How American Christians Practice Yoga, Allyson Huval
How American Christians Practice Yoga, Allyson Huval
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
RECENTLY, religious studies scholars and Christian practitioners alike have joined in discussions about the effect of Christian yoga on one’s spiritual life. The following article analyzes findings from an online survey based on Christian yoga practitioners' behaviors. The findings affirm that Christians who practice yoga see mystical experiences as a part of their practice but separate this from elements of bhakti yoga. This phenomenon is predicated on practitioners' unfamiliarity with and resistance to engaging with the historical origins of yoga beyond its physical practices, instead shaping their yoga practice to fit their prior faith commitments.
Translation Policy And Practice In The Konkani Catechism Of Diogo Ribeiro, S.J. (1561-1635), Pär Eliasson
Translation Policy And Practice In The Konkani Catechism Of Diogo Ribeiro, S.J. (1561-1635), Pär Eliasson
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
IN virtue of important works in the fields of lexicography, grammar, and translation, Diogo Ribeiro S.J. (1561-1635) is a key figure in Indian missionary linguistics as well as in the development of Christian Konkani. He also plays a pivotal role in the reception history of the more well-known Thomas Stephens. In the preface of his Konkani translation of Roberto Bellarmino’s Dichiarazione più copiosa della dottrina Cristiana , Ribeiro describes his translation policy and argues for controversial choices where he follows the practice of Thomas Stephens. The present article analyzes Ribeiro’s translation policy and shows how he puts it into practice …

The Papal Encyclical Ad Extremas (1893):The Call For An Indigenous Indian Clergy, Its Effects Upon Thecatholic Church In India, And Its Description Of Indian Religions, Andrew Unsworth
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
Ad Extremas, an encyclical epistle issued by Pope Leo XIII, gives a rare insight into the official opinion of the Catholic Church with regard to India’s indigenous religious traditions at the close of the nineteenth century. By means of a historical and textual analysis of the document, this essay offers a critical assessment of its contents facilitating a better appreciation of the ecclesial transition that occurred between the pontificate of Leo XIII and the promulgation of those texts of the Second Vatican Council that made reference to Hinduism.

Response To Sarbeswar Sahoo And Eliza Kent, Nathaniel Roberts
Response To Sarbeswar Sahoo And Eliza Kent, Nathaniel Roberts
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
In this response to Sarbeswar Sahoo, and Eliza Kent, I attempt to address some of the questions, challenges and insights they have put forth in their comments on To Be Cared For. I focus, in particular, on the methodological question of how I define the object of that and what it leaves out, and how I justify my own epistemological stance in relation to those I study, whose views I sometimes challenge. I do so by highlighting a basic distinction between ethnographic studies which take religion itself as an object of investigation, and an anthropological study such as mine, in …
Abhiṣiktānanda: A Reception History1, Enrico Beltramini
Abhiṣiktānanda: A Reception History1, Enrico Beltramini
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
In this article, I present an evaluation of the scholarly reception history of Abhiṣiktānanda. I argue for an identifiable threefold division in Abhiṣiktānanda scholarship: the earliest biographies and appraisals focused on his ‘spiritual search;’ a second wave of scholarship stressed Abhiṣiktānanda’s role as a pioneer in the interreligious dialogue; and, most recently, a third ‘turn’ has emerged in which a generation of scholars are concentrating on ‘internal’ Christian doctrinal critiques of Abhiṣiktānanda’s theology. I also suggest that today’s escapable and perplexing Abhiṣiktānanda is not necessarily the same Abhiṣiktānanda who inspired scholars in the past.
