Long-Term Effect Of The Self-Management, Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program On Quality Of Life In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer Treated With High Dose Chemotherapy, Fannie Gaston-Johansson Sep 2012

Long-Term Effect Of The Self-Management, Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program On Quality Of Life In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer Treated With High Dose Chemotherapy, Fannie Gaston-Johansson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Due to treatment advances, women with breast cancer have improved survival rates. Longer survival has created a need for coping interventions to assist stress reduction and long term symptoms and improve quality of life (QOL). Prior coping research has been conducted during treatment with one to two coping strategies rather than a comprehensive coping self-management approach. The purpose of this study was to determine differences between QOL in a Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program (CCSP) treated and control group of breast cancer patients one year after treatment. The significance is that the CCSP is expected to reduce stress and improves …

The Significance Of Spirituality In The Well Elderly, Joseph Molinatti

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the concept of spirituality in the well elderly, their perceived ideas, needs and concerns. Research in this area had been in the neophyte stage as the emphasis had been primarily on the hospitalized elderly. Adding to this body of knowledge would enable faculty to better prepare nurses for the assessmnent and intervention of this need in the healthy elderly, an aggregate of growing numbers in the …

Active Teaching, Active Learning: Are Today's Students Engaged In Learning?, Indra Hershorin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Todays students are different from the past and nursing faculty find themselves struggling to convey enormous amounts of information to students whose horizon of learning has changed. Prensky (2001) claims that students' today are "native speakers" of the digital language. This generation of learners is growing-up in a digital world surrounded by computers, video games, the Internet, smart phones, MP3 players, computer tablets, and e-book readers. According to Jackson and Crawford (2008) to-days learners are cognitively impacted by digital experiences requiring educators to revisit and ultimately expand the horizon of delivery methods. A review of the state of the science …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Worldwide there is growing interest in evidenced-based practice, knowledge to action and implementation science as a whole. In developing countries access to published research is often difficult as some databases are restricted and internet facilities are not widely available. Due to severe work pressure, registered nurses seldom have time to read the latest research, resulting in an overload of new information, lack of access and limited time to keep up-to-date, that lead to late adaptation of the available best practices. Internationally there are several examples that is considered best practice of researchers working with clinical partners (research users) to …

Multiple reports of death or adverse events in children receiving codeine has led to increased calls for discontinuation of use in children. Our Pediatric Oncology Program volunteered to pilot codeine removal. When looking for implementation strategies for this practice change, neither successful implementation nor barriers to change had been reported. Objectives: To evaluate whether prescription of codeine was reduced, assess the attitudes of health professionals at different points during practice change, determine if our educational …

Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak Sep 2012

Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: The prevalence of pituitary tumors (PT) has been estimated from 15 % of all brain tumors. Both physiologic and psychologic functions can be disturbed, affecting the individual's life functions and quality(Qol). PT are classified by size and hormonal productivity: Macroadenomas (MA) > 1cm and microadenomas (mA) < 1cm tumors; those producing excess hormonal secretions as functional adenomas (FA) and those with normal hormonal function as non-functional adenomas (NFA). Hormonal deficiencies can occur in association with all PTs. Patient complaints of cognitive dysfunction and QoL changes have been validated to occur in patients with hormonally active tumors, but not for patients with microadenomas and non-functional tumors.

Purpose: To determine if cognitive deficits are perceived by patients with NFmA when compared to patients with NFMA.

Methods: Cognitive function was evaluated using a modified, disease specific version of the FACT-Cog questionnaire, limited to perception of cognitive capacity. Perceived ability to learn and concentrate, distractibility, mental agility, factual and short term memory and …

Exploring The E-Patient Phenomenon In Nursing, Holli A. Devon, Perry M. Gee, Deborah A. Greenwood, Katherine K. Kim, Susan L. Perez, Nancy Staggers

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The availability of health information on the Internet has changed the knowledge power structure between patients and their health care providers. This new phenomenon of patients well informed by electronic information is known as the e-Patient. e-Patients use information technology to actively participate in their health care rather than passively receive health care, thus assuming higher levels of responsibility for their own health and wellness. Nursing can utilize the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom (DIKW) framework to understand how e-Patients and clinicians may achieve this collective wisdom. The purpose of this review is to examine the e-Patient phenomenon through the …

The Lived Experience Of Compensated Kidney Donors In The Philippines: A Phenomenological Study, Medel Paguirigan

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Despite several advances in HD and PD, an uncomplicated kidney transplant still provides the highest level of quality of life for patients diagnosed with ESRD. The shortage of available kidneys has driven potential recipients to resort to underground organ trade. There is a huge gap in literature about the meaning of sacrificing something important as the lived experience of compensated kidney donors in the Philippines. There are no studies encountered both quantitative and qualitative, using the nursing paradigm that focuses on the lived experiences of compensated especially in the Philippines, where there is a huge market for kidneys.
