The Design Of Xml-Based Model And Experiment Description Languages For Network Simulation, Andy Hallagan Jan 2011

The Design Of Xml-Based Model And Experiment Description Languages For Network Simulation, Andy Hallagan

Honors Theses

The Simulation Automation Framework for Experiments (SAFE) is a project created to raise the level of abstraction in network simulation tools and thereby address issues that undermine credibility. SAFE incorporates best practices in network simulationto automate the experimental process and to guide users in the development of sound scientific studies using the popular ns-3 network simulator. My contributions to the SAFE project: the design of two XML-based languages called NEDL (ns-3 Experiment Description Language) and NSTL (ns-3 Script Templating Language), which facilitate the description of experiments and network simulationmodels, respectively. The languages provide a foundation for the construction of better …

A Framework For The Automation Of Discrete-Event Simulation Experiments, Bryan Ward Jan 2011

A Framework For The Automation Of Discrete-Event Simulation Experiments, Bryan Ward

Honors Theses

Simulation is an important resource for researchers in diverse fields. However, many researchers have found flaws in the methodology of published simulation studies and have described the state of the simulation community as being in a crisis of credibility. This work describes the project of the Simulation Automation Framework for Experiments (SAFE), which addresses the issues that undermine credibility by automating the workflow in the execution of simulation studies. Automation reduces the number of opportunities for users to introduce error in the scientific process thereby improvingthe credibility of the final results. Automation also eases the job of simulation users and …

The Role Of Broad In Determining Neuronal Composition In The Drosophila Brain, Alper Dincer Jan 2011

The Role Of Broad In Determining Neuronal Composition In The Drosophila Brain, Alper Dincer

Honors Theses

To elucidate the individual roles of the four Broad-Complex (BR-C) isoforms, Z1-Z4, on neuronal composition in the mushroom body, I undertook a series of overexpression experiments and created tools for knockdown experiments. Specifically, I imaged and analyzed Drosophila brains from earlier experiments in which BR-C isoforms Z1 and Z3 were individually overexpressed in the MB. The knockdown experiments required the creation of the molecular tools necessary for isoform-specific RNA interference (RNAi). For these I performed PCR to amplify DNA sequences unique to each isoform and inserted those into the pWIZ vector, which will permit expression of loopless hairpin double stranded …

Microbial Community Analysis Of Lake Chillisquaque, A Small Water System In Central Pennsylvania, Allison Mayhew Jan 2011

Microbial Community Analysis Of Lake Chillisquaque, A Small Water System In Central Pennsylvania, Allison Mayhew

Honors Theses

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic organisms that require the absorption of light for the completion of photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria can use a variety of wavelengths of light within thevisible light spectrum in order to harvest energy for this process. Many species of cyanobacteria have light-harvesting proteins that specialize in the absorption of a small range of wavelengths oflight along the visual light spectrum; others can undergo complementary chromatic adaptation and alter these light-harvesting proteins in order to absorb the wavelengths of light that are mostavailable in a given environment. This variation in light-harvesting phenotype across cyanobacteria leads to the utilization of environmental niches …

Detecting Improvised Explosive Devices Via Forward Looking Ground Penetrating Radar, Will Woods Jan 2011

Detecting Improvised Explosive Devices Via Forward Looking Ground Penetrating Radar, Will Woods

Honors Theses

Forward-looking ground penetrating radar shows promise for detection of improvised explosive devices in active war zones. Because of certain insurmountable physical limitations, post-processing algorithm development is the most popular research topic in this field. One such investigative avenue explores the worthiness of frequency analysis during data post-processing. Using the finite difference time domain numerical method, simulations are run to test both mine and clutter frequency response. Mines are found to respond strongest at low frequencies and cause periodic changes in ground penetrating radar frequency results. These results are called into question, however, when clutter, a phenomenon generally known to be …

Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy Jan 2011

Unethical Decision Making : Understanding The Role Of Leadership And Gender, Laura A. Poatsy

Honors Theses

This study examined the effects leadership role and gender have on unethical decision making and the engagement in unethical behaviors. 64 undergraduate students were exposed to both hypothetical and behavioral measures that tested their willingness to engage in unethical behaviors. The results indicate a significant effect of leadership role on unethical decision making. Furthermore, goal importance and self-efficacy are driving factors in leaders' propensity to engage in unethical behaviors. These findings demonstrate the different circumstances that drive individuals who associate with different gender-roles and are placed in various leadership-roles to act in unethical ways.

Rosie The Riveter Vs. Helen The Homemaker : Advertising And The Role Of Women In America After World War Ii, Christina Pfaff

Honors Theses

At the outbreak of World War II millions of servicemen left the United States to fight overseas, creating a great demand for workers in the production industries. Although the government identified women as the ideal source to fill the labor gap, a harsh stigma against the female worker existed from the Depression era. The United States government launched a recruitment campaign in collaboration with major advertising agencies and well-known artists in an effort to overcome this stigma and persuade women to join the industrial workforce. This recruitment campaign centered on the image of "Rosie the Riveter." This paper discusses the …

Presidential Leadership In Health Care Reform, Ashley G. Miles Jan 2011

Presidential Leadership In Health Care Reform, Ashley G. Miles

Honors Theses

Through conducting this research, I observed that while many leadership scholars cite persuasion, imaginary communities, follower engagement, serving as a symbol, and responding to the public's distrust of authority as effective means to meet the end of effective leadership, all of these tools were methods of influencing public opinion toward a specific end, rather than educating the public about all sides of an issue. Americans' anxieties regarding security, liberty, and choice, while complex, have roots in the public lacking a clear understanding about what impacts public policy will have on their private lives. Looking back on Clinton's and Obama's reform …

New Catalysts For The Photocatalytic Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide To C1 Organic Compounds, Anna Hailey Jan 2011

New Catalysts For The Photocatalytic Reduction Of Carbon Dioxide To C1 Organic Compounds, Anna Hailey

Honors Theses

Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) has recently been identified as one of the five notable research areas in catalysis because it simultaneously reduces carbon emissions while storing clean, green solar energy in organic compounds. The development of efficient photocatalysts that take advantage of solar radiation is therefore an important area of research. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a commonly-used photocatalyst for this reaction, but it requires ultraviolet (UV) radiation to excite its electrons. Carbon-doping (C-doping) has been shown to reduce the intensity of energy required, thus allowing the photocatalyst to take advantage of the visible light spectrum. Copper (Cu), added …

An Exploration Of Process Observation And Practical Application In Devised Theatre, Anna Elizabeth Donnell Jan 2011

An Exploration Of Process Observation And Practical Application In Devised Theatre, Anna Elizabeth Donnell

Honors Theses

In my research, I encountered a particular methodology of creating plays known as devised or collaborative theatre. In this form, the ensemble collaboratively contributes to all aspects of the production, including the processes of writing. production, direction and performance. Therefore, working with such a method would provide the most desirable test culture for me to examine the development of a play from initial inspiration to eventual materialization. In this way, I theorized that I would gain a better understanding of the creative roots of theatrical expression as well as of the mechanisms of devised theatre as a means to that …

Crank Dat Soulja Boy: Understanding Black Male Hip Hop Aspiration In Rural Mississippi, Bruce O'Brian Foster

Honors Theses

Aspirations and attainment are affected by a number of factors, including socioeconomic status, neighborhood setting, family influence, and peer socialization. While previous scholarship has focused on these factors, separately and collectively, this research will examine an understudied but prevalent dynamic; Hip-Hop aspirations. Specifically, this research focuses on the relationship between aspirations to r^ and the space/place dynamics of the rural South. Drawing on qualitative data collected in rural. Southern communities through ethnographic research methods, this research explores how Black male aspirations may manifest themselves in ways that have come to be perceived as alternative and oppositional.

Representing Generalized Boolean Algebras In Riesz Spaces, Reed Condon Gilbow Jan 2011

Representing Generalized Boolean Algebras In Riesz Spaces, Reed Condon Gilbow

Honors Theses

Proof. Suppose (x^) is an increasing sequence with G B for all n G A/” which has a supremum x G B. Since A preserves order, A(x„) is increasing and A(x„) < A(x) for all n G Af. By virtue of the fact that J is cr-complete and A(x„) is bounded above, the sequence A(x,i) has a supremum K(y) for some y G: B. Claim: A(x) ^ A(^). Assume that A(x) ^ A(y). Since A(y) is the supremum of A(x„), K[y) < A(x). It also follows that x ^ y because A is injective. We claim that y is an upper bound for (xn)- If not then there exists an A G AA such that x^ Ay ^ xj^. By the injectivity of A, it follows that 29 \{xy A y) = A(xiv) A A(y) A(xjv). It follows that A(y) is not an upper bound for all A(x„) which is a contradiction of our assumption that A(y) is the supremum of A(x„). Thus y is an upper bound for (xn). It follows that x < y as x is the supremum of (xn). However, the latter implies A(x) < A(y) which contradicts our assumption that A(y) < A(x). Therefore A(x) = A(y).

And Justice For All: Non-Native English Speakers In The American Legal System, Leah Michelle Nodar

Honors Theses

One of the most important rights enshrined in the American Constitution is the right to due process of law. However, the execution of this right has been sporadic, and some groups have been consistently disadvantaged. Speakers of English as a second language make up one such group, especially limited English proficiency (LEP) speakers. LEP speakers' access to due process took a step forward with the 1978 Court Interpreters Act, which guaranteed interpreters for anyone who ‘‘speaks only or primarily a language other than the English language." However, decisions as to who speaks “primarily” a foreign language and who speaks English …

Effects Of Anticholinergics And Cholinergic Enhancers On Spatial Learning And Locomotion In Mice, Brittany Nicole Simpson

Honors Theses

To investigate the cholinergic system’s role In learning and memory, I. utilized the Morris water maze (MWM) task, which tests spatial ability. Subjects must locate a submerged, hidden platform using the various distal cues around the room to orient themselves in space to find the escape platform. The cholinergic system regulates spatial learning and memory necessary for tasks such as the MWM and also plays a role in locomotor activity. I performed a pilot study to demonstrate that outbred strains of mice perform the MWM task effectively. I then used an outbred strain of mice, Swiss Webster, in the MWM …

Public pension programs around the world face an uncertain future. Many countries of the post-industrial world are witnessing a significant demographic shift: the aging of their respective populations. France has not escaped this demographic dilemma and the concomitant strain on its public pension system. Despite the popularity of the French welfare state, the aging of the baby boom generation, dubbed the “papy boom” in France, is shaking the foundations on which the system was established. This thesis argues that a balanced pension system is a more equitable system. This thesis presents an economic model that measures the impact of variables …

Shakespeare's Soundscape: Vocal Song In The Plays Of William Shakespeare And In Early Modern Culture., Julie Marcia Dhossche Jan 2011

Shakespeare's Soundscape: Vocal Song In The Plays Of William Shakespeare And In Early Modern Culture., Julie Marcia Dhossche

Honors Theses

In evaluating song in early modem times we see the traveling of music through the culture, an omnipresent current that flow's through social strata and situations and can be interpreted to connect all. However, while music was pervasive in early modem society and the dominant theory of music w'as a totalizing one outlining a harmony inherent of and inspired by music, music in fact had a variety of uses among interests groups and could be a main indicator of social division. In this thesis I analyze song in Shakespeare within the frame of this seemingly paradoxical phenomenon of music as …
