The Use Of Supertitles By American Opera Companies., Christina Margaret Alves Jan 1991

The Use Of Supertitles By American Opera Companies., Christina Margaret Alves

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The main purpose of this monograph was to examine the use of supertitles in foreign language opera by American opera companies. Supertitles are the translation of an opera's text projected simultaneously above the stage during an opera performance. The use of supertitles is one of the most controversial issues in the opera world. Although the primary purpose is to enable the audience to understand a foreign text, there is an ongoing controversy over whether supertitles enhance an opera performance or detract from it. Many opera companies are using supertitles, but there are still those who have not made the investment …

The Differential Effects Of Either X-Irradiation Or Thermal Stress On The Two Major Cell Types Of The Blastocyst Stage Murine Embryo., Joe Steve Capehart Jan 1991

The Differential Effects Of Either X-Irradiation Or Thermal Stress On The Two Major Cell Types Of The Blastocyst Stage Murine Embryo., Joe Steve Capehart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The first objective of this investigation was to determine if either X-irradiation or thermal stress exerted differential effects on the two major cell types of the blastocyst stage murine embryo. Results of this study indicate that X-irradiation dosages of 0 rads, 500 rads, 600 rads, 700 rads, 800 rads, 900 rads or 1000 rads had no effect on the ability of treated embryos to either hatch or develop into trophoblastic outgrowths (P $<$.05). In contrast, X-irradiation treatment over the levels tested did have a detrimental effect on the ability of embryos to develop into trophblastic outgrowths possessing an ICM region (P $>$.05). X-irradiation over the levels tested had no effect on the mean two-dimensional outgrowth surface areas ($\mu$m$\sp2$) (P $>$.05). However, X-irradiation was found to have a …

Solution Adaptive Grid Procedures For High-Speed Parabolic Flows., Albert Destrehan Harvey Iii Jan 1991

Solution Adaptive Grid Procedures For High-Speed Parabolic Flows., Albert Destrehan Harvey Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A solution-adaptive grid procedure based on an error equi-distribution scheme is developed and applied to a Parabolized Navier-Stokes solver. The adaptation scheme re-distributes grid points line-by-line, with grid point motion controlled by forces analogous to tensional and torsional spring forces with the tensional spring force at a point proportional to the error estimate. Where the error estimates are large, the tensional forces become high and drive grid points to cluster in these high error estimate regions. Torsional terms are functions of the grid point positions along neighboring grid lines and provide grid smoothness and orthogonality. A method of selecting error …

Louisiana Principals' Perceptions Of Nontraditional Vocational Teachers And The Importance Of Vocational Education., Moo Yul Huh Jan 1991

Louisiana Principals' Perceptions Of Nontraditional Vocational Teachers And The Importance Of Vocational Education., Moo Yul Huh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Even though the elimination of sex bias and stereotyping has been a national priority in vocational education for a number of years, many educators or administrators still hold sex biased and stereotyped attitudes about labor force participation and have a belief that there are "men's" and "women's" jobs. A study of sources affecting sex bias and sex stereotyping of vocational teachers is critical to provide more productive programs. The local school principal typically has the greatest impact on school level employment decisions because the principal is the chief executive officer or administrator of the basic unit in the school system. …

Parallel Computation On Hypercube-Like Machines., Kyung Hee Kwon Jan 1991

Parallel Computation On Hypercube-Like Machines., Kyung Hee Kwon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The hypercube interconnection network has been recognized to be very suitable for a parallel computing architecture due to its attractive topological properties. Recently, several modified hypercubes have been propose to improve the performance of a hypercube. This dissertation deals with two modified hypercubes, the X-hypercube and the Z-cube. The X-hypercube is a variant of the hypercube, with the same amount of hardware but a diameter of only $\lceil$(n + 1)/2$\rceil$ in a hypercube of dimension n. The Z-cube has only 75 percent of the edges of a hypercube with the same number vertices and the same diameter as the hypercube. …

New Techniques In Scene Understanding And Parallel Image Processing., Krishnakumar Narayanan Jan 1991

New Techniques In Scene Understanding And Parallel Image Processing., Krishnakumar Narayanan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There has been tremendous research interest in the areas of computer and robotic vision. Scene understanding and parallel image processing are important paradigms in computer vision. New techniques are presented to solve some of the problems in these paradigms. Automatic interpretation of features in a natural scene is the focus of the first part of the dissertation. The proposed interpretation technique consists of a context dependent feature labeling algorithm using non linear probabilistic relaxation, and an expert system. Traditionally, the output of the labeling is analyzed, and then recognized by a high level interpreter. In this new approach, the knowledge …

From the stocks listed on the Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) tapes, a group of NASDAQ/NMS and NYSE stocks are chosen …

Parallel And Distributed Algorithms For A Class Of Graph-Related Computational Problems., Rajanarayanan Subbiah Jan 1991

Parallel And Distributed Algorithms For A Class Of Graph-Related Computational Problems., Rajanarayanan Subbiah

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There exist at least two models of parallel computing, namely, shared-memory and message-passing. This research addresses problems in both these types of systems, and proposes efficient parallel (Shared-Memory Model) and distributed (message-passing) algorithms for a variety of graph related computational problems. In part I, we design algorithms for three generic problems in distributed systems: set manipulation, network structure recognition and facility placement. We present optimal distributed algorithms for recognizing rectangular-mesh networks. The time and message complexity of our algorithm is linear in the number of nodes in the network. We also lay the foundation for the recognition of 2-reducible, outer-planar …

A Brooding Eloquence: Amplification And Irony In Marlowe's Dramas., Jeffery Galle Jan 1991

A Brooding Eloquence: Amplification And Irony In Marlowe's Dramas., Jeffery Galle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My subject is the relationship between rhetoric and the range of possible reaction to Marlowe's protagonists in his five major plays--Tamburlaine I and II, Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. In a very broad sense, I conceive of the rhetoric of each play in terms of opposing rhetorical forces, amplification and irony, and attempt to account for the relative intensity of amplification and irony in each play as I study the rhetoric of the protagonist. One strategy, amplification, entails the investment of a major character with logical arguments from invention, effective arrangement of ideas from disposition, and …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Reaction Injection Molding., Yu-Wen Lo Jan 1991

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Reaction Injection Molding., Yu-Wen Lo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since increasing more complex RIM molds are being used in industry, the goal of this research is to develop a model which can be used to predict the dynamic filling front, hot spots, and air entrapment in molds. In this research a method to simulate the RIM process by considering both the filling and curing stages in variously shaped molds for unsteady state three dimensional state cases was developed. This model can be used to predict not only the temperature and conversion changes with time but also the front position changing as a function time. Using given physical and chemical …

The potential of tropical Africanized honey bees to survive through winter was investigated to predict their possible geographical range and density in the United States. Experiments were conducted in cold rooms, at high elevations in tropical mountains, and during a winter season in Germany. The performance and survival of isolated groups of workers and of intact Africanized colonies were compared with those of European origin, and in some experiments, with those of hybrid crosses. In cold rooms, groups of 40 g of Africanized workers exposed to air currents at 15$\sp\circ$C aggregated in different positions and in tighter conformations than European …

Quantal Description Of Atomic Diamagnetism: The Quasi-Landau Resonances., Qiaoling Wang Jan 1991

Quantal Description Of Atomic Diamagnetism: The Quasi-Landau Resonances., Qiaoling Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We describe atomic hydrogen diamagnetism within the framework of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Our theoretical studies have used three descriptions: an adiabatic description, a multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) description using an ab initio R-matrix approach, and a model description. The analysis has conclusively demonstrated that the diamagnetic spectrum can be viewed as a perturbed Rydberg spectrum. The adiabatic analysis provides a crude but useful picture to see the overall channel structure and the nature of the perturbing configurations, where the quasi-Landau resonances are the lowest states in each Landau channel which will perturb high Rydberg states in lower Landau channels …

An Investigation Of The Laryngeal System As The Resonance Source Of The Singer's Formant., Rebecca Finley Detweiler Jan 1991

An Investigation Of The Laryngeal System As The Resonance Source Of The Singer's Formant., Rebecca Finley Detweiler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since its introduction in 1974, Johan Sundberg's model of the laryngeal system as the resonance source of the singer's formant (Fs) has gained wide acceptance. There have heretofore been no studies directly testing its validity in vivo. The purpose of this study was to undertake a direct test of that hypothesis, utilizing as subjects professional male singers trained in the western Classical tradition. The vocal behaviors of three trained singer-subjects were evaluated during modal and pulse register phonation via magnetic resonance imaging (M.R.I.), strobolaryngoscopy, and acoustical analysis. Dr. Sundberg's hypothesis rests upon two premises: (1) that the laryngeal system is …

Structural And Functional Studies Of Carbohydrates., Shirish Trymbak Dhume Jan 1991

Structural And Functional Studies Of Carbohydrates., Shirish Trymbak Dhume

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Plasmodium falciparum is the parasite responsible for a major loss of human life due to malaria. The biochemistry of invasion of the parasite into human red cells is the subject of much study and controversy. The receptor mediated endocytosis of the parasite into the red cells is postulated to involve at least two major receptors on the cells. Earlier work focussed on glycophorin of red cells as a likely receptor. The present study focussed on the role of erythroglycan, the N-linked carbohydrate chain of band 3 of human red cells in the invasion process. Erythroglycan showed high levels of inhibition …

An Examination Of Semiotic Theories Of Accounting Accruals., Harlan Lynn Etheridge Jan 1991

An Examination Of Semiotic Theories Of Accounting Accruals., Harlan Lynn Etheridge

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two theories of accounting accruals form the core of this study. The theory of the functions of accounting accruals is induced from observation of accounting accruals. One type of accounting accrual reflects incomplete transactions under a system of cash receipts and cash disbursements. The function of these accruals is to convey data about economic events associated with incomplete cash transactions. These accruals are referred to as syntactically redundant accruals. The second type of accounting accrual presents messages in a different format than their counterparts in a system of cash receipts and cash disbursements. The function of these accruals is to …

Comparative Evaluation Of Exact Extreme Value Stochastic Flood Model For Mixed Populations., Senarath T. B Ekanayake Jan 1991

Comparative Evaluation Of Exact Extreme Value Stochastic Flood Model For Mixed Populations., Senarath T. B Ekanayake

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two alternative formulations of the exact extreme value stochastic flood model are presented in explaining the behaviour of observed flood series resulting from mixed climatological processes. As a marginal distribution for flood exceedances, a more flexible Weibull distribution is introduced in the place of the traditional exponential distribution. The asymptotic predictive performances of both the exponential and Weibull model formulations are evaluated in terms of relative bias (BIAS) and relative root mean square error (RMSE) of quantile estimation. The model with Weibull marginal performs well over the exponential for population conditions shown to exist in most of the observed flood …

In Vitro Studies On Cigarette Smoke-Mediated Damage To Human Alpha-1-Proteinase Inhibitor., Mark Dennis Evans Jan 1991

In Vitro Studies On Cigarette Smoke-Mediated Damage To Human Alpha-1-Proteinase Inhibitor., Mark Dennis Evans

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect, in vitro, of water soluble components of the particulate phase of cigarette smoke on the elastase inhibitory capacity (EIC) of human alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor ($\alpha\sb1$PI) is studied. Basic features of aqueous cigarette tar extract-mediated damage to $\alpha\sb1$PI are presented, as are mechanistic studies addressing the identities of damaging species and the nature of damage to $\alpha\sb1$PI. Aqueous cigarette tar extract (ACT) causes a slow loss of EIC, and retains this $\alpha\sb1$ PI damaging ability for hours. The damage to $\alpha\sb1$PI by ACT is dependent on its hydrogen peroxide content. Hydroxyl radicals or hypervalent metal species in the homogeneous phase …

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett Jan 1991

The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three children's responses to three research-composed narratives were investigated. Participants were eight-year-old girls from the lower S.E.S., African-American culture. Study focuses on the composing processes used to write three children's stories and the responses of children to the stories. The author's intended meaning was compared with the children's construction of meaning. After each story was read aloud, response was elicited by each participant retelling the story and answering open-ended interview questions. One week later the participant was asked to retell the story a second time to determine changes in concept of story. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory methodology. …

Coupling Of Electronic And Nuclear Degrees Of Freedom In Diatomic Molecules: A Quantum Defect Study., Hong Gao Jan 1991

Coupling Of Electronic And Nuclear Degrees Of Freedom In Diatomic Molecules: A Quantum Defect Study., Hong Gao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in electron scattering from a homonuclear diatomic molecule has been studied using the frame transformation method in conjunction with the multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT). Exploration of non-adiabatic effects resulting from large electron-molecule distances, resonances, and dissociation shows that the interconversion of energy between electronic and nuclear motion takes place mainly in the vicinity of the molecular target where the outermost electron couples strongly to the nuclei. MQDT enables us to describe these effects based on a body-frame quantum defect function, which can be obtained either from a short-range ab initio …

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Syntactic Skills Used In Translating Natural Language Sentences Into Algebraic Equations., Elizabeth Devalcourt Gray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine how a competent person translates a natural language sentence into an algebraic equation. A current theory of how translation occurs is espoused by a group of cognitive scientists who propose that the competent translator uses only conceptual strategies in the translation process. I propose and investigate an alternate theory that the translation skills of a competent student are based on a syntactic analysis and syntactic manipulation of the sentence. In most cases such direct, syntactic translation processes will suffice, but for a small minority of sentence types a decision must be made …

Using a research design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative assessment procedures, the study examined prewriting, drafting, and revision practices at two levels. In Level I, the first and final drafts of the 1,467 students were analyzed using a scoring model derived …

An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield Jan 1991

An Analysis Of Educational Films: An African-American Perspective. (Volumes I And Ii)., Brenda Garibaldi Hatfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Historically African-Americans have been marginalized and subordinated in critical discourse and research in curriculum studies and educational media. There is a vital need for research directed toward African-Americans as subjects and viewers of media used in school curricula. Cultural theorists in curriculum and educational media studies are interested in knowing how social, political and ideological messages are produced and circulated in society, and how student audiences use them to make sense of their experiences. The purpose of this research is to contribute to a better understanding of how racial representations and social identities are coded and produced in educational films, …

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head Jan 1991

Discriminating Borderline Personality Disorder (Bpd) From Major Depression And Refining Diagnostic Criteria For Bpd., Betty Susan Head

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Investigators have sought to clarify the Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) category by comparing it with other personality disorders (e.g., Clarkin, Widiger, Frances, Hurt, & Gilmore, 1983; Zanarini, Gunderson, Grankenburg, & Chauncey, 1990), schizophrenia (see review by Siever & Gunderson, 1978), and major depression (see review by Gunderson & Phillips, 1991). The current study investigated the discriminative validity of the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) borderline criteria and qualitative differences in depression between borderlines (BPD) and patients diagnosed with major depressive episode (MDE). The 100 subjects were inpatients (n = 94) and outpatients (n = 6), assigned to one of three …
