the comparisons due to the failure of the gerbils to reach criterion. No sex differences were found in the …

A Comparison Of The Television Viewing Habits Of Religiously Oriented And Non-Religiously Oriented Children, Hector C. Detres
A Comparison Of The Television Viewing Habits Of Religiously Oriented And Non-Religiously Oriented Children, Hector C. Detres
Master's Theses
Problem
Television plays an important role in the lives of children. The objective of this study was to compare religiously oriented and non- religiously oriented children and the patterns of television viewing habits between these two groups.
Method
The analysis of variance was used to measure the hypotheses. A questionnaire completed by 378 subjects in grades 3, 6, 9, and 12 in private and public schools was used to gather the data for this study.
Results
Significant differences were found between religiously oriented and non-religiously oriented children in the average number of hours of television viewing, and in preference for …
