Parental Alcoholism And Children's Social Skills., Marsha Dean Norton Jan 1999

Parental Alcoholism And Children's Social Skills., Marsha Dean Norton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focused on the daily interactions and home environments of 14 families with alcoholic fathers who were beginning primary treatment for their alcoholism. Data were collected by in-depth, face to face interviews with all family members. Social skills questionnaires administered to each child. Two specific family patterns were found to be associated with higher level social skills in children. First, father's frequent presence in the home, coupled with positive family interaction, was associated with children's high range social skills. Even in circumstances where violence existed, if the father was routinely at home and participated in positive family interactions, social …

Chicken Pax Atomica: The Impact Of Nuclear Weapons On Conflict Between Interstate Dyads., James Franklin Pasley Jan 1999

Chicken Pax Atomica: The Impact Of Nuclear Weapons On Conflict Between Interstate Dyads., James Franklin Pasley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nuclear weapons, long considered the bete noire of human existence are examined quantitatively and qualitatively in this dissertation to ascertain if the heinous effects they threaten ultimately serve to promote deterrence between pairs of states. The findings suggest that nuclear weapons do have a significant impact on conflict when present on both sides of a dyadic dispute. In such symmetrical nuclear pairs conflict levels are quantitatively shown to be reduced, suggesting that the conflict inhibiting qualities of these weapons long espoused by nuclear optimists are legitimate. Further evidence is presented in the form of a qualitative analysis of conflict between …

The Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Comparison Of Approaches., Peter Anthony Petito Jan 1999

The Estimation Of Premorbid Intelligence: A Comparison Of Approaches., Peter Anthony Petito

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Early methods to estimate premorbid intelligence focused on the use of the WAIS or WAIS-R IQ scores or selected WAIS or WAIS-R subtests. It was expected that performance on such tests would remain stable after a brain injury. As further research showed this belief was not valid, researchers turned to the use of other tests of current ability, one being a measure of reading ability known as the National Adult Reading Test (NART). A second approach focused on the relationship found between certain demographic variables and intelligence. More recently, researchers have employed an approach that combined present abilities performance and …

Reduction Of Endogenous Bacteria Associated With Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Fillets Using The Grovac Process., Milton Ruben Ramos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fresh catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) fillets (CF) can serve as vehicles for spoilage and pathogenic bacteria. Concern for the microbiological safety of chilled CF has grown lately because psychrotrophic pathogens can survive and grow at refrigeration temperatures. The Grovac method, a new, patented (U.S. 5,543,163) process is being used in an attempt to reduce the growth of pathogens and spoilage microorganisms in CF. This process involves the using of a process solution of ascorbic acid (AA) and sodium chloride (NaCl), vacuum and tumbling. Specific objectives of this study included the isolation and identification of endogenous microflora associated with fresh whole catfish …

Synthesis, Thermodynamic Stability And Enzymic Behavior Of Oligonucleotides Containing Pyrazole Nucleobase Analogs., Andrea Sapp Saurage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Non-hydrogen bonding nucleosides with iodo, nitro, propynyl and thiazolyl substituted at the 4-position of pyrazole were prepared. These nucleosides were converted to their corresponding nucleoside phosphoramidites and incorporated into a series of complementary oligonucleotides in order to determine the effect that varying size, charge distribution and polarizability has on duplex stability and structure. The self-complementary Dickerson dodecamer sequence 5'-CGCXAATTYGCG-3', as well as the non-self complementary sequence 5'-CAAAATGGTGGCCAAGT-3 ' previously investigated by Brown, were used to determine the duplex stabilization and thermodynamic consequences of placing 5-nitroindole and 4-substituted pyrazole nucleosides across from each natural base. In the pyrazole series, the largest …

The Search For Senefiance: Contraires Allegories In The "Roman De La Rose", Camilla Rachal Pugh Jan 1999

The Search For Senefiance: Contraires Allegories In The "Roman De La Rose", Camilla Rachal Pugh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this dissertation that there exists in the Roman de la Rose a system of contraires allegories which move in a direction opposed to the traditional readings of three facets of the text. They are (1) Amant's assault upon the statue/sanctuary, (2) his relationship with Bel Accueil, and (3) the advice which Genius gives to Amour's barons. In addition, when taken cumulatively, the readings advanced argue for the identification of the Roman de la Rose with the Evangile eternel of Joachim de Fiore. These readings depend upon the reader's recognition of Faus Semblant as a contraire …

The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson Jan 1999

The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mediating Structures in African-American literature are essential in the formation of identity in the lives of the characters. Contemporary theory has moved into a deeper layer of hermeneutics beyond self/other dichotomies to look at the space between binary opposites. Therefore, modern theorists look at sites of play, of exchange, and of transformation. The porch is such a space. A mediating structure is a space that allows the various characters to develop and define themselves. Because of African-Americans, lack of freedom, it was important for them to find a space in which they were able to move and express their ideas, …

Computational Approach For Determination Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Soils Using Continuous Intrusion Piezocone Penetration Test., Chung Rak Song Jan 1999

Computational Approach For Determination Of The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Soils Using Continuous Intrusion Piezocone Penetration Test., Chung Rak Song

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In order to obtain the hydraulic conductivity or the coefficient of consolidation of the soil from PCPT, the pore pressure response during dissipation test is typically used. This method, however, requires the intermittent stopping of the advancement of the piezocone penetrometer for the dissipation test. Also, this method does not fully take into account the pore pressure interaction between near and far fields as pointed out by previous researchers (Kurup and Tumay, 1997). Thus a new rational approach is investigated here. The proposed method utilizes the pore water pressure during the penetration of the piezocone penetrometer. By its nature, the …

Effects Of The 4 X 4 Block Schedule On Teacher Behavior And Student Engagement Rate At The High School Level., Karen Meredith Soniat Jan 1999

Effects Of The 4 X 4 Block Schedule On Teacher Behavior And Student Engagement Rate At The High School Level., Karen Meredith Soniat

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Numerous educators have suggested that traditional scheduling practices in the nation's schools have contributed to the inability of teachers to utilize "proven" instructional techniques. This study examined the effects of the 4 x 4 block schedule on teaching behavior and student engagement rate in four core curriculum areas in 21 Louisiana high schools. This causal-comparative, ex-post facto study involved three group of schools matched to the extent possible on student population, free/reduced lunch, and community type. The 250 teachers in the Phase I (quantitative study) sample were randomly selected and measured via classroom observations. MANOVA results relating to differences on …

Hazards To Navigation On The Lower Mississippi River And At -Risk Human Populations., George P. Wooddell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation tests whether known hazards to navigation determine the location of vessel accidents along the lower Mississippi River and describes the human populations most at risk according to predictions. The data are comprised of the relative risk index of river hazards (Forsyth et al. 1996, Gramling et al. 1998), the demographic characteristics of nearby residents, (U.S. Census 1990), and actual U.S. Coast Guard accident reports. Usable predictors of vessel accidents and a knowledge of population characteristics will enable better planning of emergency response, better placement of emergency response equipment, and more effective efforts to prevent vessel. accidents along the …

Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall Jan 1999

Practicing Freedom With Care: The Development Of Warrior-Caregiving In Contemporary Literature From The Americas., Joanna Barszewska Marshall

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Taking my cue from Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark, I read three contemporary Black writers in the Americas---George Lamming, Barbados; Michelle Cliff, Jamaica; and Jess Mowry, United States---for signs of a response that was ignored when prevailing conceptions of freedom were formulated in early America. Suggesting that the vision embodied in the name of one plantation, Sans Souci, characterized attempts to deal with the anxieties of a slaveholding free republic, I argue that these writers provide an alternative vision by attempting to reconcile the practices of freedom and care, and I engage their vision in dialogue with several theoretical …

How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane Jan 1999

How The Villanelle's Form Got Fixed., Julie Ellen Kane

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This work debunks the myth of the villanelle as a "fixed poetic form" dating back to the sixteenth century or earlier and replaces it with a new-historical account of how a semi-improvisatory musico-poetic genre, the choral-dance lyric, was "translated" across ruptures in lyric technology between oral, manuscript, and print cultures. The "fixity" of the villanelle's written form is shown to be not a matter of long-standing "heritage" or "tradition," but the result of deliberate actions taken by one eighteenth- and one nineteenth-century individual who inserted less-than-truthful passages into otherwise "authoritative" prosodic treatises. Chapter 1 identifies the literary sources responsible for …

The Influence Of Climate For Belief In The Overseas Mission On Cross-Cultural Training Effectiveness., Charles Andrew Handler Jan 1999

The Influence Of Climate For Belief In The Overseas Mission On Cross-Cultural Training Effectiveness., Charles Andrew Handler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study represents the presentation and empirical investigation of a model of cross-cultural training (CCT) effectiveness. This model develops the idea that characteristics of the individual and the organization may influence trainees' motivation to learn and thus may impact the effectiveness of CCT programs. The proposed model is unique in that it suggests trainees, perceptions of a specific climate referent, climate for belief in the overseas mission, may serve as an organizational characteristic that can impact CCT effectiveness. It is proposed that perceptions of a climate for belief in the overseas mission are created via organizational members, shared perceptions of …

Toward An Understanding Of Instructor-Student Interactions: A Study Of Videoconferencing In The Postsecondary Distance Learning Classroom., Thomas R. Atkinson Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This qualitative case study examined interactions, the effect of instructional strategies on interactions, participant attitudes, and perceptions that occurred during two courses taught via interactive videoconferencing in higher education. Analysis of coded observational data, field notes, and interviews with students and instructors provided insights about the distance learning environment. Using an interaction model, the classroom interactions were grouped into the following categories: (a) learner-content, (b) learner-instructor, (c) learner-learner, and (d) learner-interface. Results showed that learner-instructor and learner-learner interactions were highest during classes which were organized as discussion sessions with specific guidelines for the content and the nature of questions on …

Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze Jan 1999

Sediment-Air Partitioning Of Hydrophobic Organic Chemicals., Guilhem De Seze

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contaminated sediments that become exposed to the air as a result of dredging or water receding are potential sources of emissions of toxic compounds to the atmosphere. Exposure models are currently being developed to assess the risk associated with this pathway of contaminant release and to design efficient remediation techniques. A critical parameter in these emission models is the equilibrium partition coefficient of the contaminant between the sediment and the air. In this study, the sediment-air equilibrium partitioning of a polymiclear aromatic hydrocarbon (phenanthrene) and a heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (dibenzofuran) was investigated. Both classes of compounds are commonly found in …

Large Magnitude Sinusoidal Voltammetry For Reversible Electrochemical Reactions., Yide Chang Jan 1999

Large Magnitude Sinusoidal Voltammetry For Reversible Electrochemical Reactions., Yide Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sinusoidal voltammetry, the current response of a simple reversible electrochemical reaction under a large magnitude sinusoidal potential, is investigated in this work. The ferricyanide/ferrocyanide (Fe(CN)6-3/-4 ) redox couple at a platinum electrode, which is known to be reversible, was measured using sinusoidal potentials. Theoretical analyses, including computer-simulation of sinusoidal voltammetry at various excitation potentials, are also presented. The results obtained are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. One remarkable advantage of sinusoidal voltammetry is that the charging current accompanying the electrode process, which is the most significant components of the noise at a fast potential scan, may be discriminated …

Application Of Barton Esters In Polymer Modification., Timothy S. Evenson Jan 1999

Application Of Barton Esters In Polymer Modification., Timothy S. Evenson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Esters of N-hydroxypyridine-2-thione, known as Barton esters, dissociate homolytically upon exposure to heat or light generating chain initiating acyloxy radicals and pyridine sulfide radicals that lead to 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide. The dominant mode of Barton ester consumption is chain transfer, yielding pyridinesulfide end groups and acyloxy radicals. Thermolysis (80°C) or photolysis (25°C) of Barton esters initiated polymerization of styrene. The polymerization rate was found to be independent of Barton ester concentration. Chain transfer to initiator controls molecular weight; the chain transfer constants for phenyl Barton ester in styrene and acrylamide are 0.96 and 0.08 respectively. Polymer end-groups were identified as an …

Soil Phosphorus Characteristics Of Natural And Created Wetlands In The Atchafalaya Delta, Louisiana., Matthew Emerson Poach

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Quantitative comparisons of artificially created and natural wetlands are typically confounded by differences in wetland age, with created wetlands being younger than their natural counterparts. Observed differences between these wetlands may be attributed to either age differences or an inability to reproduce natural wetland characteristics. The objectives of this research were to: compare the phosphorus characteristics of similarly aged, created and natural wetlands in the Atchafalaya Delta, Louisiana and determine the controls over phosphorus retention in these wetlands. A phosphorus fractionation procedure was used to identify the phosphorus fractions in sediments from natural and artificially created wetlands in the Atchafalaya …

The Solo Vocabulary Of Jazz Bassist Jimmie Blanton., Robert Nash Jan 1999

The Solo Vocabulary Of Jazz Bassist Jimmie Blanton., Robert Nash

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jimmie Blanton (1918--1942) is recognized today as a pivotal figure in the evolution of jazz double bass performance. His performances and recordings with the Duke Ellington Orchestra (and smaller ensembles connected with this unit) between 1939 and 1941 served to elevate the double bass from a limited role as time-keeper and "novelty" soloist in the rhythm section of the jazz orchestra to that of an identifiable solo voice, capable of supporting, contrasting, or blending with the reed, brass and percussion sections as dictated by musical needs. Blanton's approach to the instrument confounded the conventional notions of his era about almost …

Synthesis, Thermodynamic Behavior, And Enzymatic Properties Of Oligonucleotides Containing Nucleoside Analogs., Melissa Anne Cameron

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is on base modified nucleosides. By generating these nucleosides we hope to find information about the role of "base-stacking" in the stability of the DNA duplex and generate nucleoside analogues that could be used as conversion agents or in ambiguous positions in probes and primers. The target nucleosides included one C-nucleoside 5-(2'-deoxy-beta-D-ribofuranosyl)-2-hydroxypyrimidine and four 4-substituted pyrazole nucleosides; 1-(2'-deoxy-beta- D-ribofuranosyl)-4-iodopyrazole, 1-(2'-deoxy-beta- D-ribofuranosyl)-4-, 1-(2'-deoxy-beta- D-ribofuranosyl)-4-propynylpyrazole, and 1-(2'-deoxy-beta- D-ribofuranosyl)-4-(2-thiazolyl)pyrazole. The C-nucleoside was of interest because of its potential anti-viral and anti cancer activity and its potential to function as a "convertide". There are several potential routes for the …

The Characterization Of Oligonucleotides And Nucleic Acids Using Ribonuclease H And Mass Spectrometry., Lenore Marie Polo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The use of mass spectrometry for the characterization of nucleic acids is presented in this work. One area of research was aimed at developing a method for the characterization of pseudouridine (Psi) containing samples derivatized with N-cyclohexyl-N' -beta-(4-methylmorpholinium)methylcarbodiimide (CMC). These experiments consisted of the derivatization of a tRNA molecule with CMC followed by analysis of the sample using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. Mass spectrometric analysis of the sample revealed that the derivatization of the sample was occurring to generate a species with one CMC group. This data is significant because it demonstrates that the comparably small mass shift …
