How Does Color In Package Design Lead To Emotional Appeal And Consumer Behavior?, Andrea Floyd May 2011

How Does Color In Package Design Lead To Emotional Appeal And Consumer Behavior?, Andrea Floyd

Honors Theses

Consumer behavior can be broken down into specific components including different behaviors, such as attention, motivation, and persuasion, which can all lead the consumer to purchase. Within the literature, there is a common order that consumer behavior tends to follow, and all consumers go through a series of steps in their decision process before making a purchase. Scholars claim that attention leads to motivation, which leads to purchase. Many scholars also recognize emotional appeal and emotional value and their large influence on consumer behavior. Attention, motivation, and purchase can all be provoked using emotional appeal. Scholars suggest that emotional appeal …

Mitochondrial Dna Inheritance In Bivalves: A Comparative Study Involving The Unique System Of Doubly Uniparental Inheritance, Sarah Heishman May 2011

Mitochondrial Dna Inheritance In Bivalves: A Comparative Study Involving The Unique System Of Doubly Uniparental Inheritance, Sarah Heishman

Honors Theses

A comparative study of Doubly Uniparental Inheritance (DUI) in the bivalve mollusks Mytilus edulis and Geukensia demissa has yielded unanticipated results. Around the world, it has been reported that members of the taxonomic family Mytilidae (along with the families of Unionidae and Veneridae) consistently exhibit DUI. However, the hard-to-place Geukensia demissa, which is a member of this family, has had varying reports of its DUI status. Most reports involving G. demissa vary with the location in which it is being studied, which prompts more questions than it answers. Due to many months of unsuccessful DNA purification attempts, sequencing and an …

Recovery Of The Long-Spine Sea Urchin, Diadema Antillarum, In Discovery Bay, Jamaica, 27 Years After Its Mass Mortality, Jessica Keller May 2011

Recovery Of The Long-Spine Sea Urchin, Diadema Antillarum, In Discovery Bay, Jamaica, 27 Years After Its Mass Mortality, Jessica Keller

Honors Theses

The long-spined sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, is a well-studied keystone herbivore on Caribbean coral reefs. The sea urchin controls benthic algae populations by grazing on macroalgae. Destruction caused by Hurricane Allen in 1980, along with the mass mortality of this urchin in 1983, greatly impacted Caribbean reef systems. In Discovery Bay, Jamaica, Diadema densities have been heavily studied over the years, allowing a review of their recovery and a prediction of their future. In Discovery Bay, densities were recorded to be up to 9.3 and 13.9 ± 2.8 m-2 at 5 m depth on the forereef before the mass mortality. …

The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann May 2011

The Effectiveness Of Random Drug Testing Of School Athletes, Kelly Cann

Honors Theses

Proponents of drug testing would most likely argue that random drug testing could have saved the lives of Len Bias and Taylor Hooton. Those against random drug testing might respond that this testing could be an avenue used to save lives, but before that can happen, a lot more work would need to be done to change the way the current system operates (or fails to operate) in order to make drug testing fair, effective and efficient.

Problem Solving And Functional Fixedness: A Comparison Between Eco-Reps And Non Eco-Reps, Keith G. Richard May 2011

Problem Solving And Functional Fixedness: A Comparison Between Eco-Reps And Non Eco-Reps, Keith G. Richard

Honors Theses

A quasi experiment was conducted to examine functional fixedness and creative problem solving. The purpose of this research was to attempt to identify differences in cognitive ability between recyclers and non recyclers. This researcher investigated whether recycling group affiliation or priming for functional fixedness would affect task performance among college students. A tower building activity was developed for this study to determine if members of a college recycling group, the Eco-Reps, would complete a problem solving activity faster than non Eco-Reps. Some participants in each group were primed for functional fixedness. This researcher hypothesized that Eco-Reps would complete the task …

This approach has positive and negative attributes, and other solutions are also discussed.

A Review Of Literature For Osteology: Cell Biology, Tissue Biology, And The Application Of Synthetic Compounds For The Facilitation Of Bone Tissue Repair, Ryan T. Jones May 2011

A Review Of Literature For Osteology: Cell Biology, Tissue Biology, And The Application Of Synthetic Compounds For The Facilitation Of Bone Tissue Repair, Ryan T. Jones

Honors Theses

Bone is a dynamic matter that provides support, structure, mineral reserves, and stem cell reserves for the body. Important functions range from structural support for the body to roles in maintaining homeostasis. Structure and support for the body is the most obvious role, with the skeletal system as a whole providing a normal force for other tissues and organs to resist gravity. Protection is also inferred for tissues and organs from impacting forces, especially with axial bones covering vital organs in the thoracic cavity. Another function of bone includes the ability to store and release minerals when needed to maintain …

Row Reduction Of Macaulay Matrices, Lorrin Debenport May 2011

Row Reduction Of Macaulay Matrices, Lorrin Debenport

Honors Theses

A computer can use a matrix to represent a system of non-linear multivariate polynomial equations. The fastest known ways to transform this system into a form with desirable computational properties rely on transforming its matrix into upper-triangular form [8, 9]. The matrix for such a system will have mostly zero entries, which we call sparse [7]. We propose to analyze several methods of performing row-reduction, the process by which matrices are reduced into upper-triangular form [2].

What is special about row-reducing matrices in this context? When row-reducing a matrix, swapping rows or columns is typically acceptable. However, if the order …

Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley May 2011

Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley

Honors Theses

The main operating concern of all species in any ecosystem or natural environment is rooted in the battle for survival.  This constant battle for survival is most highlighted in the two main modes of species interaction; categorized as predation or competition.  This research focused on applying biological mathematics to analyzing predation relationships, especially the relationship between the Canadian Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare.  This predation relationship is quite special, because these species interact in a relatively isolated manner compared to others, meaning their populations fluctuated in a regular cycle.  These population fluctuations can be defined and analyzed mathematically using systems …

Language And Legend In The Fantasy Fiction Of J.R.R. Tolkien, Melissa K. Cornwell

Honors Theses

J.R.R. Tolkien’s series, The Lord of the Rings, had a great impact on the literary world. Tolkien himself made quite an impact on English society as a philologist and teacher, and he wrote his novels because of his passion for language and mythology. The Lord of the Rings series included the books The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, and he wrote The Silmarillion after completing the series as a sort of prequel to the events in the other books. Tolkien’s life was profoundly affected by language and literature, …

Effects Of Nicotine And Emotional Priming On Ability To Inhibit Eye-Gaze Toward Emotional Stimuli In An Antisaccade Task In Nonsmokers, Nathaniel J. Wachter May 2011

Effects Of Nicotine And Emotional Priming On Ability To Inhibit Eye-Gaze Toward Emotional Stimuli In An Antisaccade Task In Nonsmokers, Nathaniel J. Wachter

Honors Theses

Saccadic eye movement tasks like the antisaccade task (AST) have been used to assess impulsivity and response inhibition in a variety of populations, including tobacco-abstinent smokers.  Previous studies using ASTs have shown nicotine to reduce reaction times (RTs) possibly reinforcing the habit of smoking. Research also shows nicotine to reduce attention to and distraction by emotionally negative stimuli, which may account for some of the ability of nicotine to reduce negative affect.  The present study was the first to assess the interactive effects of nicotine, emotional priming and emotional target stimuli on AST performance in nonsmokers.  Ten male and 14 …

Is Justice Available To All? Indigent Defense In Michigan, Barbara K. Lanning

Honors Theses

Does Michigan’s public defense system operate in accordance with the decisions made by the Supreme Court in cases like Gideon v. Wainwright, Powell v. Alabama, and Argersinger v. Hamlin? If not, how can we reform the system? The right to counsel for those accused of a crime in the United States is a constitutional right. After the decision issued in Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) the federal government mandated that all states were responsible for providing representation for indigent defendants. The states provide these services either through public defender programs, appointment of court cases to private attorneys, or through contracts with …

The Supreme Court: A Decade Of Opinion, Matthew A. Bahleda Apr 2011

The Supreme Court: A Decade Of Opinion, Matthew A. Bahleda

Honors Theses

Conventional wisdom would have us believe that the Bush v. Gore (2000) decision marked a large change in public approval of the Supreme Court. To analyze this claim, a series of landmark cases for the years 2000-2010 will be reduced to a data set that will allow for the observation of specific variables and the roles each variable may play in determining the change in public opinion. From there, conclusions are made that substantively explicate the relations between the indicated relevant variables and the change in opinion. Ultimately, the Bush v. Gore decision is found to have not had the …

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes Apr 2011

The Experience Of Guatemalans In Chattanooga, Tn, Heather Scholes

Honors Theses

Starting in the 1980s, Latin American immigration in the United States began undergoing a series of significant adaptations in response to changing government policies and economic relocation trends. A widespread shift toward permanent settlement alongside significant economic restructuring and growth in the Southeast opened the door for many low-skill workers in nontraditional settlement areas, especially in the Southeast. Chattanooga, Tennessee, has participated in this process and demonstrates certain peculiarities, particularly in regards to its large number of Guatemalan immigrants. Characterized by a unique culture, history, and family of languages, these Guatemalans' powerful stories remain untold largely due to language barriers …
