Mass Transfer Of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene And Lower Chlorinated Benzenes From Sediment Into Water., Marti Charleen Blad Jan 2001

Mass Transfer Of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene And Lower Chlorinated Benzenes From Sediment Into Water., Marti Charleen Blad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bioremediation and phytoremediation are in their infancy and this research addresses concerns for application of these technologies. This laboratory and mathematical modeling effort predicts the pollutant flux from soils and sediments to the overlying waters. Little work has been done on transport in surface waters such as the slow moving and stagnant areas of the southern U.S. Mass transfer is a proposed rate limiting factor for biological transformation when using phytoremediation or natural attenuation. The research quantified mass transport of two dfferent contaminants, TNT and chlorinated benzenes, under different advective conditions. The TNT study was part of a "riffle-bed reactor" …

Comparison Of Four Screening Procedures For Identifying Students For Special Education: Validation Of Problem Validation Screening., Amanda Mathany Vanderheyden Jan 2001

Comparison Of Four Screening Procedures For Identifying Students For Special Education: Validation Of Problem Validation Screening., Amanda Mathany Vanderheyden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four screening methods were compared to determine the extent to which each method accurately identified students who exhibited math and reading problems severe enough to warrant a full psycho-educational assessment for special education eligibility determination. Methods examined were teacher referral, two subtests from the Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills, Revised, the Developmental Reading Assessment, and a new screening measure called "Problem Validation Screening" (PVS). PVS consisted of three components: classwide curriculum-based measurement probes in math and reading, performance/skill deficit assessment, and a brief instructional session. All students enrolled in first and second grade classes at a participating school were exposed …

Plant Uptake Of Desorption Resistant Organic Chemicals From Sediments., Cesar Miguel Gomez Hermosillo Jan 2001

Plant Uptake Of Desorption Resistant Organic Chemicals From Sediments., Cesar Miguel Gomez Hermosillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two types of wetland plants, a woody species, black willow ( Salix nigra), and a non-woody, the macrophyte three-square bulrush (Scirpus olneyi), were used in laboratory studies to evaluate relationships between sorption, plant uptake, translocation and transpiration of phenanthrene, a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and chlorobenzene, a model chlorinated benzene from the reversible and desorption-resistant compartment of a sediment for Phenanthrene (PHEN) and a wetland soil for chlorobenzene (CB). The wetland soil is from The Petro Processors Inc. site (PPI), a 77-acre CERCLA facility located about 10 miles north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Other studies have evaluated the plant uptake …

Obstacles In Recruiting African Americans For Clinical Trials., Betty Monroe Kennedy Jan 2001

Obstacles In Recruiting African Americans For Clinical Trials., Betty Monroe Kennedy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Previous abusive clinical trials have caused several obstacles in recruiting African Americans for clinical trials today. The memory of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study alone remains a hard pill to swallow and is a constant hindrance to recruiting potential African Americans specifically males, for clinical trials. The basic trust that African Americans have for physician researchers, U.S. government doctors, U.S. government-sponsored research, and biomedical research in general has been seriously, although not irrevocably, breached. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs African Americans have that support decisions to either participate or not …

Testing Theories Of Government Growth In The Fifty States, 1945 To 1998., Branwell Dubose Ravenel Kapeluck Jan 2001

Testing Theories Of Government Growth In The Fifty States, 1945 To 1998., Branwell Dubose Ravenel Kapeluck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores the determinants of government growth in the American states. Understanding the causes of public sector growth is important as the administration of government programs is increasingly devolved to the states. Past research has typically been on national-level growth. However, the variety in state institutional structures, resource bases, and population needs makes for an ideal "comparative laboratory." With some exceptions, state-level studies have had a public finance approach that often exclude relevant political and demographic factors that can lead to increased public sector size. My analysis of state government growth tests thirteen models covering both traditional political explanations …

The Development Of An Instrument To Assess Strategical Information Processing Style., Beverly Allain Farrell Jan 2001

The Development Of An Instrument To Assess Strategical Information Processing Style., Beverly Allain Farrell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Underpinned on the theories of individual differences and the information processing paradigm, the author hypothesized that there were five different strategical information processing styles (SIPS) that individuals prefer to use when processing information. The five constructs are visuo-spatial, analytical, social, categorical, and verbal. Based on this hypothesis, the researcher developed a self-assessment instrument containing specific measurable descriptors for each of the five hypothesized constructs. However, in this study the empirical evidence verified only four strategical information processing styles: visuo-spatial, analytical, social, and categorical. Although the verbal style is theoretically appealing, it did not prove to be a valid construct in …

The Anxious *Double: Twins In Plays Of The 1970s, 1980s, And 1990s., Shellie Kaye O'Neal Jan 2001

The Anxious *Double: Twins In Plays Of The 1970s, 1980s, And 1990s., Shellie Kaye O'Neal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Twin characters have consistently appeared in dramatic literature throughout history. Playwrights from Shakespeare to Goldoni have employed twins in works which usually rely upon the device of mistaken identity. However, twin characters who have appeared in plays of the last thirty years have been employed with more weighty intentions. This dissertation analyzes recent playwrights' portrayals of twins and the playwrights' detailed explorations of the anxieties which drive the twins' relationships with each other and society. Recent playwrights have also employed twins to symbolize fears peripheral to the phenomenon of twins: anxieties which plagued these three decades play heavily into these …

Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster., John Mark Waggener Jan 2001

Two Splice Variants Of Nopp140 In Drosophila Melanogaster., John Mark Waggener

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The activities of non-ribosomal nucleolar proteins are now understood to be important for the normal functions of both nucleoli and C&barbelow;ajal B&barbelow;odies (CBs). Although these proteins have been studied extensively in other eukaryotes, knowledge of non-ribosomal nucleolar proteins in Drosophila melanogaster lags far behind. The n&barbelow;ucleo&barbelow;lar p&barbelow;hosphop&barbelow;rotein of 140 kDa (Nopp140) may function to shuttle box C/D and box H/ACA s&barbelow;mall n&barbelow;ucleo&barbelow;lar (sno)RNAs from the nucleus to the nucleolus, where they function in the 2 '-O-methylation and pseudouridylation of rRNA, respectively. Nopp140 homologues have been described in rat, human, Xenopus laevis , and yeast. This dissertation describes the cloning of …

On K-Conjugacy Classes Of Maximal Tori In Semi-Simple Algebraic Groups., Uroyoan Ramon-Emeterio Walker Jan 2001

On K-Conjugacy Classes Of Maximal Tori In Semi-Simple Algebraic Groups., Uroyoan Ramon-Emeterio Walker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An attempt was made to make this a self-contained reading. The first three chapters are intended to provide the necessary background. Chapter one develops the tools needed from Galois Cohomology. Chapter two is a brief description of involutions, and in chapter three we define the notion of (linear) algebraic group, we give some examples and discuss some of their properties. In chapter four, we discuss some variants of the classical Skolem-Noether theorem, requiring only that the subalgebra have a unique faithful representation of full degree over a separable closure. We verify that we can extend every isomorphism to the whole …

Material Properties And Characteristics For Development Of An Expert System For Coal -Tar Sealers., James Edwin Shoenberger Jan 2001

Material Properties And Characteristics For Development Of An Expert System For Coal -Tar Sealers., James Edwin Shoenberger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Coal-tar sealers are used to protect asphalt pavements from damage by fuel spillage. The durability of these coal-tar sealers has been limited by the formation of cracks that occur in both in trafficked and non-trafficked areas and in all climatic regions. This cracking severely limits the useful life of the coal-tar sealer. Various coal-tar mixtures were evaluated through existing standard test methods. The mixtures varied through the source of the coal-tar emulsion, amount of aggregate, and amount of polymer used in the mixtures. The material properties of these mixtures were determined through curing, thermal, bending, tensile and stress-relaxation testing. The …

The Effects Of Segregation And Poverty On Latino Homicide Victimization In The United States., Catherine Elizabeth Burton Jan 2001

The Effects Of Segregation And Poverty On Latino Homicide Victimization In The United States., Catherine Elizabeth Burton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There has been a great deal of research investigating the relationship between crime and the structural features of urban communities. A number of studies have sought to determine whether pervasive poverty and social isolation are associated with the incidence of homicide among urban populations. Unfortunately, most studies have focused exclusively on African Americans, Anglos, or both. Furthermore, of the handful of studies that have examined Latino homicide, most have been focused on limited geographical areas. This study addresses the need for research focusing specifically on the relation of social and economic structural conditions to Latino homicide victimization rates. It does …

A Treatment-Based Reading Assessment., Gary Joseph Duhon Jr Jan 2001

A Treatment-Based Reading Assessment., Gary Joseph Duhon Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Each year a large number of students are identified as having problems in reading. The methodology for the identification of reading problems has been established and in practice for several years, however, the tools necessary for the identification of remediation procedures appropriate for the individual student lack this level of refinement. This study is an attempt at refining current assessment practices for the purpose of identifying remediation procedures that are effective on the level of the individual student. A conceptual model of learning (instructional hierarchy) was combined with a treatment based functional assessment methodology, resulting in a behavior analytic approach …

The Role Of Kernel Epicuticular Wax In Zea Mays Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Production., You-Keng Goh Jan 2001

The Role Of Kernel Epicuticular Wax In Zea Mays Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Production., You-Keng Goh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The physical and chemical roles of Zea mays (corn) kernel epicuticular wax in conferring resistance to aflatoxin production were examined. There was no evidence of a correlation between the amount of epicuticular wax and aflatoxin production in a kernel development experiment. Aflatoxin levels decreased as kernels developed. Epicuticular wax removal reduced aflatoxin at the earlier stages of development but increased aflatoxin in some genotypes at the later stages, indicating the importance of epicuticular wax during late-stage development and hinting of different defense mechanisms between the early- and late-stage kernels. The amount of epicuticular wax from mature kernels of 23 commercial …

Lipopolysaccharide Receptor, Toll -Like Receptor 4, Mediated Signaling Pathways Leading To Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Murine Macrophages., Sang Hoon Rhee Jan 2001

Lipopolysaccharide Receptor, Toll -Like Receptor 4, Mediated Signaling Pathways Leading To Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression In Murine Macrophages., Sang Hoon Rhee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Genetic evidence indicating that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor in mice was reported. However, biochemical evidence that murine TLR4 confers LPS responsiveness has not been convincingly demonstrated. Inducible cyclooxygenase (COX-2) is selectively expressed in LPS-stimulated macrophages in part mediated through activation of NFkappaB. Thus, we determined whether murine TLR4 confers LPS responsiveness as evaluated by activation of NFkappaB and COX-2 expression. Expression of the constitutively active form (DeltaTlr4) of TLR4 in murine macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7) is sufficient to activate NFkappaB and COX-2 expression and to stimulate prostaglandin E2 synthesis. The truncated form [DeltaTlr4 (P712H)] …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of students at a two-year college about their student loan debt management and the level of indebtedness incurred as a result of utilizing student loans. A survey was conducted in the Spring 2001 semester at Louisiana State University at Eunice in which a systematic random sample was selected. The 37-question survey instrument used in the study included 15 demographic questions and one-open ended question requesting respondents to provide suggestions that could be used to help other students. In addition, 21 perception statements were asked loan recipients. This study found that …

Factors Associated With Research Anxiety Of Human Resource Education Faculty In Higher Education., Chadwick Charles Higgins Jan 2001

Factors Associated With Research Anxiety Of Human Resource Education Faculty In Higher Education., Chadwick Charles Higgins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation examined factors associated with research anxiety of university faculty members. Faculty at research universities have, in the past and at the present, had to deal with pressures associated with roles as researchers, teachers, and service initiators (Miller, 1994). The "publish or perish" atmosphere that accompanies most research university faculty positions often generates questions regarding confidence in one's ability to not only conduct meaningful research, but also to develop a solid and statistically sound research study. The purpose of the study was to determine if certain factors explain possible causes of research anxiety in higher education. These factors included …

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope Jan 2001

Treatment Outcome Of Childhood Obesity: The Effect Of Children's Psychological Distress And Problematic Behavior., Tana Louise Hope

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The number of children and adolescents effected by obesity has been increasing over the past 30 years. Current treatment of childhood obesity focuses primarily on increasing physical activity, modifying diet, providing nutritional education and teaching self-monitoring and stimulus control procedures. Although children have been shown to lose weight by participating in these treatment programs, the amount of weight children lose during treatment is often small, and long-term maintenance of weightloss continues to be challenging for many. Given the relatively weak outcome of childhood obesity treatment programs, research into factors that effect treatment outcome is needed. Psychological distress and problematic behavior …

Investigation Of Amphoteric Materials For Treatment Of Heavy Metals In Storm Water., Dingfang Liu Jan 2001

Investigation Of Amphoteric Materials For Treatment Of Heavy Metals In Storm Water., Dingfang Liu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Urban storm water runoff mobilizes and transports significant loads of heavy metals. Promulgation of NPDES Phase II regulations has spurred development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for in-situ control of heavy metals. In this study, Amphoteric materials such as manganese oxides and iron oxides on the various substrates including silica sands, polymeric beads and cementitious particles were investigated. Surface characterization results indicated that oxide coatings ranged from 20 to 200-mum in depth, and surface areas were significantly increased by greater than a factor of one thousand compared to uncoated media. Point of zero charge (PZC) for manganese oxide coated media …

Biodegradation Of Desorption -Resistant Organic Contaminants In Wetland Soils., Sangjin Lee Jan 2001

Biodegradation Of Desorption -Resistant Organic Contaminants In Wetland Soils., Sangjin Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contaminant bioavailability depends on physicochemical processes such as adsorption/desorption, diffusion, and dissolution. The rates of sorption and desorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,3-Dichlororbenzene (1,3-DCB) were studied. Desorption kinetics of 3-month and 5-month old contaminated soils showed that progressively less amount of contaminant was available for facile desorption compared to freshly contaminated soil in an empirical non-linear model. Microcosm batch studies were conducted to study the biodegradation of 1,3-DCB in the aqueous and soil phase containing a freshly contaminated soil and a soil containing only the desorption resistant fraction. The presence of the soil reduced the rates of biodegradation. It is …

Sexual Profanity And Interpersonal Judgement., Robert Paul O'Neil Jan 2001

Sexual Profanity And Interpersonal Judgement., Robert Paul O'Neil

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the cultural changes noted in American society in the last fifty years has been a noticeable increase in the public use of sexual profanity, particularly by women. Many commentators attribute this change to the sexual revolution of the nineteen-sixties and seventies, as well as the increasing emancipation of women from traditional gender roles. This dissertation examines the ideological foundations that have shaped both western sexual attitudes and the nature of modern use of sexual profanity, to question whether these changes are indicative of greater gender equity. Using a dramaturgical approach to gender identity, an alternative interpretation is presented …

Caught In The Middle: The Construction, Expression, And Transformation Of Identity Among Haitian Youth In Montreal., Earl Floyd Scooter Pegram Jan 2001

Caught In The Middle: The Construction, Expression, And Transformation Of Identity Among Haitian Youth In Montreal., Earl Floyd Scooter Pegram

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines identity issues among Haitian youth in Montreal, Quebec (Canada). Because Haitians are the largest group of "visible minorities" in the province and are an integral part of the Quebec mosaic, the distinctive "sense of belonging" felt by youth in the Haitian community necessitates further inquiry into what connections they (Haitian youth) have with both the majority Quebecois culture and the minority Haitian immigrant culture of Montreal. Since Quebec is a Francophone society in a North America that is majority Anglophone, this linguistic and cultural confusion sometimes results in immigrant youth assuming multiple identities in order to "fit …

I Won't Be Blue Always: Music As *Past In August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come And Gone", "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", "The Piano Lesson" And "Fences"., Yolanda Williams Page Jan 2001

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to prove that playwright August Wilson's earliest works, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, and Fences demonstrate the disabling effect of the slave past and the measures that must be taken to overcome that effect. This study seeks to demonstrate that this past can be made enabling through the acceptance of and reconciliation with it. In addition, it will demonstrate that the vehicle for this recognition is music, which becomes an embodiment of the past. This study consists of eight chapters. Chapter One provides an overview of Wilson's …

Economic Consequences Of Caregiving To The Elderly On Women's Lives., Chizuko Wakabayashi Jan 2001

Economic Consequences Of Caregiving To The Elderly On Women's Lives., Chizuko Wakabayashi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Family caregiving to the elderly comprises a major part of familial obligations in later family life. The family, however, is not a caregiving unit; it is women in the family who directly provide that care. Theories of gender inequality suggest that women's unpaid work reflect women's politically and economically disadvantaged positions both in the family and the labor market. The present dissertation addresses one dimension of this inequality, the economic consequences of elderly care. The objective of this study is to estimate how much unpaid elderly care depresses women's incomes. The economic costs of elderly care include losses in earnings …

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart Jan 2001

Embracing The Void: Nietzsche's "Zarathustra" And The Political., James Daniel Stewart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores Nietzsche's political theory through an analysis of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is demonstrated that the narrative structure of Zarathustra follows from a politically-grounded critique of collective human existence. Nietzsche critiques the state and mass society as inherently repressive. He critiques the concept of the community and friendship as producing ressentiment and bad conscience. One of the central metaphors in Zarathustra proves to be that of nausea, arising from contempt for the mediocre masses of humanity and the realization of the chaotic and contingent nature of existence. Through nausea, the individual necessarily becomes separated from …

Orientations Of Graphs Which Have Small Directed Graph Minors., Glenn Randolph Berman Jan 2001

Orientations Of Graphs Which Have Small Directed Graph Minors., Glenn Randolph Berman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Graphs are characterized by whether or not they have orientations to avoid one or more of the digraphs K&ar;3 , S&ar;3 , and P&ar;3 . K&ar;3 , S&ar;3 and P&ar;3 are created by starting with a triangle, a three point star, or a path of length three respectively, and replacing each edge with a pair of arcs in opposite directions. Conditions are described when all orientations of 3-connected and 4-connected graphs must have one or more of the above digraphs as a minor. It is shown that double wheels, and double wheels without an axle, are the only 4-connected graphs …

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai Jan 2001

The Effect Of Prime Word Processing On The Semantic Priming Effect., Satomi Imai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In three experiments the effect of ease of prime word access on semantic priming was investigated. Ease of prime access was manipulated by prime word frequency, by prime degradation, and by prime repetition. Primes accessed faster (high frequency prime words, repeated primes) should produce larger priming than those accessed more slowly (low frequency prime words, degraded prime words). The time course of priming was also examined by comparing a 150 ms SOA to a 500 ms. The results partially supported the hypothesis. There was a prime word frequency effect on priming in both short and long SOA conditions. High frequency …

Variables Related To Sexual Aggression In Male College Students., Laura Anne Estupinan-Kane

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Using the Pathfinder computer algorithm comparisons were made of participants' knowledge organization of sexual, sexually aggressive, and aggressive concepts. Three hundred and fifty-two heterosexual males (81 admitting a past history and future likelihood of sexual aggressive/coercive behavior; 111 admitting a past history of engaging in sexual aggression; 88 admitting no past history of or future likelihood of engaging in sexual aggression) rated all possible pairwise combinations of 18 words relevant to sex, aggression, sexual aggression, and emotion. Analyses of the dependent variable, number of links, failed to support predicted differences as a function of level of sexual aggression in the …

Wake Rites: The Ancient Irish Rituals Of "Finnegans Wake"., George Cinclair Gibson Jan 2001

Wake Rites: The Ancient Irish Rituals Of "Finnegans Wake"., George Cinclair Gibson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The complex of rites, rituals, and mythic reenactments known in Irish mythology as the Rites of Tara provides an interpretive model for James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Using information and theories pertaining to the Rites of Tara obtained from sources used by James Joyce, a comparison of the Rites of Tara with Finnegans Wake reveals important correlates related to chronology, characters, architectonics, themes, and defining characteristics. The three separate chronological events presented by Wakean scholars as possible dates for the events in the Wake---Easter, an unnamed pagan festival, and the Vernal Equinox---converged on a single day at the Rites of Tara. …
