Family Planning: Extension Aides See Need, Jean Brand Oct 1972

Family Planning: Extension Aides See Need, Jean Brand

Journal of Extension

Program aides working with low-income women in Extension's expanded nutrition program say this clientele is asking for family planning information. Many aides are answering questions about the topic, but often without adequate preparation to deal with it or "official" sanction to do so. They're finding it difficult to ignore or separate these questions from others they receive from these women on homemaking or nutrition topics. Where do you stand in this dilemma? Do these findings suggest that Extension should officially establish an educational program on famliy planning?

One of the means of exending the impact of Extension programs, as envisioned by th Joint USDA/NASULGC Extension Study Committee, is through the use of paid employees who are not considered professionals (referred to as aides, subprofessionals, technicians, program assistants, etc.). As Silverman points out in the Spring, 1969 issue of this journal, adding this group to the organization presents some real challenges and opportunities. One opportunity is in the prospect for improving teaching efforts. Specifically, such personnel are thought to hold considerable promise in working with the disadvantaged. This article uses specific references to the Extension nutrition program for …

Teaching By Television, Eva Medved

The effects of teaching by television have been explored in a number of studies dealing with a variety of subjects. Some of these studies in areas of home economics are cited to demonstrate advantages of the medium. Findings from the author's own study, concerned with teaching nutrition in 5 to 7 minute programs, are summarized to substantiate her contention that the potentialities are great and that home economists are "naturals" for utilizing such a medium. Evidence of the effectiveness of teaching was elicited by testing and interviewing a sample of homemaker-viewers.
