Chronic kidney disease (CKD) will likely progress to renal failure and death without medical or lifestyle intervention. Early detection and treatment of CKD before the development of severe stages (G3b–G5) may provide an opportunity to slow disease progression; however, reliable early detection strategies remain limited. CKD is a systemic condition, and vascular measures have been proposed as potential indicators of renal health. Therefore, this study examined associations between renal function and carotid artery structural characteristics in adults with moderate stages of CKD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between renal filtration markers and carotid …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the foremost cause of death in the United States and worldwide; thus, understanding novel interventions (e.g., diet) to reduce CVD risk is of critical importance. Ambulatory BP monitoring allows assessment of cardiovascular responses under real-world conditions and may be superior to in-office BP in terms of CVD risk prediction. PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of an acute dietary capsaicin intervention on 24-hour peripheral BP and pulse pressure (PP), with attention to sex-specific responses, given prior evidence of sex differences in vascular function. METHODS: In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design, 70 healthy adults (36 females, 34 …

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and affects men and women differently, highlighting the importance of understanding vascular regulation across both sexes. Regular consumption of dietary capsaicin (found in spicy peppers) has been associated with reduced CVD risk, potentially through improvements in vascular function. However, the mechanisms by which dietary capsaicin influences vascular health are not well understood. Passive limb movement-induced hyperemia (PLM) is a non-invasive technique used to assess vascular health. During PLM, a limb (typically the leg) is moved passively—without muscle contraction—by an external force, such as a researcher or mechanical …

Vascular stiffness is highly correlated to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and has been attenuated by regular aerobic exercise in older adults. Additionally, body composition strongly predicts vascular stiffness and CVD risk. Previous research has documented that bilateral differences in shear stress lead to differences in vascular endothelial function in tennis players. However, whether this translates into bilateral differences in vascular stiffness and blood pressure remains to be elucidated. The SphygmoCor is a gold standard for assessing arterial stiffness but is not readily accessible. In comparison, the TicWatch GTH Pro, which uses the SphygmoCor algorithm to provide a cardiovascular health (CVH) score …

Modeling The Oxidative Metabolic Breakdown Of Ethanol And Its Effects On The Cardiovascular System, Jessica F. Farfan, Allan Knox, Grady Hanrahan
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic ethanol consumption contributes to the global prevalence’s of cardiovascular disease by mechanisms involving an inflammatory response and consequent lipid peroxidation. Cytochrome p450 is a part of the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS) and can utilize iron complexes and the reductant NADPH to catalyze the breakdown of acute/chronic ethanol consumption. However, efficacy of MEOS to prevent cardiovascular burden induced by ethanol consumption is not clear. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the response of the cardiovascular system in response to the oxidative metabolic breakdown of ethanol via MEOS. METHODS: An extensive literature search provided data to develop a mechanistic model of the metabolism …

Maximum Aerobic Exercise Induces Common Carotid Vasoconstriction And Increased Vascular Resistance, Michael Diaz, Zaria Opara, Heysel Morales, Allan Knox
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise has been reported to elicit changes in systemic hemodynamics. Recent evidence suggests that the cerebral circulation reacts independently to systemic circulations to the same physiological stimuli. The aim of this is to determine the influence of high-intensity aerobic exercise on common carotid artery (CCA) hemodynamics. METHODS: Hemodynamic measurements were recorded before and following the cessation of a maximum oxygen uptake test (VO2max). One minute video of the CCA by Doppler ultrasound were recorded and used to determine peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), time averaged mean blood velocity (TAMEAN), timed …

Differential Cardiovascular Responses To Acute Exercise In Adults With Cerebral Palsy, Gustavo Aldama, Allison Bui, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive and permanent neurological disorder leading to musculoskeletal dysfunction and immobility. A major clinical problem with CP is early development of cardiovascular diseases with increased rates of mortality. Due to the inevitability of motor dysfunction adults with CP can develop health risk factors, such as obesity and hypertension, at a higher rate compared to the general population. To date, the physiological basis for CP has not been established; how cardiovascular dynamics, such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and blood flow (BF), are controlled in individuals with CP has never been identified. PURPOSE: To …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) individuals presented declining sensitivity to insulin (p=.0201) as calculated by insulin sensitivity index (ISI-60) measurement. The young women categorized as MetSyn were previously found to have significantly lower (ISI-60) from healthy controls (Gomez, 2018), and had higher percent body fat (p< .05), diminished HDL (p< .05), and higher expenditure of Kcals (p=.04) compared to controls as measured by 7 day accelerometer. Cardiovascular modification is hypothesized to involve progressive dysfunction of the insulin mediated AKT/PKB eNOS pathway. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify if daily sedentary activity is associated with myocardial workload in the development of the metabolic disorder. We hypothesized metabolic syndrome individuals Rate Pressure Product (RPP) would be at elevated at rest and through various workloads of small muscle exercise. METHODS: We compared daily activity to heart …
