The Influence Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Vitamin-D Concentrations In Healthy Individuals, Leroy K. Bolden, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Ricardo Torres, Jeffery Heileson, Meena Meiyyappan, Jeff S. Forsse

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the world due to various factors (e.g., lack of sun exposure, dietary considerations). Currently the utilization of exercise may act as an intervention for VD deficiencies to promote increases in VD concentrations in healthy populations. This could largely be due to the loss of calcium from aerobic exercise (AE), leading to a hormonal response [(e.g., parathyroid hormone (PTH)] and the activation of cytochrome’s (e.g., CYP2R1, CYP27B1) responsible for the regulation of VD. Thus, AE may serve as an intervention to promote VD synthesis due to the impacted biological …

No Effect Of Curcumin Supplementation On Inflammatory Response To Resistance Exercise In Resistance-Trained Young Women, Nicholas Lopez, Patrick Schunk, Lydia K. Caldwell, Sarah Deemer

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

INTRODUCTION: Resistance exercise can often lead to muscle damage and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The discomfort associated with these side effects could affect training frequency and intensity and thus optimal chronic adaptation. Further, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to counteract DOMS may affect muscle adaptation responses. However, curcumin (CUR), a polyphenol found in the spice turmeric, has been shown to attenuate these undesirable effects through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of 8 days (400 mg/d) of a commercially available CUR supplement on muscle soreness and inflammation following fatiguing back squat exercise in resistance-trained …

Effects Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Glycemic Control In A Hyperglycemic Population, Irene John Tomy, Jehu Apaflo, Victoria Rocha, Gabriel Narvaez, Joshua Labadah, Ulices Villalobos, Sudip Bajpeyi

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Hyperglycemia in people with prediabetes and diabetes, if left untreated, can cause serious health conditions and may lead to a diabetic coma. Muscle contraction through conventional exercise is known to increase glucose uptake in cells, thereby decreasing blood glucose levels. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is an innovative approach to contract skeletal muscle involuntarily. Whereas exercise is widely recommended for hyperglycemia management, it is not known whether NMES can be used as an alternative strategy to improve glycemic control. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of NMES for muscle contraction can improve glycemic control …

Social Jetlag Inhibits Exercise-Induced Adaptations In The Heart And Alters Markers Of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Graham R. Mcginnis, Michael B. Dial, Elias M. Malek, Greco Neblina, Austin Cooper, Nikoleta Vasileva, Tanner Erwin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Social jetlag (SJL), or the shifting of behavior and sleep times between weekdays and weekends, is a pervasive form of circadian rhythm disruption that affects nearly 70% of the population to some extent. The magnitude of SJL can be determined by the difference in the mid-sleep phase between weekends and weekdays. Higher levels of SJL have been associated with lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, and increased incidence of cardiometabolic disease, which may be due, in part, to mitochondrial dysfunction. However, no studies to date have evaluated the effects of long term SJL on cardiac mitochondrial dynamics. PURPOSE: To determine …

Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono Nov 2023

Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The acute effects of heat therapy on glycemic markers oppose those of the chronic effects. While the postprandial glucose response is exaggerated during whole body heat exposure, chronic heat exposure lowers HbA1c. Additionally, the acute effects of heat therapy differ depending on the amount of body exposed to heat. Heating a single hand does not increase fasting glucose and lowers postprandial glucose. The opposing effects of partial and whole body heat exposure could be mediated in part from increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity following heat stress. While heating the body increases muscular blood flow and glucose uptake, SNS activation …
