Bifad Title Xii Coordinators' Perceptions Regarding Sustainable Agriculture., Lydia Vidjiawatie Ori Jan 1992

Bifad Title Xii Coordinators' Perceptions Regarding Sustainable Agriculture., Lydia Vidjiawatie Ori

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of coordinators with the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) of sustainable agriculture, and practices and the ideas needed to promote it. The study also sought to verify Crosson's model of agricultural productivity and land potential. A three-part, field tested questionnaire was mailed to all 157 Title XII coordinators at Land Grant Universities throughout the United States. Of the 103 returned questionnaires a 58.6% usable response rate was obtained. An additional 21 responses obtained from nonrespondents reached by phone showed no significant differences from mail respondents. Descriptive statistics, Cramer's …

Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell Jan 1992

Community Versus The Imperial Mind: Images Of Civil Strife In Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun"., Henry Michael W Russell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun allegorically represents the crisis of civil order in the American Republic in the 1850s foreshadowing the Civil War that erupted a year after the novel's publication. Hawthorne's last completed romance, set in Rome, suggests Americans must judge themselves against the community and continuity embodied in the European culture they had recently cast off. Challenging Emerson's doctrine that man may have an original relationship to history and the Creator, Hawthorne undermines the Founders' great idea: that an assembly of men could discover and formulate--in an act of the human mind--self-evident, inalienable rights that govern political and …

Echoes Of The Past In Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale", "Bouvard Et Pecuchet" And "Salammbo"., Deborah Lee Trott Pierce Jan 1992

Echoes Of The Past In Flaubert's "L'Education Sentimentale", "Bouvard Et Pecuchet" And "Salammbo"., Deborah Lee Trott Pierce

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Flaubert's novels demonstrate how the nineteenth-century's self-conception was defined by a disciplined obsession with the past. By looking at History, past and present, Flaubert's novels attempt to comprehend the individual and his evolving social reality. As evidenced in L'Education sentimentale, Bouvard et Pecuchet and Salammbo, one of Flaubert's main concerns is that of man's personal connection with history. The historian and the novelist both work within the constraints imposed upon them by language. Both take from the world around them to construct a narrative that in many ways is similar. By the fusion of the familiar in his work the …

The Effects Of Politically Biased Performance Appraisal On Ratee Job Attitudes And Desire To Respond To Feedback., Al Charles Schnur Jan 1992

The Effects Of Politically Biased Performance Appraisal On Ratee Job Attitudes And Desire To Respond To Feedback., Al Charles Schnur

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relationships of politics in appraisal and political use of appraisal to ratee attitudes and desire to respond to appraisal feedback. Hypotheses were developed from research on politics in appraisal, the feedback process model of Ilgen, Fisher, and Taylor, 1979, and equity theory (Adams, 1965). Negative relationships between politics and dependent variables were predicted. Two studies were conducted. Study 1 used 97 professionals in two organizations to test the effects of hypothetical political use of appraisal on their attitudes and desire to respond to appraisal feedback. Study 2 used 98 professionals in an insurance company to …

Banach Space Valued Stochastic Differential Equations., Fariborz Asadian Jan 1992

Banach Space Valued Stochastic Differential Equations., Fariborz Asadian

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Let $W(t,\omega)$ be a Brownian motion on an abstract Wiener space (i,H,B) corresponding to the canonical normal distribution on H. The well known theorem of Girsanov is proved for such a process with the perturbing term taking values in the Hilbert space H. Consider the stochastic integral equation $\xi(t) = x+\int\sbsp{0}{t}A(s,\xi(s))dW(s)+\int\sbsp{0}{t}\sigma(s,\xi(s))ds$ where x is in $B,\ A(\cdot,\cdot)$ and $\sigma(\cdot,\cdot)$ are bounded continuous functions from $\lbrack 0,\infty)\times B$ to $I+L\sb2(H)$ and H respectively. Here $L\sb2(H)$ denotes the collection of Hilbert Schmidt operators on H. Furthermore, suppose for every $s\ge 0$ the restriction of $A(s,\cdot)$ to H is invertible and $A(s,\cdot)$ and …

Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Among Mentally Retarded Children., Virginia Elaine Fee Jan 1992

Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder Among Mentally Retarded Children., Virginia Elaine Fee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Teachers completed the CTRS-39 on 100 boys assigned to one of four groups based on IQ and scores on a DSM-III-R checklist of the symptoms for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (AD-HD). The groups included a normal control group, children with AD-HD, mentally retarded children, and mentally retarded children with AD-HD. There were no significant differences between the AD-HD group and the mentally retarded AD-HD group on all but one of the Conners' Factors and no significant differences on the IOWA Conners' Scales that were extracted from the CTRS-39. Mentally retarded children in general were found to be more anxious than their …

Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink Jan 1992

Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I explore the relationship between partisan votes and partisan seat allocation in U.S. state lower-house elections. Specifically, I measure the representational form (the rate of partisan seat changes given particular partisan vote changes) and partisan bias (asymmetry in the seats-votes relationship) of 441 lower-house state legislative elections in 46 states from 1968 to 1987. I then test a number of hypotheses that have been advanced to explain variation in representational form and partisan bias. Values for representational form and partisan bias are generated by creating simulations from actual election results. I simulate seat gains made by Republicans given one percent …

Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett Jan 1992

Improving Long-Term Adherence To Fluid Restrictions In Hemodialysis Patients., Kevin Dale Everett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goals of this project were to investigate factors that predicted nonadherence to fluid restrictions for patients on hemodialysis, and to evaluate a relatively long-term behavioral intervention to improve adherence to recommended fluid requirements. One hundred forty-one subjects were recruited from outpatient dialysis clinics in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the prediction study, several medical and demographic variables as well as psychological variables of health locus of control, depressed mood, and social support were placed into a regression equation to determine the variance of fluid noncompliance predicted. It was found that variables of being male, educated, younger, and having an external …

Preschool Social Skills: The Development Of Prosocial Interactions., Mary Boone Vonbrock Treuting Jan 1992

Preschool Social Skills: The Development Of Prosocial Interactions., Mary Boone Vonbrock Treuting

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined differing perceptions of teachers and parents pertaining to frequency and importance of social skills and problem behaviors in preschool children. Specifically, the present investigation considered social skills of preschool children considered to be At-Risk for educationally handicapping conditions as well as a group of Typical preschool children. Both teacher and parent ratings on the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) (Gresham & Elliott, 1990) and the revised Conners Rating Scales (CRS), (Goyette, Conners, & Ulrich, 1978) were obtained from a sample of 95 preschool children. Fifty-two subjects were enrolled in an at-risk preschool program (i.e., Head Start) and …

Contact Phase: Forms Of Postmodernism. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Owen Crumb Jan 1992

Contact Phase: Forms Of Postmodernism. (Volumes I And Ii)., Michael Owen Crumb

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines variant mimetic strategies as the basis for a major dialectic within postmodern culture. The method applies and sometimes extends largely accepted theoretical statements on literary form. This synthesis provides an accessible, if at times complex, schema for organizing types, genres, and postmodern products based on image production and forms of spatial/temporal discourse. An investigation of several theorists and artists grounds a theory of literary and cinematic expressionism as the basis for postmodern culture, with particular emphasis given to the interpenetration of literary and cinematic styles in the twentieth century. An aesthetic dialectic emerges in the movement toward …

Attributional Style For Anger-Provoking Situations In Adolescents: Race, Sex, And Ses Variables., C. Diane Billings Findley Jan 1992

Attributional Style For Anger-Provoking Situations In Adolescents: Race, Sex, And Ses Variables., C. Diane Billings Findley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Black Americans exhibit significantly more aggressive behaviors than do white Americans and these aggressive acts are most likely to be directed toward other blacks, frequently in response to relatively trivial matters (Bell, 1987; Curtis, 1974). Aggression most often occurs in areas of high population density, poverty, and low social status, suggesting that socioeconomic status is an important variable in aggressive behavior (Centerwall, 1984; Willie, 1983). Attribution refers to the perception or inference of causes of self or others' behavior. Attributional theory, which is concerned with the consequences of attributions rather than the attributions themselves (Kelley & Michela, 1980), has been …

High Drama At The Little Theatre, 1730-1737: Henry Fielding, Eliza Haywood, Charlotte Charke, And Company. (Volumes I And Ii)., Polly Stevens Fields Jan 1992

High Drama At The Little Theatre, 1730-1737: Henry Fielding, Eliza Haywood, Charlotte Charke, And Company. (Volumes I And Ii)., Polly Stevens Fields

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Staging works unaccepted by and unacceptable to the establishment, Henry Fielding, Eliza Haywood, Charlotte Charke, and company produced a series of protest dramas at the Little Theatre in the Haymarket between 1730 and 1737. The playwrights deliberately ruptured theatric traditions and boldly presented plays challenging not only the mainstream theatre, but the current social system. Negating the age-old doctrine that tragedy properly concerns the great man, and comedy reviles the low-born, the playwrights at the Little Theatre in both their tragedies and comedies enlarged the province of the drama to include the ordinary human with real problems. By this means, …

Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope Jan 1992

Severe Chronic Pain Across The Lifespan: Is Age Related To Response To Treatment?, Susan Jacqueline Kotler-Cope

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study evaluated the relationship of age to various aspects of the chronic pain syndrome before and after participation in a multidisciplinary 21-day inpatient treatment program for chronic pain at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California. Subjects were 135 male servicemen and veterans, ranging in age from 23 to 71 years. Age was significantly related to number of medical problems and duration of pain, but not number of pain sites, surgeries, or medications. While age was negatively, but weakly associated with cognitive aspects of depression on admission, it was not significantly related to either total score on …

Metaphor Within/Without Metaphysics: Nietzsche, Heidegger, And Derrida., Jonggab Kim Jan 1992

Metaphor Within/Without Metaphysics: Nietzsche, Heidegger, And Derrida., Jonggab Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The contemporary preoccupation with metaphor lies in its capability of deconstructing and disempowering metaphysics, and of creating a logic of uncertainty or a Derridian logic of supplements in opposition to the logic of identity and of non-contradiction. As a figure of speech saying one thing but meaning something else, metaphor contains in itself a certain alterity and otherness which resists a logical identity as well as a systematic philosophy. In my study of metaphor in the texts of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida, I inquire into the problematic relation or difference between philosophy and metaphor, focusing on how the former is …

Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee Jan 1992

Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, we study the Fourier transform and heat equation in the white noise set-up. It is known that the Fourier transform ${\cal F}$ can be defined on the space (${\cal S}$)* of generalized white noise functionals. We prove that ${\cal F}$ is the adjoint of a certain linear operator on the space (${\cal S}$) of test functionals. On the other hand, it is known that if f is a bounded Lip-1 function on an abstract Wiener space with Gaussian measures $P\sb{t},$ then $u(t)=P\sb{t}f$ solves the heat equation ${d\over dt}u(t)={1\over2}\Delta\sb{G}u(t)$ with initial condition u(0) = f where $\Delta\sb{G}$ is …

Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann Jan 1992

Assessing The Process Of Therapeutic Change In The Eating Disorders., Erich George Duchmann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Comparative outcome and process research approaches have not yielded a complete understanding of the beneficial processes of psychotherapy. A recent approach to studying psychotherapy has involved the study of general stages of change that occur during all types of psychotherapy which are positively related to treatment outcome. The purpose of the present investigation was to test a stage of change model for the treatment of the eating disorders anorexia and bulimia nervosa. A review of the literature suggested that there were four general symptom domains that may be related to positive outcome in the treatment of eating disorders. Based on …

Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim Jan 1992

Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research was to study the effects of fatigue on lifting acceleration and posture caused by repetitive manual lifting. Electromyogram, oxygen consumption and heart rate were used as indices of a subject's physiological fatigue. Data were collected for a period of two hours of continuous lifting, at a rate of 4 lifts per minute using the free-style posture. A box of fixed dimensions (30cm x 30cm x 20cm) and fixed weight (15.9 Kg) was used as load. It was found that the average load acceleration increased with work duration. Peak acceleration was found to be maximum in …

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee Jan 1992

Phase Equilibria Of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Hydrocarbon Mixtures., Hyo-Guk Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The phase equilibria of supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrocarbon mixtures were studied. Correlation techniques for vapor-liquid and solid-fluid equilibria were studied for binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures using existing experimental data. Experimental investigation and correlation of the experimental data were carried out for solid-liquid equilibria of light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures, and CO$\sb2,$ light and heavy hydrocarbon mixtures. A new technique of vapor-liquid equilibrium calculation by the activity coefficient method was developed and applied to binary CO$\sb2$ and hydrocarbon mixtures. The extrapolated vapor pressure of CO$\sb2$ was used for calculation of the fugacity of pure hypothetical liquid CO$\sb2$ and for …

Three Essays On International Linkages Of The Korean Economy., Jai-Ki Lee Jan 1992

Three Essays On International Linkages Of The Korean Economy., Jai-Ki Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay investigates whether the long run version of purchasing power parity (PPP) holds between Korea and its two major trading partners--the U.S. and Japan. The PPP relationship is examined using cointegration tests, which are proper to see the departures from the long run equilibrium. The second essay examines the empirical relationship between real exchange rates and interest rate differentials in the Korean-U.S. as well as the Korean-Japanese economies. This relationship is also examined using cointegration tests. The third essay examines how foreign economic shocks affect the Korean economy and analyzes the channels …

Transgenic Rice Plants Containing A Chlorsulfuron Resistance Gene, A Hygromycin Resistance Gene And The Maizeactivator Transposable Element., Zhijian Li Jan 1992

Transgenic Rice Plants Containing A Chlorsulfuron Resistance Gene, A Hygromycin Resistance Gene And The Maizeactivator Transposable Element., Zhijian Li

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A mutant Arabidopsis acetolactate synthase (ALS) gene csr-1-1, conferring chlorsulfuron resistance, was tested in transgenic rice to develop an alternative selectable marker for rice transformation. Up to a 200-fold increase in chlorsulfuron resistance was detected in transgenic rice calli expressing the mutant ALS gene under control of the CaMV 35S promoter. Efficient selection of resistant protoplast colonies was achieved by using 10 to 50 nM of chlorsulfuron after transformation with the 35S/ALS gene. Fertile transgenic rice plants were successfully recovered from 35S/ALS-containing transformants. These results demonstrated that the 35S/ALS gene could be used as a selectable marker gene in rice …

The Hydrothermal System Of Nevado Del Ruiz Volcano, Colombia., Dina Areli Larios Lopez Jan 1992

The Hydrothermal System Of Nevado Del Ruiz Volcano, Colombia., Dina Areli Larios Lopez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nevado del Ruiz is an andesitic stratovolcano located 150 km northwest of Bogota, Colombia. This volcano is characterized by a large hydrothermal system with two very distinctive types of water: acid sulfate waters, and bicarbonate and neutral chloride waters. The waters within each group fall in well-defined lines on compositional cross plots. There is an apparent lack of mixing between the two water types. The acid sulfate waters appear to be related to the north-west striking and seismically active Villamaria-Termales fault. The neutral chloride waters are clustered to the west and south-east of the volcano. The bicarbonate waters are more …

Control Of Phytoplankton Production In A Shallow, Turbid Estuary., Christopher J. Madden Jan 1992

Control Of Phytoplankton Production In A Shallow, Turbid Estuary., Christopher J. Madden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Water column primary production and chlorophyll were sampled between 1986-1991 in Fourleague Bay, LA, a shallow (1.5 m), river-dominated estuary that is extremely turbid (K$\sb{\rm D}$ = 4.44 m$\sp{-1}$). A high speed system for continuous flow-through sampling, Dataflow$\sp\copyright$, was developed to measure physicochemical variables and in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence at high temporal (1 s) and spatial (5 m) resolution from a small boat. Phytoplankton net primary production (NPP) was measured using an incubator which rotated bottles to prevent settling of the contents. NPP was found to be artificially increased by 10-83% at high light levels in non-rotated bottles when cells …

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr Jan 1992

Politics, The Nationality Problem, And The Habsburg Army, 1848-1914. (Volumes I And Ii)., Lohr Eugene Miller Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The army of the Habsburg Monarchy was the central institution of the Habsburg state, and it embodied the ideal of non-national, dynastic rule. The army leadership was aware of the dangers of nationalism, but in the period between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the revolutions of 1848, no attempt was made to overcome the danger of national disaffection. The revolutions of 1848 caused the army to remove Hungarian and Italian units from their homelands, but, despite the suspicion in which they were held, these troops fought well in the wars of 1859 and 1866. The financial weakness of …

A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief Jan 1992

A Study On Low-Frequency Variability In Current And Sea Level In The Lombok Strait And Adjacent Region., Dharma Arief

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current meter data in the mid-Lombok Strait region in 1985 show that 42% of the variance in the currents is within the intraseasonal frequency band (10-100 day-1). It is about two times the variance of the tidal currents. This intraseasonal variability appeared as episodic northward flows of 20 to 80 cm/s recurring every 20 to 60 days. Our data indicate these northward flows are driven by episodes of sea-level rise south of the Lombok Strait which are controlled by large scale westerly wind events in the Southeastern Indian Ocean. These northward flow events occur almost simultaneously with either a cyclone …

The Role Of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Glycoprotein Iii In Molecular Pathogenesis And Immunomodulation., Katherine Marie Byrne Jan 1992

The Role Of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Glycoprotein Iii In Molecular Pathogenesis And Immunomodulation., Katherine Marie Byrne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) is the pathogenic agent for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis. Current vaccines to protect against infection have serious disadvantages to producers and have been implicated in epizootic outbreaks. The virus has also been shown to cause suppression of the immune system. BHV-1 vaccines could be improved by identifying and genetically deleting those aspects of the virus responsible for immunosuppression and providing a marker within the genome which would distinguish the vaccine strain from wild types in the case of disease outbreaks. This study examined the role of gIII in viral infection and immunosuppression. This was accomplished by expressing full …

Wave-Forced Hydrogeology And Diagenesis, Tague Reef, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands., Brian Leslie Carter Jan 1992

Wave-Forced Hydrogeology And Diagenesis, Tague Reef, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands., Brian Leslie Carter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Wave driven pressure variations in reef porewater were used to investigate the physical processes that affect early marine carbonate cementation in a bank-barrier reef. Cores taken along a transect, and porewater geochemistry sampled from wells were used to characterize sedimentary and geochemical environments. The cores show an Acropora palmata framework with a patchily cemented sandy matrix composes the forereef and reef crest, with dominantly loose sediments in the backreef. Hydraulic conductivities are approximately 1 $\times$ 10$\sp{-4}$ m/s. The wave climate is moderate, with up to 75 % wave height attenuation across the reef crest. Porewater pressure variations correspond to surface …

Reasoning Using Biological Content: Relationships Among Evidence, Theory, And Interpretation., Catherine Lee Cummins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical sampling was used to select 30 high school biology and college zoology students who examined a simulation involving island biogeography. The literature base for the study was scientific reasoning, problem solving, and prescientific conceptions. The research questions were answered using qualitative and quantitative methods. The first research question was: What number and what type of variables would be used to evaluate biological data? The students used 19 categories of variables, and the most frequently used were size, distance, and food. The second research question was: Will students use the controlling variables strategy in this reasoning task? Only four students …

Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton Jan 1992

Cultural Studies And The Multicultural Curriculum., Mary Susan Huddleston Edgerton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. It is my intention to bring discussions about marginality and essentialism from literary theory, feminist psychoanalytic theory and poststructuralist philosophy more explicitly into the conversation about multicultural curriculum theorizing. In this study I have attempted to further develop this conversation around notions of "translation" as generated by philosophers Michel Serres (1982) and John Rajchmann (1991) …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Within the broader issue of teacher education, the focus of this study is on one of the most neglected areas of inquiry in the field of foreign languages, the preservice field experience, and the development of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching. The following questions were specifically addressed: (1) What perspectives of foreign language teaching do student teachers hold upon completion of their program of university courses? (2) Is there an alteration of student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during their student teaching semester? (3) What factors appear to influence student teachers' perspectives of foreign language teaching during …

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan Jan 1992

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of organoclay adsorption on the leaching performance of solidified organic wastes was researched. Adsorption isotherms were developed for the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), nitrobenzene (NB), and phenol by five different organoclays. Simulated liquid wastes containing DCB, NB, and phenol were solidified utilizing various combinations of Type I Portland cement and the five organoclays. The ratio of cement/clay utilized in each solidification matrix varied from 3/2 to 13/2. Linear and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were utilized to predict the leaching performance of samples cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The ratio of the actual leachate concentrations compared to …
