Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson Jan 1993

Human Responsibility And The Environment: A Christian Perspective, Roger Hutchinson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In his review of the 1932 English translation of Max Weber's famous study, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, United Church of Canada theologian John Line observed that Protestants in particular should pay close attention to Weber's findings. 'For they make it clear that Protestantism had a leading part in determining our present economic structure, a fact which puts in our hands a liability now that the faults of that structure have become apparent.' A few decades later Christians awakened to a similar sense of responsibility for environmental problems. One of the catalysts for this awakening was …

The Prospect For Hindu-Christian Interaction, Margaret Chatterjee Jan 1989

The Prospect For Hindu-Christian Interaction, Margaret Chatterjee

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I take as a starting point the last sentence of the Editorial in Vol. I of the new Bulletin: "With a few notable exceptions...contemporary Hindu thinkers do not seem to be engaged with Christianity in the way their predecessors were at the turn of the century (e.g. Roy, Sen, Dayananda and Radhakrishnan)". This is a very insightful observation and it is worth dwelling on. Let us begin from the "Christian side" first. What considerations are encouraging some Christians to "take an interest" in Hinduism. Listing some of these may be convenient although probably too schematic, for combinations of the following …

The Scope Of Dialogue, Anand Amaladass Jan 1989

The Scope Of Dialogue, Anand Amaladass

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

India has been the land of intense curiosity for others for many centuries and continues to be so. One can trace the history of relationship between India and the outside world as a fruitful study to gain some insight into the Indian attitude towards outsiders. In the first issue of this Bulletin the editor presented a succinct survey of dialogical movements in Indian History. Obviously in a brief essay of this type one cannot expect a comprehensive report covering all the historical events and persons who have contributed to the dialogical movements between the Hindu and the Christian world. In …

Viewpoints: The Ongoing Dialogue, Raimundo Panikkar Jan 1989

Viewpoints: The Ongoing Dialogue, Raimundo Panikkar

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dialogue is more than a flippant or merely well-intentioned conversation. And the Hindu Christian Dialogue, in the present state of affairs, demands both a deep experience of one's own tradition and a sufficient knowledge of the other one. We do not begin anew. This dialogue is not of yesterday. It requires a certain knowledge of what has already happened. The history of this Encounter has a loaded karma.

Viewpoints: Dialogue In The Modern West, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 1988

Viewpoints: Dialogue In The Modern West, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Calgary Conference on Hindu-Christian Dialogue in September 1987, at which the idea of this bulletin was conceived, brought people together who came from places as distant as Hong Kong and Madras, Hamilton and Winnipeg, Kansas City and New York, Tokyo and Santiniketan, Waterloo and Geneva, Edmonton and Regina. Most of the participants had met before somewhere else -- very often in places very far from Calgary. All the Easterners present had lived for extended periods in the west, all the Westerners had been to the East -- some for many years. While the participants of this meeting may not …
