Interaction Of Symbiont Alkaloid Accumulation And Growth, L P. Bush, M A. Do Valle Ribeiro, J Hogan, P B. Burruss Ii

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Several classes of alkaloids are present in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and the tall fescue-endophyte (Neotyphodium [=Acremonium] coenophialum [Morgan-Jones and Gams] Glenn, Bacon and Hanlin comb.nov.) association. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of the endophyte on seed germination and seedling growth and to measure the effect of host perloline concentration on endophyte development and loline accumulation. Seed germination was not altered by the presence of the endophyte. In non-stress field conditions of Ireland emergence of first leaf occurred sooner and dry weight was greater in endophyte infected seedlings than endophyte free seedlings, whereas no significant differences …

Brachiaria Brizantha Response To Phosphorus Rates In The Nutrient Solution, F A. Monteiro, R A. Martim, W T. Mattos

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Seven phosphorus rates in the nutrient solution were studied in a greenhouse experiment for Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst) Stapf. Plants had 54 days of growth and 49 days of regrowth. Significant responses in forage yield, tiller number and root dry weight were found. Plant tops were divided into four parts and phosphorus concentration in each one significantly changed with phosphorus rates. Sampling of the young leaf blades and analyzing for phosphorus is proposed for diagnostic purposes. A critical phosphorus concentration of 1.2 g kg-1 is suggested as the critical level in the young leaf blades.

Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). Acid saturations of up to 20% had little impact on the yield of annual ryegrass, while yield …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. The nitrogen dilution curves and the critical N concentration in the forage were determined. The …

Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale Jun 2024

Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A glasshouse experiment was carried out to determine how increasing rates of P supply (0, 33, 100 and 300 kg P ha-1) influenced the water use efficiency of white clover grown in a P-deficient soil under dry conditions. Increasing the P supply enhanced both shoot dry matter yield and water use by the clover plants. The relatively greater dry matter response meant that water use efficiency also increased with added P. High rates of water extraction by these high-P clover plants resulted in a marked drying of soil. Despite these dry soil conditions there was no adverse effect on growth …

Changes In Soil Microbial Biomass-N Under Ryegrass/White Clover Grazed Pastures Based On Symbiotic N Fixation And Fertilizer N, R Ruz, H Troncoso, L Longeri, E Jahn, I Vidal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Soil microbial biomass nitrogen (BN ) was periodically measured in two pastures a) grazed pastures without N fertilizer and b) grazed pastures receiving 200 kg of fertilizer N per year, respectively, during July 1993 to July 1994. Soil type was a volcanic soil Medial, thermic, Typic Distrandept. BN was highly variable and the two type of pastures showed a similar pattern of distribution, with statistical differences in only three sampling. Values of BN were lower than that found in other studies of temperate regions, but also the BN was significantly higher than the available pool of mineral N, indicating the …

The Effect Of Fertiliser History On Nutrient Accumulation And Plant-Available Nutrient Supply In Legume-Based Pasture Soils, J L. Moir, M J. Hedley, A D. Mackay, R W. Tillman Jun 2024

The Effect Of Fertiliser History On Nutrient Accumulation And Plant-Available Nutrient Supply In Legume-Based Pasture Soils, J L. Moir, M J. Hedley, A D. Mackay, R W. Tillman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal production in New Zealand is dependent on pastoral legumes to build soil nitrogen fertility, which otherwise limits the growth of the major sward component, grass. Traditionally, in order to sustain legume vigour, single superphosphate has been applied to elevate soil phosphorus and sulphur levels. Rarely have either the agronomic or nutrient efficiencies of these systems been assessed. Fourteen hill country pasture sites in three broad rainfall regimes were chosen to assess the effect of contrasting fertiliser histories on soil fertility, in particular nitrogen availability. At each site soil fertility indices and pasture production for the 1993/94 growing season were …

Long Term Effects Of Liming A Basalt-Derived Soil, On Lucerene And Phalaris Production, K.M. F. Reed, J F. Chin

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lime incorporated into a basalt-derived clay loam lowered exchangeable aluminium in soil. Soil pH was still elevated, 9 years after 2 t/ha of lime was incorporated. With lower rates of lime the density of lucerne plants declined. Lucerne yield more than doubled with lime. After six years, the area was sown to a phalaris-clover pasture. A 15% increase in the yield of phalaris was recorded from limed plots over the next three years. Despite this, 11 years after liming, herbage P concentrations increased with lime, from 0.28% to 0.35%.

Phosphorus Availability, Defoliation Tolerance, And Genetic Differentiation In White Clover, D F. Chapman Jun 2024

Phosphorus Availability, Defoliation Tolerance, And Genetic Differentiation In White Clover, D F. Chapman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The genetic composition of mixed populations of white clover growing in low fertility, grass-dominant hill pastures was estimated four and eight years after populations were established. Populations were based on an adapted ('Grasslands Tahora') or poorly adapted ('Grasslands Huia') cultivar, and received either no fertiliser, or 35kg P /ha /year. The P response curve of surviving plants was also determined, and compared with plants grown from 'standard' seedlines of the respective cultivars. Between years 4 and 8, the proportion of the populations constituted by plants true-to-type for the sown cultivar remained steady at 56 - 58% for Tahora, but fell …

Potassium Rates For Macrotyloma Axillare Growth, R A. Martim, F A. Monteiro, P.R. L. Portilho

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The response of the tropical forage legume macrotiloma guata (Macrotyloma axillare (E. Mey) Verdc) to potassium rates was studied in a greenhouse experiment. The plants were grown in nutrient solution with seven potassium (K) rates, 0; 3.5; 7; 21; 35; 105 and 245 mg l-1 of solution, in randomized complete block design, with four replications. There was significant response of the legume to potassium rates. Considerations are made on the influence of these levels on plant dry matter yield in two harvests, root dry matter production and potassium and magnesium concentrations in the plant tissue.

Effects Of Agropastoral Systems On Microbially Bound Phosphorus In Low P Acid Soils, A Oberson, D K. Friesen, C Morel, H Tiessen, E Frossard Jun 2024

Effects Of Agropastoral Systems On Microbially Bound Phosphorus In Low P Acid Soils, A Oberson, D K. Friesen, C Morel, H Tiessen, E Frossard

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The effect of agropastoral systems replacing native savanna on microbially bound phosphorus (Pmic) in low P acid soils was investigated. Chloroform released P (PChl) was measured to estimate Pmic. In a long-term improved pasture experiment, PChl was higher in grass-legume (GL) than grass-only pasture (GO). Although the P balance was slightly higher in GO than in GL, available P contents followed the same trend as PChl suggesting that the presence of legumes enhances the maintenance of P fertility. In a rice-pasture system, PChl was higher than under rice monocrop indicating an effect of the cropping system on PChl that goes …

Effect Of Slurry Application On Cell Wall Components And Silage Intake By Sheep Of Italian Ryegrass And Triticale, H Kawamoto, N Shimizu, R Uegaki, R Kobayashi Jun 2024

Effect Of Slurry Application On Cell Wall Components And Silage Intake By Sheep Of Italian Ryegrass And Triticale, H Kawamoto, N Shimizu, R Uegaki, R Kobayashi

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The study was to elucidate the effect of application of slurry manure from dairy cows on chemical components, the rumen degradation characteristics and silage intake by sheep of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and Triticale ( rye-wheat hybrid). The amounts of application of slurry were 0, 50, 100 and 150 t/ha. The increasing level of slurry application resulted in a decrease of lower digestible cell wall and an increase of degradation rate. The silage of 150 t /ha treatment was significantly more consumed by sheep than the other treatments (p<0.05). The changes in cell wall components in both quantity and quality by the slurry application were advantageous to the increase of voluntary dry matter intake of the forage.

Long-Term Effects Of Co2 Enrichment And Temperate Increase On Forage Quality In A Temperate Grass, J F. Soussana, J M. Besle, I Chabaux, P Loiseau, P C. De Faccio Carvalho

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Perennial ryegrass swards were grown during two years at two N fertilizer supplies in elevated (700 ppm) or ambient atmospheric CO2 concentration at outdoor temperature and at + 3°C in elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 and temperature increase had only minor impacts on the digestibility and on the fiber composition of the cut material. On average, the water soluble carbohydrate concentration of the leaf laminae was doubled in elevated CO2, whereas a 3°C temperature increase reduced this concentration by 25 %.

Growth Response Of Australian Temperate Pasture Species To Co2 Enrichment, T P. Bolger, J M. Lilley, R M. Gifford, J R. Donnelly

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Growth responses to a doubling of the atmospheric CO2 concentration for 15 species represented in temperate pastures of southern Australia were investigated in a glasshouse experiment. The final dry weight increase due to CO2 enrichment averaged 34% across species but varied widely. The variation in CO2 response was greater among species within botanical groups than it was among groups. The CO2 response of a number of ‘desirable’, but also a number of ‘undesirable’ species was greater than the mean response, suggesting that these species may increase their proportion in pastures as atmospheric CO2 rises. Our results do not support the …
